That depend on your skill : for the student, any piece of gold, even the entire flute, is just a loss of money. But for a professional I think it is great. There is a lot of parameters in a flute that are most important than the material, but if you find an excellent flute and if you master your mouthpiece, gold bring a nice darker sound.

I'm a retired gigging keyboard player (plus flautist as a hobby) living in Yorkshire England. One day, I was booked to play in Manchester with a band for a night of music for dancing. The line up was a five piece with front line of sax doubling flute. So I introduce myself, and the sax player is called George, who is assembling his instruments. I could help noticing that the flute he was assembling wasn't the norm silver/chrome coloured variety. I asked George was that what I thought it was.....a gold flute? Sure he replied in a very strong Irish accent. (Hmmmm I thought, there's something very special about this event.....) I mentioned that I played, and George offered me a play. Well, I tried, I puffed this way and that way, and barely made a noise. The lip plate was custom made. George asked what did I think? I replied that I could tell that it was superb, but I was struggling. Ahh says George, that's because it was made for my brother. Who's your brother, I asked. Oh, he's called James. James who? Galway!! *&*&%^&^%$%^£$"£ JAMES GALWAY???? Yes!! So you're George Galway! I sure am. James gave me the flute as he had too many. The gig was amazing. George was a supreme jazzer. He made his flute sing the jazz exactly how I loved it to be played. So for approximately two minutes, I actually played one of James Galway's Golden Flutes, created especially for him in Switzerland, and I failed. But I was there. I was that man.

What a fun event! I've only ever tried gold flutes at flute festivals. They are wonderful but then I remind myself that I just play in community bands so a gold flute might be a bit much for that setting and I have two kids to eventually put through college. So maybe just a gold headjoint some day in the very distant future.
@flutechannel

Totally but it is really fun just to try. Gold headjoints are a great alternative too. They have loads. We have to do a video about headjoints soon. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment Erin!

Agreed, trying out various flutes is fun even if you have no intention of buying. A headjoint video would be awesome! I'll probably watch this video another time or two, I think you guys did an excellent job of condensing down a 2 day event into an 11 minute video.

Try a gold/rose gold plated Lefreque (or 2). I have 2 of the 33mm solid silver rose gold plated Lefreques on my Azumi and I feel they really do make a difference. The flute is heavier with them but the gold adds a nice warmth and texture vs without them.

This just puts things in perspective about how some local music stores in my country are quite apprehensive about letting you try the _expensive_ bass guitars, pianos or effects pedals. If only they knew that a thousand miles from us there’s an 18K Gold Flute available to try out, with which you could buy the music shop, the instruments and perhaps even the clerk. Oh Gee, I better go drink some water to rinse my saltiness 😆

Gorgeous instrument. I'm kind of a "hobbyist" when it comes to playing flute now. I played flute from the 4th grade through my senior year of high school. Now I just play it when I'm in the mood. I started off on a Haynes student flute that I rented from my high school which they later let me purchase for $100. I tried to get it fixed a back then, but it was never the same after that. When I moved out into the working world, I managed to buy myself an Armstrong (my first and only open-hole). It's beautiful to look at, but I'm afraid to play it. LOL! And now you show me this 18K beast of a flute. WOW! Beautiful craftsmanship. :)

Yep, I know what you mean. One of the ladies in our Symphony has a gold Brannen with a platinum custom head (can't remember the maker, but it suits her really well). I admit to coveting it every rehearsal. :) Boy, those gold flutes are HEAVY, though! I play a silver Muramatsu, and I swear mine is half the weight of hers. SD is beautiful this time of year, it finally stopped snowing :) Have you ever been? Mt. Rushmore is about 30 min. from where I live, and I've been there twice...maybe. No, make it three times, they used to have fireworks there for the 4th of July. Although I think City Band is going to play a 4th of July there this year.

I play on a Powell myself (a Powell Signature to be exact with a C# trill key) and they are generally very heavy flutes. I tried a Muramatsu GX that a friend of mine has and I was surprised how light it was compared to my Powell that is a standard wall .016” flute. One day I’ll try this one out! I don’t think I’ll go for an all gold flute though.

If I ever won the lottery I'd definitely go flute shopping. I really only need one, but whats great about gold and platinum is that they don't tarnish as quickly as silver. Platinum being the least likely to tarnish and if it does I wouldn't be around to see it when or if it happens, I think platinum is more likely to get scratches, but not at the same extent as silver or gold due to Mohs hardness scale rating. 18 k still has impurities so it would change color probably after I'm dead. I've heard of gold coins doing this due to copper content. Not sure if that's the case with these flutes. I didn't look into the content. The most I'm willing to spend on a new flute after I master my beginner flute is $2800 USD. So ya, unless you won some kind of lotto these flutes are a dream for most people. I think though the best way to appreciate a gold or platinum flute would to already own and practice on other less expensive professional flutes. I love watching vids like this though.

it is beautiful to look at and it sounds good, but if it is heavy then it is meaningless for me even if it is given for free. except to sell away. :) i get very easily tired when i play flute because i have rather short arms and weak arm muscles so...😔 the best thing i liked when i changed from nickel to silver flute was that it was lighter. i could play longer without sore arms.😀🎶 also it is more difficult to stably balance the flute if it is heavier. especially when i play with all the holes open except left thumb down closing, trills, etc. plastic flute just lacks the vibration in the sound. the very original instrument was made of wood until 18th century, so i expect someday in the future something better than metal would come up, like cheap industrial diamond✨💎✨ or something like that, solid and very light and resonating amazingly at the same time...🌈 i mean 30 years ago no one imagined using smart phones would be so ordinary... so "diamond" flutes might be in near future. carbonfibers. glassfibers. some element very new. might be even gas.😝

I have a flute and I just bought a piccolo (in this sort of "plastic") and I play in a music school in France and I find it very expensive... for 1 year I pay just a little bit less than the price of the flute or the piccolo... it's sad, cause not everybody can learn to play an instrument...

For us hobby players this flute is too expensive. I am quite happy with my gemeinhardt intermediate flute. Professionals can justify these prices.

For sure Noellana but its interesting to see what is happening with flutemaking nowadays so many companies are doing cool things with different techniques and materials. What a time to be alive! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!

A gold flute sounds great for some, but it's not for me.

I like the warmth of a gold flute but also just love the crispness behind a silver flute so my Gemeinhardt is silver with a gold lip plate. I love it. I've heard people say that gold flutes love second flute parts because of the deep warmth. I really like first flute parts. I just feel at ease with first flute parts. So I don't know if a fully golden flute would be a solid fit for me anyways.

the flute is an acquired taste, but i encourage you to learn whatever you want to learn. Considering my preference... I cant even comprehend hating playing the flute, but at the start it is sometimes frustrating, but I would never stop. It is so diverse yet simple... and I couldn't ever say anything bad about it. Its beauty is unmatched. Its addicting!

It's not too late to switch or learn it for fun. Life is too short to do something that you don't enjoy. If you haven't done so already check out Christopher Bill's youtube channel. He does great covers on trombone.

When I started playing in band in the 6th grade the director wanted me to play flute. He said because my mother was a music teacher and flute is a hard instrument I would get extra help learning it. He was correct about that but now that I am a bit older (about 60 years older!) and more realistic, I wonder if he really needed someone to play flute in the beginner band! I was the only flutist for a year! There were 42 flutists at the first state wide band clinic I went to. I was the only boy!
