Polygamy is a practice that many cultures in the past and present still practice. The ancient Israelites practiced polygamy as a way to increase their populations at a faster rate and thus have more men for their armies. They did this by marrying virgin prisoners of war, young slave girls from different nations, and of course marrying multiple women from their tribe. The bible makes no comment about it being a sin, but it is a practice that is frown upon today. I personally see no problem with it between consenting adults. However in a religious setting, with strict gender roles the relationship dynamics can be one sided and only benefit the husband. There is also the slippery slope towards child brides. A serious problem that happens in the USA.

@@faithhouse6111 I'm so glad to run across your comment on polygamy. I see clearly how Mark 10:10-12 and Luke 16:18 prove that polygamy is, for Christians, adultery. The "first wife" is scripturally free to leave her polygamous husband, divorce him, and marry another man. The man who marries this divorced woman does not commit adultery. The polygamous husband committed adultery when he took a second wife, and his adultery freed his first wife from the marital bond with him.

While I am not a polyganist, I am on the fence as to the Bible’s either support or condemnation or even indifference to it. A few comments about the video. I think sometimes we can read INTO the text because it supports an already preconceived idea that we already have on a subject from either upbringing or theological positions on a subject before we give another stance a fair observation. Just to reflect on some of the comments of brother “flame”, I think it is an assumption (unless he has made the necessary study) to suggest polygany is a disaster waiting to happen because look how it unfolds in scripture. His reference to Abraham, and David is noted but it starts to break down when he gets to Solomon because Solomons use of “it’s all vanity” was regards to the things of life chasing the world and the things in it. But he does not mention (if I’m not mistaken) marriage nor polygany specifically nor even hints at it, to drawn brother flames conclusion. Also, besides the popular three i.e. Abraham, David, and Solomon, the Bible mentions several other polyganist relationships e.g. Caleb, Belshazzar, Asher, Gideon, Jacob, Moses, etc… were all mentioned in scripture to having more than one wife, so one would have to speak to what does scripture speak of the success or failure of their marriages, and just because the popular ones failed to assume the others did is a fallacy and a reading into the text. Another point, is that arguably the scripture is heavily about relationship and marriage and union, and so to suggest that God is against polygyny without expressly stating such when scripture is so heavily geared to something so much as relationship, marriage, union, etc… is I think without merit and foundation. Man as a whole is sinful and everything he touches fails, including relationship with God, so one could then argue, following flames idea to its logical conclusion that God should be against seeking Him out because even when we do, it fails and fails miserably. But no one suggests such because God is the one who gives grace and mercy and truth to bring us to a point of salvation and in its right and correct manner, and so the same could be argued about polygyny that, yes when man, puts his hand in it, it is destined to fail, but with Christ, All things are possible”, so success in polygany can be successful if done in Him and not the worlds way. Also. Brother “Da Truth” I think spoke on the Two shall be one, etc… pointing to “oneness” and it was Adam and Eve etc… I think this two of followed to its logical conclusion may be flawed thinking. Example the trinity is thee persons, but yet they are one, the church is the bride of Christ and MANY PERSONS make up the church, but they are called to be ONE, and a host of other examples of relationship, marriage, etc… that have numbers but yet are still called to be one, and so polygyny although multiple persons can be argued still called and expected to be “ONE”. I just wanted to join the conversation and give some alternative views and perspective to truly have a dialogue on an important topic that actually seems to be gaining ground and momentum in the black community. May the Lord bless and continue to guide us in Jesus name. Amen!

Especially since most people who read the Bible are already Believers and already have the understanding that as they read God is already present leading them so you sound like you're correcting them with information that they're already using but getting different results than what you desire. Next it seems like you're dismissing the skill and ability that humans were given from God which is to think and comprehend I know be very confusing indoctrination and sermons that Pastor gives that contradict each other as well as go against the possible practical way we do things and make people feel insufficient with the skills that are really human ability by giving a standard of extra spiritualism Always setting the bar high so you never really questioned God but you question your own ability it's a trick.

Instead of asking if Polygeny is a sin, I wish our people would start asking themselves why does God allow Polygeny. Why is it lawful? Do you not understand that the laws of God are the constitution and bill of rights for the Kingdom of Israel? This is what they govern themselves by. This is what God govern them by. He has never allowed them to sin! Neither has he had laws of sin written by his righteousness. No one is forced to marry or not marry. You have the free will to marry how you please. God will judge all things by his word/law. But please stop saying women who choose to marry one man are sinning. Or a man who has more than one wife is sinning. Stop trying to seperate Christ from the father. They are 1. That is either ignorant or evil to think or say such a thing! You are calling God the minister of sin! Please Stop judging by your religion and see God's righteousness. God allows Polygeny because he is against sin. He gave Polygeny/marital law to put away all manner of fornication (1 Corinthians 6:18). To put away whoredom (using women as one does a whore) from among the children of God (Deuteronomy 23:17). To put away all manner of sexual immorality (Exodus 22, Leviticus 21, & Deuteronomy 22). To keep confusion from among his people by keeping a man's children and the women thereof under one headship (1 Timothy 5:8, Proverbs 22:6 Deuteronomy 11:16-19, & 1 Timothy 3:5). To keep a woman that desires to wear a man's masculinity, sexuality, and headship from among the children of God/vice versa (Proverbs31:3, Deuteronomy 22:5, Leviticus 18:22, Romans 1:24-32, 1 Corinthians 11:3), and the list goes on family. I ask you all, when did that change? The law is righteous and will always be righteous. Your unrighteousness doesn't change that. In fact, it's why you must die. God made marriage the rule of Law in all the earth (Genesis,1 , 2, 9, Psalm 24:1, etc). Polygeny is marriage, and marriage is honorable in all (Hebrews 13:4). Even if you were taken as a servant wife God still honors you (Exodus 20:10 & Exodus 21:7-10). A restriction given to a Bishop or Deacon is not an implication of sin. Just as there is law specific to women and some specific to men. Their is law specific to a King and some for a prophet. If you do not hold these positions/work in your lifetime, these laws do not apply to you. Concerning Deuteronomy 17:14-20 this is law pertaining to Kings, not to all men. We live in a nation where most men live by its culture, customs, and laws instead of the word/law of God (Matthew 4:4, Matthew 15:3, Acts 5:29, etc..). What they practice here is fornication and is ungodly (Revelation 21:18). Polygeny can never be a sin, because by God's decree: sin is the disobedience to the laws of God (1 John 3:4). They cannot grasp this because they do not understand the Kingdom (Matthew 13:11) because they have no respect/honor for the laws of God. For the constitution, the bills if rights, the civil and moral laws given to Israel. Even the penal codes thereof. They only know a democracy, a republic, communism, socialism, etc... What they can vote in and out. Some man-made stuff. They do not know or honor the Kingdom of God is the government setup over heaven and earth ( Isaiah 9:9, Matthew 3:2, Luke 10:9, Matthew 7:24-25). They lack knowledge that all the word/decrees of the King is law and is lawful (Deuteronomy 8:3, Psalm 119:89, Matthew 24:35). They lack this understanding to be able to apply or divide the word of God rightly. As for divorce, Christ in Matthew 19 said it best: In the beginning, it wasn't so. The beginning being "Genesis." No man in the bloodline of Christ in Genesis divorced his wife or wives. God didn't give Adam another wife. Jacob endured his son laying with one of his wives and kept them both among him. Abraham was told by God to move out the bond woman and his son by God. He didn't choose to. No one ever put away their wives lawfully until the law of Moses. This is what it means when said but Moses. Before the law of Moses, divorce was never lawful for the lineage nor the children of Israel. You never see it throughout time until God allows Moses to give it. That's when it becomes lawful. This is what Christ is saying. He's dealing with divorce. It's not Christians who are confused. It's all men who do not understand that which Christ has preached throughout his whole ministry was purely the word of God. The main thing and focus of his message, is "The Kingdom" Which he mentions over a 100 times throughout his gospels. These men and women are of this world and worldly minded. Ever learning but unable to come to the truth of God (2 Timothy 3:7). Still focused on the intent of God and never moving with God into the purpose of man (Ecclesiastes 12:13 & 1 John 5:3). Allowing sin to rule the day instead of his son. Christ gives God what he intended to get out of mankind. If God could get the perfection he desires out of the children of Adam, he would not have sent another. Be wise family and let God be true & every man a liar.

We do a good job of putting our own souls in jeopardy, even though we've heard Adam's tale our most our whole lives. Why do [we] still sin? Adam and Eve showed what a desire put above/before God does to us all. Eve went after her own, and Adam after his; "which happen to be his wife" that God gave him. He desired his dying mortal wife, more than the eternal living God. This has nothing to do with the issue of is bigamy a SIN. A sin... I think too much of anything will corrupt any man, but I will only call to sin that which God has called sin. Bigamy is NOT one of them. This has nothing to do with a man's lust, greed, or lack of commitment. We can visit those issues separately in monogamy and bigamy on another feed for them. This is just the question of should we call something a sin, that GOD Never does. That God participates in, and teaches how to govern it. Is it his perfect will? I dont think so. But it is in his permissive will? All through scripture, and NOT once does he call it Sin. So I will always stick to the word of God, and never my own thought, emotions or feelings. In short, it is not a sin. Afterall, it's a reason Paul had to tell the MEN who wanted to become Bishops and Deacons to be the husbands of One wife...if it wasn't permissible, why would there be a distinction? However, if you're seeking peace - even one wife can be one woman too many! Remember, Paul also said that if you're married - don't seek to be single, and if you're single - don't seek to be married; the reason being that pining over your life in a different status becomes a distraction from your current relationship with The Father, especially single men. Married men have the burden of always having to cater to the ever-growing needs of their wives (and children), and this is a lifelong struggle in keeping both relationships cultivated - mainly when the wife isn't godly. Then the husband wakes up everyday trying to figure out what will keep his wife off of his back, instead of waking up asking how he can please YHWH that day. Women represent the souls of mankind, which can be very much in tune with "what have you done for me lately," if not in proper alignment with and in submission to the Spirit - which men represent; fyi, children represent the flesh. Also, the host in this video said that Bathsheba was raped...that is false!

As I mentioned initially, this poor panel is scripturally illiterate on the polygyny topic, and are simply parroting someone else’s opinion on the matter. I’d suggest that you may wanna actually study it out for yourself, being careful of confirmation biases and cultural biases. I can say for a fact that monogamy was foreign to early Christianity until Tertullian around 200-220 AD, and he was speaking from a grossly minority position criticizing the bishop of bishops for supporting “multi-nuptials”. He claimed that his revelation of monogamy was a new revelation to him by the Holy Spirit. Roman Catholicism gradually twisted arms until they outlawed poly in the Middle Ages. Martin Luther, Augustine, Clement of Alexandria and many others affirmed its acceptance in Scripture. Christ used it in parables comparing it to the kingdom of heaven, and Paul used it several times to explain the bride of Christ. God the Father used it at least 3 times in scripture to portray his relationship to Israel, and said that He was the one who’d given David all his wives, and said he’d have given him more if that weren’t enough, right before he condemned Davids adultery. As to the panelist’s claims of issues and troubles within polygamous families in scripture, this is a patently disingenuous argument. You could apply everything he claimed and more against monogamous families in scripture, but no one bothers to apply the argument evenly. Also, when there was an issue, I think its a more accurate approach to say that it was a personal problem, both with men and women who didnt operate correctly in their God given role. Thats not a mono or poly marriage problem, thats a fruit of the spirit problem. And I could go on for quite some time on the topic, both scripturally and historically, but you’d be better served to research it yourself.

4:07 this argument that biblical polygyny always leads to trouble is probably one of the worst arguments against it. If it is so bad and troublesome why did God reward people for it and cause it to happen as a gift (2 Sam 12:8, Gen. 30:18). Sounds like polygyny does screw up, people screw up and the people screwing up polygyny probably would’ve found a way to screw up monogamy. And then it seems as if whenever polygyny is discussed, people always want to first focus on the sexual aspect of polygyny, which, in turn, causes the stigma of men only wanting polygyny out of lust to be invoked, and its really immature.

Hmmmmmm. A few things about the responses to the question of polygamy. First off Paul stated that in his opinion men shouldn’t marry at all because the women is a distraction. And yes , because of the Distraction the women created it isn’t wise for men in LEADERSHIP. To take on multiple wives. The scriptures all also points out the teacher and leaders will be held to a higher standard, so there is Consistency there. But for the layman, there no law against Polygamy. In fact, according to Christians there’s no law at all. Of course, we all know that isn’t true. Also, can we name any patriarch in Scripture with one wife ,and that wife didn’t give him trouble ? Think about is . Adam only had one wife. After the fall, Yah placed a curse on Eve and all her daughters that men would rule over them. Ever consider this maybe part of that curse? I could go on ....

there are sufficient loopholes in the bible for anyone to deceive themselves if they so choose to operate on technicalities, but it's clear the bible does not endorse polygamy for those seeking righteousness: (1) as mentioned in the video, genesis 1 and 2 make God's original intention pretty clear. this is always the template that should inform our relationships. (2) "how do you know the curse doesn't include allowing men to have multiple wives?". well, for starters, bc it doesn't say that it does. do you see evidence in scripture that suggests God ordained this as a part of the curse? (3) paul speaks in several places about his sexual ethics. he was writing during the roman empire when women had no rights and roman men could have sex at any time with anyone: slaves, women and boys. it was pretty radical at this time to return to the story of creation/God's intent and to make the claim the husband's body belongs to his wife (singular). (4) he also said in corinthians let every woman have her own husband. it ain't yours if you sharing. (5) it's no coincidence that Jesus uses marriage to describe his relationship with the church. a marriage that on several occasions is described as having one woman and one man. on a practical level, most brothas are barely managing the one woman (and kids) they have. seems unfeasible, outside of sex, to be a godly husband to multiple wives.

Just got recommended to watch this channel, in the beginning I think they were on the right track. I also think following the man’s point on everything preceding Genesis 3 (the fall of man) is what God saw and made as perfect, as is clearly told in Genesis 1:31 “And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good”. This was right after He says how he made man and woman in his image and that he created them.
@Papasquatch732 жыл бұрын
At 5:56 he talked about Jesus and the bride being one person as an example. No. It’s a bad argument. It’s mini individuals making up one family. That is a view of polygamy. She said descriptive versus prescriptive. God said to David I gave you these wives and if you would have asked I would have given you more. That’s not prescriptive or descriptive. That is God entering into polygamy. That’s not God tolerating polygamy that’s God actually giving into polygamy. How do you not see that?

Everyone can easily come up with an argument as to why you should only have one wife. But if someone actually made the effort there are many arguments as to why having one wife is acceptable if you were given the means to provide for them and the family you would create. 2 Samuel 12:18 says “I gave your master's house to you, and your master's wives into your arms. I gave you all Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more” The above is from God to David. I suppose we see things and infer things dependent on the culture we are from. I’m African, and growing up it was common to see men with multiple wives in church. My grandfather was a committed Baptist and a farmer. He had two wives. My uncle is also a committed church goer with three wives. With respect to Paul saying a Bishop or Elder should be the husband of one wife, could it be that there were those in church with more than one wife? If that is so why did Paul not directly condemn the practice. Personally I wouldn’t go down the route of polygamy, and I’ve been happily married for 33 years (yes, I’m an older guy😊) I think I’d agree with one of the panelist who suggests it’s a disputable matter.

Wow, to say that King David raped Bathsheba is a little irresponsible. The Bible never states that he forced himself on her. The woman on this discussion panel took that verse way out of context. Because there's other examples of men raping women in the scriptures and being punished for the act. King David wasn't punished for raping Bathsheba, he was punished for killing her husband in order to take her as a wide. And with that said, I believe it's more acceptable for a man to have multiple wives than it is for a woman to teach.

And the most important part of this question is that the number of wives or concubines they had didn't affect their relationship with God, and God didn't reject them because they have concubines, moreso we need to understand the user of the word concubine in the scriptural context "concubine those days does not mean exter-marital affairs but women they offered to them on marriage most of them are their wives slaves which they made those kings marry for reasons best known to them... Just like the days of Jacob.... From what I have observed being from Africa where we have this issue in higher rate... Some men are just destined to marry more than a woman and that the fact.

It's still tou getting more than a wife, what is important is that we continue to grow in our relationship with God, put Isaiah chapter 3 and 4 into consideration. Study the chapters and mirror it with how a lot of us don't accept what God has decided and it's a shame that even the church of God is battling this, read these chapters from message or GNB and understand what God was complaining about in there and look around if those things ain't in full manifestation in our midst and even glorified by the church yet we don't want the consequences. The Bible never speaks of polygamy in any positive way, but specifically and purposely paints it in a negative light at every point, although it was culturally normative in many respects for the wealthy. Going back to Gen 4:23 Lamech a descendant of Cain arrogance as a polygamist is striking. We are introduced to another Lamech in the line of Seth in Gen 5:29 who has a son who is presented in the text as righteous and not coincidental, Noah is a monogamist along with his 3 sons(Shem, Ham, Jay). In the middle of these two intros is the infamous Gen 6 which i jokingly call "Earth Girls are Easy" . Much debate on the identity of the Sons of God and nephilim(Giants/Fallen). The text clearly states the direction of YHWH ire in the matter is only with man! Not angels, but man, not demigods or titians, man. Only mankind is the issue! Unlike Gen 3 where the serpent(the shining one) and man(Adam/Eve) ALL GET THAT WORK! If the Sons of God are angles why is the text absent angelic punishment in Gen 6? Therefore the "sons of God" are simply men, perhaps kingly men or godly king men who were more interested in being the Cheieftans of "pound town" than the priestly reps of God on Earth. The story therefore is a polemic against "polygamy" and how society further devolves into sin via this lustful and arrogant practice. These accounts makes the reader ponder the juxtaposition of polygamy and monogamy and its affect on society. Specific examples will be unfolded later in Genesis w/ the tryst of Abraham, Sarah, Hagar and Jacob, Leah, Rachel and on and on. The polemics continue with David and Solomon both, godly king reps. At some point it becomes about laying hands on the Thicc and not the sick. My $.02

God made it clear in scripture that adultery is sin, a man and woman become 1 flesh in marriage, and that a king is not to have multiple wives becuz his heart will be led astray from God. That's exactly what happened to Solomon. His heart left God and it led to his downfall as Israel's king. David's affair with Bathsheba had deadly consequences, and he had consequences of having multiple children with different wives. One son attempted to kill him and take his throne. Plus, there was turmoil among his other children where one son raped his half sister. That led to murder. Some of Israel's fiercest enemies were descendants of illegitimate children with other women some men had actually. So biblically, the consequences of such behavior is all over scripture. From a societal/cultural standpoint in those times, it was custom for any king to be permitted to have multiple wives. @@massamakossikatabale1610 Incorrect. The bible records that John the Baptist rebuked Herod for taking his brothers wife, Herodias, which was adultery. And I believe 1 of Davids wives passed away. This was all part of what led to their downfall. Death of a spouse permits remarriage biblically. John rebuking Herod led to John's death. Jesus himself said that if ANY man divorces or puts away his wife and marries another is guilty of Adultery. Like I said, in eastern culture or society, KINGS were allowed by the PEOPLE to take more than 1 wife at a time. But God never APPROVED it for the jews. And sure, scripture does not record every punishment or instance when one was dealt with for sin. YESHUA makes it very clear. Gods intention for marriage was for 1 man and 1 woman to become 1 flesh. Jesus referenced that in the gospels. You are in sin if you divorce and marry another woman. Adultery is sin outside your marriage covenant. Israel failed to keep the law completely as I stated before HENCE the exceptions and seemingly contradictions. Let's emphasize first the answer to the question: NO it's not a sin and never described as sin and God gave a man multiple wives AND God has two wives AND Jesus has a relationship with each individual person and SAVES us each. Western Greco-Roman culture teaches monogamy and Western Christianity ascribes this to Christ but Christ never prescribed marriage. Let no man tear asunder is actually a divorce teaching NOT a marriage teaching.

It should be obvious to even the most amateur observer,, that monogamy does not come natural to the human species (although there are a few animals species on this planet, where monogamy does come naturally. But human beings aren’t one of them). Although Long-term pair bonding does occur within the human species. it doesn’t necessarily mean,, monogamy. Down through human history, diverse cultures throughout the world practiced different relationship styles. Including polygyny, polyandry, polygamy, polyamory/ethical non-monogamy. Where there is consent there is no cheating. Legal government/state controlled or religious controlled or mandated Marriage,, is a made-up concept. It does not exist in nature. But as I mentioned,, pair bonding does comes natural to the human species

@Lisa Fields. First of all David did not rape Bathsheba. Not sure where you learned that. As for the multiple wives there is a law in Exodus 21 that allowed the Israelites to have multiple wives only upon certain conditions. Maybe some christians are unaware of the strong proclamations of Christian beliefs and Foundation and that will explain them not understanding why when people read the Bible they're taking it literally as it spoke rather than look for eclectic and Mystic ways to understand what they're reading such as the way preachers say which is bending towards God way of thinking and not your own..... do they understand how they made a statement without giving any explanation or understanding of what is possible about there advice or what is coherent? Especially since most people who read the Bible are already Believers and already have the understanding that as they read God is already present leading them so preachers sound like there correcting them with information that believers already using but getting different results than what the preacher desire. Next it seems like there dismissing the skill and ability that humans were given from God which is to think and comprehend. I know there are very confusing indoctrination and sermons that Pastor gives that contradict each other as well as go against the possible practical way we do things and make people feel insufficient with the skills that are really human ability by giving a standard of extra spiritualism Always setting the bar high so you never really questioned God but you question your own ability it's a trick.... SO IS HAVING MULTIPLE MARRIAGES SIMULTANEOUSLY A SIN YES OR NO....IS THIS ANSWER STATED CLEARLY IN BIBLE WITHOUT ANY INTERPRETATION???? Yes this direct answer does matter no we are not wrong or misunderstanding or off focus because we ask this question and for demanding a unified undeniable evidently answer...for the sake of knowing god stands on this in every culture in every position in time. Of the world since the proclamation is the Bible is useful and purposeful in our lives as well as the standard for what we are to do and always has been... most Christians response to difficult question is them feeling as if they have to show us teach us and explains us how our focus and how our thinking is off... it's a trick cuz they know most Christians already go by the principle and understanding that God is in Authority always perfect we're imperfect (made to always think humble and less of them selfs especially compared to bible) we have to catch up so anytime there's a misunderstanding or something or something is seen as wrong and morally evil in the Bible or a lack of proper guidance from the Bible, that person indoctrinated and manipulated to see themself at fault it is a trick!

The greatest example we should follow is the one God gives us in Genesis when He create A man and gives him A wife as a suitable helper. One of the biggest mistakes we can make is to base our theological views and lives off of the example given by other fallible men and women in the Bible. We must remember that everyone in the Bible with the exception of Jesus are sinful and imperfect people. Jesus is the standard for holiness. Even when Paul is instructing those who were married he commanded the man to love his wife in the same way Christ loved the church who died for the church. Referring to 1 single wife not many. Also in the NT the apostle Paul gives requirements for leadership roles and one of the requirements were a husband of one wife. Not only highlighting the leadership role of a man in the relationship, but also highlighting the healthy construct of marriage which is between 1 man and 1 women.

If marriage represents Christ’s relationship with the church, don’t you think we should know what the biblical definition of marriage is? Most of us obviously know that marriage is between a man and a woman, but did you know that marriage to a divorced woman is adultery? Nothing can turn a relationship that a divorced woman gets into while her husband is living; into a true, God defined marriage. She remains in adultery as long as she remains in a sexual/emotional relationship with another man besides her living, covenant husband. On the other hand, a man who is divorced because of his wife’s persistent sexual immorality is free to marry another woman. Do you know why this is? It’s because a God defined marriage can be a man who has one wife or multiple wives. If a man who is divorced because of his wife’s sexual immorality marries another woman, that doesn’t mean he is not still married to his first wife; that does not mean that the first wife cannot return to him if she comes to repentance. A man taking another wife after he is divorced for legitimate reasons, does not close the door to reconciliation with his first wife. If you believe differently, I ask you, for the sake of the glory of God, to present evidence from the Bible to support your claim. And if you do agree, please share what you are doing about it.

When God brought Eve to Adam, they were united in marriage: the “woman” in Genesis 2:22 is called Adam’s “wife” in verse 24. The pattern for marriage, the first social institution, was thus established by God in Eden. The manner of Eve’s creation is “why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.” The unity of a married couple and the “one flesh” principle are based on the fact that God used one of Adam’s ribs to make the woman. God’s use of one of Adam’s ribs to make Eve is a reminder that woman was created to be “beside” man. Together, the man and woman complement one another in marriage, and in Christ they are “heirs together of the grace of life” (1 Peter 3:7, NKJV).
