Great test. I'm a VR dabbler, although I haven't taken the plunge (no pun intended) with MS FS. I'm a numbers nut too, and I've found FPS to be trivial at best, and useless at worst. As you've mentioned, frame-time consistency is what matters the most with VR. The FPS number is an average of an average, and gives no indication of frame-time consistency, and that's the thing we're most sensitive to. The focus on frame-time is the way to go.

Interesting. I had a 5950X and have swapped in a 5800X3D. With X-Plane 11 with triple 1440p displays I saw 17% improvement in framerate at London Heathrow with a 3rd Party 737 (Zibo). Thank you for this detailed breakdown of the X3D. It looks to be an excellent choice. My present system is based on a 9700K o/c 4.8Ghz with GTX1080, and VR is OK at mediocre settings until you get to built up areas similar to where you were flying. The worst offender, however, is Fly Tampa Las Vegas. I fly 50:50 GA under VR (Quest II) and airliners on 2D, and I’m looking to build a new system. Clarkson might shout “Horsepower!” and opt for a 5900X, but would the 5800X3D with its larger cache still be a better choice?

Thank you. I don't have VR, yet your comparison was really helpful anyways. I have the 5800x with an OC applied and not too satisfied with it... it's nice to see that they make progress on hardware. I think i will wait another year before replacing the 5800x, maybe the optimisation with DX12 will help quite a bit more. Running my system with DX12 now for some weeks with good results, yet it's not bringing much performance/fps boost to the table because they invest the gains from DX12 in higher LOD's. Pretty sure we will see improvements, even the RAM speeds in the next years should help quite a bit. DLSS will probably not help at all cpu-wise... THANKS! 💙☀

Thanks for the analysis as I'm having this conversation right now on the MSFS forums. It's difficult to quantify stuttering improvements watching the information you presented. I think stuttering can be measured by comparing the frame-to-frame frametime variations and also comparing the 1% low fps measurements. You can get those values using a capture program like CapFrameX. I'd be interested to see if those charts could quantify the improvement you're seeing.

5800X3D runs couple degrees hotter than 5800X despite using less power. Sandwiching silicon doesn't help with heat conducting, there's two layers on top of the core silicon. Thickness is same but uniform silicon is better conductor. But 5800X3D is tunable and probably better in undervolting compared to 5800X due higher quality silicon.

Timing couldn't have been better, from my perspective. I am just discovering the potential benefits of the "3D" over its lesser counterpart, in my planned system. Yours is the first analysis I've seen talking about frame timings instead of just throwing a tonne of data on the screen. It's also the only one where you've tested ground and less frame-heavy environments, which is more realistic. Could anyone recommend a decent yet no-frills motherboard to house this? I had considered the Gigabyte B550 Gaming X V2 but don't think it supports more than 3200 memory. Is there a close contender on price, that's well worth the price difference that can be recommended? Thank you

Unfortunately this isn't terribly insightful without total frametimes and with the stats we see on the screen only giving framerates with reprojection locked. The descriptions provided about how G2 works with no framerate lock are the most interesting thing here. VR benchmarking is a tricky business, I appreciate any efforts to do it and suggest testing a tool called FCAT VR for the next one.

Im getting Pimax Crystal and rtx 4090. I have old i7 5600k cpu, which cpu do you recommend for all types of vr games? Amd new 7000 or intel latest 13k cpu? Or should i wait for next year for amd 7000 v cache cpu? Thanks brother

just got a msi 3090 ti, have it paired with the R7 3800X. Seeing a lot of shudderings/shimmering in VR with the Quest2. Im pretty sure Im getting CPU bound, do you think upgrading to the 5800x3d would help with that?
@VirtualRealityPilot
@VirtualRealityPilot Жыл бұрын
The shimmering is likely due to the render resolution so might be worth trying to turn that up and over sample the vr display. Often the stuttering is due to photogrammetry being loaded in rather than pc performance - I find it’s worse some days than others

Any reason you did not test anything without reprojection ?
@VirtualRealityPilot
@VirtualRealityPilot 2 жыл бұрын
all the tests with the Reverb G2 were done without reprojection, its far more difficult to display the results (albeit I do talk about them in the vid) as Steam's tools for tracking fps and frame timings are much better - there is a definite bump in performance of average FPS without reprojection

I'm interested in knowing how the 5800x3d would compare to my 5950x / 3090 / Varjo Aero. Would it be even worth going to the 5800x3d from my 5950x, if I'd primarily use it for flight Sim?
@VirtualRealityPilot

You would see approx the same improvement that I saw from the 5800x, more cores doesn't really help with MSFS and VR but the extra cache would.

Hi, I’ve a x3d coupled with a 3090fe, all water cooled, but have been disappointed with the results. Could you share your MB settings ? The 3090 never gets above 73c but there’s clearly something else throttling performance

What's your mainboard, your storage device and your ram type, speed rating, timings and size? I don't play MSFS, but DCS, Fslcon BMS and the IL-2s ( 1946, Great Battles and Cliffs of Dover and most sims need a well rounded system with no big bottlenecking.

To all asking why not compare with 5900x: Well the 5800x is actually a slightly faster cpu for gaming than the 5900x. BTW Not for productivity work but it’s simgaming here. Unless for some rare games that are very efficient at multi core utilisation… but that is not the case for many sims like msfs2020 and DCS…. So the 5800x3d will be faster for these sims than the 5900x and what is most important besides higher fps…better consistency in frames rates so no big drops that really make the visuals stutter as the reviewer emphasised many times, which is very important for high res VR! AMD really made this 3D cpu for us gamers and VR simmers on the AM4 platform. It even brings ryzen to the gaming performance level of intel’s more expensive flagship model, the infamous 12900k and with less power consumption… thank you AMD and many thanks for the clear review!

Where's the comparison to 12900k? Comparing to 5800x is pointless, the Intel 12th gen lineup provides a big boost over the 5800x too, which means buyers are no wiser as to whether or not they should invest in the ageing am4 platform and 5800x3d or spring for pricier Intel 12th gen

Fair point but… for AM4 platform owners, this upgrade is waaayyy more cheaper and power efficient too. And let’s be honest, buying a 12900k now with expensive DDR5 and Ryzen 7000 being launched in Q4, I would wait or go for the cheaper AM4 plus DDR4 ram platform still and if you are intel minded… 12700 is a winner on some many fronts but not for sims or VR ;)

I fly 50:50 GA under VR and airliners on 2D, and I’m looking to build a new system. Clarkson might shout “Horsepower!” and opt for a 5900X, but would the 5800X3D with its larger cache still be a better choice?
