seeing this video makes me want to rewatch the show and write notes like i'm labelling a book :D! as someone who also came to the fandom late (like 2022? 2023? not too sure) i find your experience relatable and i have many places where i agree with you, as well as many where i disagree. this is the first video i've seen of yours, and i've already decided to subscribe! i love the recaps and the scores at the end are helpful to get your overall views too. :)

Hot take: Trixie was right! She’s a performing artist doing a set and she’s being heckled. She handled them kind of well in my opinion. What Snips and Snails did was unacceptable, but it wasn’t her fault. She didn’t ask them to do it. She was asleep in bed. It’s like saying Marilyn Manson was responsible for Columbine. From trixie perspective she did a show where she was heckled repeatedly, and then was attacked by two members of the audience. If it has been any of the Mane 6 in that position they would have been the hero.

The episodes that stood out to me this season are: - Dragonshy is where I feel like the show really started to take off. - A Dog and Pony Show is actually the episode I really started to like Rarity. - And Party of One is the episode that sealed Pinkie Pie as the one of the main six I liked the most.

So for me I love Party Of One as I feel like S2 A Friend In Deed puts this one into more context. Pinkie Pie puts everyone she cares about first but ends up neglecting herself,This is me headcannoning a bit and heck don't think S2 they thought of that but I think it's a sweet idea.

39:49 Im glad you brought this up as I joined the fandom in 2010 on New Years before 2011 happened. Many male fans hated Rarity the same way they hate Pipp Petals today.

Re: Griffin the Brush-Off: I think this one starts off fairly well, with Pinkie and Rainbow bonding similarly to Rarity and Applejack in the sleepover episode. I agree that the pranking does not work well and it gets too mean-spirited though. Re: Suited for Success: I actually thought it did a rather poor job with its (true, important) message by not being nuanced enough for it. No, the customer is not always right, but the artist is not either. Rarity’s first pass did not involve any asking what her friends wanted, even though her second pass asked that too much. If you don’t even ask what someone wants there is no way you can give it to them. The later episode “Fluttershy Leans In” has pretty much the opposite moral, and the truth is somewhere in the middle but I think that one gets closer. Re: party of one: I do like the gag that Pinkie believed only the least believable of her friends’ excuses, but otherwise I agree.

I'm with you here. I watched seasons 1-5 when I was little, and it wasn't until this year that I finished the series. I don't remember much from season 1 except for the sleepover episode, and I think that's because the premises and scenes are kind of...generic? It's still a good season, but not the most memorable of the series.

My favorite and the one that got me hooked was Bridal Gossip. I knew right away what moral they where doing. Still had fun watching the episode. Not just the story. The play in the simple song and the background music going into the forest.. Had to find out more. What's odd. Until it was pointed out was instead of racism. I saw. Just if a person is different then you and your peers. It warrant exclusion and perhaps fear.

I wonder if season 1 of the show was instead 13 episodes of a semi serialized arc where Twilight Sparkle and the rest of the mane 6 Exploring all of Equestria to get the missing Elements of Harmony gem shards they have been scattered and find and put the pieces back together before Nightmare Moon finds them and use them to destroy the world so it's similar to a collectathon like the Power Stars from Super Mario 64 or the Jiggies from Banjo-Kazooie.

For those who re-watch primarily in first season. Rarity element was not generosity. It's inspiration. Creative indifference. Rarity character now makes since. In my option. Pinky not laughter it's enthusiasm.

Zecora isn't bad its just the Mane 6 are racist that adds too the messy nature considering Zecora is based on old sterotypes however IDW has added black writers and they handle black coding way better than the white writers on the show. So its very slippery slope with this topic and many angles to look at it from

The I.D.W. comics are not canon. They will never be (as a rival company to DHX/Boulder & Atomic Cartoons), as sharing the same client (HASBRO) with it does not mean the others will allow their Intelectual Property®to be used [it has nothing to do with the TRADEMARK™ rights for the TOYS]. . It is clear that the writers at DHX did not cared much about it at the start; but as soon as they had "the Derpy incident" (at the airing date of episode 40) back in season 2 (while at the middle of production of season 3 & EQG1), they took it seriously enough to reject/remake a lot of questionable scripts from that point onwards. -> The first one was episode 61 "Spike at Your Service" [FiM_S3E09]; that originally was a terrible reminder of the atrocities of "voluntary servitude" (slavery) committed by a rich, white-coded character (Rarity, who is also literally white) towards a "sub-human" character (Spike, given his peculiar origin & none_existent "default social position" in pony society). Thankfully the (unwanted) Master role was given instead to Applejack (who is just a lowly, "humble" farmer); so she would be able to feel empathy (rather than pity).

@@speedforcespector Of course, those stories are not supposed to be used as ranged weapons. Books (comical or not), are Melee_only (/jk) . Whenever you mention I.D.W. in relation to the mane show, you have to remind people that are separate timelines [not even better than "Fallout Equestria"]. -> The alternate timelines of Starlight are "more canon" than any FimFiction (regardless if it is sponsored by HASBRO or not).

Eveytime I try to get into this show i can’t get past the first season so I have to deal with people talking about how good the show is and me feeling left out because I can’t get into it 😭 I watch videos on it to try to get myself to get into it but it never changes 😭 maybe this will be the one fingers crossed 🤞🏽😭

Keep in mind, Western animation itself was kind of in a dark age at this time, and with few exceptions, a show being allowed to have continuity at all was truly exceptional. Like, Twilight Sparkle getting a pet early on and it continuously showing up later was pretty mind-blowing for the time, narrative consistently in cartoons was in that sorry of a state. Especially for a fun, seemingly episodic one. The show improved after season 1, but it was definitely special from the start due to circumstances, if nothing else. But if you maybe want some different episodes to watch to get a taste of what it can offer, here's a few really good ones: For no series spoilers: A Canterlot Wedding (Keep in mind, this was advertised with all kinds of "Royal Wedding" stuff- Billboards with that silly hat from the British royal wedding, wedding invitations and swag bags, and Pink Pony Princess merch. This had been mandated by Corporate, so the fandom was convinced they had sold the show's soul prior to its airing) For nuanced emotional messaging: Amending Fences For the feels: The Perfect Pear For humor: Saddle Row Review

Huge Pinkie fan and I love Griffin The Brush Off but I would be lying if I didn't say you gotta be in the mood for the humor it has,Early S1 Pinkie cartoony hijinks and the humor can be so off beat and dry it feels off compared too the last few episodes

I think you came off pretty right with your review, not too hard not too soft on the show. Just right. Your commentary made me think of two points I wanted to share from my childood memories of this episodes: 1)In the parasprites episode I always thought that Celestia's visit just happened off screen, I never connected any of her subsequent apperences to that. 2)The buffalos episode was one I erased from my memory. When you remainded me of its existence I was like "Yikes". Now even ignoring all the intentional real life paralells, that episode just kinda sucks. I can say that because when I was a kind and watched that episode I had no idea what America was in a first place, let alone all the complex hisotry of racism that goes along with it. So I did not make the association with Buffalos=Nativa American, Ponies=Colonizers. Yet even then I found that episode so boring and usless, I remeber that at least once I decided not to watch MLP that day rather than watching that episode that was airing. I just think that the stuff at one point understood that the episode was kinda messed up and decided to not put a lot of effort in to it. When I was a kid I was also very confused at why we never got to see the buffalos or even the city again. I'm pretty sure it's the only episode in S1 who has no follow-up in any of the later seasons (rightfully so I might add) which really confused me as a kid. Note: In the Cute Mark Chronicles I remeber Pinkie Pie saying right after she finished her story "That's how Equestria was founded" which I'm not sure if it's just something random put in in the Italian dub, or was there in english too and Pinky was just messing with the crusaiders.

I think the thing you mentioned about the Cutie Mark Chronicles episode must've been a change when it was dubbed because I don't remember hearing it in the English speaking version. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

@@AshleysPonyStable I just to be sure I checked both version, and she actually says the same thing in both. "And that's how Equestria was made" it's the exact quote, so she was just messing with the Crusaiders. I find this line VERY werid, it's non-sense in the worst way possible, I get that it comes from Pinky but she follows her own logic, not just the logic of random.

Just a small correction: We never saw the buffalos again, yes, but we DID see Appleoosa again, multiple times. Braeburn came back a few times, too, but not as often as Appleoosa was being mentioned or visited. Off the top of my head, the Crusaders were in Appleoosa when they met Troubleshoes not long before they got their cutie marks, and Applejack and Dash take Pinkie and Fluttershy to Appleoosa to play that three-pony team sport I forget the name of, then Dash meets Patton Oswalt-Pony there in his second appearance in one of the last seasons. I'd have to check the wiki for a more complete list, though.

As someone who started watching MLPFiM midway into the first season airing, it's always interesting to see the opinions of someone coming into it this long after it ended, especially to see where opinions of the fanbase at the time happen to line up! For example, I remember early on the Crusader episodes were always dreaded because people generally weren't interested in them and hated their episodes, but as the series went on, stuff got better and people got over that... and started dreading the Spike episodes instead. xD Don't get me wrong, people love Spike as a character, but more often than not the episodes focussed on him were terrible and played up all his worst aspects. I also remember Twilight and Pinkie being the big favourites of the Mane 6 at first (the big nerd and the lolrandom one appealed to the early fanbase of ironic viewers from a certain site), but over time that evened out too. The episodes Suited for Success and A Dog And Pony Show definitely endeared Rarity to the fandom as a whole, for example! Oh, and the talk about Celestia's big visit being put off, then randomly showing up, then having a big visit later, reminded me of the theories going around early on that the first season was out of order, that her appearance with the phoenix is the 'put off' big visit and it was after that she started dropping in randomly and visits stopped being a big deal. The winter-end episode airing before the autumn-start episode contributed to that theory, too.

I'm actually really glad you mentioned that because whilst working on the video, the idea that the series had aired in the wrong order did actually cross my mind. I didn't have enough valid evidence for my theory to warrant bringing it up in the video, but I definitely noticed the episode order being a little strange

@@AshleysPonyStable 1.) I liked the comedy & found the Battle between the 2 factions to be Unique and fun. 2.) I found Little strong Heart, her dad and Braeburn's introduction to be a good start for their characters and i would have loved to see the buffalo more in the show to see them expanded a bit besides a few silent cameos but On the bright side They appear a little more in the comics so it balanced out a little for me. 3.) Found the moral to be fine. Not fantastic or anything just fine. 4.) It expanded the lore of the world making me want to know even more about Equestria. It's one of those season 1 episodes that I always find myself watching reaction videos for but if I had to give it a rating it would be 7/10 (The episode would be towards the lower middle of I was ranking every single episode though) Oh and to put my thinking into perspective there are no episodes I hate/dislike I just love some episodes more than others.
