I think they both sound good. Maybe the unpainted one was a little louder. But the paint job is so beautiful it's probably worth the slight change in sound.

On inexpensive ukes like these I wouldn't see any problem in painting. As you say, a good paint job overrides any very minor change in sound. No on would ever notice. Thanks. Rich

Thank you so much for this video. I recently bought my first and rather dull looking Ukulele. It was cheap being under £30 and I bought it to find out if I can play at all. My little ukulele is the very first musical instrument I have ever really tried out and I really enjoy playing it. I was thinking of buying a more colourful one, but couldn't find what I was after, so I got the idea that I just paint my little ukulele, painting being another hobby of mine, that won't be too difficult. Wasn't sure if that is advisable and looked around and found your video. Thank you so much for that. I now go and find out what type of paint is advised. By the way, I love your painted ukulele. Looks great.

They one without paint is slightly louder, adding an extra hole for the sound(probably on the front bottom corner) could boost the sound a bit.

does it make a difference if i paint the sides and back of my uke, instead of painting the face of it?

I wouldn't see how that would change things at all. I've got one ukulele painted all over and another painted just on the top. I would paint it to suit me and suggest you paint yours to suit you. Enjoy!

I think they both sound great and the painted one is so beautiful! Thank you for sharing this! I bet if you posted a video only letting people hear the sounds, you'd get different opinions. I think there are some people out there that have kind of been programmed to believe what they believe! This does not bode well for the problem we have with deforestation and for struggling artists. Everyone is currently wanting that beautiful WOOD look. Well, folks, pretty soon, that beautful wood is going to be gone.

I like bamboo as a ukulele wood for the reasons you mention. I don't like koa because I don't like the idea of cutting down trees in Hawaii. 😊😊
@tmb9126 Жыл бұрын
@@richdavis4007 I like those bamboo Ukes too! They are awesome! And boy, I think a lot of people would be surprised if they looked up what wood their Uke is made of and found it on the endangered list. There are so many better options, like wood from farmed trees and of course, bamboo.
@richdavis4007 Жыл бұрын
I support what you are saying completely. People who want wood that is rare and expensive are misguided.

@@richdavis4007 By the way Rich, maybe I missed it, but did you paint that Ukulele? If not, who did? It is so beautiful! Such a great job! I am a painter and have started selling painted Ukes and Uke bags. My last one was a bamboo uke and the one before that was a home made cigar box. Would you mind if I shared with you here or in private message? Let me know. Thanks. Oh, and thank you for posting this video. It's people like you that help us artists out! So many wait until the artist is dead - seriously, I hear people in the forums saying things like "I just love finding these vintage painted Ukes." But then they wont buy from an artist that is currently still living. LOL In fact, if you don't mind, Rich, I'd like to post this video of yours on my art site.

Good morning, Rich. A rainy day here in Northern CA. I have discovered same model ukes from the same manufacturer can sound different and weigh as much as three ounces different. Not surprising those two ukes sound different regardless of paint versus no paint. I suspect a heavy coat of paint of varnish would tend to mute the volume of a uke, and glossy ukes like the Oscar Schmidt OU5 and Kalas I have played do not have great volume even though they play and sound great. Rick
@richdavis40074 жыл бұрын
I agree glossy ukes aren't as loud though I've wondered if part of that isn't that we can't feel the sound with our hands on the uke as well as with non gloss ones. No doubt heavy coat of paint or varnish would quiet the uke. I've been trying to get a decent recording (while singing) with a banjo uke and sometimes quieter is better. Banjo uke is louder by far than resonator.

@@richdavis4007 ... Any weight, particularly added to the top, will stifle the higher pitched sounds. Spruce, for example, is much lighter then, say, mahogany therefore the sound is brighter. It's also a good idea to use the hardest (and thinnest and therefore lighter) varnish possible which will help keep the sound bright. Painting a uke with, say, acrylic paint (which is rubbery) wont do the sound or volume any good. At most I can see adding a few flowers, or whatever, here and there, but painting the entire surface doesn't seem to me to be a great idea. Anyway, I've considered adding some stickers, and car pin-stripe'ing, here and there, to add to the looks of a uke.
