Mewing is unlikely to grow your jaws. However, you can still change your face. You can incorporate other facial exercises to add muscle into your face. You can exercise your tongue and upper airway muscles which will make you sleep better. Better sleep will make you look sharper and more pleasant. Finally, do you know how to keep your posterior tongue up? This improves your neck definition immediately. @@zed8243

@@coachpyry it sounds like you have to keep this tension on your tongue all day which sounds dreadful. At what point can you stop doing this? Is it a lifetime thing? It sounds completely unnatural to walk around like this all day and go your work or whatever not to mention being conscious of your tongue all day.
@coachpyry
@coachpyry 10 ай бұрын
Great question. However, it shows that you've misunderstood the point with "mewing". Let's not call it "mewing". Let's call it for what it is. It's the natural resting position of the tongue. You should not walk around focusing on it all day. The tongue should stay up there unconsciously. If it doesn't stay up there during the day, then there is a big change if it doesn't stay there during the night either, and because of your age, I'm going to be bold enough and say that you're dealing with some level of obstructive sleep apnea due to a smaller airway space because of that tongue that's resting lower in your airway than it's supposed to. (I know because I was even when I was 27 years old). Yes, change is always daunting, but the negative complications of not dealing with this right now will have even more horrendous repercussions (google about obstructive sleep apnea). You only need to be aware of the new habit during the re-training phase until you move towards unconscious competence. Right now, you've realised you don't do it unconsciously. You are "consciously incompetent". Next you have to become consciously competent through deliberate practice. Consistent, deliberate practice makes you unconsciously competent, at which point it's second nature and you don't have to waste any energy for it. @@gregm55mullen62

Bro! This video is COMPLETELY underrated! This information it's actually really f*ucking useful!! Every video out there are pictures of teen kids growing up while mewing, and one can't really tell if it was mewing or if the kid just wasn't developed in the before picture. Or maybe both? Idk, the main point is that you made it very clear that is possible to change your face structure as an adult. The evidence you provide is the more legit I've ever seen, so thank you for this! I've been mewing for the past four months or so, and I was quite unmotivated because I'm not seeing much of a change. But after watching this video I've got my hopes up!

Thanks, Manuel, for the great feedback! Remember that the benefits of optimal tongue posture go beyond just the facial structure. The ability to breathe through the nose, get sick less often, tolerate more stress and sleep better will accelerate every aspect of your life. Facial aesthetics are just the cherry on top of the cake.

To me, there are very clear, visible differences between your before/after photos and x-rays. I would send your material toMike Mew and get him to explain exactly what those differences are. He's always interested in people who have measured the changes in the way that you have. Can you use a "measuring line" tool to measure potential growth in the second x-ray? A line starting and ending at the same points in each x-ray would tell you. Funny how your dentist said that there's no way of really telling because your posture is different in each of the x-rays. Well of course your posture is different - mewing has dramatically improved your oral, body and facial posture and that's clear to see!! That's what mewing does, as well as gradual expansion, which once again, I would say you have very clearly achieved. Orthodontic consensus gets a big fat "X" from me. Thanks so much for the video.
@coachpyry
@coachpyry 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your opinion, Sandra! That’s exactly what a Jefferson analysis does. Specific landmarks are identified in the orofacial complex and these are compared with one another to see whether the bones have moved or not. I’m not trying to downplay the benefits of having your tongue against the roof of the mouth, however since there was no significant jaw growth (based on the Jefferson analysis), my best hypothesis for the more dramatic changes in the facial profile are due to increased muscle tone of the orofacial muscles. As explained in the video, I followed a progressive strength and conditioning training program for these muscles.

Your facial features have definitely improved. Your chin is larger and square and setting in a more forward position. If you carefully look at lower third of your face, you can see that it's much more projected. There's also a clear evolution with your gonial angle. Your mandibule is really better defined. Through my years of mewing I've discovered a technic to measure changes without X-rays. Your beard keeps the same location. But if you look carefully the way your beard is now surrounding your jaws, gonial angles and ramus is slightly different. My last obvious point is that your face seen from a front view is clearly larger.

Thanks man! Well, as you can see in the X-Ray analysis, there was no significant jaw growth. Therefore I think that most of the “gains” are due to the progressive strength and conditioning training of the muscles of the face, tongue and throat. So, based on the above, I would recommend to supplement your tongue posture habit with some myofunctional exercises for the muscles of the face for the best results 👍

Cheers! I think that the question is: Effective for what? The term mewing can be misleading. In my opinion, it should be called "optimal tongue posture". The funny thing is that you don't need any evidence. All you need is to look at the anatomy of the upper airway. The very moment you find the optimal tongue posture, your upper airway will dilate, and it will become easier to breathe. Very effective if you ask me! Not to mention the observed benefits of a stronger tongue and nasal breathing on snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. What kind of benefits have you noticed so far?

You have the best videos on this. It's funny that when someone else has a problem, like snoring - all their relations find out a lot of stuff as well benefitting us all. I had a few teeth taken out as a child and that can alter the state of the mouth and affect breathing and the shape of the jaw. Found out about this from James Nestor's book Breath.

@@lorae7 ther is an app, SnoreGym, it helps me. It is basically mewing, I came to this trough sleep apnea. It is exercises to strengthen the tongue, throat, jaw muscles... so that your tongue doesn't fall and choke you. btw I had to pull my teeth out in my 30s, 2 I really had to because they were already inflamed, but they wanted to pull 3 more of them because "they are useless". So all together they would remove 5! I did not allow it, I allowed just the 2 inflamed ones. Even with 2 surgical opinions. It was more logical to me to keep the teeth, even if they are useless... somehow better to live with useless teeth than to have none?? I mean they don't touch and have grown in a bit false directions. Later I started reading Breath from James Nestor, I think he was the inspo for this whole mewing uprising and popularisation. he said that removing the teeth creates the apnea. I am really happy I didn't pull them out. I did not finish it yet but it is very informational, I noticed that Mike Mew from Orthotropics pulls a lot of info from there.

You do look better in the after photos. The structure in the cheek is enhanced. Good job. I too had teeth removed as a child for crowding. But as an adult, I just intuitively knew my tongue didn’t rest properly in my mouth. I developed filet marks on the sides of my tongue from resting my tongue on my lower teeth and that bothered me, making me feel like I had a fat tongue. My tongue was normal, it was my palate that was too small. I asked my orthodontist about tongue posture and he didn’t have any answers. I found Dr Mew by accident, searching for answers my orthodontist could not provide. I’ve been mewing for about a year, no more filet marks on my tongue, more comfort and it’s easy to do. Thank you.

On the side shots your head is tilted backwards more, this makes the chin look stronger and the jaw more defined. It's evident looking at the forehead and the straight lines in the background. Same thing for the front shots. I can't tell if you also pushed your face forward, but if you did it would make even more difference. It's all about posture, not structural changes.

When Mike talks about bone growth he is usually referring to patients under the age of 10 years old which is the focus of his practice. A person stops growing after 25 years old, mewing then becomes a practice in adults to form proper function of the jaw. In the results, even though your bone hasn't "grown" the slight increase in forward position is a healthier and more functional position for the face to be in. Even though mewing wont make your bones grow it will change the STRUCTURE of your skull.

You mean the muscular posture?
@cooperthiesz1987
@cooperthiesz1987 10 ай бұрын
@@sweetbeep The Maxilla (upper Jaw) and Mandible (Lower Jaw) are seperate bones connected via the jaw joint and its the position of these two in relation to each other that creates the position of the jaw. healthy and good looking position of the jaw is up and forward and craniofacial dystrophy (unhealthy and unattractive) occurs when the jaw is set back and down because of a forward head position which is a symptom of overall bad posture. space in the mouth and width of the face can also be naturally increased through mewing because the bones arent rigid but have these sutures running inbetween them which creates room for expansion when the tongue applies pressure to the roof of the mouth. (if you dont undestand look it up). Muscle tone can also have an apparent affect on the aesthetics of the face but not as impactful as bone structure. And also bad posture can be influenced by the muscles in and around the jaw and neck if they are tightened (shortened) or relaxed (lengthened)

I see some clear differences. Specifically: 1) To me it is clear as day in the profile shots (10:00) that your chin is now farther forward. In the before pics, you can see that the tip of your chin is directly in line with the tip of your bottom lip. But in the after pics, it is farther forward (even after correcting for the slight backward tilt of your head in the afters.) 2) In the profile shots (10:00) look at the line of your cheek right at the end of your mustache where your face crease is. On the left, the line is straight down. On the right, it clearly bows forward. 3) In all the before pictures, the corners of your mouth droop down into a very slight frown. In all the after pictures, they turn slightly up into a very slight smile. This could just be due to your expression at the time. 4) In all pics, the exposed surface of your eyes appears to be narrower than in the before shots. Possible you're just "squinching" ever so slightly, but usually squinching is betrayed by creases at the edge of your eyes. Not as sure about this one though because it seems as though the after profile shots were taken from a slightly higher angle. Have you kept up with mewing in the past year? Noticed any changes? Cheers

8:56 the "S" Shape or Ogee Curve (or whatever you would call it) looks much more pronounced and improved, from cheeks to your chin (which now seems to stand out much more defined). Before everything was more like one vertical line, now you seem to have more of a curve. Even though it is hard to really see it as we don't see your face in exactly the same angle there? It is really hard to judge. The only way to know is for you to keep going and keep tracking the results like that! (13 months is not really a lot of time for a grown-up to make a real difference). The problem with making videos of these exercises is that the ones that are the most powerful ones require fine motor control of the face, tongue and upper airway muscles. You need to follow a logical series of progressions from very simple tasks to those more complex and challenging exercises. That's why I call it progressive orofacial myofunctional training. I've created a six week program which includes the exact progression of exercises I've used and progressive breathing re-training exercises. The program is called Breathe Sleep Perform, and you can find out more from: www.coachpyry.com/breathe

Hey Coach, great video. Also surprised you don't have more subs. I had/have open bite and a cross bite, due to tongue thrust as a youth. Didn't get braces to attempt to fix it until I was 30. Had braces twice now. It's mostly fixed the open bite but not the cross bite, nor the under developed maxilla. I had a strong bottom jaw and underbite. Thankfully they only removed one molar from the top, but they did take two from the bottom. I also suffered from issues breathing through my nose due to deviated septum etc etc but I'm sure it was all related. I started doing tongue retraining in my 30's when I got my first set of braces and it definitely helped a lot to retrain the default position of the tongue. But only now just trying to actually mew more regularly and consistently at age 41. Keep up the great videos. Keen to see a progress X ray in another year or two!

I think this was a great video, and I see no intentions in the creator on trying to disprove mewing at all. More of him trying his best to find the truth. There's a channel I recommend you checking out called 'It's all connected' (used to be called The Mewing Channel) where a guy is keeping track of his year's progress. It's quite a dramatic improvement, I'd like to read your opinion.

In the side on view your nose has a different angle it is slanted back more and the tip is up more....this is good.

You’re very observant! My grief is that the angle of the head is slightly different too which makes the direct comparison a bit more difficult. Wait, are you talking about the X-ray or the photo?

In the first face forward mouth closed photo, I noticed that in the before photo, your mouth corners turn downwards in a frown position, whereas in the after photo, on both sides but especially your left, the corners begin to turn upwards, Also, in the before photos the eyes are large and almost show whites under the irises, while in the after photo the lower eyelids rise up to clearly cover the lower boundary of the irises. Also look at the eyes, drawing a horizontal line from side to side. In both photos the right eye is below the left (smaller maxilla/right side of face), but I think the right side rose up a little in the after photo. Adult bones do change in response to pressure or lack thereof, only much slower than children, naturally.

Thanks for sharing your detailed observations. Sure, but I've also been exercising my facial muscles. Do you think that some of the changes could be attributed to having more muscle in the face? Especially when it comes to the less frowning and less scleral show?
@gainingstrength7859
@gainingstrength7859 10 ай бұрын
@@coachpyry Developing the facial muscles may contribute. However, you know that all muscles are anchored to and pull on bones. Exercising your facial muscles will therefore affect the bones as well. I don't believe it is one or the other alone, developing the muscles will develop the bones as a matter of course (it is one musculoskeletal system). In the before x-ray your upper and lower incisors barely meet. In the after x-ray you appear to have a very slight overbite of upper incisors. I don't think this is only due to head posture because if you angle your jaw downward so the roof of your mouth angles downward (before x-ray) this tends to retract the mandible, which contributes to overbite posture, and when you lift your head to make roof of mouth parallel to ground (after x-ray) this tends to move mandible forward, reducing overbites. But your x-rays show opposite, i.e. more underbite before and overbite after. This contributes to my thinking that the apparent changes measured may in fact be real. At the very least practicing good tongue posture seems to have produced a better positioning of maxilla to mandible (as well as better head posture). However, combined with the reduced showing of sclera, the measured and visible changes in x-ray, and upward movement of corners of mouth I am inclined to suspect a small forward and upward development of the maxilla. I am guessing the dentist/orthodontist who did the imaging does not think tongue posture can change bone development in adults. Therefore he is going to explain away any finding that causes cognitive dissonance for him. He might even view the idea as a threat to his livelihood, thinking "if people can correct their oral issues without my help, how do I make a living?" He's got skin in the game of professional interventions. In any case I wouldn't regard his one opinion as final word, and I certainly wouldn't abandon the practice. It will be interesting to see what changes in a another year of practice. Nothing to lose, at least you breathe better and sleep better by training tongue posture.

You bring up very interesting points. Actually, the practice I visited is very focused on "airway focused myofunctional preventative dentistry", albeit mostly for children, so yes, he might have biases for adults. In fact, I did already post the before/afters after another year of practice, in this video. What do you think? kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6esp4Gpqs9nmsk @@gainingstrength7859

I have been mewing for 2 years now I'm very happy with the results even tho it's not a vast difference Always remember it's not about how long it's about how perfectly you do it

Well, knowing what proper tongue posture does to airway shape, it would be ideal to have the tongue carpeted against the roof as much as possible. Maybe you should compliment your mewing with progressive strength and conditioning exercises for the muscles of your face 👍 (Orofacial myofunctional training)

9:25 can easily be mistaken for some type of jaw improvement but all it is is lower bodyfat and a slight upward face tilt with groomed facial hair to make the jawline more visible.

Thank you for sharing your opinion. Really appreciate it. I agree about the body fat. I've been helping people lose body fat since 2016, and every person who has been successful has changed the way their face and jaw look. I did not measure body fat levels between these photos, but I'd actually say that my body composition remained pretty much the same. The other thing that makes things murky is the amount of fluid retention. Poor sleep, which is what I used to have, increases water retention in the body, and also in the face. I was sleeping million times better in the second photo, which could also explain some of the visual change. What do you think of the 2023 updated shots? kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6esp4Gpqs9nmsk&lc=UgyL2LamLZaeuvHaz3p4AaABAg

Drastic change brother wow definitely have more of a masculine face now!! Heard about Mewing 2 months ago, but actually started about a week ago. Do u think me being 19 years old I’ll see results faster ?
@coachpyry
@coachpyry 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers man. As explained in the video since there was no significant jaw growth I don't know how much of the results can be attributed to mewing. The notable changes seem to be due to increased muscle tone in the face, and this is because I have been training the facial, tongue and throat muscles with OMT exercises.
