I hear more excitement with the tape. I don't think the gain levels are matched - the tape seems louder. But still, I hear more top end harmonics.

One of the reasons we quit using tape was because it didn't sound as good. If you work with it every day for a decades you know that. Your tape machine is good for low end bass maybe kick drum and toms. Anything you want with high end clarity the tapehead rubs it out after the 3rd or 4th pass.

TL;DR I need a good starting point for tape emulations(settings wise) Okay so my reason for wanting to use tape emulations instead of mix bus compression is because the comp always sounds like too much glue, too squashed, or just knocked back a little too much to me personally. I've been trying to experiment with the izotope tape emulations but can't figure out how it should be setup. My genre(or more so feel) is americana with a r&b flair but i'm wanting the emotional depth of Sleeping with Sirens(ironic but still, this was actually the first song i heard by them and fell in love at 17. Pun intended) I'm thinking that it obviously wont sound the exact same but probably more along the lines of Tusks by Fleetwood Mac or Barton Hallow by Civil Wars.

Tape is literally about the machine (or the emulation of machine) and how hard you drive it. Don't fuck with settings or anything like that, just get a good machine (or emulation) that sounds good. I, myself got into it 15 years ago and it was all about understanding what each machine actually does. I would honestly recommend buying Magnetic II by Nomad Factory. It tries emulating the most common tape machines and it has its own gain stage that works differently per machine. It's a good way to learn. Don't fuck around with the settings or eq, you're just looking to drive tape for colour. Also, at the very least, do it on just the instrumental. You might want to get into stem mastering too, try different machines for drums/bass, guitars and extras.

@@musicdude1540 thanks for the reply! I'll give that a try but also wanna give a shout to an Airwindows plugin called ToTape5. It's really helped me understand how to drive up to the wall of a tape machine in the past few weeks since posting this. It's good and clean but can easily saturate once you hit it past a certain point. Legitimately gives me the same sound quality as this record and as an indie artist, this is apparently what I was missing this whole time. Again, I'm gonna check that out but this one plugin has saved me so much heartache since using it

Try UAD stuff. If you don't have any UAD-interface or satellite, try the Softube TAPE, the U-he Satin or the Kiive Tape Face (In order of my preference). That's some good ones. Also you could try to use bus comp with tape saturators simultaneously, but don't crush the settings, try something more suble like slow atack, fast release and 2db of Gain Reduction on the peaks, if you don't like it, just try something else... or nothing else.
