I have friends who have planners, but they're not part of the planner community. They don't seem to feel the same struggles with planner peace as the community does because they don't have the same level of interest. They write down appointments, and that's that. I think it's okay to explore other options and embrace the journey of trying different planners. That's part of the hobby. Of course, it does get expensive, but so do other hobbies. Gaming, photography, tinkering... any pastime will add up in price over time.

YES, YES TO ALL OF THIS!!! I started in a standard Midori and was happy for over a year. Then I went down the KZbin rabbit hole of the planner community. I have bought and sold so many journals and planners in the last year; it's ridiculous. Spoiler alert: I am back to where I started in my single Midori and have never been happier.

I realized that I love notebook paper cut down to Franklin Covey Compact (4.25" x 6.75") for my Dailies. My Dailies are simply a To Do List. I use a Dear Lily stencil for the shapes. I love to thumb through pages and pages of filled in lists. I also made my own college ruled notebook paper insert. This way, I have colored notebook paper to use. This is considered decoration for me. I use an A to Z tabs condensed down to only 6 tabs. It is my note/ filing cabinet. It is not a popular trend in the community but I love it and cannot be without it. I also make my own Finance inserts. Soooo, at peace with my own. I use them every week when we do our budgets.

I think I related to every single word you said. I used a Franklin Covey compact planner successfully for YEARS until I found the planner community. Almost from that moment, I have questioned everything that worked for me and had to try ALL the planners. Here I am five or so years later and still not able to use a planner regularly. I purchased FC inserts two weeks ago to try to get back into what worked before and I still can't get into it. However, some things you said have clicked for me. Thanks for posting this video. You may have fixed me! LOL

Hi Sam! I am rewatching most of your videos again. I rewatch them every time I'm having planner unrest, as I call it. I feel like the simplicity you often have in your planners are often what I prefer. At this time, I am destashing nearly all of my planners that aren't bound books. I feel like I'm not using my favorite planners because I get fomo, buy a ton of new items and then feel guilty if I don't use them. So all that to say, your videos are calming and remind me of what I really love my planners. Thank you!

Yes! Just YES.... The opportunity to reflect on myself and my “planning” preferences is what fascinates me about the somewhat constant struggle for planner peace. I genuinely believe that I am happy in a couple of systems and sometimes, the simple (ok, not so simple and usually damn expensive) process of switching is what helps me to check in, take stock and reorganise myself after I lose my “planning” way. I love rings for the flexibility and I love a bound option for the curation of a “book”. I’m happy to admit here that I will keep switching for the sole purpose of making sure that I’m living each minute to the best of my ability and intention.... and if that takes a couple of system changes throughout the year then that’s ok with me! Now.... just to see if you’re reading.... crimson malden.... de-ring or not??? 🤣🤣🤣. Sam, you’re awesome and I will always think of you and your personal rings. Your voice relaxes and “sings” when you talk about them ☺️

I started with a wall calendar and a bunch of sticky notes. After marriage and multiple kids and schedules, I found the bullet journal and have never looked back! That is MY planner peace. :-) I enjoy watching KZbin videos about other kinds of planning styles, but have never been tempted to switch systems... But I do take creative aspects and implement them into my system. Color & stickers make me happy!

I used rings 25 years ago for years. Love it. Then I started drawing and doodling. My TN notebook works best for me now. I have one with 2 books inside, a calendar/ to-do’s and a drawing one. I also have a “Ding Bat” for journaling, scrapbooking and some pictures. I would get very overwhelmed and anxious if I had more. I don’t know how some people do it with more planners than one. To each her own.

Thank you, you have helped immensely with my own indecision!! I've been trying to condense my work & personal planner into one, which I was trying to do in my pocket filofax, but after a few manic days at work I realised I couldn't take all the notes from a meeting I my pocket, as I just couldn't write in it like I can my personal filofax. I also looked back at the diaries I have kept & found that I'd been perfectly happy in a personal filofax for 13 years before I got distracted by the pocket planners on social media. So back to personal for me!! Thank you again.x

You hit the nail on the head here. I concur. I think planner peace is different for everyone and dependent on variables that can change in your life. I think the quicker you can distinguish between your "likes" and your "loves", the quicker you can reach a happy spot in your planning. Tweaking the form to meet your functional needs is also part of the journey. Some of the discoveries I have made about myself over the last few years of trying way too many planners. 1. I want rings so I can print my own inserts, change things up on a whim, and try some creative things. I need to be able to jot down notes or scribbles, then be able to tear it up and toss it or move it around. My solution is Filofax Croc Compact personal rings. I also use it as a wallet and I love that my paper currency fits in without having the bend them. It's also not too bulky or heavy. 2. I have a favorite B6 size spiral planner, Katie Daisy, that's already beautifully decorated, has great paper as well as a few coordinating stickers, so I can get creative even when I don't have much time. It's a great size when I don't need much planner real estate. It also fits in a B6 Chic Sparrow, so that makes it pretty perfect. 3. Sometimes I need a larger space for notes and more room for planning and tracking. My solution is an A5 Chic Sparrow with Hobonichi A5 goodies. I need Tomoe River paper in my life and A5 is a great size when I need more page real estate. I am so grateful that there are so many planner choices these days. I remember planning years ago, when I would find a planner that I loved, never to find one again. The planner selection has come a long way. It will be interesting to see what continues to have a following in the years to come.

Thanks. Your words are very refreshing. I admit I’ve tried many of the fads particularly when starting out and they just didn’t seem to work for me. I think what most communities need is more acceptance of how planning is individual and rather than they flood of plan with me videos there’s more instructions on how to plan, steps, the methodologies etc.

Sam Kelley I’d be interested in an in depth how to video. Most people just touch on the week coming, they don’t go into detail on methodologies, ie GTD method (there are some but very few). It took me two years of fads to realise why I couldn’t get on to of things - I wasn’t using a consistent method

Ahhhh you missed out English mustard I am sooooo offended! Hehe! Ok but seriously, brilliant video, thank you. Planner Peace for me is the acceptance that I like changing certain things up with certain constants being kept, the needs that you talk about. Being at peace with some change rather than feeling bad about it is key for me! I think it takes time to work out your needs, and it also requires a certain amount of experimentation and we need to acknowledge that is ok (as long as we aren't causing any financial problems of course!)

My planner peace is in the ability to change my planners as I want to and to use any planner I want. I used personal rings only before, now I'm tired of it. I want to switch them frequently because I'm bored quickly. And I change not only planners, but the printables too. I don't want to be stuck in one planner.

GREAT VIDEO!!!!! I am a long time ring girl - since the 90s when I got a Franklin Quest. My favorite size is A5/half letter especially as I age and don’t want to squint as much 🤣 I am in agreement with what you all that you said. I was content for many many years with my rings (sometimes I would change sizes, but not much). Than I found out about EC and was mostly happy in those for several” years. But.....then I saw a coworkers Happy Planner and that is when my planner UN-peace started. One reason I left disc bound was to get away from the FOMO which was a huge source of stress. I went to bound for One Book July last year and enjoyed Bullet Journaling (Ryder Carroll’s method) without the art component which was a fabulous detox from the HP madness. Now I am back in my classic rings with my work planner being a travelers notebook. It is so nice finding someone else who loves rings and appreciates them for what they are.

Totally agree with you! Since I decided to share my pictures on Instagram and subscribed so many planner related accounts, I started to lose my planner peace. Because there are so many options! And all of them are so beautiful! And it's nice to have a collection, but you also need something to come back to, etc. And then comes the feeling of guilt because some covers and planners just sit there, and it's even worse when they are dated... And of course, there's a dilemma of having only one planner for everything and using every single planner and cover you have... Planner community is so helpful, so wonderful, but it indeed is a blessing and a curse. I adore those who can stay in a planner for a year or even longer. I hope that one day I will look at my planner and say - this is it. But for now I just try not to feel guilty and not to take this issue seriously. This whole thing should bring joy, not sadness. And if you can afford trying out different systems, why not? They say a failed experiment is not actually a failure - you still learn much from it.

I knew I would agree with you! It’s not really a bout the planner, it is about the system! I always said, that if you know how you want to plan and it works for you, you have reached planner (as in the person) peace! If you can find your planner (as in the book) peace, I honestly don’t know, because I’m not even searching for it. I’m way too curious, if my system would work in rings, strings, a bound book, a preprinted planner or a Bullet Journal! So far it always did!

This may be my favorite of all of your videos! I believe "planner peace" can exist, I just haven't found it yet. Sometimes I get overwhelmed by all of the choices that get released every time I turn around. And, true confession time here, sometimes I become incredibly stressed when I'm afraid that a company *might* discontinue a layout I like. So I'll buy a whole bunch when they go on clearance with plans to re-date them in the coming years. Of course then the new releases drop and I completely forget about my "bargains" waiting to be re-dated. That leads to frustration because 1) I know that I lack discipline, 2) Even though it was on clearance, I've wasted money, and 3) Our house is not very big ... too many unused planners taking up the space I could be using to enjoy my current planner. All this being said, I LOVE planning (I'm visually impaired, so stickers are my jam 'cause I can't draw!) and I truly enjoy creative content from the community. Thank you Sam for always being so genuine and honest!

I agree with you about the planner community being very influential in planner peace. SADLY, over the last few years I have followed the trends and have struggled to find planner peace. I use to carry just a simple 2 year monthly planner that you pick up for free around Christmas at the bank or doctors office. Then one day I ran across these bullet journals videos and thought wow this is awesome I can create my own planner, but soon I realized I can't write fancy nor I am I a artist so I began the search again, next it was the Travelers Notebook, there were too many books that I didn't know what to do with in that system, plus they weighed my purse down and the good leather covers are quite expensive. Next was the rings I love filofax and but once again had too many things to figure out what I needed them for. I thought Happy planners and other similar systems but the next one I committed to was Hobonichi Weeks Mega, I used one all of 2019 and ordered one for this year. Only to notice I didn't use the weeks parts. I only the monthly parts and I left alot of blank pages in the back. So recently I ran across an add for Mochithings and ordered a simple monthly planner. A small one to toss in my purse. It was has worked so far. I did however notice ads and videos about Erin Condren. There was a mid year sale I purchased a monthly just to see. I have decided to use it for a work and church planner. I still keep a bullet journal I use mostly to journal. I am on a search for simplicity. We will see how it will out. 🤦‍♀️😆

I discovered Bullet Journalling back in September 2017. I decided to try it. Then I saw Boho Berry had a Chic Sparrow traveler’s notebook to house it, and I wanted one too. I started with a fabric one from Dream and Anchor to test the waters, then got the only A5 I own in Pemberley Garnet when it was originally discontinued. So in 2017 and 2018, I used a bullet journal. It ended up becoming a mix of a bullet journal and a personal journal. I was taking it to work, so it was easy to make weekly pages and keep up with them, and I would write in my journal during lunch break. The thing is, it was very easy to keep it private because my workplace was just me and my boss. I also experimented with page layouts to see what I liked. I would look for inspiration for the spread online. It was... very stressful. Then in late July I was in a car accident so I only used the notebook as a journal. I kept appointments in my phone. I did some weekly pages sometimes, but only when I didn’t feel overwhelmed by it. Since making weekly and monthly pages became more of a chore than anything else, I looked into planner systems. The hobonichi weeks caught my eyes, but it was waaay to expensive for me. I liked the layout, though. So I saw that Moleskine had a planner with the exact same layout, and it was my planner for 2019. I also started a new job with lots of people, so I did not want to bring a personal journal there. Because my planner and my journal were separate, I more or less stopped journaling. I would make a few entries every month, sometimes not at all. I looked into the different hobonichi planners again as 2019 came to a close. Again, too expensive in my taste. I decided to prepare a bullet journal in an A6 notebook I had laying around. I made a January monthly and two weekly spreads. That was it. A few weeks ago, I decided to start journaling again. I had that A5 notebook I had been using since August 2018 meant to be my second bullet journal, and it was less than halfway filled. I am alone at home, have been for the past 8 weeks now. I have been so confused as to which day of the week it was and what happened when that I decided to start journaling daily again. I also started working from home, so it was perfect to do weekly pages again. I have a big stack of stickers and washi tape I got over the past 3 years, and using those to decorate the pages is less stressful than looking at pretty spreads online and try to be creative and to beautiful pages. I also don’t do monthly pages because I hate those. I never did any kind of trackers either, too stressful for me. For now, I am happy with what I have. I mostly use my bullet journal as a memory keeper, and things I know will happen later than the week I am in get in my phone. And most of the pages are dedicated to journaling. I have yet to see what the future holds, but I always count on my phone to plan future and recurring events. Phew that was LONG sorry!

Even though I’m a part of the planner community, I’m never really influenced by what others have. It’s shown me planners I never knew of. I loved the A5 hobonichi cousin when I was in college because I could have all my stuff in one. I love the B6slim Jibun Techo when I’m working odd shifts because it helps me keep track of my hours and free time. I love the weeks layout when my life is simple (like now I’m bujo’ing that kind of layout in my MD b6slim) because it’s just enough to keep track of chores and such. I use a b6slim notebook to journal in a trifolio and I have a standard size tn for faith. I love seeing others layouts and setups but I’m personally never influenced to buy something new unless it’s a planner that fits the standards I’m used to

But changed my mind a lot, tried a lot of sort. And now, I'm back to rings. I tried these last 3 months, pocket, personal, A5, to come back to a personal. Just like you, the best compromise I guess. Mostly my own inserts, to fit my own needs, and yearly and monthly from peanuts planner co. But again, really interesting video, thank you so much !

Thing is with me, I really want to love rings and I have a Malden, for their versatility. But I get really bothered by the impermanence of the pages. Same exact problem I have. I think ring bounds are the most organized systems but I love looking back on past dates when I am out with my planner. And, as you say I spend hard earned money on stickers that I just throw away when the month or 2 are over. Storing ring inserts is not the same as bound. Some would say to have a ring bound along with a separate journal but I seriously have a hard time keeping up with 2. I have a A6 ring bound that I keep trying to see how it can work for me. As of now the Bujo and the Hobo are my main go to. I did at least figure out how to get my A6 Hobo to work for me as one planner so that is in testing phase.

Thank you -- I agree with you. I went through a lot of different kinds of planner. I thought Erin Condren was giving me planner peace after trying several brands. But then I decided I needed to try Power Sheets, so I did. What I discovered is that as a retiree, I didn't need anything that intense. Since I spent so much money on PowerSheets, instead of a new Erin Condren for 2020 I found an inexpensive planner that I found on Amazon. It is perfect! It's larger than the Erin Condren, so I have more room to write stuff. I worried about paper, since I use fountain pens. The paper in the new planner is good, and it works wonderfully with sheening inks. I plan to get another one next year. I have also begun writing in a journal, which gives me more space when I need it. Power Sheets lasted a month and while I enjoyed all the introspection, it didn't really tell me much that I didn't already know. I've begun to practice minimalism and all of the fits nicely with that.

I’ve done my fair share of experimenting with different planners and materials for sure, and while part of that could seem wasteful, I also feel like it has helped develop routine and practice in using a notebook. I’ve been in a passport TN for over four years now almost exclusively (after a couple of decades - eep! - in personal rings). While I change out my covers and the type of inserts I use from time to time, I’ve been more consistent since finding this system in note-taking, journaling and planning than I ever was in rings. Artists try out different materials, athletes practice with different equipment... I think experimenting is an important part of honing/growing your craft. Also as with other disciplines, I find that peace comes when you find methods or tools that serve your joy and needs rather than trying to meet the approval of those around you too. We change as people over time as well, so it makes sense that our planners grow and change over time alongside us. 💕

@@samplans Day Designer from Target/Amazon. A cheaper and bigger alternative to the Simplified Planner, basically. However... I just ordered me a random daily b6 from Amazon Japan to use for work next year lol I jinxed it!!

Yay Sam, I love hearing your thoughts on planner peace. Thank you for touching on this hot topic. I am one who definitely believes in planner peace. Not a popular opinion but I’m okay with that. Perhaps if people find something that they love and feel the urge to move into another system to watch this video first..lol. I could help.

Sam Kelley Not a bad idea to have less #s. I sometimes fall into the trap of looking for inspiration on IG but forget to think about what I want or need within my planner. I suffer from the squirrel effect big time.

I have never been able to use personal size because it's just not big enough for all the things that i want to write down, but that being said, i can still gain a wealth of knowledge and ideas from your videos regardless of size. I just take the ideas and change them over to my B6 Kikki K or my A5 Kikki K, lol sometimes both!! I had been in travelers notebooks for a couple of years, and all last year i used the Weeks and i had intended to do so this year but I switched back to my Narrow / Standard size and had used that for the first part of the year through this past week. I use an A5 TN for tracking things and will continue to use that for t hat purpose. BUT THEN.....I saw a sale ad for Kikki K and i thought...hmmmmm, i haven't used rings in forever. So i placed a couple of orders and the planners arrived yesterday. it was like christmas at my house rofl. so i've set them up and i am diving right in and remembering why i loved rings all those years ago and why did i ever leave them!!! so, all that being said....you shouldn't lose followers just because you change up your set up. everything can be translated to the binder or planner of choice with a little tweaking. and....it was watching how thrilled you were to be back in rings that had me first thinking about going back to rings myself. I'm still adjusting and tweaking things a little here and there, but that's the fun of it all isn't it? so, keep doing what you're doing and we'll follow along!! thanks for sharing your love of rings and enjoyment in planning!!

Enjoyed this video so much! I believe that I have found my planner peace with my hobonichi weeks. It fits my needs perfectly and I can have a little fun with stickers and decorating as much or as little as I choose! I love watching all the different systems and people setting them up and planning etc but dont really feel the urge to get every new setup. I dont think I would ever get an Erin Condren planner, or a rings, I have tried the Happy Planner mini, a travelers notebook setup with strings, a weeks (not hobonichi) and a Stalogy a6. I went from a6 to a B6 and use that as a journal/memory keeping and to the hobonichi weeks for planning and am content!❤️ will I ever go back to a Happy Planner or another type? Who knows, but thats the beauty of if! Its your choice, your time and money and your happiness

But it was soooo pretty couldn't help myself!

The reason why I don’t have planned peace is because I keep trying to be something I’m not. I spent way too much money on HP stickers and planner accessories trying to do it like the planner community. I am not a decorative person. I bought the Filofax because that was another trend. The papers are too small and thin. So I bought Etsy paper. I’m not good at printing. I bought Erin Condren (2) but didn’t stick with it. I felt they were too small for me to write in. I bought the Plum Planner and tried a daily layout. It was huge. Loved most about it but the size was too much and I added a bunch of extras in it and I didn’t use any of them. I bought the Bullet journal and all the pens/markers to doodle and create. I stuck with that the most because I kept it simple. But drawing out my monthly calendar and weeks became too time consuming. I want to be creative but I am not. I watch KZbin videos and see everyone’s beautiful, creative planners and I envy that. I think if I buy the planner/supplies, I can replicate that. It just comes down to I’m not a very busy person so I don’t need to write a lot of stuff and I’m not creative to make my planner pop. So it just looks boring and plain. So.... still no planner peace for me.

Have you tried just getting paper that's already decorated? I had the same problem and bought the DodoPad filofax refills. Boom, looks pretty, and I've got nothing to add to it :p

Sam Kelley I have found I just don’t have a busy enough life to use a planner every day. I use To-do lists and Google Calendar. I write my college assignments in a regular lined notebook. I love the idea of using a planner, I’ve just never found one to stick with. I tried to buy all the accessories thinking it would get me into it, but I just can’t get into a routine of writing in something everything.

Thank you so much for sharing! I'm a teacher who's home working for the time being so have shifted my planning style a bit. But, I continue to love my Hobonichi Weeks inside an original Midori Traveler's notebook along with a couple of other inserts. Is it "Pinterest worthy"? Probably not, but it is working for me. :-)

I'm polyamorous! I love most everything (except rings...sorry) & I know I'm going to stray. I can't be monogamous to just one... do I keep blank books around if I feel like seeing how green the grass is on the other side. Hobonichi A6, A5, mega weeks, stalogy, TN, they're all beautiful!

If you can still play with all the planners then that is a good thing because you have the best of all the planners...lol. Unfortunately, I have tried that but it stresses me out completely. I am one that truly seeks to have just one and then the hobby is to give that one planner all the bells and whistles.

I thought I was to planner peace after trying a lot of stuff but then Covid-19 happened and my job got a lot more busy and a lot more complicated (I know, opposite of most people). I was in discs, thought I had found the perfect inserts. But too much room for personal and not enough room for work notes. So using the discs for reference and moving into Hobonichi Cousin for planning. I’m hoping it’s the having my cake and eating it too plan. But I do have the safety net of going back to discs if it doesn’t work out by just changing the sections again. I’m keeping the monthly and weekly inserts.

I started out in a wide TN then moved to B6 slim and tried Jibun Techos which really didn't work for me because I just don't have appointments although I loved the vertical week setup... but my spreads were always blank lol I would have stickers and one appointment and about 30 to do items for work and it just was well.. kinda stupid.. lol but then I moved into personal rings and found planner peace and stuck with it for a year... unfortunately my eyesight is getting worse and worse and I think I'm going to have to move my same beloved system into an A5 ring... I'm hoping it won't be too much for me to carry around because I'm 4'9 but it is what it is... getting old sucks lol I'm trying a TN again though in standard size and I do like it however it doesn't feel like home... having the books just makes me anxious and I can't find anything.. my brain also likes taking out the clutter of pages I don't need anymore and I need to be able to yank em out lol *sigh so off to amazon I go to pick up an A5 malden as I won't be able to afford the pricer Gillio's or Van Der Speks anymore being an an A5 size. I will have to say though your faith in Filofax makes me feel better about moving up :)

Loved this video VERY much. Thank you Sam !!! When you get the chance can you share your best practices on using your digital phone vs personal planner ? Is your phone only for data keeping or have you ever planned on your phone? I have been a planner fan for the longest time and I have amassed quite an impressive collection. I’m a born collector. But recently i have noticed that I am shifting to digital. It doesn’t lessen my love for writing on planners but I want to look for ways where I can both be an efficient digital planner and a contented paper planner at the same. Thinking of just using my planners as journals. Would really appreciate your thoughts. Thanks again Sam for great planner videos. Always looking forward to your latest posts. Stay safe ! - Chris from Manila
