I was a pro cyclist. Triathlon training (running) lowers my threshold power by about 30 - 45 W ( 6 - 10%). Ditto for running, I can barely finish a 5 km at 3:30 now and when I mean barely finish, I mean it feels like a marathon and I'm thinking of tapping out. Plus the other thing specific training does it create a much broader base of form through all the different metabolic systems, which make the sport (which ever) more fun because you have more cards to play.

I was lucky with the winter here in Northern Arizona, USA. I was able to ride in the cold and sometimes snow and ice through the whole winter. It was less severe than it has been in the past. As a result I'm in better condition than at any time back to 2010 without question and weigh less than the weight I was at in my 20s and even teens. Lately I've begun some running again as an alternate exercise. I ride a road bike most of the time also. I never wear helmets either.

I've just recently started running a lot, whereas my cycling was most of my exercise last year. I've found my sustained power to be going up with very little time spent on the bike, so I'm guessing you did well with your cycling test!

In my personal experience over the past 3-4 months I've been doing both running and riding my mountain bike, I've noticed my FTP decreased ever so slightly, but I've gained both stronger legs and a highly increased aerobic base which is far more helpful. Here where I live is hilly everywhere I go and I only have a mountain bike, so it's quite hard for me to train Z2 HR in the bike whereas it is way easier while running, as you can dose your pace either when going uphill or downhill directly on your body. On the other hand, doing only one of them clearly leaves another group of muscles untrained, which is not that bad in a short effort, but takes a toll in the long rides. So yes, running can help you become a better cyclist (or mountain biker in my case) but only running will not, at least in my personal experience.
@ancoopa
@ancoopa 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Göran. Thank you for the video. An interesting experiment. If I'm not mistaken, when you run uphill, you have a muscle group that is pretty similar to the "biking" muscle group. Many ultramarathon pro runners include biking into their training program to reduce the shock load that comes from huge running volumes. For example, they do power intervals on a bike and this is an alternative to the power uphill running intervals. Cheers! ^^

I've always wondered the same thing. Was an avid bike racer from 1996 to 2016, when I moved over to ultra trail running (100 milers etc). I only ride my bike maybe 10 times a year now, instead of almost every day. And I found I'm still pretty good on the bike. Yes lost a bit of bite but overall I'd like to think with maybr a month of specific bike training I could unlock the old bike legs again. This video confirmed.

I did the exact opposite, originally being a (hobby) runner with 40-50km/week. A couple of years ago, I transitioned more and more into cycling and I would say, it's a 2:1 ratio for cycling since 2018 in terms of duration. My best HM was somewhere at 1:32. Then, in October 2021, I signed up another half distance and boom, personal best 3 minutes faster. To be fair, I didn't quit running, had a few hundred kilometers in and did 3 or 4 tempo runs - mainly to get a feeling what pace I could still sustain, but other than that not much specific training. The only thing I've noticed is that extreme stuff like long runs or excessive trail running hurt a lot more afterwards because you lose a bit of specific muscle from mostly cycling, indeed... I'm pretty sure, it's the same the other way around, you'll lose more on your sprints or high-effort session than on an endurance ride.

Without powermeter it´s very hard to say if you have improved or not. The conditions have to exaktly the same. Speed depends on the temperature, airpressure of the atmosphere and in your tires and wind.
@goranwinblad

Yeah you are for sure right but at least it was not much wind on either of the attempts, so I still think it says something.

I think running has greatly increased my hiking/mountain climbing strength and fitness. Just curious, have you noticed Hokas such as Clifton being narrow at toe box where foot is basically off edge bottom insole? I have normal wide feet. Also noticed the cushioning grounds out if run at a decent speed and doesnt have any bounce. My Nike air max Reacts never lose cushion even running fast and downhill and have bounce, have you tried Nike air reacts 270s? Hokas have nice cushioning at slower speeds and are extremely comfortable love mine for walking in.

I imagine that aerobically your running would have helped but muscular efficiency and endurance in cycling specific muscles will have disimproved. I am not sure just one all out cycling test will give you the answer you want - I haven't watched to the end yet so don't know the exact details of the test you will do but I would suggest that a good test would be a steady climb of 15-30 minutes with decent grade 5-7% maybe (as even as possible) - maybe you could seek out some local Strava segments for a KOM ;)
@goranwinblad

@ymi_yugy3133
@ymi_yugy3133 2 жыл бұрын
Do you have power data? It seems very plausible that not your muscles were at fault but that you simply had a less aero position.
@MarcusFAquila
@MarcusFAquila 2 жыл бұрын
I guess it could be better to compare average watts for the segment, not time. Plus, your shape overall, I guess, become better, considering: lost efficiency on a cycle that was compensated by better physical shape. In other words, in this shape, having cycle in legs, you would perform way better. But yes, once again, it is simply better to compare cycling in watts.
@mewek
@mewek 3 жыл бұрын
Did you measure the average wind speed and direction during both of your rides? This could be a source of pretty large uncertainty, especially in a time-trial type of a ride on a flat surface. A quick estimation for 65kg rider on a 7kg bike cycling at the power of 300W shows that 1m/s of a headwind can make the cyclist about 2km/h slower compared to no-wind conditions! Just wanted to say that you can actually be in a slightly better cycling form than you assume ;)
@goranwinblad
@goranwinblad 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah you are right, I did not measure it but it was very little wind both times at least 😊

I am primarily a runner who rides extensively in the summer but only commutes a couple of miles to work every day by bike. Going out on my first big rides of the year recently I only a little slower than last year. What really hurt after an hour were muscles that I didn’t expect such as my neck from craning it up and my triceps from holding myself upright for so long. After two weeks of consistent riding I am faster than my last year self.
