The Flute Center of New York sent me 2 beautiful Powell hand-cut 14K rose gold headjoints to compare the cut of their lip plates. One headjoint has the Lumina cut, the other has the Philharmonic cut.
I compared them both on the same gorgeous Powell handmade 14K rose gold flute.
Wow! What a huge difference between them! Their sound was clearly different. But what was instantly noticeable and distinctly different was their responsiveness and resistance.

I recently purchased a new head joint for my professional.014 Sterling Flute,14k lip plate,riser and fused 10k interior. The difference is quite notable,and fits my playing I would say 30% better as far as harmonics,color and response than the original that came with my flute.Ive had this flute as my primary since 1998,and this change has ,to my ears,improved the sound and response tremendously. Thanks for posting this video,many flutist never explore the potential of their instrument . 💖🎼

I had an Aurumite with a Philharmonic head joint. Then Powell send the me a Venti to try. I didn’t like it as much. A few months later Powell sent me the Soloist cut. It was the best for me. Very deep and dark. I am selling that flute now. Powell gave their customers a year to try and switch head joints if they wanted. This was back in 2006. I’m not sure if they to this anymore. It was at no cost. I hope you get to try a Soloist head joint one day!

I absolutely liked the philharmonic cut for you. I’ve been playing on one for about a year. Took awhile for the real love, but worth the extra effort to get there. Lots more colour available!

Great! So when you picked out yours did you like it the best or you heard the potential?

@@DoctorFlute There seemed to be more depth of tone…core sound was great. Like the old time Haynes and Powells. I loved it first, then as I worked with it, went back and forth a bit. I’m working on not forcing it. Experimenting with different colours. Worth taking the time!

To answer the question. I will never know, I cant afford either. ☺ They both sound beautiful on here, I like some resistance too it give me a lot more feedback and a bit darker tone. Very interesting video and comparison of two great head joints 2x👍

Obviously the headjoint your best at is the philharmonic cut. Not only does it require a warmed up embouchure, but also requires more support to play.
