You are right. Painting ukulele covers the wood pore, reduces vibration and changes tonal quality a lot. Specially, painting the tone wood (face of ukulele) changes the sound entirely. You can light paint only if you have high quality carbon fiber ukuleles (not the cheap plastic toy like ones). Even I don’t like high gloss finish wood ukuleles because of additional painting, the mat finish are the best since they have open pores. I have several ukuleles, only high gloss finish I have is a super expensive all solid Koa wood Koaloha ($2000) where gloss finish really don’t impact tone much. All others I have are of mat finish or with onboard trans acoustics.

Painting the ukulele makes no discernable sound difference if you use acrylic paint. I have been running experiments on this and studying this matter with regards to resonance and sustain and damping and will be posting a site on this matter. The sound board works in conjunction with the back and the sides. If you think painting a Ukulele mutes the sound, then you can also say your sound is already muted by pressing your uke up against your chest of gut while you play. Claiming this falsity only creates hard times for your fellow artists. Now, am I saying take a beautifully expensive tonewood and completely cover it up? No. But I am saying there is a place for all of us under the sun, so be careful about the news you spread if you're not 100% certain or if that news is not 100% accurate, because you could be hurting the livelihood of people.
