It's 2023. What are some common racial stereotypes or microaggressions that you still face in Singapore? How should we respond?

Dr. Janil is just a great guest. He isn't just speaking like a politican yet he sticks to the point and is open to addressing hard questions yet bringing back the laughter afterwards. Thumbs up.

Human itself have this thing called unconsious bias, everyone in the world tend to want to be with people of "alike" be it same interest, colour, race, etc. Similarities are the ones that makes human beings unconsiously bias, no doubt sometimes people do cross the boundaries. Is it possible to eliminate total racism? No. But Singapore did an amazing job to create a harmonous country whereby people are much less racists compared to other countries
@Nostalgi231-u7w Жыл бұрын
Exactly, we cannot eliminate racism entirely but we can get close to it. 80 percent ? Maybe, 90 percent? Maybe. But the country can achieve close to 100 percent but never achieve it.

It’s interesting to also know that Dr Janil’s father was an opposition politician who persecuted by the state during LKY’s era and now Dr Janil himself is a politician from the ruling party.

Im glad that Dr janil covered the fact that minorities can be racist too because growing up ive heard racist comments from the minorities but never said anything about it because apperantly majority race cannot voice out about these stuff or else there'll be backlash
@abc-wd4lk Жыл бұрын
I come from the minority race and I totally agree with this. People from minority races do the exact same thing they hate receiving
@AbdulRahman-uo5sz Жыл бұрын
more like if the majority were to complain it will be less likely to be overlooked or gaslighted as compared to minority. example long queue at stall=good food and less queue=bad food but in actual fact you might have similar tastes

With regards to Denise/s question on how to to involve different guest of different race in this topic, I think you can refer back to approach taken to do the episodes where you did interviews on the different religion practitioners.

Well, racism still does occasionally happen in singapore and we need to try to be sensitive to the different races living in singapore in order to reduce disharmony among the different races living in Singapore.

I believe racial harmony exists in Singapore but racist people still exists

Football used to be unifying regardless of race but look at what happened to it. Advertise festivals through different languages, maybe have an actual multi racial TV channel for a start (Channel 5 is pretty much filled with US media) where you have actual artistes from all races, religion and gender working together.

Racial harmony should not be about tolerance i.e. like gritting one teeth to endure something that we don't like. Rather racial harmony is about recognising the fact that our neighbours are different from us in some aspects yet we accept them and their differences with appreciation and love freely. Unity in diversity. Love your neighbour as yourself. Not about tolerance.

This idea that we can choose to decide what offends us works only in an ideal world, its trite and simplistic. Everyone has limits and everyone has inherent biases. The vast amount of racism in our country is due to ignorance, stupidity and fear of something unknown. Cultural stereotypes further encourages us to pigeon hole individuals into a community box. To be judged either by the best or the worst in the box. Stop thinking of people as a group but as an individual and everything changes. I am not defined by my race, religion, culture, history alone and while I am the sum of all my parts these parts which may have historical value should not have any currency today. Of course only in an ideal world.

I don't get it. Why not just stop yourself from cracking jokes that you know can offend ladies, men, religion, races and even ageism. Just strike a conversation using conversation starters like "what are you busy with recently?" "Woah, it has been raining for weeks, so hard to dry clothes". And if someone opens the can of worms, you can try to divert the topic or shoot it down if you are not meeting the person again. Haha. But honestly, we ought to have the courage at workplace to challenge difficult conversations and let the person know that someone in the group can feel uncomfortable. By the way, why do we see Singlish or kiasuism negatively? I agree with Dr Janil that our national identity is complex and we don't have a defining feature that makes us Singaporean. But we have a group of behaviors that make us more Singaporeans than not.

Singlish and kiasu-ism are integral parts of the Singaporean identity, but they aren't our only defining factors! We're also a practical, efficient and hardworking population 😉

It's impossible to irradicate racism because it runs in the family. Peace can be maintained with harsher rules and laws.

Racial harmony will remain a work in progress. As Singapore becomes more cosmopolitan, its citizens have to aware of we are living in a more diversified world. Migration have made it easier to settle in a new country. Moreover more countries will face the problems of race and religion; racism and racial harmony. Understanding differences between different people and citizens with different background, culture and their way of living. As we embrace these differences, we should learn and respect them so that we not only learn from them their ways of doing things, it will enlighten us in our purse of racial harmony. Polarisation will lead to catastrophic consequences. With peace comes harmony.

Human are naturally racist. We just managed to build up a high racial tolerance between races and it worked. It would work even better once religious rituals that disrupt others get phased out especially the burning etc.
