Speedrunning can really just ruin your life not just the game your playing.

I enjoy learning tricks and various ways to "break" games but the competitive side of chasing leaderboard ranks is generally not fun for me (it can definitely be addictive, though). Some tricks are just fun to mess around with and some tricks are agonizing to attempt. Even if a speedrun route is enjoyable, the monotony of playing again and again just to get slightly faster times is a chore. Competition is fun in moderation but in excess it seems unhealthy.

I can't find the video on this, but DidYouKnowGaming did a video on Metal Gear Solid 2 (I think) where apparently the devs reported that working with Kojima was a huge hassle. Like he wasn't an abusive asshole, but he'd just straight up ignore their input even though its they're job. Like the whole ladder climb scene? Everyone in the office was like "You really should cut this down or cut it out" and he was like "nah its funny as fuck leave it in im Kojima L + Ratio"

@@poiri That depends on who you ask. It may be one of the best scenes to you, it may be one of the best scenes to many, I even kind of like it, but to many others, they can find it extremely boring, repetitive, or unnecessary, and their opinion on that is valid.

I get the want to separate Potter from Rowling, but she is literally using her fame as the author to push anti-trans views. It's one thing when the creator's long dead and no longer benefiting from viewers' support (like Lovecraft, who was absurdly racist), but she is currently, actively making our world a worse place to even exist for people like me. I'm just tired, man

Lovecraft later in his life mellowed out a lot on his racism, even if he never really discarded it. It's just something to take note of that at least he *tried* to go back on his previous extremism. Meanwhile people like Rowling are sinking yet more chips into said prejudice.

I feel that the only reason people are doing the “separating the art from the artist” talk with Rowling, as far as Harry Potter goes, is simply because they want to wrench it out of her hands and make it impossible to associate with her because the world of Harry Potter is unique. That it is well beyond JK Rowling’s design. That being said, that movie remake will make it impossible.

For me personally, since every speedrun I do is 100%, I feel like it does ruin the game a little bit. Like, I mentally can't get out of my perfectionist mindset. If I fuck up, I get frustrated. "you're better than this, you don't mess up." Type shit. I just do bad with rust and expect better from myself, even when I derust from Rock Band.

as someone who personally does "speedruns" of Super Metroid, I can't play Super casually anymore, I get too into the habit of wall jumping, doing certain tricks, etc. It's so difficult to back to playing Casual for me

I had a top 50 run of ff12 sky pirate den% for years. To this day I still love the game and think it's one of the best in the franchise. I really should start practicing the route for the Zodiac age version and see if I can get a decent time again. Point is, a good game will always be good. Most people would still find great enjoyment even after running.

Nah I absolutely disagree with FF7 not being a good game now, on the basis that I literally played the game for the first time ever in my late 28s, and it absolutely holds up to even modern games!!! And the graphics are absolutely charming, and the game play is incredible

@@rafael502 I also disagree with the game aging poorly, because I don’t believe that it was ever good. Granted, I played the game for the first time only recently so I don’t have the most experience to say that, but the game was bad in nearly every aspect, so I cannot see how it was seen as good at the time with how many good (J)RPGs were coming out/already out.

4:37 i have always dissagreed with the statement "x game has aged well/poorly" because games dont age. ff7 has not changed since it came out. what changed is your standards. you may think ff7 is a bad game now, and im not saying thats an invalid opinion, but that's more of a reflection on your growth as a person and what you value in games now rather than the game itself "aging."

I think where Jules misses on the JKR controversy is that by continuing to give the franchise money, you are enabling her to be able to platform her hate. I fully support enjoying the HP universe IF you are not directly giving her money. Buy the books and games used or "Yarr" them. Then make sure it's a talking point when discussing them with your friends to do the same

There is obviously a limit to separating the art from the artist. Controversial takes when it comes to other people's lives? As long as you aren't physically hurting anyone, then have your opinions, garbage or otherwise and I'll still enjoy the work you've done, with that little niggle in the back of my head that I can ignore. If you're someone like the lead singer for Lost Prophets? ...Yeeeeaaaaah, then I can never enjoy your work ever again.
@LuciferSweetDream
@LuciferSweetDream 14 күн бұрын
Depends on where you draw the line regarding what constitutes harm to others. I can concede that while JK Rowling is not actively physically attacking people herself, her rhetoric ABSOLUTELY leads to physical harm to trans people as bigots will be emboldened by it to attack trans folk.
@poiri
@poiri 14 күн бұрын
@@K4RN4GE911 that’s just your personal limits, there doesn’t have to be one. If I am watching a movie and learn it’s directed by a mass murderer that does not impact my enjoyment (and barely even my perception) of the work, so I wouldn’t say there’s “obviously” a limit.

Sometimes the art is the artist, like the whole “personal is political” thing. It also limits our understanding of the art itself, for example, music is sometimes used to communicate something, whether it be pride in your people or a struggle with the world around you and it’s morals, at the end of the day, they are making it not to sell records most of the time.

The only thing I want to see go away with speedrunning is the expectation that collaborations or competitions about speedrunning have money go to charity rather than the talent playing the game. If someone gets a new WR, I want to see them get rich. If someone wins a tournament, I want to see them have enough money to not have to work again. At absolute most I would want to see a 50/50 split between speedrunner prize pools and charity donations.
This run was DOOMED... but saved by a dead squirtle
