I'm liking the videos and looking into getting into RV transport. I have questions about ways to save. Seems taxes and insurance are two big bites out of profit so I'm looking into starting a LLC in a state that takes advantage of those two things. I'm originally from Ohio and family still there but I'm currently living in a motorhome near the Tennessee/Georgia line and love the area and see myself buying land in the area. I'll start my LLC with a virtual mailbox address in either OH, TN or GA and will run my insurance thru that address as well. Currently I'm comparing the tax benefits and insurance costs in those states. Do you have any thoughts on this?
@WeekendTruckin
@WeekendTruckin 3 жыл бұрын
Hey!! Thanks for watching and commenting! I think what you'll find is with the standard deductions of miles, and per day food and "overnight" expenses is that taxes won't be an issue- I'm sure it needs to be noted that I'm not giving legal advice but only my personal opinion. With an LLC, it's still just going to pass through to your personal income unless you're filing as an S-Corp but I can't see any advantages to that (I file as an S-Corp for my gym and then you have to file business taxes and your personal taxes because you're just an employee to your business). Does that help at all?

I live in Memphis Tn. I worked out of Elkhart Il. for Horizon. I took classes I paid for and learned all the laws. Fees, license, Insurance costs per year, Fuel costs, food, truck stops , Motel costs, Monthly Maintenance VS loads I could handle. These entries depleted my profits overall. At Times there were no runs for me to profit from. I was forced to take a non profit run just to keep my monthly obligations. I loved it, BUT I could not afford the fees etc.. Now my truck is better than it ever was but not acceptable because of its model year. Its a work horse and looks brand dam new. I will take it to my grave before I will get a newer model. Still I stay up to date as much as I will hope for an open mind!! I will stack my 2002 f350 7.3 powerstroke up against the newer models on the road to date. I have the power they do not have! I have to complements from coast to coast on how good my truck looks. Even in Elkhart! Good looks and awesome power.

Ours have stayed the same throughout since I've been on with them! I did hear that Horizon slows down this time of the year though. From what I'm gathering is that Horizon may/seems to have a more robust backhaul board where as our backhauls for the most part are just new campers going places from a lot in ID. There are other random backhauls though, not friendly to eliminating deadhead miles on most trips.

Back then, I'd typically be gone for 3 days a week. I don't have a CDL, and don't need one with my set up(both current and past truck). @@WeekendTruckin what about paying the truck ?? It’s an employee too how you gonna replace it when it’s dead ?
@WeekendTruckin
@WeekendTruckin 3 жыл бұрын
“Paying the truck” is a term I don’t subscribe to. I set aside 15% of the gross pay into a maintenance account for every trip. It’s the same thing so to speak but just broader/basic business practices. I don’t pay my equipment at the gym I own, but I set aside a set amount of revenue every month for maintenance and it sits in said account until it’s needed. Are you in RV transport or hot shooting? RV transport, in my opinion, is as simple as doing side jobs in the construction world as a self employed contractor. You could try and expand upon more sophisticated business practices but it’s just adding more work and “muddying the water” so to speak with how 1099 work passes through regardless of how you set things up. I have two fixed expenses from an operational viewpoint and they are expenses I’d have regardless of if I was transporting (truck payment and insurance). There’s some variable expenses with maintenance that’s definitely Aussie of the amount of miles we put on the trucks, but I keep it simple and they come out of my “pocket”. That’s not me saying they aren’t write offs come tax time, but because of the pass through of contract work it all comes out of your “pocket” so to speak regardless. I keep track of all expenses for tax time but keep it simple when it comes to just operating. I’m averaging a “money in pocket” margin of about 62%. I pay my bills with that money which include my expenses that are tax deductible expenses.
