Great Video. You never cease to amaze me. I run the 6 stage RODI unit from BRS and have some issues with water in my area here in texas that this looks like it will finally help. I had close to the same initial city water readings as you do in Minnesota. I'm going to go this route with the extra canister and do as you did here in this video. I'm about to start another aquarium, my dream 400 gallon, actually been working on it for over 2 years collecting the equipment, should finally have water in it in about 2 months. So this was good timing for this video. Thank you!!

What is the best environment (temperature & humidity) to store D.I. resin?
@Warren763175 жыл бұрын
You're 5 days late on this vid Ryan. I just bought new filters and was planning on going with part 1 and 2 of the pro di you sell which just arrived this morning. My tank is just recuperating from .5 micron filter failure during the dog days of July through September chloramine increase my city adds to the water. Thought i had the right solution but now I see i need another canister or maybe a dual because i want 2 universal carbons and 1 Chlorplus. I put together 2, 4 stage systems with dual membrane filters to save some waste water. It wasn't a big deal since i just had to switch the last canister with the first two and rerouting the lines. So now I need a mixed bed and another can. Or.. A dual so I can run 2 sediment filters. Lost a few corals when the filters expired to soon this summer. It was a switch I will never do again. To me .5 micron filters are not mad to be use alone in a small 4 stage system. I'd still use them but only if they have a 1. before them. Thanks for the video I greatly appreciate the passion you and all the people at BRS put into you business and the hobby. If the whole world was ran like BRS The world would be a beautiful place to live.

I'm liking these details, forces me to think. To clarify, was the Anion->Mixed configuration tested instead of Cation->Mixed because anion resin normally depletes faster? Secondly, what has been the difference in water volume-to-resin depletion between resin placed after RO vs. resin right after the carbon blocks?

Question - If I'm setup with a 6 stage RODI system I would switch from using "Mixed Bed Color Changing Anion Bulk Deionization Resin" in both canisters to "Anion Single Bed Color Changing Bulk Deionization Resin" > "Mixed Bed Color Changing Cation Bulk Deionization Resin"?
@HuskyKMA7 жыл бұрын
In industry, we use the cation and anion resin separately in our boiler feedwater demineralizers. So no, they don't need to be mixed. Cation first, anion second. We regenerate our resins once silica breaks on the anion, it's too expensive to throw away.

I actually like the idea of using a 3 stage DI mixed, will mostly like switch over. I knew that mixed DI resin could possible catch everything out of the tap water and that some would just pass right thur, just possible since some elements have no charge.

I've been having some leakage of trimethylamine from my mixed bed DI system (specifically, the anion component). Any ideas on how to correct that? It's making the humidifier that I use it for stink up the whole house. I've been thinking about moving to a dual bed system, but I want to be careful to get the correct resins that I need to avoid the exact thing happening again. I'm thinking the cartridge may have just gotten depleted, but unfortunately, I don't have color changing resin (anion) for my di filter.

Thank you for the info! I have some standard (blue) mixed bed DI left over from before but I want to add an anion canister- I can still run that combination correct?
@BRStv4 жыл бұрын
Technically you could, but if you're switching over to the full on Pro Series triple resin configuration, you may want to use up your standard mixed bed resin first, then swap over afterwards.

Hello, I would like to purify rainwater (between 40 and 50 PPM) with 3 DI vessels (not cartridge) in line. One DI vessel with anion resin only, a second one with cation resin only and a third one for "polishing" with mixed bed resin. The purpose is of course to last longer with my resins and not to put in the garbage a saturated mixed bed resin when the anion or the cation part of this mixed bed is actually not saturated yet. I would like a TDS meter after each DI vessel to know which resin to change and when... For example : i put rainwater 45 PPM in the first DI vessel with anion resin, the PPM after the first DI vessel with anion resin is 25 PPM, the water goes after in the second DI vessel with cation resin and goes out with 5 PPM. After the last DI vessel with mixd bed resin, the PPM is 0. This means that when the PPM of the first TDS meter is around 45 PPM, it's time to change the anion resin in the first DI vessel. This means that when the PPM of the second TDS meter is around 25 PPM, it's time to change the cation resin in the second DI vessel. This means that when the PPM of the third TDS meter is around 5 PPM, it's time to change the mixed bed resin in the third DI vessel. Do you know a company who can sell me this system (3 DI vessels connected inline with TDS meter after each vessel) ? Thanks in advance for answer !
@AdzJJ6 жыл бұрын
Just set up my 3 stage cation anion mixed bed di stages. At the moment I have 2 TDS meters set up but ordered a couple more but at the moment it reads after the membrane and after the cation. The strange thing is after the membrane my tds is 5 but then after the cation it’s raised to 8 tds. Is this down to the chemical process in the cation or is there an issue here? At the end of the system it is coming out at 0 tds. When I get my new inline reader I will be placing one after the anion and the mixed bed to see each stage so I know when it raises that it needs to be changed. Anything you see that is wrong at the with my setup?

I may be late on this question, it probably has been covered elsewhere. What is the recommendation for a water softener? Run the ro/di before or after it? How will it effect the water quality at the end?
@Sylvan_dB7 жыл бұрын
a water softener simply exchanges ions in the water with sodium or potassium ions (depending on what you use to regenerate your softener). Definitely do not run a softener after RO or after DI. In fact, your water softener is actually filled with ion exchange resin similar to DI resin. One key difference is the ion exchange resin is regenerated with either sodium or potassium and if you were to regenerate DI resin you need the anion and cation separate as one is regenerated with acid (usually hydrochloric) and the other with base (lye or sodium hydroxide).
@pjshooter67 жыл бұрын
Sylvan Butler yeah i guess i wasnt clear on the before or after. When i said before the softener, i ment completely seperate from the system. Split line before so the feed to the di would be straight city water.

So I purchased everything to try this out for myself and i'm completely confused. here are my current results, I'm running 3 canisters: Canister 1 ...cation(purple). Canister 2 ...anion(blue).... Canister 3 mixed bed (purple). So far not sure what to make of it just yet...i have 196 ppm coming from my well. I have 12 ppm coming into canister 1 from the RO feed... yet I have 26 ppm between canister 1 and canister 2. Between canister 2 and canister 3 I have 2 ppm. And on the output of canister 3 I have 0 ppm. Between canister 1 and 2 has me completely baffled as to how or why this would be higher then the amount coming in from the RO feed?
@BryanByTheSea7 жыл бұрын
Often wondered why we get so focused on stripping the water to almost unmeasurable contaminants with a RO/DI solution and then mix with a salt water mix that adds back a lot of the contaminants.
@roberttaylor22846 жыл бұрын
If there is some TDS after RO, there are still some contaminants. However, the proportion of each is beyond your control. With pure water, you can control the water quality precisely. That said, a small amount of TDS probably makes little difference. Even less so if you have a planted tank and cut the water with tap water.

why is it when I only use anion resin my ppm stays the same or raises ppm. it's new resin.
@BRStv4 жыл бұрын
If you're running the single bed anion resin, you'll also want to run a mixed bed or cation resin with it. Best practice would be cation -> anion -> mixed bed. When you run just one single bed resin, you likely won't see a TDS drop because all it's doing is swapping ions, not necessarily removing them. When you combine the two resins, that's when the removal occurs.

What does DI stands for?
@BRStv3 жыл бұрын
It stands with deionization resin. Basically a media that removes contaminants with an electrical charge. Think of it as a final polishing stage for an RO system

I always wondered why you guys don't carry the Spectrapure High Capacity Silicabuster DI cartridges (SpectraPure® SilicaBuster DI Cartridge - Color-Indicating - SuperDI (DI-SB-CI-10HC)). It's the highest purity DI resin available and the best at removing Silica. You guys are great about supplying the best options for RO/DI stuff. You should carry it. Personally, I think 3 DI canisters is way overkill and completely unnecessary in real world situations for the handful of people this would affect, but I get it for the testing results. Ryan even said you'd basically never have to change the 3rd canister. I'd like to see the Spectrapure placed against your brand and see the results. Granted, the Spectrapure is more expensive, but it lasts longer, for me, and the cartridge is pre made.

Hi. Using a mixed resins in one canister is a nonsense, as similar as using activated carbon with ROWA in one reactor. All these adsorbents get different capacity. So, they have a different operating time. By using mixed bed you assume that capacity is the same. You also assume that composition of positive/negative charge in your water is similar - why ?. You have to replace the entire resin if only one component is exhausted - it is simply wasting an expensive adsorbent. I prefer to run them separately and I do exchange only exhausted resin. The operating time depends on many factors - not only capacity of resin. Cheers - Piotr.

Sounds like you need 3 cartridges. An, cat, mixed.
@BRStv3 жыл бұрын
That would be the best way to run them, but cation first, anion second, then the mixed bed. That way, it's easy to change out just the resin type that is being used up (usually anion resin).
