Episode 1 of 0079 is one of the best vertical slices of a show I've ever seen. It's simply incredible what they were capable of conveying in a single episode. I re-watch this episode pretty consistently and every time I notice something new, or see a line of dialogue in a different light. I wish more modern shows were willing to take their time and put as much consideration into their storytelling as granddaddy gundam did.

Strongly prefer 1979 Gundam to Zeta, making my way through ZZ right now. I just think Zeta is so self serious and bleak with fewer compelling characters than what 1979 had
@andrewcarter964910 күн бұрын
I'm surprised you enjoyed it so much, I generally prefer the film trilogy as it smooths out some of the series problems without sacrificing the story too much (something film trilogies for future series fail miserably at, stay away from Zeta's A New Translation if you value your sanity) and the third film is entirely new animation and looks quite good. You're not wrong about the Lalah romance with Amuro being rushed, the series was supposed to be 50 episodes long but was cancelled, Tomini had to fight to get a few extra episodes to finish the story. One thing I really like about 0079's story that I've yet to see any other Gundam series replicate is that the protagonist and their ship have very little to do with the overall events of the war, they're involved but not the driving force. The show goes out of it's way to point out how Zeon wildly overvalues the White Base and so it's used as a decoy, you could remove the White Base's entire journey Zeon would still lose the war. I hope you give Zeta the same treatment, for me it's the best Gundam series story wise.
@jumpreport10 күн бұрын
Of course! I’m hoping I can plan this Zeta video’s work a little better than this one and obviously make it even better than this video. And when it comes to this vs the trilogy, I plan on showing my co host Taylor just the movie trilogy will. He’s not into Gundam like I am so I think it will be a better investment for someone like him. And yeah I noticed that with the white base, it’s cool how Gundam feels like a grander story is happening in the bg but they’re willing to focus in on this one specific story of the war

No doubt, one of the most unique series I’ve ever seen in my life. It’s hard to imagine that the anime, even after being canceled, managed to become such a major franchise. Despite a rocky start, poor toy sales from Clover (one of the worst toy companies), and a limited initial release, it still stood alongside Star Wars and Star Trek as an iconic sci-fi and war-themed franchise. About my favorite characters: Jose, one of the original White Base soldiers, saved Amuro with nothing but a Core Fighter. Job John... just hearing his name makes you start liking him. Kai begins as someone ignorant, who cares about no one but himself, but by the end of the series, he truly shows that he values those around him. And, of course, Amuro-it’s hard to imagine a world where Amuro dies in episodes 7/8, especially since Tomino initially didn’t want him as the main character.

Doing this as a separate comment both to increase engagement and so others might see it and weigh in. Very well done video. I really appreciate the respect you show for both the old series while also managing to avoid writing off Origin. Many who start with it will suddenly flip to hating on it when they learn it’s not really canon. Same happens with Thunderbolt, another great UC-based series. In any case, watching Gundam can be a very different depending on how familiar on is with anime in general. All the tropes, gimmicks and character archetypes are familiar yet fresh. It’s both a history lesson and a great narrative experience that has absolutely aged remarkably well. The series has flaws of course. Honestly quite a lot. Most are the result of investor meddling and underbudgeting. 11 planned episodes were cut after all. If they’d known this beforehand, they would probably have left out things like the salt gathering episode. As a sidenote, I’m getting a friend of mine to watch the series finally and I strongly feel the issue you talked about with the brainrot attention span destruction. One thing is when he misses direct details like why the Gundam was at Side 7, another is when he seemingly doesn’t actually *watch* the animation. Like you noted with Amuro’s look of horror after witnessing his first deaths, this seems to have flown by his head along with Amuro initially struggling to get the Gundam moving, asking «how is he so good right off the bat». Need to melt his phone, on God. As for newtypeism, my personal belief is that it is supposed to be somewhat ambiguous. It gets developed quite a lot throughout the main story, but the fanbase is divided on how far we should accept it being taken. Tomino sets a pretty solid limit is all I’ll say for now. I think it is a mistake to consider newtypism a power system rather than a philosophical proposition. A newtype doesn’t have the power to move faster or hit harder. It’s based on emotion. You feel the enemy’s hostile intent and therefore you can react to it. You gain a greater sense of the space around you and the emotions of those in it. This is also how things like the Elmeth’s (Lalah’s mobile armour) funnels seem to work. Rather than being drones, they move based on intent and aim based on the «aura» of the target. Fans often fall into the trap of ignoring how even when used for battle, newtypism is fundamentally about connecting with people beyond words. I personally believe none of the instances of newtype telepathy are meant to be taken as actual words, more like guiding via feeling. Those that seek to weaponize newtypes are either ignorant or dismissive about this. Regarding Kycilia’s anti newtype sentiment towards the end, there is quite a lot of extensive manga lore in that regard. Currently the english translation is fanmade and the proper translator dropped it, the last few dozen chapters are translated with google from an already thai scanlated version. It’s… not good. I think you paint a very good picture of the characters you do discuss and I promise Char will not stop delivering. Personally I wish the series provided more background for his character like Origin ended up doing with it’s 5th volume OVA as finding prewar Gundam lore from the purist UC is very difficult. Wild claims with no sources spread and even take root on the wiki, so take care not to believe everything it says. And lastly, on the note of the continuation I have already voiced my opinion on that poll, but I will reiterate that I don’t think the movies are necessary. Maybe more suited to go back to them after completing the original saga.

Glad you enjoyed the vid man. And yeah tbh it took me a second watch of episode 1 to see some of the incredible details of certain scenes (like Amuro’s expression after the death of the federation soldiers). Still conflicted on what to cover next but I’m sure anything I do post 0079 like Zeta or the movie trilogy will be an entertaining watch!

Excellent video! I appreciate you mentioning about the Origin not being a true prequel especially! I find that KZbinrs starting the series tend to treat it as such which can lead to confusion. Something I want to note (I've tried to be as vague as possible to avoid spoilers as you suggested) Amuro, Lalah and Char's connection is unfathomably strong. It's implied they understand each others intent on a much deeper level than anyone. This strong supernatural connection in tandem with Amuro's vulnerabilities and craving of understanding and validity as a teenager is likely what lead to his feelings. In that sense, I disagree that their dynamic feels rushed. The tragedy of 0079 is that with the potential of inherent understanding of peoples intent could allow them to thrive in peaceful times and come to ideological agreements without conflict, however Zeon and to a lesser extent the EFSF leverage that supernatural connection for war. This is what ultimately prevents these characters from reaching that idealised point Zeon Daikun strived for. To be fair to you, Newtype philosophy is explored in slightly more depth in the movie version of 0079. Tomino's future works like Zeta, ZZ and CCA also build on the bases set up by MSG a lot! I really look forward to seeing your perspective on that if you choose to progress further!

After 0079 is _Stardust Memories_ , which focuses on normal soldiers in a disadvantageous situation. _Zeta_ follows, and then _ZZ_ . In the period of the One Year War, you also have _War In The Pocket_ and _08th Mobile Suit Team_ , as well as the more recent _Mobile Suit Gundam: Thunderbolt_ . After _ZZ_ is _Char's Counterattack_ , and then _Unicorn_ , which has both a OVA miniseries and a full TV series. _Unicorn_ came out before _Thunderbolt_ , but the animation in both is very similar. There's also _Turn A_ and _Reconquista In G_ in this timeline, although they can be more confusing. _G-Reco_ especially gets described as 'a beautiful mess,' because while the art looks great, the story is confusing. There are also many alternate timeline retellings, including _Gundam Wing_, the popular _Gundam SEED_ series, its sequel, the _Freedom_ movie, and the _Astray_ sidestories. Then there's _Gundam 00_ , one of my favourites, as well as _Witch From Mercury_ and _Iron-Blooded Orphans_ . For a less serious angle, there's the _Build Fighters_ and _Divers_ series. Both _Fighters_ and _ReRise_ are liked better than _Try_ and _Divers_ , but they can be fun in their own right. Since these series put gunpla plastic models front-and-center, they are much more 'toy commercials' than the main series.

They say the English dub is worth using because of the sound mix being so much better. This show was monumental in creating character archetypes that would be paralleled throughout the franchise. SEED and AGE most obviously since they also paralleled the narrative. SEED is effectively a remix of the same story and characters, but with all the details jumbled up. I LOVE this approach to viewing the franchise. You are in this for the long haul friend, you've got 3 pretty good OVAs to get through before you get to Zeta, where the franchise becomes what it'll be known for forever. There's SOOO much to talk about. Eva was made specifically as a conjugate of this story, much like the other shows mentioned above. Wing takes more from Zeta, as will the rest of the series you will watch. 00 is effectively a remake of wing. IBO inverts the grand narrative position of the protagonists as heroes, and you realize they're actually the bad guys by the end. All of these shows take from this and more from Zeta. We're committed now, you and I. You gotta get at least through Zeta. ZZ was hard for me. Unicorn is probably still what I would call peak gundam. i think a review of cucuruz doan's island movie is a more fitting follow-up to this retrospective rather than jumping to the compilation trilogy. the movie trilogy (while being the canonical version of 0079 to char's counterattack later on) has this breakneck pacing which loses much of the storytelling and deeper character work the anime succeeds at, and the doan's island film is exactly that - a 108-minute movie that perfectly feels like an extended episode of the anime.

Gundam fan here with a few notes: Newtypes: this is important. WE, the audience, never hear what exactly Zeon Deikun's philosophy was, what his definition of Newtype was, all of that is filtered through the very flawed character of Char. And then, WE, the audience, have to interpret Char's interpretation of what exactly Newtypes are. Char's version of his father’s Newtype theory is not about genetics per se, but about the evolution of humanity, as a whole. Amuro was born on earth and raised in space. Char was born in space and raised on Earth. Lalah was born and raised on earth, and she's "more" of a Newtype than Char or Amuro. Space may have something to do with it, but not on the genetic level of an individual. Char in og Gundam is a bit of an odd character to talk about, especially to those that have seen The Origin's version of him, but I'd like to point out that Char might've been happy in the moment, but after Garma's death, Char more or less gives up on revenge. It's important to Char's character moving forward to internalize that all the trauma and pain Amuro went through, Char also went through but without the support system that Amuro had. Almost all of Char's comrades, subordinates, leaders, soldiers, people he's fought alongside with for a year, die. Lalah, one of the few people who he can be vulnerable with (or at least his version of it) died. He has no one. So when he realizes that Newtypes, these things that his father seemingly told him would be humanity's saviors, were instead being weaponized, he might've lost hope for them. As he describes them to Sayla, "Newtypes might just be a mutation brought about by war." I think that your analogy to Metal Gear is accurate. Many people, even in our real world, interpret Zeon Deikun and Newtypes differently
@jumpreport8 күн бұрын

@@jumpreport From what I hear, the TV series had some neat ideas for the time but suffered from being overly formulaic in many respects. It seems to have been perfectly watchable, just being nothing special. The movie, Be Invoked, on the other hand which provides the finale for the show (similar to how End of Evangelion did for it's TV series given both suffered from cuts near the end) is generally regarded as one of Tomino's best work. While there is a compilation movie of the TV series, I don't recommend it as it leaves out a lot of information that you would need to understand Be Invoked. It is interesting though as even though Ideon is a super robot show through and through, you can really tell that some of the Gundam real robot DNA is there. it also goes for a more space opera feel as compared to others in the same genre.

War in the Pocket is almost completely character driven and though it's one of the shorter entries in the franchise, you get to see the effects the OYW has on civilians in a very personal way. Stardust Memory shows immediate post-OYW world of the Universal Century and gives MSG's sequel, Zeta Gundam, some more world building as Stardust Memory shows the catalyst event that leads to the political climate in Zeta which happens four years later.

As someone who got into Gundam earlier this year, the original series shocked me with how good it was. I have a few gripes with a few episode's plots/dialogues, and Newtypes were barely touched upon, but overall it's still a classic despite the development issues it was plagued with. You picked up on that, since the original series was a bit of a flop, and the toy sponsor at the time shortened the episode count from I believe 54 to 43 due to poor toy sales. It wasn't until Bandai started making their own model kits (the gunpla we all know and love, I currently have 4 but just ordered 6 more) and the compilation movies that the series hit its stride. Sayla was my favorite character from the original (excluding Char when he drops his great lines), but well, I won't spoil anything about her in future Gundam series. At the moment my favorite Gundam show is Zeta Gundam, which was the next series Tomino made after the movies and is his unrestricted chance to do Gundam. Though before Zeta, there are a few series. During the One Year War there's several OVAs such as the 08th MS Team, 0080 War in the Pocket, the recent show on Netflix Requiem for Vengeance, and 1-2 others. For the most part those are pretty good, though have some flaws in their own ways. Then between those and Zeta is 0083: Stardust Memory, which somewhat sets the stage for Zeta's current setting, and is filled with great action and setpieces. It too has its own flaws though. All those lead into Zeta and that is directly followed by Double Zeta (ZZ), and then Amuro and Char's story reaches its conclusion in the movie Char's Counterattack. So while it may be a long ways off, especially if you take the time to look into the OVA series, I am looking forward to seeing your Gundam journey.

Watch stardust memory before you move onto zeta. That OVA is critical to understanding the post war transformation that the Earth Federation went through. I can’t stress enough how much the first third of zeta will make more sense if you watch stardust memory first

so a few notes: I'm honestly surprised you didn't bring up that this wasn't even Tomino's first mecha anime. in the 2 years leading up to Gundam he created both Zambot 3 and Daitarn 3 at Sunrise, and from what I understand the first one is tragic and the other one is kinda silly, which makes sense for Tomino. more importantly, to my understanding both of those shows produced some of the first mecha anime toys, and they were very successful. so much so that, yeah, Gundam suddenly not being able to sell toys meant that it got cancelled. the success of its predecessors actually set up the first real robot anime up for failure in a way I guess. it's also why the G-Fighter even exists; Clover, the toy company they were working with, wanted something new to sell so they had to come up with a weird transforming tank thing for kids to buy. also I'm a little surprised you didn't bring up the fact this show got cancelled (unless I did and I missed it, oops). and about Newtypes, apparently part of the reason they even came up with the idea was to explain how Amuro was able to pilot the giant war robot just by skimming through the manual once lol. and the romance betweeen Lalah and Amuro feeling "rushed", I mean that was kind of the point. their connection as newtypes was that strong. someone in a comment somewhere once described it like it was as if they knew each other their entire lives, and then Lalah dies. this is actually very important going forward re: Char and Amuro, but also meant to show what being a newtype meant. but I think you really should watch the movies because of all this. the movies were basically made because the show was originally a commercial failure, and a way to revitalize the franchise after the release of gunpla and renewed interest. they also change stuff in the second movie to add A LOT more about newtypes and actually feature them earlier in the story. there's also some changes, like the G-Fighter is completely replaced by a new vehicle 'cause as you can imagine Tomino and some other creators just really didn't like the thing and probably the corporate interfering that led to its creation. and the stuff they had to leave out for time: like I completely forgot about episode 8, that was actually a good episode about the nature of the conflict, but a lot of that stuff had to get cut out for time. anyway, sorry for the wall of text, but I do hope you read what I had to say.

Thanks for all that extra info! Good to know. And yeah the movies are on my list, just not sure if I want to do those immediately next or one of the side stories in between 0079 and Zeta
@PandaXs17 күн бұрын
@@jumpreport yeah, sure, though speaking of the show getting cancelled, maybe I should bring up how female viewers apparently helped carry the show a lot while it was airing. Tomino himself brought this up before, might be worth looking into. also, having seen all the side stories (I think?) 0080, 08th MS Team, and Requiem for Vengeance are just fresh, new takes on the One Year War. the only thing I can think of is there's a character from 08th MS Team who makes a cameo appearance in RfV so I guess keep that in mind? 0083 is kind of different, it's meant to be a prequel to Zeta and they have a few moments in there that are meant for people who have already seen Zeta to be like "omg it's him!" even then, it's not on the same level as watching The Origin first imo.

The movies would probably be a quick video. Most of it is cannibalized footage from the series, but with some scenes that Yasuhiko was allowed to redraw to cover up for some of the worst of the off-model problems. The third movie seemed to have much of the work redrawn, and it fixes some of the pacing problems of the TV show. For example, the final episode of Gundam seems rushed, and while the third movie included most of the footage (some redrawn) of the final episode, having twenty minutes of a movie end it rather than having twenty minutes of a forty-some episode series end it, made the ending seem a lot less rushed and a lot more earned. Also the movies (rather than the TV show) are basically canon for the rest of Universal Century Gundam shows going forward. In all the flashbacks, Sayla is in the core booster rather than the G-Fighter. But you would probably have more fun going directly to Z-Gundam.
@ThinWhiteDork10 күн бұрын
Please do the movies next. It's the same story you've seen, but streamlined and less obliging to the toy company (no G-Fortress, for example). And while there is SOME new animation in the first and second movies, the third is (almost) entirely new animation... And it looks MUCH better than the series. (Also, I know you started with the Origin, but as a long-time Gundam fan (I got into it as a kid in 1985), I ALWAYS recommend production order rather than chronological.)

Gundam 0079 (and pretty much every Gundam series ever) are 100% toy commercials. Sunrise is owned by Bandai, and their series before Gundam were all super robot anime that were meant to sell toys. Tomino's team pitched Gundam as an alternative to tap into an older market to buy model kits. Darker, more mature story vis-a-vis the campier child-oriented Super Robot shows before it was supposed to attract an audience that had more buying power and was more evergreen (ie, didn't get bored of buying the toy after the season was over---this is why fans nowadays are still buying 20 year old Gunpla). This is why there's a monster-of-the-week format in the series. It didn't really reach its intended audience initially, which is why it was commercially a flop. IIRC it didn't start getting traction until the model kits, and then the compilation movies, came out. As for Evangelion borrowing concepts...I mean, Hideaki Anno doesn't hide that Eva is his homage to all his childhood favorites. Ultraman, kaiju shows, mecha.
@johnfields47968 күн бұрын
This is both true and not true. Bandai didn't acquire sunrise until 1994, and while they were a major sponsor every subsequent gundam product for the reasons you stated, the original Mobil Suit Gundam was sponsored by a toy company named Clover. I don't know what the original pitch for gundam was, but Clover had imagined the show was going to be a by the numbers super robot show to market what is now a pretty infamously poorly selling dye-cast Toy robot. Gundam's production is pretty well documented and was rife with creative disagreements between Tomino, executives at sunrise, and Clover; this, combined with poor ratings since the show was marketed to children, (and the dye-cast toy was VERY expensive) ultimately lead to the show being cancelled 10 episodes early. Bandai would not make the first Gunpla model kit until almost 6 months after the show had been cancelled, when they saw a market in the show's unexpected popularity with teenagers who had started discovering the show via word of mouth.
@nanaholic016 күн бұрын
This is completely false - Plastic model kits made by Bandai did not come into Gundam until near the end of the life of the show - Bandai wasn’t even the original sponsor of Gundam and didn’t buy Sunrise until 1994! Gundam was a continuation of partnership between Sunrise and toy maker Clover after Tomino had successfully gave them several hit shows in Yuusha Reideen, Zambot 3 and Daitarn 3. After making 3 super robot shows (but with VERY different tones - Zambot 3 is even darker than Gundam even as a super robot show for example) Tomino got bored with giant mecha and wanted to push the envelope in his work and thus pitched Gundam - which was original inspired by Starship Troopers and would have the soldiers wear human sized powered suits - to Sunrise and Clover. Clover, which made what are called chougokin toys that are fully formed robot toys made mostly of disaster metal, agreed to sponsor the show again under the single condition that Tomino would turn it into yet another giant robot show but won’t interfere with the story, Tomino fought tooth and nail against it but gave up little by little until they reached the point of what it is now. The original draft of the Gundam design was mono coloured and had a space helmet for the head, only slowly got turned into the samurai armour and eventually given the tritone colour scheme cos Clover wanted to sell chougokin toys.

the animation was NOT bad at all. look at animation in literally every eurocentric country during those years. hell look at eurocentric animation clear into the 2000's lol. bad animation is stuff like what hanna barbera made. my mind is blown every time i remember that show was made a decade before i was even born. the animation is mind blowing when you dont compare it to stuff that was made with technology that people in the 80's couldnt even imagine.

The animation was bad in alot of places and was considered so even at the time. It's was a low budget show.
@twelfthknight9 күн бұрын
Gundam's animation being of questionable quality is in large part why a lot of Gundam fans want a remake similar to what Space Battleship Yamato got a couple of years ago. Sunrise keeps dangling the possibility of what a remake could look like since the late 90's, with remastered or reinterpreted scenes from MSG done with contemporary animation and a bigger budget -- that's not even including the Origins continuity. That said, there are places where the art direction overcomes the clunkier animation. I particularly like the sense of isolation and claustrophobia MSG can elicit in its cockpit scenes, or the use of shadows to give a unique sense of depth to some of the scenes in outer space. It's just... pretty inconsistent all around.
@jumpreport8 күн бұрын
Yeah the cockpit scenes + that bluish tint they’d sometimes use was a pretty memorable style of the show

I'll have to disagree with another commenter and *strongly* recommend you watch the compilation movie trilogy. Unlike most compilation movies, the 0079 movies actually improve the story. In addition to reanimated parts to fix some of the worst animation errors, and a couple of extra scenes, they have some *very* good musical additions to make the soundtrack less repetitive. The *BIG* improvement though is that the movies were made with a much stronger voice of Tomino and reduced influence from the toy company sponsors, since this was no longer a TV series that had to run commercials. A lot of the obvious toy gimmicks are removed. The Gundam Hammer is gone, the needlessly complicated G-parts are gone. The Gundam no longer uses a ridiculous rain poncho to survive atmospheric reentry. Many of the "monster of the week" enemies/toy commercials that don't affect the plot are removed (mostly the goofier ones). In addition a lot of the goofy slapstick is removed (though the inexplicable decision of the little kids remaining on the ship even after they reach Jaburo is retained, they get way less screen time). All in all the movies give a sense of much better directorial authority and far less sense that the whole thing is a toy commercial.

@@jumpreport This fellow must either be in denial or Literally blind! As a huge fan of gundam the most generous thing I think I've every heard someone say about the original MSG's visuals is that they're "charming." Gundam is a show that looks like it was made on the cheep in the late fifties or early sixties that came out in the late seventies. It's poor visuals are commonly cited when discussing why the franchisor had such a difficult time gaining traction outside of japan.

Bro you were soooo close but really messed up with the insertion of “focusing more on the characters” - Super robot shows also focused on the characters since the beginning! Even in Mazinger Z Kouji has to confront his responsibilities as the pilot of the only weapon which stands between peace and invasion of the evil ex-Nazi (no joke) scientist Dr Hell. This fake distinction dreamed up by western audience that super robot shows is not about the characters is fake. The of the two sub genres is actually very blurry, at most you can just say the super robot shows yells out their attacks. Also Amuro and Lalah’s attraction is explained by their Newtype bond - you missed a huge part of Newtype “power” being that they can fully understand each other’s thought in like a vulcan mind meld on steroids, so when two Newtypes form this bond it’s like they instantly become soulmates for life, hence Amuro and Lalah were so attached to each other without having to “develop” their relationship in the traditional sense. Also you should watch Zeta Gundam > ZZ Gundam and Char’s Counter Attack which is the release order and are all written by Tomino. Don’t watch chronological order since shows like 08th MS Team and 0083 are like side quests and not written by Tomino and will only distract from Tomino’s core message.

Exist a minor mistake about the canonicy of Origins, many people says its a alternative version of the Universal Century and the people are right about manga, the anime one makes changes match more with the anime continuity specifically the movie trilogy, so Origin its canon. Saying this the video was great, its a shame you can cover all the aspects of the show but its understandable since all topics to talk, one of my favorites characters is Dozle Zabi, in any other show this man probably the goofy villain but here a its competent commander who dies in one the most epic moment i ver see, you're supposition about Char are very in the line who what happens next to him but i don't want to spoil because Char its the caracther with more development in the franchise, only going to say the comparation with Big Boss are pretty accurate. The final thing to say, after the anime Tomino wrote a novel adaptation of the anime with all the elements he can't puts in the anime, for example Amuro and Sayla become a couple in the novel and Amuro pilots a second Gundam after the destruction of the RX-78-2 knows as the RX-78-3 or G3 Gundam for abbreviation. I really want to see you're through about next series and movies you're pretty awesome.

0079 is hard wall for anyone who is interested in UC Gundam. For me, the novels, books and mangas are the way to go (Especially the Origins). Bandai should be pressed to reanimate the entire series because we are approaching 50 years at this point, and the animation flaws and lack of budget at the time are VERY apparent despite the compelling narrative of MSG.
