About using crop sensor lenses on full frame. Yes, you get rid of vignetting. Yes, you get rid of a lot of sharpness and CA problems in the corners. But there's a caveat too. Crop sensors typically have a greater pixel density (which of course you mentioned). This means that even in the centre, the image will be softer than on a full frame. Sure, if you buy a high end lens, this might be unnoticeable. But there's a lot of glass where the sharpness difference is really noticeable, especially if your crop sensor has a huge megapixel count (yes, R7, I'm looking at you).
@aidanoherlihy161411 ай бұрын
Are there any videos that go into more detail on how the pixel density causes softness? So it sounds like the r7 with the 100-400 would suffer from this? Does this issue extend across the frame or is it just in the centre?
@DominikMarczuk11 ай бұрын
@@aidanoherlihy1614 it happens across the frame but it's the easiest to spot in the centre, where the lens is the sharpest. As for the videos, I can't remember any specific one but I'd recommend John Frost's channel. Whenever he tests lenses on FF and APS-C, he looks specifically for the signs of softness on APS-C. With some lenses, it's quite noticeable.
@AnthonyGugliotta11 ай бұрын
I've also heard this argument about more softness in the center. I know for sure I've heard it in an older Tony and Chelsea video? The conversation on IQ can get very nuanced, and almost always requires a case-by-case comparison to compare the resolving power of each specific sensor to its full-frame counterpart. In such a case that's why websites like The Digital Picture exist so you can really pixel peep! :)
@DominikMarczuk11 ай бұрын
@@AnthonyGugliotta Yup. And I think the bottom line should be: do your research before you splurge on any lens ;)
@daysandwords11 ай бұрын
@@DominikMarczuk You mean Christopher Frost. And yes, NO MATTER THE PIXEL DENSITY, the OPTICAL performance of a lens will always be better on a larger sensor, if all else is equal. e.g. If you get a $1000 full frame lens and the equivalent $1000 APS-C lens (e.g. 50mm for full frame and 33mm for APS-C), and shoot them with everything optimised... the full frame photo is sharper, so long as there are ENOUGH pixels (12mp is plenty).

I currently have a canon t7. I do mostly wildlife and the occasional portraits. I’ve been thinking about upgrading to a new body but I’ve seriously been torn between the canon r8 and the r7. The r7 is a crop sensory will give me the ability to do what I’ve already been doing but better. The r8 is a full frame which would allow me to do better at other genres that I haven’t tried and could benefit from the dynamic range. They’re both the same price so I’m torn!

@@Obscure462 I can get the science of why full frame should be better. Each photocyte (pixel) gets a lot more photos, leading to better balance and accuracy in and between photocytes especially when photons are scarce. The 'shot glass analogy' about this is good. But yeah full frames pay for it in other ways, such as narrower depth of field (the opposite of what I often want in street photos) and weight/cost. If it works, it works, and people were taking amazing photos 70 years ago with vastly less capable cameras.

Um … the biggest issue with swapping lenses with APSCs and FullFrames is the lens mount. Cannon apsc lenses are not compatible with full frame cameras. However, apsc sigma and Tamron lenses are. The only issue is the lens will give a peep hole affect and you need to crop the image in post. When you crop images, you lose pixels and your 20mp camera is only 8mp. A 45+ mp full frame can be cropped down to a more accessible 12 or so mps you have the built in mode on newer cameras. If your genera requires heavy cropping on a full frame camera then an apsc without the cropping may give you a better result. And if you buy third party lenses you need to make sure you understand the supplier’s labeling because you may buy an apsc lens if you’re just looking for an EF mount for your full frame.

This video is a Canon perspective on APS-C vs Full Frame. When I was a Canon DSLR user, it was all true. But today some of the lenses for Fuji and Sony APS-C sensors are on-pair with the top full frame lenses. And APS-C cameras are also top-notch. Fuji X-H2 is no smaller than Sony A7 for example, if you prefer a bigger body. It's just Canon who seems to keep treating their APS-C system as an entry level cheap stuff for beginners. And since you can't have 3rd party lenses on Canon, you can not taste how good APS-C lenses actually are these days. Plus Speed Boosters exists - an adaptor from a full frame lens to a crop body with a lens that focuses the light on a smaller sensor.

I use a fuji X-T2 and it's perfect for me. The new Fuji lenses are cheaper and sharp from wide open, which is better than some full frame lenses that's the same price or even more expensive. ie. the Fujifilm XF 33 1.4 which is equivalent to a Full frame 50 f2.1. It is already sharp at 1.4 compared to maybe the canon EF 50 1.2 which is as sharp only when you stop down to f2.8, or the canon rf 50 1.8 which is only as sharp if stopped down to f4.0. You won't really get the same or better quality unless you spend a kidney to get the latest and greatest RF 50 1.2 or the Sony GM equivalent.

The answer is... It depends. If you're shooting from the same position, no... The depth of field is the same. I own the R5 and the R7. The R7 I use when I travel with the family. The R5 I use for shooting wildlife. When I use the R7 for wildlife I lose a lot of detail especially on low light. So when I’m shooting at Don and at dusk the R7 does terrible comparatively to the R5. Not a little bit but a lot. Using the same lenses and the same settings. If you’re using an R7 and shooting with a RF 100 to 500 mm lens and your shooting at Dawn or at dusk or in overcast conditions, the quality of the picture that you’re going to get is going to be poor in comparison to the R5. Additionally the auto focus servo tracking mode works exponentially better in the R5 than it does in the R7. It constantly drops tracking subjects with the R7. It jumps between the foreground the background and the subject. No matter if I shoot in shutter priority (tv) or full manual. Tweaking and adjusting all the settings in the menu settings, there is no exception. The R5 does everything better than the R7. As far as a crop factor goes if you’re shooting on a 800 mm F 11 you’re not actually getting 1280 mm what you’re getting is the center of the lens. Go ahead and put the 800 mm on a full frame camera and snap a picture then put your crop sensor camera on the same lens. When you take the picture, you’ll notice that the difference in the depth of the image is changed slightly. You’re not getting magnification of a 1200 mm lens. Canon does make one, it’s very expensive but I believe you can rent it for a decent price. Go ahead and rent it and then place it on a full frame camera and then place the 800 mm on the full frame camera and take a picture. Now there’s a huge difference because you’re actually getting the magnification of a 1200 mm lens. Just because things look good on paper doesn’t mean they actually look good in the field. If you can’t afford an R5 or a full frame censored camera then of course a crop sensor camera is the next thing. And yes they have high resolution in the crop sensor of the canon R7. But that extra resolution is not going to improve your photograph when taking in low light. All it does is produce extra noise that has to be dealt with in post processing and you can’t always get it all out. So the end result in low light is a poor quality image. In order to get a similar high-quality image as a full sensor camera shooting with the RF 100 to 500 mm or the RF 800 mm F 11, you need to shoot under clear skies from 10 AM to 3 PM. This gives you the optimal light availability during the day which is required for these lenses and combination of the R7. Now if you can afford to purchase a 600 mm F4 lens then you can shoot and slightly lower light without compromise. But most people buying the R7 are not people looking to purchase a $12,000 lens.

Resolution IS tied to sensor size under one condition. Resolution ISN'T the number of pixels. Say, you've got a crop sensor and a full frame sensor. Both are 24 Mpix. Is the resolution the same in both? Nope. The number of pixel is. And in this particular example, even though these are two sensors that differ in size, resolution is bigger on the crop sensor. It's because its pixels are smaller, thus on the same square area, say 1 square millimeter, there's a lot more pixels than on 1 square millimeter of the full frame sensor. The smaller the pixels, the greater the resolving power (a.k.a resolution - the ability to resolve detail to a greater extent) is. If you have a 24 Mpix full frame sensor, these 24 millions of pixels is, well..., just a number of pixels this sensor has.
@AlessioFurlan20 күн бұрын

In the same spirit as you saying its better to get the full frame lens...in case you want to upgrade, but full frames are coming down in price, and as you also pointed out, it is the current standard. ZV-E1 is like $2k, so if you really want to get into photography and buy a brand new system, why not start with full frame? For people who aren't sure if they want to dive into photography, maybe a used camera or an iPhone, before evaluating if they want to get a full frame. I look at it like this, would i recommend someone go out and get a DSLR? Prob not, that has been surpassed by mirrorless. So would I recommend APS-C? No, that has been surpassed by full frame.

Size still matters, just not as much as your skills, like in many things in life.

I don't hate on crop sensors. I own both. But there really is no argument to be made as far as the advantages of full-frame. I can only really see one advantage of crop sensors, that is they tend to be smaller and therefore easier to slot into a pocket or pouch. I shoot on a Pentax k1ii. I use a lot of old film cameras and enjoy the full-frame benefits. All of the lenses are backwards compatible. My Sony system can benefit from all the legacy Minolta glass even with AF. My Pentax can benefit from all of the legacy Takumar FF and Pentax FA lenses. I don't see.many professional photogs using crop sensor.

You should compare a Fujifilm XH2s against the R5 not some canon garbage toy

I'm not sure how anyone can be inspired to shoot with a Canon camera. They are so soulless and generic in my honest opinion

Yes indeed - sensor size absolutely DOES matter! The differences may not be hugely noticeable, until perhaps you compare a DX format camera with a medium format sensor camera. Let's put it this way: As far as overall quality goes, sensor size matters MORE than the number of megapixels (within a particular range) because you'll be getting better dynamic range. You want more megapixels ONLY if you want more detail. And by the way, such detail cannot be easily achieved unless you have lenses of superior image quality with high resolution and few aberrations, especially color fringing. Digital reveals low quality lenses MUCH more easily than film can do.
