I think Amuro's experience with technology, his blooming Newtype abilities, and the fact that there has a learning computer that probably had some useful data already loaded in was what allowed him to win his first battle. People forget the Gundam's computer because it rarely comes up.

The last part about why people like mecha reminded me about my journey to being a mecha fan. Mecha is my favourite genre and has been for a very long time, but that wasn't always the case. When I was a kid, I loved Top Gun. It was one of my favourite movies. When I was first getting into anime in the early 2000s, I didn't like mecha. I thought they were a little silly, but then I discovered Macross. I loved it because of the fighter jets, then I quickly came around to giant robots because those fighter jets transformed into them. I think there may be a lot of people who don't get why mecha is awesome at first glance, like I was. They need a familiar point of entry like I got with Macross having fighter jets that transform into giant robots. Most mecha series try very hard to have in-universe reasons why their mecha exists. In Gundam it was because Minervsky particles made long-range combat untenible. In Macross, it was because the humans suspected the Zentraedi were giants. In Patlabor, it was because those mecha were invented as humanoid-like construction machines. To be honest, those explanations don't seem any more ridiculous than the suspensions of disbeliefs you have to accept for the fantastical technology in any other sci-fi franchise.

Gundam is one of the most influential anime of all time. I've been watching a lot of 80s mecha series in the last couple years and you really feel the shadow of Gundam looming over them. It created a massive boom of real robot series that continued throughout the 80s, 90s and into the 2000s when the mecha genre started to falter. Every single post-Gundam mecha show (even super robot shows) owes at the very least a little to Gundam. Gundam took the giant robots from the super robots genre and married it with the more mature and military aspects of anime like Yamato and books like Starship Troopers. Without Gundam, there wouldn't be Macross, Code Geass, Eureka Seven, etc. Even EVA wouldn't exist without Gundam (you can see a lot of Amuro Ray in Shinji Ikari) And Gundam isn't just influential, it is a great timeless story. I can't say I've seen every single Gundam series, movie and OVA, but I have watched a fair few of them. IMO, the OG Gundam is still the best. The themes of loss of innocence against the horrors of war still resonate today.
@ekd18529 ай бұрын
The Gundam franchise and the Mecha genre in general is very underrated and has a lot of appeal regardless Whether your into the real robot genre or super robot genre. Another thing that makes me go back to revisit Gundam or any Mecha series new or old was the Super robot wars games, just seeing all these crossover characters and their series interact is surprisingly good. I also recommend the Super robot wars franchise if you're into Mecha and Tactical RPGs. Basically any mecha series you can think of is in a srw game like Gundam, Mazinger, Getter robo, Code geass, Gaogaigar, Aura Battler dunbine, Gun x Sword, Gunbuster, and many more.

I do find it sad that the mecha genre has lost most of the popularity it had from the 80s up to the mid-late 2000s. I really hope there is a generation-defining mecha series that can kickstart another mecha boom just like what happened with Gundam and EVA.

Mecha is super appealing to me because I operate heavy equipment. After operating excavators for awhile I noticed how all my senses were meshing with the machine and the bucket felt like my hand and the tracks like my feet. I’ve learned how to keep operating smoothly despite bumps and shakes (excavators can get into a cycle of shaking because is shakes you while your holding the sticks thus rocking the sticks).

35:00 and that is funny as hell, Mecha along with Tokusatsu were the birthplace of most tropes, action sequences, "transformations", powers, energy, and even a lot of concepts used very often in "shonen" manga and anime, literally Toriyama was one of the biggest fans of the mecha genre, his mecha designs were inspired by Nagano and Okawara, goku launched energy from his hands and could fly because the Getter robo did that like 20 years before dragon ball, or ultraman as well, people don't even realize how much of the anime, games and movies they like is either based or copied from mecha anime, for them is just "wow cool random stuff" while in reality those were references to kamen rider, Gundam, Space runaway Ideon, Getter robo and so on, It's quite ironic that for example, the Halo and Metal gear solid fandoms seem to hate Gundam and mechas, but their franchises were 80% inspired from gundam and other mechas, all of the "cool dynamic fights" came from macross where the mechas moved that way because they were robots with a lot of thrusters, when you think about it, most "Shonen" characters fight and fly the way they do because they ARE based on mecha fight scenes, they just changed mechas with a teenager with colorful hair because it's easier to draw than a mecha

@@ChrizinatorThat surprises me because I am a nut about both Halo, Metroid, and mecha. I still remember i tried to watch Gundam Wing cause it was from alternate universe also its OP was dope. But the best gundam series for me is Gundam 00. Imagine experience watching a series in HD, huge difference from previous series, vibrant colors, slick gundam design and easily recognisable pilots. Also the story is basically " What if.." situation but based in real world politics. Like middle eastern conflicts, US being US , beefing with Asian bloc , suicide terrorist bombing escalating into bigger war, the civilians POV etc. Season 1 is the best but eventhough season 2 is weaker as they deviate from grounded story into "preparation to communicate with other lifeform" as all bloc unite into an authoritarian regimes, the gundam designs, character development , OPs are saving the series

And was so bad that Bandai basically paid pennies for the property. Now if they could just get themselves out of their UC ass and make some interesting stuff again... I might attempt to watch it again. Sorry.. UC sucks.. It sucked so much they had to make G-Gundam, which did amazing.. Except First Gundam succeeded after its cancellation. The trilogy did well, model kits sold well. Zeta is the highest rated Gundam series in Japan, Char’s Counterattack did well. War in the Pocket is still regarded as the best OVA. Victory ended up the way it did because Tomino was tired of Gundam. Sunrise opted for Alternate Centuries to make money yes but also because there wasn’t much left to do with UC. I don’t know where you’re getting this idea that UC failed despite the fact that we keep getting UC stuff. Before you call me a UC elitist, I love most of the Alternate Universes. Even my least favorite ones have things I like about them. This whole trashing the classics to elevate modern entries is such a dishonest and pathetic argument. Without UC there is no alternate universes. You sound extremely bitter. And it’s clear you’re trying to egg people on. There are better ways to express yourself without sounding like a jerk.
