The thing about distilled water is that it makes it easier for small particles of metal from the computer components to disperse into because there's a higher concentration gradient between the water and metal than usual. So the distilled water will slowly be filled with conductive minerals and kill the components. It's sort of like shitting yourself until you suffocate or get diseased by it.
@LessThanPeachy

Just keep in mind especially hard water can deposit minerals that are conductive and could short the board when it boots back up. Not only that but the water can corrode the traces, solder, or anything metallic really.

Not true. Minerals like salt need water to be conductive. Just pure salt or any other mineral, in general, is not conducive. Ferrous metals include iron, nickel, chromium, steel alloy, titanium, etc. but afaik, none of these metals are used in PC components. Metals that are used in electronics mostly include Copper, Aluminum and other non-ferrous metals. Ferrous metals rust in contact with Water and Oxygen. Since regular tap, bottled and even ocean water is a bind of 2 Atom Hydrogen and Oxygen, it makes rust accommodate on its surface pretty quickly. No need for electricity. Non-Ferrous metals won't corrode in contact with water. These metals only corrode if salty water connects the anode and the cathode of an electrolytic path. Current flowing through forces salts in the water descent on the anode of the path. The corrosion continues till water runs out of salt. For corrosion to occur on non-ferrous metals you will need Water, Salt, and Electricity. If it's just Water and Electricity without Salt, then corrosion will not occur. If it's Salt and electricity without Water, corrosion will not occur either.

As a side note, water itself is not a problem. Water is not electrically conductive, it is the minerals in it that give trouble. If you do this at home, your results will vary depending on the minerals in your water. One of the big issues is with salinity and iron content, as they seem to kickstart the oxidation process a lot faster the higher their content.

The main reasons water ruins electronics are: • Device was turned on while still wet (and then shorts, which ruins it) • It was salt water (which causes corrosion) If it's fresh water and you don't try to power it on until it's fully dried, it's usually OK. As a side note, 100% pure water would probably be ok to run a computer in since its not conductive. Good luck finding some though.

After wave solder and touch up. Boards are washed in dish washer like machines. Dryed in convection ovens. Sometime we skip this step and use chem wipes and alcohol

People always said that I was crazy, but I fixed a lot of motherboards doing this. When I was facing a motherboard that didn't boot up, after I tried every possible solution, I took the motherboard apart, remove the memory, processor and everything and proceed to clean it up with some detergent, water and a new clean paint brush, after that I took a hair dryer and make sure the board was completely dry on every corner and connector, most of the times actually fixed the issued!
