I read an article about this book and that same day I stood in front of my book collection for a while thinking about my kids or my partner cleaning after me. Boy, it was an eye-opener experience! I donated a lot, now I only have the books I really love to re-read. I understood nobody in my family was going to appreciate my books, so it was really therapeutic to ease their future cleaning. Now, the craft room is another thing...😭😭😭

I totally get that! Several years ago we had to deal with all the things my stepfather collected over his lifetime when he passed away. It was an overwhelming amount of things. I never want to leave that kind of burden for my family. Plus I want to enjoy life now and that means I need less things. The craft room was harder than I thought it was going to be!!! 🧶🧶🧶

Cats like boxes, and they're so much "help." My cat Daisy is 18 years old, and I seeing Pickle makes me wish I still had a young cat who can "help" me declutter. I love my old cat, but she just likes to lay around nowadays.

Well, it appears you and I are very alike. I made a 2k mile move a year ago, in doing so, i really had to really downsize. Now, a frightening thing us happening. I am crocheting a lot more than i ever did, so therefore the yarn purchases are taking over my living and breathing space. I will have to get back on board and start doing some Swedish Death Cleaning. Thank you for putting this on sm to get me and others energized

Thank you for the inspiration to continue my declutter process I’m doing at my house along with my parents home. My dad passed away last year and my mom passed away 3 years ago. The task going through your parents belongings is emotionally hard and I find the process easier just talking out loud to my mom and dad. I too have heard about the Swedish death cleaning. I always enjoy watching your videos. Thank you, Laurie (channel “Cloudy Nook Crochet)

Luckily I don’t have a clutter issue, I go through my house and purge every six months or so. I get overwhelmed easily and clutter just can’t be a part of my life. Clutter makes my life feel chaotic.

I feel your pain, satsypox. Many years ago when I was a child, pacman was all the rage, and my best friend and I were collecting pacman stickers that came in packs of gum. She got a Ms. Pacman sticker, and it was the first one we'd seen....all the rest were just the regular pacman dude. I was sooooo envious of her sticker and I wanted it sooo badly! I tried to make all kinds of trades, but she wasn't having any of it. Finally I offered to trade her my entire collection of Star Wars action figures and accessories (the original ones), and she gave in. When I think of how poor I am now and how much that collection would be worth today, I get physically sick to my stomach. (She no longer has them either, unfortunately for her; she lost them in a move many years later.) As for the sticker, I don't know if it would be considered "collectible" or not, but after receiving it I promptly stuck it in my sticker book, so it's worth zilch. So my heart goes out to you indeed, and my thoughts are with you on this next "death-cleaning" journey!

I've been really good at not buying lately. Because I'm full. I had to quit making junk journals and collage because you want to talk about a mess! People give me yarn and if it's the wrong color I've been overdyeing it. That's been fun and feels creative! I used to needle felt and I have BIG bags of roving... I think on going to look for a small table top spinning wheel. I can't bear to part with it. And will probably still needle felt from time to time. I hope you kept the magazines, if they bring you joy and inspiration and you have room you should keep them. ;) good job cleaning!

What a GREAT video!!! There is nothing more satisfying than de-cluttering and cleaning to enjoy your spaces to the fullest. I really need to go through everything again once I take down all my Christmas decorations. I am going to get that book! We have moved so much and I feel like I purge before and after each move. Often when I do my deep cleaning I put myself into “moving and staging mode” to try get things looking fresh and kind of walk through my house like someone walking through for the first time. This time when we moved I honestly had the mindset of, “If I died tomorrow, what would my family have to deal with?” I don’t want them to have to dig through piles of randomness. So glad to see you back!! ❤️

I can't relate to this at all. I need to nest. I feel safest surrounded by an organized collection of clutter. After I lost my grandparents, I found cleaning up their clutter to be really therapeutic. Reminiscing over every object regardless of its monetary value. I'm also more likely to make art if I have stuff sitting out waiting on me to use it. But respect for anyone that lives better this way. Live your best life.

Pickle is so adorable. Everyone needs a little helper like that. 🙂 You're right about momentum. I usually go through things several times before i can finally part with them. It's a process. The craft room turned out amazing. I'm a minimilist but it wasn't always so. It's taken a few years to break the cycle of buying unnecessary stuff. I've had a Jo-Ann's gift card with $60 on it for 8 months because i'm trying to use up the yarn i have. I also have a capsule wardrobe and i can't tell you how much it has changed my life.

Another fantastic video, Elise! I know it was uploaded a year ago, but it was timely for me to watch it now, seeing as how I'm finally getting ready to embark on the journey of tidying my own craft room, oh lordy. The guest bedroom doubles as the craft room, and it's a good thing I don't have any overnight guests, because they'd probably prefer to sleep on the living room couch than be surrounded by all that clutter lol. It's a project that I keep putting off because other life stuff just seems to keep getting in the way. But I know it needs to be done, and I know just how good it will feel to have it done. I've already gone ahead and tidied other areas of the house that were easier to tackle, leaving that room for last, and that already feels awesome to have those areas clutter-free. But the craft room, OMG....that's gonna take me days, if not weeks! to organize. Your video was just the inspiration I needed to finally get started, so a belated thanks for uploading it!

Happy New Year, Elise! I hope your family holiday time was enjoyable. I LOVE this timely video! I have been decluttering for months now, little bit by little bit. I turn 80 in September, and am aware of my mortality. So, I want my living space to be easy for my daughter and her family to handle when I do pass. Thank goodness, I’m in reasonably good health, so I don’t plan to “leave” in the near future! I LOVE how you look in the video! You’re a beautiful soul, a beautiful woman, with or without makeup. Your glasses enhance your obvious intelligence! I also love how you admit your “packrat” nature! I think many of us share that with one another. Pickle! Pickle! Pickle! What a sweetie! And SO HELPFUL! (Tongue in cheek here!) He’s so lucky to be in your family. My cleaning/organizing lady/friend and I washed down walls and doors in my entrance/hall, yesterday. Just one space DONE! And I’m continuing the process of decluttering (between making things like your pigs and items for my daughter’s upcoming birthday). Thank you so much for showing your way of doing this not-easy-yet-so-necessary decluttering. I’m so glad that you have one space in your house done. It will give you impetus for doing the same in other areas of your home. Blessings, Sweet Lady!

I am the daughter of an Air Force member and also the wife of an Air Force member, and I've moved a lot. One thing I learned about moving is this: As soon as you find out you're moving, declutter. Then declutter again as the time of the move gets closer. Anything you don't have to take with you is that much less weight you have to pay for or deal with. My parents moved from Georgia to Kansas in the late 1960s with an infant and a station wagon full of three older kids and enough stuff to open their own secondhand shop. Also, when the move gets close, set up a box for the first night in your new place, containing sheets and towels, some dishes, toilet paper, paper towels, light bulbs (at least one), and so forth. We moved with a cat, so our collection also contained a litter pan, kitty litter, and cat food.

It’s a easy read and was at my library. The elderly author was basically tired of dealing with everyone else’s stuff they left behind after dying. It was a burden and she didn’t want her stuff to burden others, so she downsized. Personally I think the moving technique works best for those of us less than middle aged. Either actually pack or pretend to pack the best of what you want to keep and sell or donate the rest. It really does work. I think it also helps to twice a year to have a good look around to see what needs updated or upgraded, do it and let go of the lesser grade stuff. Your daily upgraded life will be much nicer to live your best life.

Hi Dawn!! Haha!! I'm totally obsessed with the whole idea right now. I'm decluttering everything. My word for 2022 is "Simplicity" and I just want life to be more simple and that means I have to get rid of things. I'm a bit of a pack rat but it's making me bonkers now!! 😂

Hi Elise Thank you for sharing this book and this video. I definitely struggle to give things up that I say I’ll probably use later down the track or just keeping things new and not used lol 🤦🏻‍♀️ One day I try get my things into a manageable order…I do donate lots of my things but I always end up with more things than I need at any one time, like you said it’s the marketing of those big sales and I always convince myself I need it now. Anyway with the economic climate we are heading towards I think I’ll have things to use rather than buy anymore as everything is costing too much and most people are only buying what is a necessity unfortunately. I love pickles idea of helping 😂😻 Take care and stay safe. You did well! 🙏🏼💗🧶🦋😻

You had some good pronunciation (I hope I spelled it correctly) on the Swedish name, and I can say that as Im a native Swede. :D And yes, I got inspired to go home and do some cleaning and organizing now! :D

Thank you! I was afraid I butchered it! I recently found a new decluttering inspirational YT channel and she's Swedish as well. Her name is Benita Larsson. She has really inspired me as well to get rid of all the excess. ❤️

A few months ago I did a huge declutter. I needed to separate my spinning/yarn from my sewing/craft. Each now has its own seperate room 👍 I purchased an 8-cube system in kitset and when I was assembling it I noticed it was faulty 😱 (the screw holes weren’t in the correct place). As I’m a bit of a DIY’er I was able to sort it out… but it did take a few specialty tools, so I wrote to the company and hey presto I ended up getting a full refund!!!!!!!! That was my lucky day.

You can donate them to the library sometimes, then maybe you can reuse them. Also, knitting stores will take them too. Orrrr you can make a craft share library in front of your house, so others can use as they walk by, just like the kid's ones.

Thank you for sharing! I've found your video super helpful as I'm researching the Swedish Death Cleaning method AND I'm also a crafter with lots of crochet supplies. 9:58 Great job being published! Random idea: you could frame that one page to display in your craft room. It might help preserve the paper too.

Sorry, I posted too early.... lots of US mags, inc Annie's. You can get months free: when joining, recommendation. Check local conditions though. the sub can be shared by other family members for no extra cost. They have there own profiles and on favourites, so no need to wade through things you're not interestd in. Take a look and let me know what you think.. US cost $9.99 - that's easily covered by not buying 1 or 2 mags a month, don't you think!

Lovely video, Pickle was very funny.....I have just done a mass declutter as we moved house a few months ago....had to tackle the 20 years of accumulated items in the loft.....it was very therapeutic......and I sorted out all my yarn and fabric as well.....x

Sounds wonderful, Natalie! I feel a little overwhelmed right now but I know that it will happen little by little. It's not something I can do all in one weekend. I was very surprised that it took me three days to do my craft room! But I'm ready to start letting go, I don't need all this stuff anymore! ❤️

Check out Dana K. White…she is very relatable and her decluttering method is life-changing! She has three books and her newest one is amazing-it’s called “Organizing for the Rest of Us.” I have used her method, Joshua Becker’s, the minimal mom, and clutterbug…I have purged and simplified so much; the crafts were easier than I thought they would be!

@@EliseRoseCrochet AWESOME! My hubby is a Butterfly(visual/macro) 🦋 and I'm a Bee(visual/micro) 🐝. If you don't mind my input... You may want to invest in clear or wire see-through containers instead of the cloth baskets/bins you are using. Being able to SEE what is in them may make it easier for you to keep things tidy and put things away. That's been a game changer for both of us. Cas also suggests labels if you don't do clear containers. Also, my hubby butterfly LOVEs to roll his clothing rather than fold. This was a Clutterbug tip for macro organizers. That might work for the fabric or other things you have to stand it on end and you can see all of it when you pull out the container. I hope this isn't too much input. I love your space! 🦋
