I heard quite recently that the human/dog relationship is much older than previously thought. Instead of 12,000 years, it is now believed to be as long as 30,000 years, maybe. And the scientists didn't call it a relationship. They called it co-evolution. I seems that dogs only BARK to us humans. It is most-likely their attempt to talk to us, because they see how much talking WE do. Wild dogs do not do barking between themselves. This would explain why so many people can hear if a dog barking is happy/sad/angry... etc.
@effyleven8 жыл бұрын
***** That's not what I heard, I got it from an expert talking about what is special about dogs compared with wolves. Besides which, feral dogs are domesticated dogs gone feral... they are not wild in the sense that wolves are wild.

Dog can bark and whine at the same time. Like in that bark but, it depends on what one they do most. That may be just my dog.

The first dog that barked wasn't angry. It was nervous, frightened, and confused. You can't tell that by its bark, but by its stance, its tail, it's ears, and it's eyes. But if you did try to stick your hand through the the cage it would still bite it, not because he was angry, but because of the reasons I listed.

4:47 I had a magazine a long time ago that talked about understanding dog barks and dog body language. One of the things I remember is that a dog's "play growl," which you hear while dogs tug on toys, is more vocal than a true growl. I'm pretty sure that kind of logic extends to other areas - generally if you hear a dog making a lot of "Ruuuruuuruuoooroooruuur" noises they're very excited!
@VGAstudent3 жыл бұрын
I believe the most remarkable thing about animals trying to communicate with us, is that they actually TRY. It's amazing, going from instinctual vocalizations for the purposes of warning, breeding and finding, mostly instinctual, to vocalizations with a specfic purpose and intent; language -- that's an utterly revolutionary step for an animal's evolution.

I've learned that dogs can not see the color red at all, so when you told your dog Oliver to "get your bone", which is red, he can not see it in the grass because the color red does simply not exist to him. It's not because he's stupid he didn't get the bone when you told him to, he simply could not see it.
@nickybuttons64438 жыл бұрын
Humans can see red green and blue, along with combinations and variations of those three colors and with that we can see every color (that we know of, its kinda borderline impossible to describe colors we cannot see because you need to see them for yourself, some colorblind people can see these unique and alien colors, point being we can see virtually all colors). Dogs primarily see yellows and blues. They struggle to see greens and reds at all. Thus while dogs have superior hearing and smelling to humans we have superior sight, humans being sight oriented creatures. So when it sees green grass and a red bone they appear... well its hard to tell but likely grey or white. Colorless. Thus they would blend into each other, however they would be able to see the bone still. It'd just be harder when it basically camoflauges into the grass.
@krystallvinter74388 жыл бұрын

David Lam That is a myth that is popular because *some* breeds have genetic health problems that good breeders will screen for but bad breeders will not, therefore keeping the problems in the genetic pool of the dogs they're breeding. Mixed dogs and mutts can have the same genetic problems that purebreds do it's just that usually they are mixed enough for those genes to be diluted. I have had vets tell me though that dogs that come from good breeders who screen for health problems usually live longer, healthier lives then mutts of the same size.

I absolutely believe we can learn to speak dog! My dog Lucky (picture) who I've had for 10 years, have a lot of particular sounds that I've learned to separate. He likes to bark at random objects through the night, like announce at the couch before jumping up on it etc. This hardly ever wakes me up. He's got a particular sound for when I'm on the edge of the bed and he wants to jump up, that doesn't wake me up fully, but makes me roll over, and one for "I need to go out RIGHT NOW", and that one wakes me up instantly, because I know it's urgent.
@ThatsSoGiorgio5 жыл бұрын
At 0:59 stating my opinion on this “animals understanding is” idea. I just got a puppy not too long ago and she’s becoming very well trained, she’s pretty smart for her age (1 year) but she still has soooo much to learn. Take my 7 (almost 8) year old cat, I feel like I genuinely understand him. He has different meows (his “hello” vs his “I’m hungry” meows differ very much) and I’ve learned to understand what his different toned meows mean. I can actually recognize a meow like I can understand an “Excuse me” at a public store. And I know dogs can understand tones because if I’m mad at something and yell out loud then my dog will look in my direction and look startled because that’s the same tone I use to yell at her if she pees in the house or does something bad. So I’m sure you can train a dog to understand about 80% of your words (with very high praise and reward) but I believe any animal or living organism with a brain complex enough to interact, adapt and understand the world around them can learn. A dog by itself would almost never learn how to open a door and I’ve come to understand this by the many dogs I work with who go to the wrong side of the door 80% of the time (assuming their front door of the house opens the other way) they would eventually learn the door opens from the right side after constant exposure such as learning very neat tasks. Once the dog understands certain terms, they just need to be able to piece it together. My dog understands her tricks with or without words, I trained her with hand motions to accompany it so she can do all her tricks with only my hand motions or no hand motions and words only as they are interchangeable to her.

you mean crate training?
@lechywecky8 жыл бұрын
No. I meant in general. Obedience training, training the dog to do stupid tricks, the master-slave relationship where it's the dog's role to be a subservient pet that fills a void in the owner's life. I'm not criticising the culture of dog ownership and companionship, but some people are clearly far less enlightened than others when it comes to fixing their broken puppy and turning it into a presentable dog-bot.
@jeanviergoveia21028 жыл бұрын
meh_hi_there yeah you're right, dogs are companions
@Gatzlocke8 жыл бұрын
They are domesticated animals. It is a master-slave relationship. Just like for Horses. Dogs were not always housepets, they had jobs. Then again, humans didn't have much luxury time either in the ancient old days.

Always been my belief that dogs know more about us than we know about them. They sure are smart, some breeds more than others. Dogs accept people for what they are. I'd talk my dog all time and swear he understood me. I wouldn't want to think of life without dogs.

I don't like to go into personal history but I have an assistant dog as I am someone who is on the autistic spectrum and I don't think people understand quite how much a dog can change someones life, the responsibility and love I have for my dog has made me less of an introvert and more of a social person and I love my dog so much and he loves me, whenever i feel stressed or down my dog comes to me and rests his head on my shoulder to let me know he's there, wagging his tail, and whenever i sense my dog is stressed I give him a hug, a rub and scratch on the belly and words of relief such as "good boy" and this codependent relationship is really what I needed to help me become the person I am, if I was totally dependent on my dog I would have never grown, if my dog was totally dependent on me, I wouldn't have felt the connection I do as I wouldn't have had someone to be there for me which I needed, it is this codependency that makes having a dog so special.

@ 3:44 - what about cats tho? Every cat I’ve ever had has always made a lot of eye contact with me. Especially the cats I have right now... when I talk to them they’ll look right in my eyes, and when _they_ talk to _me_ (which is a lot...my cats are very, very communicative 😸) they look in my eyes too. My favorite is when they’re trying to get my attention or when I’ll lock eyes with one of them from across the room (lol and yes it is as romantic as it sounds 😹) and they get really excited and get up and run over to me, keeping eye contact the whole time. Lol k didn’t mean for this to be a love letter to my cats, but rly just curious about that statement that dogs are the only non-primate animals to seek out eye contact with humans... is that just a general statement, like that it might be seen in other species but dogs are the only ones who consistently do it as an entire species? Or is there something else I’m missing?
@AlphaTengua5 жыл бұрын
Its a biased incorrect fact. People don't associate with cats enough to know their true natures and potentials. they generally care about dogs more and seem to favor them for some reason. i guess one reason is typically cats can't (or more so wont) do a lot of things dogs do like sit give paw etc. but some have, upon their choice. but a cat most likely wont be able to pull a drowning person outta water while a large dog could - and thus - people assume cats are assholes who dont care cuz of it. IE "Dogs are a better" i disagree though, they are just more gifted.

dogs licking faces is disgusting and unhygienic.
@Dunkle0steus9 жыл бұрын
Most humans I know brush their teeth. I have kissed a few people. I also had the misfortune of laughing while being knocked to the ground by an English pointer. The pointer thought it would be a good idea to lick my tongue as my mouth was open. Most revolting and disgusting experience I've ever had. It took hours of soap to get the taste out of my mouth. Anyone who says Dog mouths are clean is lying out their ass. They're filthy. They lick their genitals and eat their own poop.
@migueltorres61459 жыл бұрын
You do know kissing is the exchange of bacteria. Same is with dogs. Btw, some toothpastes have chemicals that can slightly raise the chance of cancer.
@Dunkle0steus9 жыл бұрын
Miguel Torres give me a source on those facts. Do you know what else increases the chance of cancer? Sunlight. Concrete. There is absolutely no reason not to brush your teeth.
@subh19 жыл бұрын
Dunkleosteus Humans are the only freaks in animal kingdom to do something as unhygienic as brushing. You destroy the healthy bacterial colony in your mouth every day by brushing, and the bacterial colony in your guts need to work all over again to re-establish it. Without your gut flora you won't be able to digest a single piece of food, and digestion starts in the mouth with your saliva. And we share & exchange useful bacteria with everyone around us all the time (even if we are not kissing them). Even if that's not a good reason to not brush, remember that you save water if you don't.
@Dunkle0steus9 жыл бұрын
I'm not going to rant about what you've just said. It is wrong though, and you should do more research. I don't want to get into an argument here. Give me some acclaimed, peer-reviewed studies that link the bacteria in your mouth to the bacteria in your gut and that there is such a thing as "good" mouth bacteria and I will believe you. Humans have different oral bacteria than many animals because we eat more sugars and carbs (food for the bacteria) in the modern day than our bodies are designed for. This is why brushing our teeth is helpful. Animals such as dogs do not have the same high-sugar diet that we do, but they do eat dog food and they eat their own poop, lick their own genitals and can get tooth decay. Ask any veterinarian about canine oral health. I hope you'll take the time to consider what I'm saying instead of simply declaring me wrong. I'm willing to have a proper discussion and respect your right to defend your opinion if you'll show me the same courtesy.

You also have to know that dogs often can smell your emotions because your body emits certain smells that they can pick up when something is wrong (hence veterinary trips are worse than they are when YOU are nervous and made a big deal about the trip, they sense that tension and worry and act like something will be wrong and are on high alert and panic) They also sense when you are happy, sad, etc.... That is why dogs are so good for emotional help, detecting seizures, when someone is undergoing anaphylactic shock from an allergy, PTSD, and more. How do I know, own several dogs and worked in a veterinary clinic for many years.

I think a lot of recognition is with the first sound. Like you said "ball" and "bone," both beginning with /b/. My dog knows our neighbor's dog's name, "Skeeter." Except that anytime you say any word starting with the /sk/ sound, he'll act the same lol

@It'sOkayToBeSmart I tried an experiment for myself that you might find interesting. I was staying with a host family in Germany and a cousin of the family came over one day and brought her dog. After the dog was used to me (a new person) I asked her in a very energetic way "Do you want to go for a walk?!?" (in English). The dog didn't respond at all. Then I asked "Willst du spazieren?!?" (roughly the same question with the same inflection but in German) and the dog got very excited and ran to the front door. Clearly it wasn't just the inflection or excitement of my voice, there was at least some meaning behind what was said.

My dog, Scooter, is very smart, to the point where he is capable of thinking about whether or not he wants to listen to us when we tell him to do things. For example, when I ask him "Do you want to go for a walk?" He pauses for a minute, and I can see the little wheels turning in his head as he tries to figure out whether this is a trick of some kind.

So my grandfather and my ancestors were nomads so naturally they had to have dogs to protect the herd and themselves at night from wolves, jackals and bandits and all sorts of animals since they used to live secluded lives in the mountains of Balochistan. My grandfather used to tell us that they could tell from the bark of the dogs whether it was a wolf or a bandit or another animal that had entered the territory. Their relationship with their dogs must have been amazing.

I exchange facial expressions with my cat. We can stare at each other for a long time. I blink slowly, then he blinks back once and does not blink again. And although he's taken to tossing his bowl out of its stand when he wants more food, he responds in the same curt 'mrrow' that I give him when I ask him if he's hungry. He knows this is our term for 'food'. Being the particular half-wild breed that he is, he meows loudly when he wants to go outside and he never wants to go back in, but when I look at him quickly and catch his attention, he licks his nose to which I lick my lips, and he immediately drops what he is doing and heads down stairs, he asked 'outside' I said 'why not? Lead the way!' And I can stand at the top of the stairs with him at the bottom. He will flick his left ear which means 'can I come?' And if I flare my nostrils which means 'no, not yet' and he will wait for as long as I want(assuming he's feeling cooperative, he is a cat after all) Then I raise my left eyebrow: 'the time is now.' And he shoots up the stairs like he's heard a gun shot... He proceeds to claw the carpet on the last step. I try to see if dogs will respond to such minute cues but most don't have the patience or capacity. I have known two very intelligent older dogs however who picked up these cues almost immediately. And with long term training I taught my friends' poodle-westie mix to shake a strangers hand, only on non verbal command. I push my hair behind my ear which means 'don't be rude, say hello!' And he shakes their hand. It looks like he does it on his own and no matter how long I don't see him, he always remembers. Animals are amazing aren't they? Sadly though, the cat will never yawn back to me.
