If Ronaldo scores, commentators, fans and pundits will usually discredit the goal by either calling it a tap in or saying the defending/goalkeeping was bad... also I’ve seen on forums like reddit if Ronaldo plays AMAZING in a game. Half the comments are about how they are lucky to see Messi and Ronaldo play football...WHAT did messi do to warrant that praise ? Just because Messi goes drops back to touch the ball doesn’t mean he doesn’t go missing. You could touch the ball 1000 times but if you don’t do anything when you have it you ghosted. Point is, in the UCL Messi has been ghosting since 2015. CR7 has done the exact opposite. He has won it 4 times since 2014. And he is by far the best champions league player of all time, he owns 90% of the records in the competition. The standard of criticism is not the same. Messi can have a bad game and they say well he can’t always carry the team, but when Ronaldo has a bad game in the UCL, the destroy him for it, (go on to make absurd statements like he has lost a step, he can’t do it anymore, etc). Ronaldo and Messi are in such a similar situation the last two seasons with Juventus and Barcelona. Both are players playing for clubs in pitiful states, yet despite that still performing well (both Ronaldo and Messi are top scorers in their leagues). However they blame the club when Barcelona struggles but when Juventus struggles they blame Ronaldo. And in my opinion neither of them should really be criticized.
