The Herd with Colin Cowherd the only problem I have is many nba players drafted are black more then likely come from harsh environment barley can survive on there own at college with parents struggling to make ends me as well. People have families to take care of don't tell me BJ MULLENS was the only player that was forced to come to nba because of financial problems that's the big problem if you're going to want players to stay pay them atleast enough for them to be stable enough in college barley have money for food smh

The Herd with Colin Cowherd Colin, you're overlooking the concern these players have about potential injury. Their hard work and hopes would be dashed. The rule is one and done so they're following the rule. The NBA and the Players Union agreed based off their judgment. Anecdotal case at best.

Ivan Rabb, who got drafted this year, was supposed to be a lottery pick last year but decided to stay and his average went down because his team wasn't the same as last years (constantly double teamed) and lost millions of dollars by being a second round pick. Easy to say what you said when it's not your money involved, Cowherb.

The problem is these kids are playing basketball in AAU and Private school leagues which are watered down with suburbian kids with little to no talent. The city is where the talent is at but these kids don;t get the same grades as the private school kids and go unnoticed because their high school does not get much publicity. There are better players in america than some that are in the league and the proof is on the courts.

If college players where being adequately compensated(and no a sham education isn't compensation) I would agree with you. If I am an NBA prospect I don't want to play for free and be exploited any more than I have to. A lot of those player got poor families to feed. The Lakers organisation bares some of the blame for the DLo situation though. They had a talented prospect and pretty much threw it in the trash to dump salary

19 today is not like 19 yesterday. 19 today is like 15 yesterday. The maturity rate has declined so much; people in their 20s still act like teenagers. In the 90s the behavioural structure of someone in their 20s was very distinct in comparison to someone in their teens.

It should be kids are able to go straight out of high school to the nba but if they want to go to college they have to stay there for 2-3 years to mature. There is literally no point in one-and-done kids, if it's about money then straight out of college and if it's about maturity then at least 2-3 years in college have both options on the table for the kids to choose.

Basketball is business first. When did we become appalled at young men who are being exploited by the NCAA decide to get compensated? The NCAA makes bookoo money off of these players. Dangelo will be an all star. So let's not scapegoat him. Besides, 18-19 year olds drop out of college and make an app that instantly makes them a millionaire. We are not questioning the maturity of these people. And to say these young men are chasing compensation and don't have the passion for the game is ridiculous. The level of work needed to get drafted is insane. Come on Collin.

I think a big problem is the way the game is played or taught. A lot of these young players don't have the fundamentals down. It's all about pace and shooting. A lot of these players coming out have glaring weaknesses, but there's no incentive to stay in college when you know you'll get drafted.

Slime I know exactly what you meant and no I meant what I said and no they don't need to revert back to drafting high schoolers. If the one and dones are ruining the league then why would you draft high schoolers again? What kind of sense does that make? Now if you want to draft high schoolers into the D-league like the other person said, that is a different story. I think that's a good idea but NBA will have to actually take the D-league seriously
@dimitrisbright9807

The solution for this is simple. START PAYING THE COLLEGE PLAYERS!!! If you compensate the college players for what they're actually owed, then you'll have more incentive for a player to stay in college
@venti3119

Nah just let high school players go directly into the NBAPaying the players will lead to the destruction of college athletics. Title IX means that the woman's backup field goal goalie will have to make the same amount of money as the quarterback and point guard...and schools can't afford that so entire programs will be shut down and the opportunity for a free education via sports for many students is gone.

I think Colin makes some very valid points with respect to the NBA drafting players at an early age. But, this is a problem that the NBA created itself! I saw the interview with Coach Cal (Kentucky) and it was spot on! Cal made it clear, if you draft a 19 year old kid, pay him millions of dollars and expect him to have the maturity of a 25 year old young man, good luck!! Now their are exceptions when this pans out and works, Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, to name a few. But for the MOST part you are getting a guy who is just that, a 19 year old kid, still developing physically and mentally, playing with grown men ................... for large amounts of money. You can't be surprised at the end result.

I don't know why the NBA, or even the NFL make minimum ages for drafting. If you're 18 you can go fight for your country but can't be a professional athlete and provide for your family? Maybe 18 year olds aren't ready for the bigtime yet. That's mostly true. The MLB and NHL, where you can draft 18 year olds, very rarely start in the top league except for the exceptional, generational talents. But if organizations think it is too risky to draft HS players to where they aren't drafted high, players will go to college to increase their draft stock, and consequently money. Another point that's hard to ignore is in the NBA the players generally come from rough situations financially and their families could use the money ASAP. If you're forced to play in college and get hurt, you lose millions.
@project10bball
@project10bball 7 жыл бұрын
Dennis if they ain't ready owners don't have enuf incentive to pay them yet
@DennyJr22
@DennyJr22 7 жыл бұрын
Exactly, so they won't draft them. But if you and the NBA owners think you're ready, and will draft you high, why be forced to go to college? It's not right for the players, they get used by both ends. The NCAA wants the young, super talented kids to play college basketball because it fills their pockets. Same for coaches, because one recruit can make them millions in incentives or a renegotiated contract if he leads them to tournament success. The owners get a cop out since HS players have a higher bust potential and having fans/reporters say they shouldn't have drafted HS kid. In general, do I think an 18 year old is ready to travel the country, be away from his family, and face men that are much older, wiser, and stronger? No. But it shouldn't preclude them trying to make a living if the money is there.

The NBA does not have a one and done problem. Society has a problem with giving out resources equally to communities that have suffered since the Magic Johnson days and before that. What you're seeing is the byproduct of the environment these kids are developing in where they're main focus is to get paid because at one point they weren't sure as to where their next meals was coming from. I applaud Magic for being honest but let's not forget that you've given a child the world who's never had anything of significant material value and expect them to act as if they've been there before when they never have.

my 2 cents If Emmanuel Mudiay had started his career well, I bet more kids would be going to Europe/Abroad for a year, then come back after earning a little money and when eligible. The answer to all the one and done problems is having a very much improved and differently structured D-League. - A D-League that would even attract top European players. - A D-League that would be at par if not better than the Euroleague. - A D-League that is marketed better, at least better than the Big 3

I actually think the NBA should make it two to four years and draft. If you allow high school eligibility, it is going to incentivize players to stay back in high school even longer. Second, these kids don't seem to be mature when they enter the NBA. I think what needs to be changed is tanking, because the majority of bad basketball we are seeing is due to teams tanking, sitting down players, and shutting down players.

Im all for young men looking for an opportunity to get money out of HS but I do believe that the overall NBA product has weakened because of the one and done. What Adam Silver should do is allow athletes to come out of the high school and if they do they must serve a year in the G League or if you are to going to go to college you must commit for 2 years.

Both of you guys are wrong. There is not a correlation between a number of years you spend in college/education and not "blowing" your NBA money. I guarantee they are more guys who ended up losing money after their NBA careers that actually spent 2-4 years in college vs the "one and done/highschool".

What is the point of college? to learn how to make money, so it makes no sense that you would hold someone back from making a living, when the whole point of college is to learn how to make a living. you are better off learning basketball with the professionals instead of the ameteurs in college.

The problem is most players at 19 suck at basketball the large majority of the lotto picks. they should really have to do 2 years of college so the team drafting them knows what their doing. Look at guys like Brandon Ingram. #2 pick high ceiling and will be a great player but stunk it up in his 1st season. it will be even worse for high school kids. there's only ever been 1 LeBron who was ready

Listen to the people that he said stayed in college. Its not about staying for another year its is about the money because most of these athletes being African american families are very poor and they feel they cannot wait another year for this opportunity because they might get hurt and there family needs the money now. You cannot blame all the players, sometimes you have to look at their situations

If you're going to complain and rant about this, then you need to tell me what you'd do about Ivan Rabb, who was a lottery pick last year, went back to school, fell to round 2 and now everyone thinks he's an idiot. Or, you can be the good teams in the league (the spurs and warriors) and just decide "we're not going to draft 19 year old college freshmen". The Spurs have drafted one: Dejunte Murray, who looks like a steal, and the warriors picked 1 Kevon Looney, because he was a lottery talent available at #30 due to injuries. Look at the other guys the warriors have drafted (McCaw and Harrison Barnes, finished Sophomore year, Draymond and Ezeli, finished four years, Steph, Klay, Bell and Damian Jones, finished 3 years.) The new draft market inefficiency is veteran college players who are lower risk and more ready to contribute. Hate to tell you this, but Russell is 21, been in the league 2 years. Lonzo Ball is a rookie, under-developed (physically) slow foot speed, jump shot is broken. Magic is going to be doing the same thing to Lonzo in two years that he just did to Russell. Ball better watch his back.

Why isn't he saying the same thing about baseball players getting signed out of high school. The NBA and NCAA is only concerned about making their pockets fatter. What is the point of having these kids go to school for 1 year. if the utlimate.goal is to get a degree they won't accomplish that in 1 or 2 years. Let them go to the league and if they really care about th put something in place to help th navigate the or new lifestyle: financial mgmt, women, training, etc.

In baseball you got a whole minor league system you gotta play through
@omarfoote5777
@omarfoote5777 7 жыл бұрын
That is kind of my point. They have a minor league system but they are not requiring those guys to go to college. I never hear anyone complain about a high school baseball player signing with a Major League Team. But they still want to develop their players so they can deliver a good product in Major League Baseball. It should be the same for basketball. But they aren't concerned about those kids in anyway. Football and Basketball are the only two sports that require kids go to college. Even Hockey players can go straight to the NHL and that is just as physical a sport as any. So you tell be what the common denominator in these sport are? Baseball, Hockey, Tennis etc vs. Basketball and Football.

Yes there's too much focus on getting paid, this new CBA agreement is awful subpar marginal D+ C- players getting B+ money the NBA was better when there was handchecking and players had to actually go out and earn their pay...

One and done is perfect for the NBA. College sports is overrated. Good players will get better in NBA. A 22 year old who has been in the league for 3 years is better than a 22 year old rookie.
