I’m just going to take a guess, that there are a small but not insignificant number of people, for whom these games are their entire steam/gaming experience, or at least a lot of it. I’m thinking they probably just like to occasionally sign in, download a 100 object game after work or whatever, and switch their brain off while playing it for a little treat. This would explain why there are so many, since they’ve got a niche but profitable audience of people who wouldn’t traditionally be considered gamers otherwise, who reliably buy them, then knock them out in an afternoon.

I'm surprised by the amount of quality in some of these games. As someone familiar with this trend of 100 hidden cat games, I had always expected that a developer came along and started making these and then some other greedy developers came along and cashed in on an emerging trend with some awful, cheap knockoffs. Seems some genuine effort went into a decent bit of these and that 75% of the games you looked at you felt comfortable recommending (at least, to an extent). Great video, as always.
@Graeldon
@Graeldon 24 күн бұрын
Recommended in terms of games worth your time if this is a genre you enjoy or are interested in trying. As always with different game genres, your personal enjoyment may vary! But, I also agree, I was suprised by the effort that went into some of these games. I was expecting a bunch of repetitive cash grabs.

That thing about how some of these games had 100 achievements when there was reason to have 101+ made me go 'Oh! 100 achievements must be a Steam-mandated limit.' Then I looked it up and it appears the actual limit is...5000 achievements?? Holy crap that's a lot still. But...so...that's not the reason. How very odd. Oh, and I look forward to you eventually hitting the 'A ____ Full of Cats' series. It'll be 100 Hidden Cats, part 2! I'm sure you're excited for it. (Unironically, I actually played An Arcade Full of Cats and it was...actually kinda cute. Had little cutscenes, a bit of a story.)
@gimok2k5
@gimok2k5 25 күн бұрын
To be fair, with 100 hidden items, having 100 achievements means there is one per whatever is hidden. If these were one of those achievement-spam-games who only exist to give someone an ungodly amount of achievements in as little time as possible, it would go for full 5000 for just having the game running for a few minutes. And yes, those "games" exist.
@CharemTheShadox
@CharemTheShadox 25 күн бұрын
@@gimok2k5 This is true for most of the games, but later in the video Graeldon also covered some '101 hidden objects' games that still only gave 100 achievements, meaning that one creature/thing in the set of 101 was being rejected from having an achievement for seemingly no reason. This is what my original comment was referring to as far as this just being weird.
@DeviousHands
@DeviousHands 25 күн бұрын
@@CharemTheShadoxcan't confirm this exactly, but the developer for HoloCure has a game with 162 achievements, only 84 of which got approved for Steam. Something to do with seeing the influx of people getting achievements all of a sudden and Steam seeing it as an "achievement farm", or general means of scamming their system. I wonder if the 101s are under similar restrictions, due to how quickly the achievements are gained? I can't know personally, I'm neither valve nor the devs, but I imagine they put in 101 achievements and Steam only accepted 100 for whatever reason

Commenting about 22 minutes in: Honestly, I was kind of expecting worse! Spamming Steam achievements is sketchy, but it's not like it's actually hurting anyone, and if a dev is otherwise well-intentioned then it's hard to fault them for playing to the achievement collector audience. It's so hard to find a reliable audience as an indie dev. (And you still have to actually _do something_ to get these achievements, so it's less sketchy than I've seen elsewhere.) Super expensive DLC is sketchy, but when it's transparently just a way to tip the dev and the actual game is free - and doesn't have FOMO mechanics or anything - then that's not really doing any harm either. (I assume Steam doesn't allow links to kofi/patreon/etc so this is their only real way to get tips.) And the cute art!!! 100 Cozy Games and Anatoliy Loginovskikh are clearly putting some real love into these drawings. If these were static images on an art site we'd have zero compunction about enjoying the expressive cat faces and the Where's Wally hunt. But here they've gone above and beyond and given us a way to interact with their cat doodles, so it's even better. As long as we're coming at it from that POV (instead of a, y'know, gamer POV) I think these are great! When you finally reach the clipart space one, and the AI generated slop, _that's_ what I was expecting this category to be all about.

In some ways, inspiration/motivation/direction can come from anywhere. Even if you're not making a hidden object game, this does highlight the importance of a few things for general game design: - Strive for a readable environment. The more well received games on this list often had settings that weren't just random trash piled up to hide the objects, but rather those that created a cluttered and chaotic- yet still readable- play space. - Focus on clear objectives. If the player can't even be sure of what you want them to do, how will they be able to complete any levels/quests/tasks in your game? In this list, we can see the most direct example of the opposite of this being Anatolly's Hidden Cups game. - Also, we can learn lessons even from the bad games. Those AI-generated ones, while abysmal to look at (and I'm sure worse to actually play), do have clearer objectives than some other entries on the list. Too clear, as the game literally shows you exactly what you're looking for on the side. There is such a thing as too much hand holding.

the actual ai slop games even made me appreciate (however minimally) the first F tier game. As a mashup of clipart and photos run through a outline filter, it could still be considered a collage and took some human effort in picking and placing the images together. i almost felt bad that that had to be in the same tier as the ai trash.

I really have no idea how it took me three nights to get through bc I really enjoyed it but I feel like it's the entire "oh well I've watched like 30 games now, time for sleep" so I can't imagine how long this felt like to actually play through, but it was really fun to watch!

I dont know if the 100 ___ cats developer has implemented this but a cool idea for finishing the level would be to color in the full image then let you save it to put as a desktop background for all the cat ladies to use on their gaming PCs

Glad to see another game I played (100 hidden cats) featured in this series! I had a pretty lovely time with it when I played it (even if the last three cats really eluded me!), and was happy to see it reach A tier. I'm also inclined to check out the Kookys game because it looks super cute and also fun! I'm in need of more simple, casual games that I can just pick up and play for some minutes to unwind :3

Love that you stuck it through and managed to make a great video out of all this! Managed to actually get into the minuscule nuance of these games, admirable amount of effort considering how little was put into the games!

I don't know why, but your profile picture is somehow quite cursed to me. It's as if Frisk became an adult and got stuck in a dull 9-5 job, completely out of the whimsical and adventurous setting of the game itself.

28:15 we should probably blame Igor Shalimov; it's his art. Alexander Telminov's art in the other games is certainly more conventional xD

13:00 for this "game", not only did they take a bunch of random images, they also took a bunch of random image and then ran it through photoshop's lineart filter to make it look like a drawing, if you know how that filter looks then it's very obvious that's what they used

As someone who has a cat, the description of a head, triangle ears, tail and round body is spot on. Can't tell how many times my cat looked like a chicken when she loafs, or liquid when she melts in a box and becomes one with it. First video ive seen of yours but loving the calm but chaotic energy.

For a second, i thought you played games from the A _ Full of Cats series until i realized that you haven't hit the As yet. The 100 _ Cats games remind me of the other series except that they're shorter, bare bones, and have a crapton of DLC. The fact that some of these games have AI art isn't unsurprising but sad

i had noticed a few months ago that there were a near infinite number of hidden cat games on steam and found it strange but cute as many of the people who pumped them out seem to mainly be doing because they loved cats so much, there are games like tower of cats where the dev pictures are the cats that they have, its very sweet

It is fascinating how so many of these are cat-based. I suppose your point is true; due to cats’ liquid nature, they can be easier to hide but still be recognizable, but it is still very odd to note. Thanks for the awesome video! I can’t believe you took the time to do this lol, and it is so well-done 😁

Also cats are a pretty safe choice for the publisher, as they're the "meme" animal, one of the universally loved ones, alongside puppies.

Worst thing about 100 hidden animalnauts by far imo is that depending on your screen resolution you may be cut off from the sides and be stuck missing one achievement since the game can't be launched in windowed mode I've played pretty much every game in this series Anatoily has made, since they have a degree of variety and effort behind them that I can deeply appreciate. I avoid the 100 cozy games entries since their decision to make a banana-style clicker game didn't sit well with me (and, less importantly their HOGs are really boringly easy)

How very weird! I've seen hidden object games before (obviously) but never ones quite like these xD The extent of my hidden object game experience was briefly playing them on Facebook. And there they at least had a slight story attached (like you're a crime scene investigator looking for clues!) and were in full color. It's kinda wild you played and beat them all. Congrats. What a crazy journey you're on :D
