Yeah, let’s explore more moss and more ways we might keep it growing. I’ll be starting my first riparium in the next couple of weeks as well as a mini-terrarium.

I have been growing a few different terrestrial mosses immersed both in aquarium and in a jar on the window to add to the aquarium later. They tend to grow tall and lanky but depends on the species of moss

Hey Danny, I've read conflicting recommendation about leaving the dirt with it versus rinsing it as much as possible, do you have any thoughts on the matter?
@GlassBoxHero
@GlassBoxHero 3 жыл бұрын
@@VinylUnboxings clean most of the dirt off, leave some of it there for the roots, then float the moss on top of the tank for a few days until it naturally sinks, and it should transition fairly well. It would do even better if you had CO2 running.

The moss probably died on the wood because the lighting was too high. Most of the terrestrial moss I find grows well on perpetually damp soil (i.e. near streams) in the shade of tall trees, and generally stops growing where the shade cuts off. It might do better in a low-light paludarium.

It doesn't work if you try to acclimate it. It just drowns the area that's the wettest, and then the death spreads upward.

It depends on the type of moss that you put in the aquarium, The temperature and ammount of light, I have used terrestral moss in my aquariums before and its been doing really well now for around 5 months.

I would like to share my progress here: I've been trying different types of mosses and the one that had a perfect success fully submerged after being emerged for weeks, was the Pilea Microphylla, aka Angeloweed, Artillery Plant, Joypowder plant and/or Brilhantina Moss. My mosses are absolutely huge and I don't use any CO2 or liquid fertilizers, medium light but I do use natural potting soil with aqua soil, topped with Pure-Off white Aquarium Sand.

Yes! Definitely do the moss experiment! I was at Roaring River Fish Hatchery yesterday and noticed that there was the same moss growing in the water submerged as the moss that was above water on the cliff. They both looked like they were doing pretty well. I swear it was the same moss! I also learned recently that moss really likes acidic environments. Don’t know if that helps at all. Good luck!

A few months ago on a trip home to Kentucky and in the woods near the Creek I found an amazing amount of lush terrestrial Moss.. I brought it home I watched a few videos but I really didn't find away to keep it growing and I lost it all..so this is a subject I'm definitely interested to learn more about.. So my answer is yes on trying a CO2 and Moss experiment..👍 your setup still looks amazing!! And all the fish look like they're doing well... Thanks for sharing! 🙏🌿🐟🌱♥️

Thats really nice. I pulled some moss off the side of a canal lock its usually submerged under water for the most part but locks been empty for a few days and its been out of water as this stretch of canal isn't very busy but its still really wet. Interested to see if it lives ive wedged it in the holes on a dragon rock. I know some plants struggle to adjust from land to water some don't transit some die off and then regrow as its transactioning to absorbing CO² from its roots rather than leaves as on land but this moss is used to being submerged so im hoping it takes.

I believe it’s one of those moss by moss basis situation cause from what I hear, most are successful. Some are harder to acclimate than others though. But once you get it going, it can keep going. That being said; there’s plenty that won’t work. I think you’re on the right track by testing different species & seeing what works & wat doesn’t. You’re certainly the right man for this job…😏

If you find terrestrial moss that is growing submerged in the wild and transplant it that will work. It had to do with the moss having grown to get its co2 from roots or air. Underwater already gets it from roots and an established tank will have that ready for it. Thats what I did. It worked!

A few years ago someone did this experiment with terrestrial moss I can't find it though. It seemed to do well for a time then died. Many plants will survive flooding but depending on their DNA they won't survive underwater for long. To do the experiment you are going to need to know the sp of the moss and the climatic conditions it grows in.

Go in the forrest, find all kind of moss, , get some java moss, and what els you can find, the more the better. Blend it all with a little water. Add a little aquarium soil, so you get a thick mass. Take a wood root from your aquarium , and put the moss mass on it, all over. Put the wood root in a plastic bag, under a light, and in some good heat, 24 degree cencius. After 3 weeks, where you keep it moist , add it to a tank with water. The moss that lives best under water, will take over and the moss that will die, will just die.
