The movie is ALWAYS what matters, even if it comes in a plain paper sleeve.

The WHOLE POINT of collecting physical media is to acquire the movies you like so that you can watch them or reference them anytime you like and have a library that reflects YOUR personal taste. That’s why I don’t understand the people who just buy every movie that comes out or the people who won’t buy a movie if it’s not on 4K. If it’s one of your favorite movies, then the format shouldn’t matter. Just collect the movies you love in the best format that you can afford.
@MoviePalaceOfBlood5 ай бұрын
There's silly collectors that won't buy movies without slipcovers and ones who buy everything a label or sublabel/line puts out even if they don't know or care about the film just to be complete on lines. Also people who buy thousands of discs that stay sealed for years because they're buying so much they can't even get to watching it.
@LarryFleetwood86755 ай бұрын
I agree, though I support and prefer physical media I've actually almost stopped buying new releases, recent doesn't equal better as many collectors think and as for 4K, forget it not a fan of the crappy grading on many releases. I'll still buy used or old DVDs and Blu-rays of titles I want but new releases will have to be rare and important stuff I don't already have. Say, if the release looks obviously better than another release then I'll upgrade as I did with Arrow's superior release of Horror Express. Overall, I'm content with what I have on primarily DVD it's the classic movie itself and the enjoyment of it that matters to me only not what critics think is good looking, on a good Blu-ray player anyway that upscales to 'HD' a DVD can look quite excellent to me. Last night I saw Raro's release of The Death Occurred Last Night (1970) and it was beautifully sharp and detailed, just an example of how great DVD can still look given the right settings. There's no need to purchase everything, if one's collection is substantial enough with the favourites that's really all you need.
@dankairgadam88415 ай бұрын
@@LarryFleetwood8675 Agreed. Also, sometimes the earlier format will have the best release of the movie. The Star Wars movies for example got horrible 4K transfers, so I prefer the blu-rays. The Lord of the Rings had great DVD transfers, but the Blu-rays and 4Ks have issues with color timing, DNR, etc. I absolutely HATE DNR. Movies shot on film are SUPPOSED to have film grain.

It baffles me that some people are obsessed over the number of discs they own and how they look on the shelf and not the films themselves. I have a relatively modest collection of 1200 movies and I have viewed over 97% of them. I constantly curate my collection and sell off stuff I don’t like or plan on watching again 😊
@TheCommentNinja815 ай бұрын
Same for me. And for the 3% I did not watch yet, they are separated from my collection and most of them will probably not go in the collection. And I will be finish with my backlog, I will go back to movies in my collection that I've only watch 1 time and make a new pile of movies to watch to see if they pass the test of the second viewing or not. Curated collection are the most personal and the best.
@MoviePalaceOfBlood5 ай бұрын
There's a lack of curation, especially among boutique buyers. People are buying stuff they have no idea what it is or even if they hate it they never sell anything off. Nobody likes everything, I say if your not regularly buying AND selling off your not curating films your collecting packaged discs.
@ApolloT-vp5dn5 ай бұрын
Is 1200 modest? That's a large library of films in the grand scheme of things.
@TheCommentNinja813 ай бұрын
@@MoviePalaceOfBlood I agree with you about Boutique Buyers. It's almost a Social Statement to me. They love these movies because they are rare movies. It's make them seems like Exploitation or Horror connaisseurs because they got all these movies with no personal connection to them ans being seen as a connaisseurs is kind of a label of superiority among collector. I love horror and exploitation movies and I do like to discover new movies of these specific genres. but I won't gonna lie, most if them are bad or just plain ordinary.
@g3ckoizlethal5 ай бұрын
I always try to collect movies that I like/love, as well as movies I know are rare/OOP. So, while most of them I've seen, there are some I haven't, but take the chance to grab them right then, because who knows if they'll still be there the next time. That's one that's one thing I learned, when collecting, is that if you see something you like/interested in, it's best to get it right then and not wait, because that's your opportunity. At the same time, I'm also collecting to preserve physical media and movies, in general, because if they're not streaming, I want to make sure I can watch something whenever I want.

I can’t believe someone would be that stupid to say there isn’t a link between Blu-ray DVD 4K or whatever the format and films…. That’s ridiculous. The packaging is always secondary, it’s always the movie first. I know I have a large collection of movies but I don’t sit there looking at the cases, I watch as much as I possibly can. (I also agree with you, I find myself turning toward older films now, as a lot of the new stuff is bland) I will only buy with the intention of watching. I don’t get the reasoning behind buying a films to have it sealed on the shelf for ever. Excellent video mate, take care👍😃👍

Sorry to hear about your loss of a loved one. I stumbled upon your channel last week. I like hearing reviews from someone on another continent. I'm from The United States, Detroit to be exact!! What I like most is that you actually watch and review the films. Most KZbin collectors complain about box art and packaging, having never seen the movie. You can't take some comments seriously. You don't know if they come from a place of ignorance, mental illness or just trolling along

100% agree…I’m a book collector/dealer and I’ve also started to create my own movie library…I will only purchase used copies of dvd/blu-rays, and only movies that I love…same with books…I’m firmly against this boutique culture that corporations are now pushing on us…nothing breaks my heart than shelves full of unopened books and movies…those pieces of art were designed to be read, watched and admired…I guess it’s one of the failings of our society that we need to commodify fucking everything…read books and watch movies…life is short. Just started watching your vids, they are nice break from the stress of this world…I’m terribly sorry for your loss

I think the movie absolutely matters. Yeah, we can talk about different editions, etc, but at the end of the day, I want movies in my collection that have the rewatchability factor. It's such a damn shame seeing these so-called collectors buying trash just because it comes from a certain boutique label. I've come to the point in my collecting life where I'm not here to score points with fans/subscribers. I collect what I like, and if the movie is trash or has no value to me, then I could give a crap whether it comes from Vinegar Syndrome, Scream Factory, Severin, Criterion, etc. Collecting for collecting sake gets you a s**t collection, and eventually, you start getting rid of the trash. It's a tale as old as time, and it happens to every collector eventually no matter how hard you try to deny it.

I'm a movie lover. I'm not a collector of movies for the sake of it though. I only buy movies I am going to watch. Even then, I only buy movies I'm going to watch more than once. I have limited space and so, I can only really dedicate space to the movies I love. If you're like me, I can find 1000s of movies that fit in this rule book. I'm here for the joy of cinema and the escapism it brings.

My condolences to you for your loss. I lost my mother last year. Yes, that group is certainly puzzling. On the one hand, whoever created and/or moderates that group does have to right to establish their own rules and regulations. But then again since the collecting of the physical media and the contents which they contain usually go hand in hand, this certainly is mind boggling! Maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to find another group that truly appreciates the films and are enthusiatic about discussing them. After all, I collect films for the sole purpose of enjoying them. To each his or her own though.

My condolences, I know how you feel. I lost my Dad in 2021 and my Mom in 2022. Nothing is so hard to deal with. You are correct in what you say. I have a good collection of about 1000 purchased movies, mostly on DVD. I’m just now getting into 4K BluRays. I’ve also been recording movies I like from my DVR onto DVD-Rs since 2010. I also collect TV shows on DVD. Again, you are right, the content comes first. No one should want to collect movies and TV shows just to increase their collection. They should want to see and/or like everything they have collected.
@alexanderfedderly5 ай бұрын
Totally agree. We should be buying the films we love, and/or the films we feel are important to own in an archival sense, rather than collecting for the sake of itself, for the sake of just accumulating products in a materialistic way. That's not to say we can't enjoy the packaging of special editions and whatnot, because I certainly do, but the point is that I don't feel the need to collect *everything* just to keep up with the Joneses. I love Criterion, but I don't pre-order every release, I pick and choose the ones I love or the ones I'm specifically interested in. Because what's the point of having thousands of movies you don't care about? At the end of the day, it's the film that matters, not owning a bunch of stuff just for the sake of collecting.

First off fantastic Video if I would’ve got that message from somebody, I would’ve been totally pissed off . Why do I do a KZbin page to talk about movies? I have movies on DVD Blu-ray 4K . I don’t collect movies because they’re in pretty shiny packaging I don’t collect movies because they’re limited edition and I have a flipper mentality. I know a lot of people on KZbin one person in particular who buys movies just to buy movies and he’ll buy more than one copy of a movie because there’s different artwork on each release. This will keep it wrapped put them on the shelf and then when the time comes, probably flip it and sell it. It’s disgusting. They don’t belong in this community for movie fans.

It's a great question. Bar gifts that are lovely, buying FOMO releases, or the sheer art & memorabilia, if you're buying PM faster than you can watch or listen to it, then your collection means more than the intended purpose of the content (video and/or audio). As for sanctimonious FB and FB trolls, don't bother wasting your valuable time...

Of course the movie matters. Why collect something you don’t enjoy? Unless you have a damn mansion with infinite space and money you can just burn for the hell of it. But even then, if you go to watch a movie you’re gonna have a bunch of mediocre stuff to sift through just like you would on a streaming service so there’s no point.

I collect what I love, not what looks good on a shelf. What other purpose can there be in collecting movies on discs than the simple love of those films? BTW, I have so many of the same films you do! Just watched The Time Machine a couple days ago.
