We have a 2022 XLE Toyota hybrid Highlander and in the summer we were getting 36 to 40 miles per gallon when traveling at 55 mph. We do Drive carefully! I love the car with two caveats. There are only two cup holders that are usable in the front which is extremely annoying. And the visibility out the back window is limiting in that the window is very high and if you're trying to back up an open utility trailer up you can't even see it through the back window. When pulling a 2000 lb teardrop trailer we were getting 25 miles per gallon which we feel is very good. The Hybrid drivetrain seems flawless with the exception of a bit of growling noise when accelerating hard. Overall we love it and really appreciate the extremely great fuel economy.

@@matrixist I don't think the engine is loud at 60 or 70 mph. Wind noise is another problem. The roof rack, at least with a sun roof creates a lot of wind noise. I took mine off and the difference was night and day. I also changed to MICHELIN Cross Climate 2 tires and that helped a lot too. Once the weather is better, I'm going to try to identify other noise points. I think the side mirrors are creating a bit too, but the engine is very nice.

Thank you for the look at room in Highlander. I must be a throwback. When we had a full family in tow, it was a no-brainer to do a minivan. Kids go with sliding doors in parking lots and getting things in/out of the middle row is WAY easier. I’d pick Sienna over HH in a heartbeat, esp since it can be had with same eAWD and the same/slightly better fuel eco (accd to EPA…) in AWD configuration. We still have and travel in our Odyssey even though kids seldom come along on our trips now. Comfortable, easy in/out, decent efficiency. Next one likely to be a Sienna. Thanks again!!

I bought my Bronze Edition, 2023 in November 2022. Our first trip was to East Tennessee from Northwest Alabama. We got a combined 39.8 MPG. Our next trip was to Orlando and got a combined 38 MPG. We do not use the 3rd seat, so that is down most of the time. Having the 3rd row up does help with small grocery runs. This is our 4th Highlander and the most comfortable of them all. It's amazing to see 580 miles to the next fill up. There is a lot of tech for sure. Driving around town, we do get an average of 35 MPG. The lane assist is not reliable with long turns. It is however much better than our 2018 LTA. We have the 12.3" Infortainment. The phone charger is in the cubby in front making it more accessible. I spent months testing just about every SUVs but in the end, I stuck with Toyota. I test drove the following: Silverrado (not really a contender but did it anyway). The RAV4 & Prime (not enough space and too low to the ground for us) Hyundai Tucson (space issues as well), Santa Fe (couldn't get the hybrid version in Alabama at the time. Also, it was smaller than the Highlander and less fuel economy in the hybrid system) Chevy Traverse (No Hybrid option, too long, very comfortable though) Hyundai Pallisade (No hybrid options, it was comfortable to drive and the panoramic sunroof was really nice). We went to the Texas State Fair in Dallas and saw the Bronze edition, which I will say looks much better in person than on a screen. We sat in it and talked to the Rep for a good 15 minutes and that's what sold me on the idea of a 4th Highlander. We have taken 2 trips to Orlando, 1 to Chattanooga and several trips to Huntsville. I am beyond pleased with one exception. We were only given 1 key fob and were told Toyota will contact us when the other fob is available. I am still learning all the ins and outs of the new SUV.

Just recently bought a used one just wanted to chime in after a road trip I want to point out this car does great in city full loaded as the computer leans heavier on the electric motors on the highway fulled loaded at an average of 70-75 MPH the MPG dipped from 37.5 to 29 granted I’m quite pleased that my fuel costs were cut in half with the hybrid compared to my V6 2004 Toyota sienna doing the same trip with same cargo/passenger weight and speed. This trip was done on eco mode entirely and I’ve been playing with the sport setting when driving some mountain roads and it’s great to know when you need more power for a uphill over take lane merge it’s there but in eco mode the car does fine doing the same over takes/mergers. If you want the most efficient highway use stick to 50-65 MPH to allow regen braking and vehicle rolling to recharge the battery for the computers to max out MPG anything more than 65 on a incline the battery will constantly be in a stage of trickle charge and tiny usage as the most efficient power choice is the motor doing most of the pulling.

Interested in the Toyota Highlander, Honda CRV, or Hyundai Tucson hybrids. I'm 6'5", so the main reason I think we might go with the Highlander is the size difference. 3rd row being small isn't an issue, it'll be storage 90% of the time. I'm hoping I fit comfortably in the Tucson though as the PHEV model seems like the best deal of all these vehicles, both for the fuel economy and the tax credits.

We opted for the Telluride. Would've loved this fuel economy but not at the expense of my kids comfort in the third row. Toyota desperately needs to update the design.

The one that the Everyday Driver guys looked at a few years ago was really stunning inside, but this just looks like typical Toyota, visually uninspiring but surely built to last. If I was going to spend over 40k on a Toyota it better have a GR badge!

Hi Tom…..awesome overview! Great video. …..thoughts on camping with it? Air mattress with the second and third row seats down…..is it flat or on an incline? One would need the bench seat in the second row?
@DrivenCarReviews Жыл бұрын
I remember it being very flat. Level depends on the grade you park it. A thick enough mattress might even span the gap between the captains chairs with enough rigidity.

I have this car & the motor is so loud because of the Hybrid or so we were told. I thought I was gonna be OK with that but I’ve had it for a month now & it’s so annoying. Guys test drive it a couple of times before committing :( I’m now stuck with a car that I hate! I should have gotten the regular one or Turbo

Coming from an rx350 I’ve been considering this for it’s mpg and third row. What’s not great is the styling, and it’s hard to give up the quietness of the cabin in the rx.
@davejones3348 Жыл бұрын
The styling is fine; beats the UGLY Lexus RX hands-down. It's also very quiet. The 3rd row is fine for children, but we rarely use it; with 3rd row seats folded down, it has LOTS more cargo space than the Lexus (which doesn't even have a 3rd row)

Kia Telluride would be another option for those who can handle less mpg's, maybe more space though

I hit an average of 40.5 mpg in my Camry se hybrid on the way from anahiem to Napa Drove there on one tank of gas and must have averaged 85mph on i5!!! Oftentimes hitting 90mph. And 40.5 when it’s rated at 45 combined driving and 47 highway is pretty damn good, I’m sold on these hybrids l

I can get 29 mpg in the same highway conditions in my Pilot. For me the extra cargo and better AWD is worth the mpg hit.

I really enjoy my 21 Limited AWD V6, but my next one will be a Hybrid now that the Turbo 4 has replaced the fantastic V6. I will give the new Pilot and its V6 a hard look. Korean products might be fine, but I am sticking with Toyota or Honda. Enjoy your reviews!

Anyone can suggest the the differences between Highlander & RAV4 hybrids in terms of driving dynamics, ride comfort and cabin noise? Is it worth the price difference?
@DrivenCarReviews8 ай бұрын
For the most part, I think you'll find the driving dynamics, comfort, and road noise similar between the two. However, Highlander's longer wheelbase gives it an edge. But if you don't need the third row, RAV4's size is more manageable in city traffic. There's also Venza which has a noticeably more comfortable ride that RAV. The only way you'll know what works for you is to test drive them back to back.

Good real world review and great to see Maruko(sp?) I honestly see the Highlander as a Rav4 with more shoulder room and some more space at the back. Kids will grow up and most people plan to keep their toyotas for awhile. I would just go with the Rav4 first then upgrade to the Sienna when the kids grow. Hard to get any hybrid especially in Canada, the Highlander is a 2+ year wait and the Sienna 3+ or not even offered by some dealers!
