I absolutely hate their turn-around times for games. Almost all the games of late have taken over a year to deliver. Some took so long to deliver that I actually forgot I bought the thing. It showed up on my doorstep and I was like "wth is this?". That and their games used to be worth a lot more on the resale. I remember in the early days, you were almost guaranteed to double your money selling an unopened lrg on eBay. Now, even if you have a collector's edition, it doesn't sell for more than $35-40 higher than you originally paid. Then you have to tack on the ebay fees etc. It's not worth it anymore. I straight up stopped ordering games from them unless it was something I just really wanted in my collection. And even that is wearing thin, due to those INSANE turn-around times. Plus B.S stuff like their River City Girls 2 pre-order. I'll be damned if I was going to order that and wait 9-10mo when PlayAsia is selling a version (full english) of RCG 1+2 on the same switch cart!! Full physical! It's not even exclusive to lrg. I don't care about scarcity or rarity of games. I get excited about playing the sorts of games I love. I don't care about giant collector's editions that I haven't the space or use for. I am a kid of the 8- and 16-bit eras when getting that physical game felt substantial. The idea or the draw of Limited Run Games for me initially was receiving a substantial physical game that had only previously been digital, or a game such as an arcade-only title which had never seen a home release. If only it were that simple today. I am always delighted with what I receive when I order from LRG, but the wait period is pretty crazy. I just received Natsuki Chronicles from First Press Games after more than a freaking year, so this is also an overall limited game company issue. It's all about money now and there isn't a darn thing funny about it. I just hope that checking off that list of digital only and arcade-only titles begging for physical release becomes the priority again.
@countfulch2 жыл бұрын
I think the "high quality" games have been few and far between since they started. You are correct about the collector's editions. Very few games need a collector's edition. The reason limited run sells them is that there are tons of idiots out there who will throw down 100-200 bucks every week and think they will be bankrolling their retirement by selling them off down the road. This brings me to another issue, Limited Run basically created the modern "sealed game collector". Imagine plunking down the money in order to wait 8 months to over a year only to take the game and put it on your shelf. The sad thing about Bill & Ted is that it was a horrible decision which I'm guessing led to pretty weak sales of that title, which has the effect of FOMO and it will inflate the value based on "collectors".

The open pre-orders have a big advantage, but also a small disadvantage in terms of releases, namely they are no longer limited in that sense. It used to be that the releases were numbered consecutively or even had a certificate if it was a Collector's Edition. Now it's just a Collectors Edition release like many 0815 Collectors Editions. You can also see that on ebay, where the open preorder items have far less value or are sold for far less than the limited ones
@ElAlex2142 жыл бұрын
People are stuck in the Limited aspect but to be honest the games are still limited if you compare them to retail releases of many games. Even if they sold 10k copies or less than 25k i would still consider that limited since you have companies doing over 100k. The problem is that some people want to be egotistical and want to feel like they own an unique game but what that does is create a market for scalpers. To me if a game deserves a physical treatment for us fans to consume then why limit them when a lot of gamers may not have known about them and it would be nice if there were enough copies made for everyone to enjoy them and preserve them without worrying about people scalping them to make a profit out of this nonsense.

However my only gripe is not knowing whether specific games are getting a mass production in the EU, I personally don't want to miss out on the 'title', so any version will do, but having to panic buy from Limited Run, pay the higher price and higher postage charges just to find out a year later I could've bought it from a EU retailer for half the price is a bummer, especially when I prefer to own PAL versions too.

My main issue is production time. I don't have an issue with the prices of the games themselves, many titles interested me, and I like the collectors editions. If they release something I don't want, I just don't buy it. I couldn't care less about collecting every release or having a full set, or even if more copies were printed later making mine less limited. I just want to own the games physically, and I just get what I want and skip the rest. Never had any issues with the quality of the products, and always found customer service helpful. The new system of open preorders is far better than racing to beat bots. The main issue is how long it takes to get the product. That really is my only criticism.

I have done 3 games from them. First was Command and Conquer, which brought it out in high quality graphics. The cool bit, was you could revert back to original graphics.... the difference was insane. It also came with amazing things like a unit art book, a velcro patch for the 2 command and conquer and red alert factions, so 4 patches plus 4 metal pins and a beanie with for patches. It also had a metal cast mammoth tank, which whilst good, needed some paint. It came with three fun plastic pieces, a tesla coil, laser tower which had lights and sounds, as well as a Tiberium plant node with the soundtracks and physical copies of games. Also had tech trees for each faction and poster which I need to get laminated. The second one I am waiting for is KOTOR 1. This one has again, some good stuff with it, and should have been out in late August, which had a change to something I am sure nobody wants, and is currently set to release on 19th November. There was no precise reason given for the product change or the delay, and even after emailing, I still have no real understanding of why it is late. So a bit put out, but it does look like a good investment, especially having a Pazaak deck and lithographs, foil cover strategy guide etcetera. The other game I have pre-ordered was the follow up collectors edition, KOTOR 2, which looks as equally ambitious as the first one, so I am prepped for delays, but with what is in that edition, well, it looks chock-a-block full of goodies and has a second pazaak deck, so yeah, it should be good. Some of these other games I have just randomly looked at, makes me think that they were given a few crates of game merchandise that didn't sell, so they are making a collectors set just to get rid of that stock. Sorry for the long comment, but I wanted to show the point you made about the differences between Premier titles and the non-starters that make you ask why they are doing it.

The Bill & Ted release exists for two reasons : the first is to showcase their Carbon Engine working with a NES game, and the second is to show other videogames rightholders that rereleasing a game based on a media license is actually feasible. So yeah, this release was basically made as an industry-focused showcase, not because fans of the games/movies asked for it. But its existence is kinda necessary if there's to be other rereleases of these kinds of games.

Limited run games needs to fulfill orders first before they release a new game to prevent a back pile of unshipped games. people should never have to wait 6 months - 1 year for a video game to ship
@biggs25602 жыл бұрын
That makes no sense. Why delay other games further, that's even less consumer-friendly.
@magneisuemwinterjuice78102 жыл бұрын
I like them and buy the games that look interesting from them and other "limited" publishers with no complaints. I care more so about preserving the game physically so sometimes the delay in production i don't mind because at times that allows the game to be patched. Some games nowadays are released with game breaking or just horrible bugs.

I've honestly stopped buying from them. Too much too often, with way too long for shipping times almost across the board. Games they have in the warehouse - have been there for two months at the moment.

I got Scott Pilgrim for Switch from Limited Run. I heard they got Plumbers Don't Wear Ties (I'm surprised you actually mentioned that game). Did anyone even ask for that game? Wait, are they releasing the N64 version of Glover? Why not put it on a newer console? Over a year? And I thought waiting 3 months for my heavy duty sword cane was bad. I'm glad I got Scott Pilgrim pretty quickly. I don't remember how long it took but it was under a year. They bit off more than they could chew.

I also think another reason why limited run games has physical game releases like bill & ted, glover, night trap and good pizza great pizza is because of competition. A lot of other publishers also release physical editions of their digital games and some use third party websites or their own to ship out their games. Serenity forge, fangamer, iam8bit, special reserve games, red art games, signature edition games, strictly limited games, play asia, super rare games, wired games and funstock have exclusive games and games available in retail.

Thanks for the solid video RGT 85. Very balanced. I'm with you, I think Limited Run is a good company doing great things to serve a niche and preserve physical media, but the turnaround time is absurd. I agree, they do publish some weird titles... You mentioned Bill and Ted as an example. You can buy that original NES copy for about 1/2 the price of the Limited Run version! As an enthusiast who also collects, I stick to the game genres I enjoy playing and don't go for sets; so I pick and choose which Limited Run games I pre-order and eagerly wait 18 months to receive. Thanks again for the thoughtful video.

My first experience with them is ordering Shredder's Revenge, and I think the turn around time nearly defeats the purpose of what they're trying to accomplish. I very much want to support physical games, and I think LRG is trying to help promote that but like with Shedder's Revenge, that released early July. The PS physical release isn't until Sept 24th. That's nearly 3 months later. So if I want to play it day 1 I need to go digital, no way around that. If the physical release was at least some time around the digital, buying the physical because a viable option. But since the physical releases are so far out from day 1, purchasing the physical just becomes more of a novelty because anyone who really wanted to play the game bought it digitally already. It almost helps rocket up digital sales

I’m STILL waiting for my copy of Shredder’s Revenge I ordered back in early July on Amazon and it was supposed to release on August 31st. Never shipped then noticed on Best Buy’s website that it wasn’t releasing until September 27th now and Amazon didn’t even bother to give me an updated release date. After doing more digging around on what LRG is really all about now and realizing how utterly incompetent and despicable their business practices seem to be, I’m canceling my preorder and just going to buy it digitally which is obviously what I should have done in the first place 3 months ago when the game first came out. I don’t trust LRG with this as far as I can throw them.

If you ordered say 3 games from LRG in one order, They won't ship until the last game drops. If you want each of your games when they come out, you gotta order them individually paying shipping for each.

I have the same issue with Limited Run right now. I never buy the collectors editions either, just the game, and the last two that came took nearly a year to get here. Unbelievable how long it took for River City Girls on PS5 or Crysis 3. It's really putting me off buying anything else.

I have many Limited Run Games in my Switch collection. ALL of them are just the game. No extra fluff. I just want physical games that will survive the inevitable shutdown of online servers. I've been around since the dawn of video games and seen plenty of servers get shut down over the years. People end up losing access to many games that they spent a lot of their hard earned money on. Whenever I have the choice, physical wins hands down! Extra cost of the physical game be damned! FOREVER PHYSICAL!

I’ve only ordered 2 games and I think I’m done ordering from LRG. Ordered the Castlevania collection and it took well over a year to get. On top of that the trading card was just tossed in the box and it’s damaged. Once I get the Zombies Ate my Neighbors collection I’m done. Too bad I really wanted to support LRG.

It's true, now that LRG has a larger distribution via Walmart & BestBuy, their company name can no longer be taken literally. I had a discussion in their discord about their rebranding of castle Vania. I pre ordered and received my Castlevania Anniversary Collection and months later, they resold the same game with a new cover on their website. They argued that it was remaining copies that had not been sold so their take was that the games are still limited. But from my perspective, this was bogus. I could not confirm if what they were saying in discord were true, but that was besides the point. It now meant that the version I had which I thought was limited in print, had another box art version which I didn't own. And as a collector, that just made me feel bad, knowing there are multiple versions available. Some kids in discord yelled at me exclaiming I wanted to keep others from owning the games because I wanted only limited prints. You can't make this stuff up. I argued back, isn't that the point? It's limited? I missed out on Celeste for switch when it was released on LRG but I wanted it for my collection so I took to EBAY and purchased it for 300. Others in discord complain about people like me, wanting to collect, and instead claim the games should be available at all times for all customers. Ok, fine, then perhaps rename your company and its ethos. Though, they are doing what the masses want without changing their name or ethos. So, LRG is beginning to slip and become the monster they likely believed they would never be.

I still buy some games, but at most one game per one or two months. It all depend on the game that they sell. If I don't like it I don't buy it. I haven't had any mayor problems with shipping time (it is ridiculously long but I am never in a hurry to play a game), 4 to 5 months seems to be my average waiting time. The one thing that does annoy me, as an European customer, is the steep increase in overall costs. Every 35 dollars spend turns into something closer to 60 euro's... Last game I bought was 50,- therefor I just don't buy as much as i would want. The doom physical edition is something I found to be super dope but it would be an 80+ euro game for me and considering a second hand Xbox disc is 10... I cannot justify the cost. Ps, great Vid. The subreddits seem to be dissatisfied for a while now with how things are going.

Valid arguments. Limited Run is good with pivoting to make it better (Open Pre-orders, information if a game will make it to Best Buy. The estimated turnaround time etc.) Josh and Doug are really responsive on Twitter. I do wish that they would be more upfront if a game needs online check ins like the Doom collection set. It's the only time I really felt blind sided and otherwise wouldn't have purchased. They did correct this but felt it was too little too late after it was noticed by twitter users. I still order from them and mostly am happy with what I receive.

I still buy games from Limited Run, but not really Collector's editions, unless they have book art (I love them), I just buy the standard edition for reasons of having it in physical format, because digital is not eternal. And yes, the time of 4-6 months to have my games is not the best, in fact, I bought Sheredder's Revenge with them, and the digital edition because it was with discount. Where they delayed the most was in the clothes celebrating Shantae, I ordered them in August 2021, and they just arrived last week. To me, what they are doing is using the sales of pre-sale to know how many of these games to produce, instead to do 200-300-500-1000 copies, not, just the ones that were bought in pre-sale, and a few more in case something happens with shipping or defects.

I just got shipping notification for Quake. Let's see if it arrives before MVG gets his... The other issue is that some recent releases still have online requirements - the versions of Doom 1 and 2 are the DRM-locked 1.0 versions, and Scott Pilgrim has an entire character locked behind a Ubisoft Connect account. It's now at the point where ordering from LRG has no real advantage over retail copies. I'm still ordering from them, but I'm doing so with full knowledge of what I'm getting into and I'll pretty much be limiting myself to the id Software releases from here on out.

I like the open preorder model. Allows people to get their order in before the timeframe closes. Before when they had games limited to 4500 it was always rough trying to get an order in on a popular title. Would sell out quick. I also like that they do get some titles in stores like Best Buy or Amazon which are often faster once they are in stock to get. Sadly the games do take forever to get there but I go in knowing that. I have like 3 or 4 games pending fulfillment.

They need to figure out how to split up orders, so that they ship what is in their warehouse when it comes out, instead of holding orders until everything is available. I have a bunch of orders that were ordered over a year ago that I still haven't received, because some game had a delay in production. I like a lot of what they offer, but most of the time, it just isn't worth the hassle of dealing with Limited Fun Games.

I drive through Apex a lot these days. Wonder if Limited Run would let me take a tour if I knocked on the door? lol Doubt it. When I was working in fire protection I was often contracted out to do inspections of office complexes. One such inspection was of Epic Games. Was actually in the room with developers during the development of Gears 3. It was during the time when I wasn't into gaming as much and really didn't think much of it. Even spoke to Tim Sweeney and didn't realize who he was.

It seems like Limited Run Games is doing so many pre-orders now that they have increased all the production times for everything. It used to be like 6 months for something to come out now it's double that. They have also expanded into more merchandise for Games: Pogs, trading cards, Plushes, skateboard decks etc. While these are really cool and I have bought some of these. It seems like these are also slowing down shipping time, escpecially if you order a few things at one time rather then seperatly. So you either wait longer or pay more in shipping to order items individually which doesn't make much sense.

Just a side rant: It just feels that a lot of the products on their website are just same old same old. Physical game here, stickers here, keychain and artwork here. CD included, posters almost always are there. Maybe a statue. What annoys me is the fact some of them could've went full blown fantastic. SOTN/Castlevania Requiem Ultimate Edition literal specialty is Tom Dubois Art (God Bless his heroic soul), a Keychain, Steelbook, Poster and DVD and little pin badges for well over $200 modern scalper price. The sad part about that product was that Konami were not paying him any money for rereleasing his art. He's confirmed it himself.
