There is another missing fight scene I remember in Bruce Lee's movies. . I am someone who saw Enter the Dragon in Korean theaters during its release in 1973. During the scene where a fight breaks out in a courtyard and Han, the villain, tries to escape, Bruce Lee chases after him. Then there is a moment when one of Han's man tries to block Bruce Lee's path after he climbs up onto a wall, but Bruce Lee delivers 3~4 rapid punches to subdue him. Let me describe The speed of the punches, it was so unbelievably fast that it seemed like the film had been sped up. The audience was amazed and let out gasps of astonishment. >, but I have not seen that fight scene since that time. In 1985, the movie was aired on TV and I was excited to see the fight scene again, but to my disappointment, it was changed into very normal action scene as you know. I have searched for the original rapid punching scene in subsequent home video and DVD releases, but it was nowhere to be found. Even among people who know a lot about Bruce Lee, including those who saw the movie in theaters at the same time as me, no one has ever seen this scene. It's strange that such a great scene from the original theatrical release would disappear like this. If it were ever rediscovered and made public, it would be a wonderful gift to Bruce Lee fans...2023.03.04

Just saw the Big Boss Mandarin Cut on 4K at the cinema here in London, WOW. It had like 99% of all the deleted scenes mentioned. All except the saw to the head. My heart was racing a few moments before that moment thinking "I hope it will finally show it." But no such luck. But everything else was there and more I never knew existed, like extended scenes of the Boss and his son training and even a moment where you see the Manager toss a head of the first victims in to the water buckets before they turn into ice. The cart scene where Shu explains to Cheng he never studied Kung Fu, he learnt it from books before they are attacked. The icing on top was seeing Bruce yell out "Give me vengeance." and then running and stopping once more at the whore house. Even the first fight with the thugs who beat up the little kid was extended. I am very happy knowing those scenes are out there now.

One Question, if the scene did not attend, it was not recorded, because when he goes out to fight out on the field, his shirt is covered in blood everywhere. Baker is absolutely wrong here. I saw The Big Boss (It was billed as Fists of Fury) in a Nashville theater just prior to Bruce's death. The saw scene was positively in the screen version I saw...without a doubt. It was one of those scenes that stood out. This was 1973. This is reinforced by the fact that years later (in the era of VHS tapes) when the filmed was bootlegged even before it was officially released the saw scene was omitted. I couldn't understand it. Even without the saw scene I thought at the time that it was one of the most bloody violent films I had ever seen but considering what is shown now in movies I don't know why the scene wasn't restored (and actually it is more comedic then seriously violent). But then again... YES the saw scene was definitely in the edit that I saw. (Microphone drop) case closed....Baker is wrong.

I had seen that print as well In 73.

Lo Wei was in San Francisco (in 1971) to promote THE BIG BOSS, which had not yet been released in the United States. Lo Wei brought an uncut print for a private screening at the Sun Sing Theater in San Francisco's Chinatown, at that screening the saw scene could be seen. That is the reality, that it was later cut, perfect, another thing is to speculate that it did not exist, because there is not enough information or because there is no other nonsense to say.

@@samsingh3753 Sam, no I haven't. There is a lot more to this scene than most people think. Firstly it had to exist back in 1978 for Robert Clouse to have used in his version. Because when is James Tien and Chien Yuan who he is tapping the sticks to. There is also dialogue where James tells Chien his stick is longer and he is bigger then Dan. Personally I think the log is actually part of the Pagoda the Chien has pulled off as it looks to big to carry around from the start. Finally Dan Insosanto was rumoured to have a copy of the log scene, but this has been circulating since the 1980s with no evidence that he has.

I am almost 61 years old, and I am 100% convinced that I have seen the saw scene in the cinema, Approximately in 1978 when I was 16 years old, I was lucky enough to see all of Bruce's movies dozens of times in the theater, in English with Spanish subtitles, that was in Venezuela, I have talked to childhood friends, we are all fans of Bruce and trained Shotokan Karate, and they all remember the scene like me. False memories? I can't prove it At that time we did not have smartphones nor did we go to the movies with cameras, I do not know where those copies in English came from in Venezuela, I repeat that I assure you that I saw that scene

I know the Saw Scene was In the film, I would go to a Private Cinema on a Wednesday (It had to close that day) and the Manager like us was a Kung Fu nut. He ordered all of the films He could get a hold of, Including Withdrawn and Banded films. And We would spend the day just watching back to back films. He got hold of the workprints for the Bruce Lee Films. And There are scenes still cut from all of His films even today. The Eyes In the Food bucket that Williams opens In ETD. And when Bruce walks from the Bed to the Chair (First Prostitute) filmed from behind. And when the Knife goes In her back Is also Missing. The One Inch Punch to the head by the pool, In Big Boss. I could go on, so much so I cannot watch them now. And I am from the UK. Thanks for sharing.

I saw Fists of Fury on it's first release here in the US. My brain is not filling in anything. Here's what i saw, he picks up the saw and swings it down and the camera cuts to the saw stuck in his head. I remember squirming in my seat to that scene with my friends and we were all cracking up.

That's why you don't even see the chuks in the original Way of the Dragon British quad. They didn't even get to see that stuff until the late 90's in their VHS releases. Here in the US was a different ballgame altogether

Thiyagu thank you for your kind comment during the live chat session yesterday. Bruce has been a great passion of mine for the last 42 years. Over that time I've acquired a lot of information and knowledge on different aspects of him. Charles' channel has provided an outlet for it all and anything I pass on is simply intended for other fans to perhaps understand and appreciate Bruce's films and Martial Arts a little more. There is still a vast amount which I still don't know such as where and when did Bruce get the phrase, "Using no way as way. Having no limitation as limitation." back in the 70s kfm did a special bruce lee convention my Brother attended that he saw at least extra 10 -20 minutes off big boss showing Bruce Lee getting Drunk with his Cousins and where he got those crisps from back at the brothel this version is the one with the saw Samo hung attended the world premier he would know Big boss was the most edited film off all Bruce Lee films sadly my Brother passed away too confirm this all films were subtitled except E T D Hope this helps

Evidence of it's inclusion at some point in the earliest print of the film is in the audio of the mandarin version of the Big Boss. In this version, the moment the saw is swung down, the victim begins to scream for a split second but then this jump cuts out as the scene was cut.

I agree with you. I spoke to a few collectors and fans that claimed and remember seeing the scene when it was first release in the early 1970's. At this point we need to find the early VHS tapes that may contain that scene.

The problem with locating the saw scene is that it was cut out of the film so early (speculated just after the premiere or perhaps even before?) so it is presumed that it was never included in any international release of the film and would not be found on any VHS tapes or even 35mm prints. Even the Hong Kong film archive does not have it...this archive is where Arrow obtained the recently found Mandarin Cut of the Big Boss(10 mins extra footage but still no saw scene). My theory is that the Warner Bros film archive MAYBE have it in their possession. Reason to believe this; There are currently three main still images/photos of the saw scene. Two are from the same side/front angle . And the other is from the side/rear angle. It is this side/rear angle image that is of most interest because it was first released during the 1993 documentary, Curse of the Dragon. This documentary was Directed by Fred Weintraub and distributed by Warner Brothers. We could speculate that this image does not resemble a promotional still but rather potentially an actual "screen grab" from the film. Either Fred Weintraub himself or someone else provided him with that image to be included in the documentary. The problem with all of this info is that we are a little too late. Fred Weintraub passed away in 2017 at the age of 88 and it has been 30 years since the documentary was made. This makes it very difficult to follow up on any lead. Someone with full access to the Warner Bros archive would perhaps be a good place to start..

@@dogley1 the b/w saw in head image you mentioned was first seen in 1990, at a Bruce Lee convention in London. George Tan has all the photos from the film shoot (many still unpublished), given to him by the Golden Harvest photographer in the 1980s. George brought large laminated prints with him to sell at the event, and he also later provided images for the Curse of the Dragon doc. Golden Harvest did send Fred a print of The Big Boss in 1972 - I wonder what this contained, and who has it now?

I know that George used to get asked years ago on forums about the saw scene...he never claimed to have seen it and stated it was only available now as stills. Did Fred have it at one point? Maybe, but I'm guessing by 1972 they would have sent him a cut version, I guess we'll never know at this stage.

I saw the saw scene as well in Italy in a cinema some time around 1975.

Rumor or not. This scene must exist due to Bruce tilting the handsaw with his feet in the ice factory, then according to Cinema's laws, the scene was cut out, I guess. Several years later, this saw scene was later popularised in the manga and anime "Fist of the North Star" when Kenshiro partially diced the saw through a punk's head.

Great interview with Rick again. With the saw scene, its now possible that it was removed during the initial edit because it was considered to violent. And since Rick watched Big Boss with Raymond Chow, then he would have confirmed it for sure. Stanley Kubrick withdrew A Clockwork Orange after a year himself, so anything is possible. The sad thing is, if it was removed and now lost. We have been waiting for over 50 years for something that doesn't now exist.😞🙏🐉

Sigung Richard told me the first thing he saw on the opening night (I assume the Tuesday) was the miniature tombstone by the door. I'm guessing it was to the right. What he didn't know was that I had got one made for him which I was pleased to present to him after the seminar. He was overjoyed and said he always wanted George to make him one. The next I saw him he told me he put it on the counter of the IMB academy so you could see it as you came in. It was also present at his memorial after his passing which made me feel very proud.

There is another missing shot, where a dagger is slammed down into James Tien's head. I was going to see horror movies at a city grindhouse theatre around 1973 [The Paris Theater, in downtown Providence, Rhode Island even though I was only 16 at the time. At one point, I went to a double feature of Mark of the Devil and Mark of the Devil Part Two. The first movie scared me so much, I told the ticket taker that I wouldn't be able to handle the second movie, and asked if I could watch the second movie in the theater's kung fu double feature instead. I'd never seen a kung fu before, but was blown away by the movie I saw: Supermanchu aka Stormy Sun, starring Chang Yi. The following week, they had a double feature of Fist of Fury aka The Big Boss and Enter the Dragon. At one point in Fist of Fury, James Tien's character got stabbed in the head in such a nasty way that I distinctly remember thinking to myself, "I thought I was getting *away* from horror movies!" The footage from the Mandarin Cut at kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKrVY4GOrL16Zrs is not the same as what I saw. The Mandarin Cut has Tony Lui flying over James Tien's head, implying that he'd slashed him in midair. The scene I saw circa 1973 might have had him leaping, but it was no glancing blow. What I remember is his holding a slim knife (a switchblade?) with the blade pointing down, and stabbing downward right into the top right of Tien's head. I remember being stunned at the time. I don't think any flying leap was involved. Maybe the leap was an alternate take so as not to show the really gory shot I saw. It was not a glancing blade slash. It was sticking him in the head as if with an ice pick. I actually saw the arm with the blade sticking into Tien's head. And it was not momentary: it lasted a second or two as blood welled up out of the wound.

I've read in a few books/mags (70'/80's) that in the original mandarin print (not the HK release) the saw scene was included in the first screenings,but then removed by the the censors for excess violence,there are also a few deleted/missing scenes on the UK 2 disc Big Boss dvd from HK legends.the 2nd visit to the brothel is shown in the chinese trailer too.

The scene where the head splits open from the saw was only released in Malaysia. Before it was removed because of violence .however it's possible bootlegs emerged from pirate copies , I'm adamant it never reached official cinemas though.

Ricky, if I can call him that is working too hard. There were many Hong Kong articles written and Lee himself mentioned his concern over censorship in that part of the world especially in the U.K. Certainly Raymond had final cut which motivated Lee not to sign another contract as an employee with the man ever again. There are Big Boss trailers with that close up in it. I saw it in a trailer back in the seventies. There are other Big Boss scenes deleted, for example, Lee's run with the prostitute was more intense and lingering. But it was cut. Seldom do you shoot a scene just to shoot it without the intention of it making final cut. Whatever the reason, fine. But don't say it doesn't exist.

So Dad rented Way of the Dragon from a video store, then Fist of Fury - I'd never seen anything like it, I was hooked! I bought a few books and mags from a shop in Carnaby Street, London, called DH Martial Arts and have been a fan ever since.

Dear Charles, Am I the only person who is still Alive who went to the Bruce Lee kung fu monthly film dec 1st festival 79' the Big Boss was completely uncut and had the saw scene intact it was borrowed from a private collector who owned it at that time especially for the event if you read the advertisements from kfm at the time it tells you all the info! that is why I went Now I have read that someone stated that this particular screening the Big Boss was entirely uncut except that the saw scene wasn't included I'm stating all this to confirm that the film was completely uncut and the Infamous saw scene was 100% Included!! did this person go to festival my answer is he obviously couldn't have done there will be information on this event and how it went in a kfm not long after the event to inform everyone at that time how the event did anyone have a check in whatever numbered kfm that it would be! you're looking for either December or January possibly February that they wrote about how it played out! But it still is the longest cut that has ever been seen to this day.

@@CharlesDamianoBLC Yeah I heard that the film censors told them to remove it before the film was released. The film with that scene on it was most likely just thrown away since there wasn't really any preservation for unused or deleted footage at that time. It's a pity but at least we have photos of it. Arrow Video are releasing an incredible Bruce Lee boxset in July, they have the original mandarin version of The Big Boss which has an extra 10 minutes of footage. The saw scene isn't there but there's lots of other footage that's never been released on home video before. Stuff that hasn't been seen since the 70s. They also have the long lost log fight from Game Of Death, that was also believed to not exist anymore so you'd never know. The saw scene might pop up eventually.

Interesting, I was thinking of that scene, but at that time ('94,95'?) I only had an HK movie guide book with a black and white picture. Seems there's more to it though.. Tthe time of release? maybe, but Bruce (no pun intented;) Campell did it with a chainsaw.. Plz correct me if i'm wrong or am repeating other comments.

I believe after doing some research that the scene took place with a saw, and not a chainsaw. Scene was filmed, but never released in the movie upon its release. That’s the information I got from different brucelee, historians and sauces. Hope that helps glad you’re enjoying the channel be well.

Bear in mind this is very old, it was a Bruce Lee tribute forum(network 54 which is now defunct) in late 2006, so nearly 18 years ago. One member asked Steve if he had a copy of the uncut Big Boss and if the saw scene existed. Steve responded "Well.... i can assure you that YES the saw scene does exist, and cannot say anything else on the matter... believe me i've been approached by Hong Kong Legends and a few others who will pay good money, but because of my word, i will not bend.."

@@CharlesDamianoBLC Actually that did lead to the rumour circulating for a while that he had it but he later denied having it himself. So it appears to suggest he knows/knew who did have it. I speculate he could be referring to the "estate". I know for a fact he was in contact with them and has worked with them on Bruce Lee projects, including with Shannon Lee. Try to get in contact with Steve, you did a great interview with Bey Logan recently. You could ask Steve these questions in person. Thanks for all the content, Charles. Keep up the good work
