I had a similar experience, although I presented with stable angina. What I would describe as having a flaming icicle deep within my chest that happened as I was loading luggage in a shuttle van. The pain would go away within 30 seconds or so after I sat in the driver's seat. This was happening in the winter when it was very cold, so a rationalized it was the result of breathing the cold air. However, it continued happening as spring approached so I knew what it was without admitting to myself what it was. Then one morning I awoke with the pain, which persisted throughout the day. My chest continued to ache through the next night, and into the next morning, This was not the crushing pain of a full blown heart attack, just a nagging stabbing ache that I knew I could not live with. So a drove myself to the emergency room. The persistent pain is called unstable angina, which is heart attack-like but not total. So I had the procedure described by Matt, although the probe was inserted in my groin. I could see the image of my heart on a monitor, and the injected dye did not travel in any of my coronary arteries, but instead seemed to diffuse across the heart muscle. I was told I needed by-pass surgery. The surgeon used a brachial artery to reroute, and made seven by-pass grafts around blockages. Apparently I had had severe coronary artery disease for decades. I was an avid recreational downhill skier, hiker and backpacker in the Colorado mountains. I would sometimes have that angina-like pain, usually during the first steep powder bump run of the day. This went on for many years, starting when I was in my mid 30's. I figure that my heart compensated for the developing blockages by forming collateral circulation. Despite all that blockage, there is no damage to the heart muscle. I probably owe my current existence to my passion for alpine activity as a young man. My surgery was 18 years ago. I can't say I'm doing fine. I have had some minor angina-like discomfort recently, have had it checked out, and they say my heart is doing OK. But I live for each day, have resolved to be happy each day, for any moment could be my last. And I know that when I die I will be dead. No afterlife for me. And I am perfectly happy knowing that.

Seems exercise helps but by no means prevents heart disease as some people claim. I have a friend whom I used to go sailing with, life long martial arts practitioners, got thorough health check every year for his pilot licence, in his seventies and yet fit as a forty years old, and yet two years ago he had to undergo heart surgery. I don't remember if it was coronary bypass or aortic valve replacement anyway it was something that happens to old people, same as my mom who is overweight and never exercised. My friend has perfectly recovered now. He's planting a new vineyard so I guess he's planning on living for many many years.

My grandpa had his chest open way back in the 60s when it was kinda unheard of. He told me they tied his ribs with wire. After the surgery and in recovery grandpa hated coughing because he said the two slices of the sternum would rub causing pain. Out of the darkness though, I remember his pacemaker making a tick and he told my cousins and I it was that alligator from Peter Pan. We use to spend the weekends there and end up having to go to church with him and grandma. Though I'm not religious I wouldn't change a thing because I got memories of listening to the ticking and all the fishing trips after church with him or the big breakfast before.

Had a similar story. Back in 2015 at the age of 59, I started having chest pain whenever I exerted myself (I'm was an avid cyclist). After self-diagnosing via the web but not getting better, I finally made an appointment with a doctor (thank you Obamacare!) who decided to keep me overnight (?!!) for more tests (angiogram and fluoroscopy). Surprise! I had what they called "slow angina"; I was lucky - some people just die. They decided to book me on Christmas Day for open heart surgery (quintuple bypass). They took a vein out of my right leg and another from my left arm. I survived the surgery, but it was an ordeal the first few days, being too nauseous to eat with no appetite. But, I eventually got better. After about 6 months, I was able to ride my motorcycle again, and after a year I was able to perform strenuous exercise, again. About a year before this happened, I was introduced to the concept of a whole-foods plant-based diet, which I *mostly* converted to immediately. Rather than eating animal proteins every day, three times a day which I had my entire life (~1095 meals per year over 58 years) I went "mostly vegan," but I was apparently too late to reverse the damage. I still eat animal protein, but very rarely. From 1095 meals per year, I cut it down to about 16 times a year. I'm now 66 years old and planning to build an earth-sheltered home in the Sierra foothills and just bought a new hang glider and harness to resume flying, again. I highly recommend reading the book, "The China Study," by Dr. T. Colin Campbell. It's written for the layperson and in it, he describes the study he headed for 20+ years involving thousands of subjects and hundreds of doctors and clinicians. His conclusion: the less animal protein you consume (fish, fowl, meat, dairy), the less you'll be likely to suffer from the "diseases of affluence" (cancer, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, dementia, autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, gout, shingles, rheumatoid arthritis and many more).

It’s good Mat pulled through and is able to continue doing his part to make the world a better place. Thank goodness to *Medical Science* , researchers, Doctors, Nurses…that I support and hope it advances so far there will be virtually none unlucky enough not to get the healthcare treatment they need.

All these losers do is spread lies. Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space, and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it. We KNOW these laws. We have NO doubts about them. We also KNOW that the laws of nature can't come about without a Lawgiver, God. So if you want to pretend to be smart, please give me the laugh by giving your science how creation really happened by natural means. Also, throw in how we got the laws of nature, naturally. Life only comes from life. Law of biogenesis. When I had my open heart surgery, the second day my heart went into an unusual rhythm & for some reason they felt the need to wake me up & there were about 5 or 6 doctors & nurses around me & I remember one nurse was squeezing for all she was worth on an IV bag, but, my only comment to them was "Just wake me up if I die, otherwise, let me sleep." & I remember the doctor cracked a smile & I did go back to sleep after all there really was nothing I could do about the situation...
@fritzhaselnuss78522 жыл бұрын
pretty much the same. When I encounter a difficult situation I go through all the options I have at my disposal but if I cant do a single thing about it I dont worry either. I think in this kind of situation my biggest worry would ve been "do I have all my things in order? Talked to people for the potentially last time?" but worrying about the OP going well? Not so much

Well of course Matt has a physical heart but more than that he has a heart heart. For all his swearing cussing at his callers on The Atheist Experience ``No, no, no Sir your Done!`` underneath it all is a deeply empathetic human being (not to mention a good working brain) we Love you Matt!

Regarding the question of having your affairs in order, in fact there is something that is called a "In Case I Go Missing Folder" that everyone should have. Granted, very few of us do (I even know about it and don't have one), which has important information. Things like passwords and account information that important parties can access. For example, if you go missing it allows them to access your bank accounts to see if there is any activity, or your phone records. Sure, the police can get that with a warrant, but it can take a while for that to happen and in case of an emergency, timeliness is important. You can make it a sealed folder, open only if I go missing, but it's something that people think about. And don't wait until you are on your death bed to write a will.
