What would be the point of a soul sleeping. Sleep is to refresh the 'body'. It is to help it rest from it's endeavours during the day. When we die the body is laid to rest until the resurrection unto Life if you are a child of God, but the soul is in the presence of it's Lord, which is very far better.

"The body without the spirit is dead" James 2:26 "So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’ “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’ “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’ “ ‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’ ”” Luke 16:19-31 NIV bible.com/bible/111/luk.16.19-31.NIV

What the pastor really should have said was I don’t know but I will give you my two since the pastor did not do a good job on answering the question so hear me out and read this comment in full. The short answer to this profound question that has confounded Man since ancient times is that Lazarus went where he was called from. I am not going to repeat what Jesus said about Lazarus when he died, but let it suffice that Lazarus was indeed dead dead. He was dead for 4 days before Jesus arrived at the grave site. Note also that Jesus went to call him from the grave, where he was. There are generally two schools of thought on what happens when a person dies. The first one embraced by the majority, is that the righteous dead go to paradise (heaven). The second which I believe is derived from the bible, and embraced by a few, is that all the dead (good and bad) sleep in their graves until the resurrection day. I will address the most popular first. Applying a bit of logic helps a great deal as well here. Imagine you are Lazarus and you have died. You are whisked to heaven and being a righteous man are admitted straight away into paradise. You are starting to really get into the grove when suddenly after 4 days of heavenly joy you are whisked back to this miserable earth to toil again. This is exactly what it would have meant if we believe that the dead go to heaven or hell when they die. I think we can all recognize how ridiculous this scenario is. The other view which in my opinion is derived from the bible, is that Lazarus after his death did not go anywhere. He was returned to the dust from which he came from as instructed by God in Gen 3:17. Jesus being the Creator was able to reverse the process of death and His breath reunited with the body and Lazarus became a living soul again. His consciousness, feeling and emotions all returned. We do not see the relatives running away that they have seen a ghost, but they embrace him and welcome him back. When Lazarus walked out of the grave, everyone should have crowded around Lazarus and asked him what the other side was like. It really would have made the headlines and what headlines they would have been. But instead what do we hear from Lazarus after his resurrection? Nothing, absolutely nothing. Why? Because there was nothing to tell. Time, feelings and all consciousness stopped. Even more interesting is the absence of questions from the onlookers! Why? Because their belief was typified in the answer given by Martha:“I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. 26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?” She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.” Some people use the argument we are present with the lord I think we are but that does not disprove soul sleeping I will explain further, so you die and your soul goes to the lord but who is to say your soul is not sleeping your soul could be sleeping in the presence of the lord while time passes then the resurrection happens and you are judged and when your soul is a sleep it will feel like it was just a second for you but for everyone else it was thousands of years or centuries this is because if your soul is out of space and time you would have no concept of time so a second for you is like centuries for everyone else if that makes sense.

@@victory4172 just to let you know I am a Christian so do not get the wrong idea. I believe the soul is present with the lord but I think it is unconscious or if it’s not unconscious I think it is in some other state rather than our version of consciousness down here on earth. 2: Looking at it from a logical standpoint helps a great deal as well here. Not that you should believe in a eternal torment either. Also I’m pretty sure everyone would be asking Lazarus what the after life was like but guess what we hear 👂 nothing this because Lazarus has no recollection of the afterlife and if he did there would be news about it and what news it would be but instead there is no news of it historically speaking so what makes you think he went to heaven immediately based off those events and if you disagree give me a Bible verse in which you disagree on so I can find the correct counter argument.

@Daisy Fields The word translated as soul, really means living being. Therefore Genesis does not read and God breathed in his nostrils and gave him a soul. It says Adam became a soul. Soul just means living. So Adam became a living being. Your "soul"can't go anywhere, it is not an entity. But it is the life-force that return to God. Life doesn't just fizzle out... and dissipates in the air, according to the Bible. That life force remains with God, he reclaims it.
@user-os3qs8fp6p3 жыл бұрын
@Daisy Fields I am afraid you do not know your Bible. Firstly, the Father is not the Creator, Jesus is. John 1:1-4 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. Jesus is the Word. He is the one who became flesh. Secondly, you need to go back to the source documents as close as you can, and that means at least read the Hebrew and the Greek (New Testament). In th old Bible translations, the "breath of life" account was incorrectly translated to soul. But even so, the verse does not say and man RECEIVED A SOUL, it says man became a living soul. The correct translation from the Hebrew is MAN BECAME A LIVING BEING. So man did not reveive a soul. Neither did the Creator blow a spirit entity into man - the "breath of life" - in other words the gift of life was thus granted. Until today, scientists cannot tell you what life is, how it comes about and cannot replicate it. Being a triune human entity is a heresy, people trying to model themselves into the triune God. Neither did Jesus' "spirit" turn into a seperate entity as part of Him being fully human (also). On the cross, He said: "Father into your hands I commit my spirit". He told the one thief, "verily I say to you today, that you will be in paradise with me." Translators put the comma in the wrong place - as Hebrew or the other languages DO NOT USE punctuation marks, so verses have to be interpreted. Jesus DID NOT go to paradise that night, he went to Hades (death) Furthermore we know Jesus was not partly in heaven as he said in John 20:17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” So spirit is never used as a separate entity, except for the HOLY SPIRIT. Soul & Spirit are not literal things, but describe a nature or method, such as worship Him in "spirit and in truth". If you worship in spirit, it is not about falling down before God or saying prayers out loud (though it can be part of worship), but it is the non-carnal, non worldly way of holy worship.
@user-os3qs8fp6p3 жыл бұрын
@Daisy Fields Perhaps you & I are moving towards mutual understanding. But I didn't try to answer you on each point - I put forth the explanation of what the Bible says. This is not from my own understanding, but in learning from great teachers, preachers and theologians. The sou; though, does not live on after death. You are right in saying there is a difference between soul and body, but you are still making entities out of them, which is not what the words mean. Soul literally means LIVING BEING. Your body doesn't go in the ground & become dust while the soul suddenly becomes an immortal entity as it survives. It doesn't!!! The soul, this living being that I am, dies. And then I AM NO MORE, BUT! But for the fact that the portion of life, the portion of my existence being part of God's plan - that life that we do not understand how God gives it, that part goes back to God. So the gift of life He granted me, goes back to just being part of Him and not a separate entity, UNITIL THE RESURRECTION. You seem to agree that there is no consciousness after death, there are many Bible verses for that. As for your first point, the Father was not speaking to Jesus (the Word). The Bible never contradicts itself, and when the Bible is very specific, we have to accept only what is written. John 1:1-4 already says everything was made for him, and without him, nothing was made. So you cannot turn around and suddenly throw the Father in there. I don't know where you get the notion that there is no triune God - you already speak about the Father & Son? The trinity is the Father, Son (the Word) & Holy Spirit. The Genesis account refers to discussions the Godhead had with the Counsel. The counsel is mentioned several times, have a look at Psalm 82. By far not the only place. The first family the Godhead created, is one of a more spiritual nature, who exist in many more dimensions than we do. There was a revolt there. There also was a class of gods, sons of God, who formed an elite group. To a number of these, all the people at Babel were divided, for them to be guardians over. God has this discussion, saying "here's an idea, let's make man..." But then the Bible does NOT read then THEY CREATED! No! It reads GOD CREATED! My last comment about your reply, is the bit of spirit passed down from Adam... Absolutely not true. There is no basis in the Bible for that. God grants that very same life he gave Adam, to each and everyone of us in the womb. There are Bible verses about that. You are totally misinterpreting spirit. It is not a piece of godliness. The closest I can come to explain is that God has designed us to have a "special inner chamber" for the Holy Spirit - so we have a direct connection to the Godhead through the indwelt Spirit. But this only comes into play when you are reborn. Then it is activated - it is not some part of a characteristic God blew into Adam.

@Daisy Fields I hear what you say about your point of view. Mine remains that the living body/soul dies. For a while, it is the end of it. What you call spirit, I call life force. No one but God can grant life. A sperm & ovum can join, but unless God grants life to it, it will be expelled. Have you ever wondered what life really is? It is a great mystery. Kind of a magical ingredient. Not only does its presence make a sentient being (at least in man) but it contains the "essence" the core being, the blueprint if you will, that for a while returns to God. Adam & Eve had to be expelled, had to be tempted first. When they failed, they couldn't in their fallen state receive immortality. Can you imagine that!! Jesus who ministered in sheol didn't minister to spirits, but to the sons (not capital letter) of God - the ones who came down to earth and took human women that bore them the Nephilim children; and taught mankind skills to better destroy themselves with, like warfare and abortion. God punished the world/people who became wicked all the time, especially with what the sons of God taught and the wickedness of the Nephilim, by sending the flood in Noah's days. It did not get completely rid of the Nephilim and there is text for that, too. If you read Book of the Watchers and other material, it is mentioned that the sons of God removed some of the Nephilim from the earth in vessels in the sky. Yet in Canaan the people were so big, the Israelites were like "grasshoppers" compared to them & the last giant mentioned is Goliath. We find what happened to the sons of God in 1 Peter 3:18-20 “For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, in order that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison, who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water.” Yeshua means "Salvation". So throughout the Bible Yeshua is mentioned countless times. The whole book is about Him! I battled for 10 years to try & understand who He is. A begotten son, is a son born. The genealogies all read, this one begat that one, etc. So he is a born son. But how? Then he cannot be a part of the triune if he is born. Then He is human or created, but He is NOT. He is God. If not God, the whole Bible is a lie and Yeshua was the biggest charlatan, cheat and conman that ever lived. He declared Himself to be God (before Abraham was, I am). He said in John 5:39-40 King James Version 39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. 40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. How can He grant life if not God? Then he deserved to die and the Sanhedrin had every right to have him crucified. So if He is both the begotten Son and the Word who created, how does that fit together? In Psalm 2:7 we find the answer: Psalms 2:7 NIV I will proclaim the LORD’s decree: He said to me, “You are my son; today I have become your father. Psalms 2:7 NCV Now I will tell you what the LORD has declared: He said to me, “You are my son. Today I have become your father. This was fulfilled when (Luke 3:21-22 ESV) Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” It refers to Yeshua in His material form, as the Perfect Man. So He is both the Word and the Son. I prefer Triune I don't like the word Trinity, as it makes it sound like a pantheon of Gods. They are distinctly different in their functions and character traits. Another man whom I love listening to, especially for clarity on Jewish meaning and intent. It is Messianic rabbi Zev Porat. His channel is Messiah of Israel ministries. They are based in Israel. He comes from the Sanhedrin, staunch, upper class rabbinic background. His parents denounced him and kicked him out when he was born again. Whatever I've heard him say, has always been strictly scriptural. I don't think you can accept part of the Bible, and other parts not. The parts that don't seem to fit, just means you need to search some more

Satan's first lie was "thou shall not surely die"... The lie continues to be perpetuated. The dead "know nothing" Ecc 9:5. Death is as a sleep. The soul is mortal until Jesus' return. When Cain slew Able and God confronted him, he didn't say to Cain, "Hey, Able just showed up at the Pearly gates. What'd you do to him?" No, God said "his blood crieth from the ground." Jesus after he was resurrected and met Mary said He hadn't ascended to His Father yet which means Jesus had remained in the grave body and all and not ascended to heaven. Bible says "David", who was loved by God still sleeps with his fathers. To die and be with Christ means to be dead in Christ and awaiting the glorious resurrection... Nothing wrong with that. It'll be like a twinkling of an eye for the believer who dies in Christ from this world to heaven even though thousands of years may have past by. Don't get caught up in Spiritualism. @@awokenxtwiistx9892 I see this a lot. You're misquoting 2 Corinthians 5:8. It does not say... (“to be absent from the body is to be present with the lord”). People misquote it like this all the time. In 2 Corinthians 5:8, Paul is simply saying he would (RATHER) be with the Lord... 2 Corinthians 5:8 (KJV) we are confident, I say, and willing (RATHER) to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. Paul was well aware that Jesus referred to death as sleep... John 11:11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. 12: Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. 13: Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. 14: Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. Sani Yahuza is actually telling you the truth. Have you ever thought about the fact that out of all the resurrections in the bible, not one person ever said anything about what they saw while they were dead? There's a simple answer to this question. None of them saw or experienced anything. Here's why... Ecclesiastes 9:5 (KJV) For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Out of all the people who died and were resurrected, not one of them said anything about what they experienced after they died. Why do you think that is? It's because Ecclesiastes 9:5 is actually telling the truth. ("For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing"). Q: How much do you know, if you don't know anything? A: Nothing! Just like all of the people who died and were resurrected. They didn't know anything. Therefore, they couldn't share what they experienced after they died. If what I'm saying is not true, show me one verse in the bible where someone was dead, then resurrected, and then explained what they saw while they were dead. You won't find any verse like this in the entire bible. That's because the dead don't know anything. With the exception of a small select group of people who have already been resurrected, everyone else who is dead is waiting to be resurrected.

Pastor John starts out good, indicating the source of the "immortal soul" is the Greeks. But then he teaches exactly that. We have grieving people asking the question and being given the same lie that the serpent told to Eve in the garden, not realizing that the truth is every bit as comforting. In the parable "The picture Jesus paints is one of a conscious life ... beyond death". What you missed is that not only is it beyond death, it is a picture of the kingdom of God beyond resurrection. We know this because Lazarus was carried by angels to Abraham's bosom. When Christ returns, "he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds". (Matt 24:31) God alone has immortality. Please stay within the bounds of scripture if you wish to teach truth that is Biblical.

In the original text, there was no punctuation. Some translators have put it in that passage incorrectly. If Jesus said “truly I tell you (comma) today you will be with Me...” then He was a liar and is of no use to humanity. Because as Jeff Jones showed above, He had NOT yet ascended. We also know that while He was dead, He was preaching to the spirits in chains. So He did NOT go to Paradise that day. Now, read the passage correctly; “Truly I tell you today (comma) you will be with me....” He was assuring the thief that he would join Jesus in paradise, but He wasn’t claiming it would be that day. He’s saying “I am making this promise to you right now (Today) so you can know you WILL join Me in Paradise. But He wasn’t claiming it would happen that day!

At Creed you argue that a comma is misleading in that verse as it refers to immediate occupancy in heaven but then you turn around and use a comma to try and prove your point that there is no immediate occupancy in heaven. As far as Him not yet ascending to the father; He told Mary not to cling to Him (clinging to His body) therefore we can assume He was talking about His physical and glorified body not yet ascending into Heaven.

Why do Christians fall for "experts" like Pastor John using passages like those in Philippians 1, and II Corinthians 5 to teach a conscious state after death? (Both passages are referring to the resurrection.) It is because most church folk rarely read their Bible and they study it less often than that. They don't know, for example, what Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, outside of Jesus, said: _"There is hope, however, for anyone who is among the living; for even a live dog is better than a dead lion. For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing."_ (Ecclesiastes 9: 4-5, BSB)

But what about those that die in un-repented sin and will ultimately go to hell? Shouldn't they first stand before Him and be judged then go to hell? So after they die will they be judged right then? I thought the bible said they must first be told why?(judged) Also if their souls are already being tormented for thousands of years, why bother with judgement day? To me , as for my having been born again (saved), it is not that big of a deal due to the fact that if i die and just become unconscious (sleep) I will merely be unaware of it as I sleep and await the return of Christ and my resurrection. (i will have no recollection of time) But for the sinners that die w/o repentance? Well that is a different story! Like i said, what's the need for judgement day? I don't think I will be judged. My name IS in the Lambs book of Life! The blood of Christ is on over my door! He has forgiven me ALL my sins!(past,present,future-- ALL!) The answer is so simple. No one seems to think it through. Question: Does your consciousness of soul stop when you sleep? Only in one way. You stop being body conscious. So? When your soul leaves the body? We "sleep" because we stop being body conscious. Does not the Bible teach that the Lord spoke to various people in their dreams and showed them things pertaining to reality? Thus... we will enter a dream like state. Yet, we as our soul can have full contact with the Lord, receiving what he desires us to know and to see. Its not complicated. It really is not. When we sleep we stop being body conscious. We do not lose consciousness of being who we are when we dream.

In the case of the rich man and Lazarus, if the story is not a parable, then there are some critical questions to be answered. 1. Can the dead speak, as was the case with the rich man who called out to Abraham? 2. Will the righteous continue to experience the suffering of their loved ones who may be in hell? What kind of eternal happiness will that bring for the righteous? 3. If it is literal, do all the righteous fit in Abraham's bosom? Remember, we are assuming that the story is literal and not a parable. 4. Will those in heaven communicate with those in hell?

All I hear is assumptions made from the word of Paul, when Jesus Himself never taught that the dead goes straight to heaven or hell. The immortality of a soul is a foreign concept for the Jews. The parable of Lazarus and the rich man is Jesus' way of teaching the Jews a lesson about salvation. The Jews thought that because they were descendants of Abraham, they are automatically confirmed to be in the Kingdom of God. All the while, they hoarded the knowledge of God, the Scriptures, all to themselves and cared not for the suffering Gentiles. To be at Abraham's bosom means heaven for the Jews while Hades is a concept of hell for the Gentiles. So Jesus brilliantly switched the ending of both characters (Lazarus represents the Gentiles, who are poor in the knowledge of God; the rich man represents the Jews). It is obviously a parable, because if it was a literal event, it contradicts the teachings of the Scriptures (in Jesus' time, it's the Old Testament). The dead does not communicate with each other. Death is an unconscious state. Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 (UKJV) For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun. Psalms 88:10 (UKJV) Will you show wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise and praise you? Selah. Psalms 146:3-4 (UKJV) Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help. His breath goes forth, he returns to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. Psalms 115:17 (UKJV) The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence. With that being said, I still think Paul is right. To be absent from the body, is to be with the Lord. When you sleep, you lose track of time. Hours pass in what seems like a blink of an eye. Our next conscious thought after death is hearing Jesus calling and seeing Him in all His glory, and what a wondrous thing it will be!

“The short answer to this profound question that has confounded Man since ancient times is that Lazarus went where he was called from.

Not Permitted To Talk While there is no record of any of those who were resuscitated as relating their experiences in the next world, this does not mean they were unconscious. Paul, for example, clearly said that he was not permitted to relate his experience of the time he was in the presence of God. [Paul] was caught up into Paradise and heard things that are not to be told, that no mortal is permitted to repeat (2 Corinthians 12:4). Moreover this is an argument from silence. We do not know that Lazarus, or some of the other people who were resuscitated, did not ever talk about their experiences. All we know is that there experience was not recorded. This does not mean they had nothing to talk about.

Its now empty since Jesus took them all to heaven,what is in there now is the hell and those sinners and sinners to come.In revelation 20:13-14 when Jesus reign for 1000 years on earth, He will execute the final judgement, the death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them, and death and hell were cast into the LAKE OF FIRE In Jesus resurrection (Matt.27:52-53) graves were opened and many bodies of saints which slept arose and came out of the graves, why? Also in 1 Thess. 4:15-18 “For this we say unto you by the word of the LORD,that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shal not prevent them which are asleep v.16- For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God,and the dead in Christ shall rise first: v.17-Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air, and so shall we ever with the Lord. V18-Wherefore comfort one another with these words. Why the dead bodies of the saints in the grave came out? Philippians 3:21 “Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.” King James Version (KJV)

Thank you for atleast being more fair to the importance of the necessity and teaching of the bodily resurrection in scripture. Often this is neglected as well as leaving open the comment section. Often those wishing to "debunk" soul sleep dont allow comments. I guess they know that some of us are very passionate about this truth. Our only hope is Jesus coming to restore life to those who have fallen asleep in Him. Paul speaks of, and contrasts, his present body with the body he recieves when he sees Christ. Which seems to be said that this occurs at His appearing. On the last day. Like When Mary soeaks to Jesus about her dead brother. He does not correct her but affirms that His presence is what necessitates bringing life. Where was Lazarus but the grave with our Lord on earth at that time?

What the pastor should had said was I don’t know but I agree with you read my comment in full.

The closest to soul sleep is when we’re put under and told to count down from 100. The next thing we know, we’re in the ICU recovering from our serious operation. The 2 hours spent under the scalpel seemed like a couple of minutes.

In 2 Corinthians 5, I don’t think Apostle Paul was trying to teach that a believer would be immediately in the lords' presence at the point of death. Here is my reasoning as follows: - The entire context Is found in verse 1, Paul talks of an earthly tent/house, I think it is pretty safe to assume he means the earthly body. If this earthly body is torn down/dies, then we have a building/new body made without hands in the heavens. Paul then goes on to talk about groaning in this present earthly body and longing to be clothed with our heavenly body, inasmuch, that if we put it on, we will not be found naked/unclothed. My reasoning here is, that being found naked or unclothed, is in relation to being torn down, [ie] it’s speaking metaphorically of death. Paul then follows in verse 8 with the statement:- “but we are of good courage and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord” I m o, the above verse cannot be speaking of being with Christ immediately at the point of death, because in this context, the believer would have to receive his new immortalised body at that same point, so as to not be found unclothed or naked in the lords' presence, this then leaves the problem of what body is there for the immortal soul/spirit to put on at the resurrection if they have already received it in the heavens at the point of death. Therefore, I can only conclude, that Paul meant he would rather be with Christ in his Immortalised resurrected body than be present in his suffering earthly body, yet the position between the two states of being [ie] being unclothed/dead, was very undesirable. In Philippians 1: 21, Paul said that for him to die is gain; although death was an undesirable state in Paul’s mind. Christ explains a seed first has to die before it brings forth its fruit and Paul understood this, that’s why he taught the natural man comes “before” the spiritual man [ie] the natural man has to die “before” the spiritual man is resurrected 1 Corinth 15:46. Philippians 1:23 [a]: - “But I am hard-pressed from both directions” Paul is hard pressed between what’s more desirable, staying alive for Christ or the state of being dead/sleeping until Christ returns 1 Thess 4:16. Yet, Paul expresses a position even more desirable than both of those: - 1 Philip 23:[b]:- “having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better” I believe the “departing” and being with the Lord is about being caught away “a k a” the rapture. 1 Corinth 15:51 - 55 + 1 Thess 4:17. I believe it was this that Paul desired more than staying alive for Christ in his present earthly body, or being in a state of death/sleep until Christ’s coming [ie] the catching away would solve all dilemmas. Peace

The verses that people use to try to say souls sleep, are all referring to the physical body. The spirit and soul never sleeps, it doesn't need to, it's eternal. Sleep is for physical bodies. There are several scriptures that prove the soul and spirit remain awake and alive. *Acts 7:59* _"And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, _*_receive my spirit."_* *Luke 23:39-43* _"And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, _*_Today shalt thou be with me in paradise."_* *Luke 16:22-24* _“And it came to pass, that _*_the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom:_*_ the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.”_ As you can see, the spirit and souls of both the sinner and the righteous went somewhere fully awake after their death, one to hell and one to Abraham's bosom (paradise).

There is not one clear passage in the bible that says we go straight to heaven or hell. It says we sleep. The bible is very clear that death is a sleep. Psalm 115:17 "The dead do not praise the Lord, nor do any who go down into silence."

Frankly Frank but JESUS did say, when hanging on the cross, "today you will be in paradise with ME" Or where did Enoch or Elijah go when the LORD took them? Philip saw the heaven open up before he died. I'm not saying that you're wrong it's just that i have a lot of questions on this topic. Sometimes i think we'll be with GOD immediately when we die but then i think about Lazarus or all the other people that died and came back to life. It would be unfair for them to come back to this life when they're with CHRIST.

Paulus Van Slooten thanks for the comment. When Jesus said today you will be with me in Paradise he did not mean that very day as he was himself in the grave for 3 days. So he did not mean that very day he and the thief would be in Paradise together.

Frankly Frank thank you for your answer. I did hear one time that maybe the comma wasn't put in the right place in that sentence. That maybe it was lik this "I say to you today, you will be with me in paradise" But that still leaves the question about Enoch and Elijah😅 It doesn't matter though. If you trust in the LORD with all your might than it doesn't matter if you go to sleep first or if you'll be with HIM immediately. Have a nice day Frank

Then she looked at each one of us, my sister, my brother, and me, and said "I love you and I will miss you, but I will see you soon. Then she quite peacefully left this world. We are all believers; Jesus is the Son of God who died for our sins and rose from the dead, with a promise that all who trust in Jesus will be raised to be like Him!!!

@@jordanlindo9703 Clearly not a Greek metaphor, given that fact that it mentions the "Lord". This is completely antithetical to Greek philosophy. Paul unambiguously qualifies his own statement in the same sentence: To be absent in the body=present with the Lord. This is validated in the original koine Greek. Why else would Paul prefer to die? Paul, being a Christian, would have no desire to compromise solid doctrine with Greek philosophy. He was extremely critical of foolish, vain philosophies, and commanded us to keep away from them. I have never come across any scholarship that states that Paul's verse was a Greek metaphor with the meaning that you've implied.

Yet they know that they, as soul-beings, can communicate with "O Sovereign Lord, holy and true.." These souls "under the altar" knew they were human-beings "how long before you judge and avenge our BLOOD?".
