Shure states that all their dynamic mics and wireless receivers are immune to phantom power. That’s good, because they often have to share a board with condenser microphones that require phantom power to drive their internal preamps, and cheaper boards don’t have separate phantom power for each channel. Good dynamic mics should have impedance-matching transformers in them, and DC phantom power does penetrate transformers, only AC audio does that.

I have an Alctron Interface and normally only use 48V for my RODE NT1A, but have tested phantom power on both my Shure SM58 & AUDIX OM5 dynamic mics and note a drop in gain and also boosted high frequencies with the 48V, what would be the cause of that when the consensus is there is no effect whatsoever?
@kettnercreative3 жыл бұрын
You should definitely not be seeing a difference in gain or EQ when you add phantom power. I would contact the manufacturer.

Hi! My question is: Does phantom power damage dynamic microphones?
@venugopalpoolakkal82764 жыл бұрын
Hi sir have a small doubt for example when we use a condenser mic we need to switch in the phantom power so when we use a dynamic and a condenser mic together will it cause any issues or is it OK if we use like that Thx sir
@kettnercreative4 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking, this is not an issue at all. I have yet to ever experience an issue with this. The far majority of dynamic microphones are balanced and will remain unaffected by phantom power. The only microphones that will be negatively affected are unbalanced dynamic microphones (very rare), and ribbon microphones (also very uncommon).

Can we use/connect dynamic and condenser microphone together in a mixer? 48v phantom power will damage the dynamic microphones?
@kettnercreative3 жыл бұрын
I have yet to ever damage a dynamic microphone when using phantom power after doing this maybe 10,000 times. Any modern dynamic mic will be able to handle it without being damaged. If you want to go down a rabbit hole, you can google "unbalanced dynamic mic" to learn more about the ones that might be affected.

Thanks for this video. One follow up question so I am clear. I have a Shure SM7B mic (dynamic mic) and a Rode NT1-a (condenser mic) and I use my Focusrite as my audio interface. One requires phathom power (the rode) and the other does not. Will plugging both of them into my audio interface and using the phathom power damage the shure mic? I know you said, that shure is bullet proof, but is it bullett proof for continued use of phantom on. I wasn't clear on this and I am affaird to use them at the same time for my podcast and damage the dynamic mic which I use very often, please clarify. Thanks so much.

@kettnercreative4 жыл бұрын
It depends on the mic. An audio interface will definitely work better for you, but if you're looking for a simple solution, a XLR to USB cable can work. Here's another video where we try it with a dynamic mic: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3TThX6Dja6ChsU

Could have been even simpler. The answer is simply NO.
@raultoichoa15743 жыл бұрын
simply not true. Look at large studio dynamics like the ashton stealth
@kettnercreative3 жыл бұрын
The Ashton Stealth has a built in preamp. When you send 48v to the Ashton Stealth, the power does not go to the microphone, instead it goes to the preamp. You can think of it as a ‘built in cloudlifter’ that you are activating. 48v has no effect on the microphone portion of this device whatsoever. 48v does not improve the sound/tone/quality of this microphone, it just adds more clean gain.
@raultoichoa15743 жыл бұрын
@@kettnercreative except that you have to turn on 48v power on your interface to work this feature of the ashton stealth, or any dynamic mic that requires a cloudlifter so... Idk it sounds like you're being mindlessly pedantic. To say it has "no effect on the microphone portion of this mic whatsoever" is hilarious and anyone who has used it before would tell you that even if its technically true, its practically false.
