I ran a half marathon this year. Decided to go for my first marathon in 2025 and considering how I was feeling after the half, this definitely scares me. But I have 10 months to prepare, so I'm just gonna give it my best and see where this goes. Thanks for all the great content and advice, I especially appreciate that you do your research extremely well before giving any advice, it's definitely not the norm on KZbin.

This is not the first time I have seen the 6 minute interval recommended. Great video as always. I am an older runner in the UK - this year, aged 51, did a 20'24 and a recent Parkrun in 20'44. The 5 x 1km repeats is a brutal workout I know from experience! Thanks for the knowledge.

Göran I just ran my first half marathon in Malaga. I ran 1:37.04 and was very very pleased as I’ve only been running for 2 years. I was running 60km weeks at peak with 18-21km long runs (never more than 4 runs per week). I am tempted to sign up for a marathon. Do you think I’d need to add much training other than making my long runs longer (I.e pushing 2hrs long run up to 3 hrs at peak)? I don’t think I’d be able to fit much more in around family commitments

Basically explaining the VO2Max pyramid. Lower intensity makes up the base of the pyramid, mid level in the middle and VO2Maxing on top of the pyramid. So you spend majority of the time on lower intensity.

I have run in both many many times and am 20 to 30 seconds faster in super shoes. I can immediately feel the difference. I think it depends on the runner an Olympic runner did also time trials of 1 km runs. He was 10 seconds faster per kilometer.

Hey Göran! Could you maybe do a video about running in snow and ice? As someone who moved to Norway from an almost snow free country, I find it scary to run during the winter here. And as such I feel I loose a lot of progression and motivation: Thanks for all the great content!

The shoes actually improve efficiency and allows more energy return into your legs especially in later stages of a race.
@childcrone
@childcrone 6 күн бұрын
@@Jhinderliter I don't think so; the way physics works is squishy things are dampers; they absorb energy. That much cushion also allows the ankle to roll/wobble, and 'muffles' the foot's ability to respond properly to the ground.
@Jhinderliter
@Jhinderliter 6 күн бұрын
@@childcrone as a semi elite marathoner, I can assure you that you do not loose energy. I understand what you think is happening. But the shoe is not just absorbing the energy but it is absorbing it, then shooting the energy back into the leg (energy return). It allows runners to run more efficiently and get tired slower. It’s not like running on sand where it zaps your energy out of ur legs. If it was just super soft foam, then you would be correct, but it’s the combination of the soft foam and the carbon plate the allows the energy transfer back into the leg. Sorry I’m a nerd about this stuff but I genuinely think you should go look into the science behind the carbon plated shoes.
@childcrone
@childcrone 6 күн бұрын
@@Jhinderliter I do appreciate your takes. I stand by the statement that squish dampens/dissipates energy. Now the carbon plate you bring up is a different story.
@Jhinderliter
@Jhinderliter 6 күн бұрын
@ correct, if it was just squishy then I would agree. But all these shoes have a carbon plate which makes efficiency way better.

Given how new I am to running I think it will be hard to not have my best year next year. This year I went from barely being able to run 2 miles on the treadmill to finishing a 7.5 mile long run outside yesterday. And that includes nearly 3 months off for surgery. I have a half marathon in September that I’m going to try and hit sub 2 hours.

I achieved my 2024 goal of being able to run a 5k without knee pain, by focusing on strength training. I daresay I exceeded that goal, by then participating in a half marathon in December, and finishing in (just) under 2h, and still being able to walk afterwards (ironically the knee didn't complain, but the right hip did 😅). I want 2025 to be more of that. I still have a lot that I need to address, but I know I can do it. And I want to see if I can participate in at least 2 or 3 running events throughout the year. It's not much, but it should be doable.

I feel like you'd be the perfect person to enter the Barkley Marathon. Maybe a 2026 goal for you? We have a 50mi and 100mi ultra held in Feb and Aug where I live in Buffalo, NY (sub freezing temps in Feb and very hot and humid in Aug). It's called the Beast of Burden. You're welcome to run 100 miles here any time. Bring the family and you can see Niagara Falls while you're here as well.. I hope to do the 50 mile winter version some time in the future. Great tips. Having a goal is so important, even if the goal may take a few years to work up to. I have been running for years and finally started entering races. It definitely adds to the whole training experience. I never wanted to join a race, but I finally did just to prove to everyone how much I wouldn't like it. I was very wrong. I had an absolute blast. As soon as I got home I signed up for more. I'm training for a marathon in the spring, but I have a couple more races in February and March before then. Thankfully I enjoy cold weather running. I'm looking to take 20 min off my marathon time, which should be well within the realm of possibility, but it's also scary. It's the slightly scary goals, as you said, that really pushes you to do your best. Love your channel. I wish you continued success in all you do in the coming year

My goal is to run 10k at a consistent speed without walking and finish in under 1 hour. I usually motivate myself to train when there's a competition in place, but I can't find any coming up next year, so I don't have a strong motive to train distance running. Given that distance running training is time consuming and tiring - long running time, plus stretching, plus injury risk - it's just too much for me. I don't have the habit of training distance running despite once joined distance running class. I just couldn't enjoy running if the weather is bad, physical condition is bad or the view is bad. (so many excuses right?😂) I hope someone can convince me otherwise cuz my brain seems unhealthily stubborn 🙈
