1:49 - How did life begin?
5:01 - How humans evolved
7:22 - Multiverse?
8:29 - Are we alone in the universe?
10:47 - What makes humans unique?
11:24 - What is the purpose of life?
The Milky way galaxy is composed of up to 400 billion stars, and at least that many planets. Our star, the sun is one of those billions, about a third to halfway out from the galactic center.
And we humans are but one of at least 9 million different forms of life on earth. What does this mean for us? Are humans of any significance, or are we just a burden on our ecosystem? How did human get here? How did life start? How did earth get here? Does the universe have a purpose? Do humans have a purpose?
At first blush it would seem that we are indeed a speck of dust, of no particular cosmic significance. But let’s step back and look at how we got here.
Consider the improbability of not only finding ourselves in this universe, but the formation of such a universe that would have us in the first place.
The universe was born 13.8 billion years ago in a massive expansion - the big bang. It could have expanded too fast such that no structures formed. It could have expanded too slow, such that it re-collapsed into a singularity. But it expanded at just the right rate.
200 million years after the big bang the first stars formed. These were fast burning stars that burned out and exploded in supernovae explosions. They seeded the universe with heavier elements such as carbon, nitrogen, oxygen which had formed in their cores. Our own sun probably formed from such a nebula. The heavier elements that were not consumed by the =the sun, became the leftover debris that formed the planets including earth.
Earth was at such a distance from its star that temperatures allowed water to exist in liquid form on its surface, making it conducive for complex chemicals to form.
Through a process we don’t completely understand yet, molecules came together to form a simple self replicating proto-cell. Over vast time frames chemistry and evolution resulted in complex life forms.
Change the circumstances of earths early history, and we would not be here. Alter the process of natural selection and environmental stress that resulted in larger brained primates to evolve in Africa, and we would not be th intelligent creatures we are today.
And this does not take into account the laws of physics which allowed chemistry to happen in the universe in the first place.
We have won the cosmic lottery. It is not perfect nor the best it could have been for us, but the fact that we exist, even though it is for a moment, is improbable.
We don't know what existed before the Big Bang. Are we presumptuous to assume that ours is the one and only universe? Might there be hundreds of billions of other universes? There is no evidence nor consensus among scientists.
Exoplanet data appears to indicate that most stars have planets orbiting them. If true, it is unlikely that we are the only planet that has life. But, highly intelligent life is likely much more rare. We have seen no evidence that intelligent life like ours exists elsewhere in the universe.
We have not even detected simple life on any other planets in our solar system, let alone exoplanets. If intelligent life forms are common, some would have evolved millions of years ago, or even billions of years ago. If we go by the exponential progress of technology on earth, is seems at least some of these ancient intelligent aliens should have evolved the capability to detect us, communicate with us, or even visit us. This is a weak argument, but it does point to the idea that we are probably rare.
we have come to know in just the past 500 years of our existence. If the distance from central London to times square in New York city represented the total age of the earth, all of recorded human history would be contained within the final 5 meters.
Einstein said the most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible.
What seems to make us different from lifeless objects is that through our senses, our emotions and our brains, we can connect to the rest of the cosmos. And in this regard, no living thing on earth is perhaps so deeply connected.
#purposeoflife
#moteofdust
Does it really matter if we are a speck of dust in the vast space of the cosmos? Do we really need to play make-believe in order to have meaning or purpose? Is our connectedness, and the absurd improbability of our existence not enough?

Only a problem if you think about it, there's no problems in nature everything is just going along. Also the truth is the truth wither you discover it, don't discover it, know it, don't know it , believe it , don't believe it, agree with it or disagree with it, so it really doesn't matter because it's still there anyway. @@aqua_addicts1787 Thanks for that thoughtful response. As simple as that really should be... I unfortunately have this unreasonable and compulsive need to find an acceptable answer to this question (I know, it's pretty silly... I'm a silly person...). Over the years I have learned to accept that I will never truly know why we are experiencing "this". I have dedicated many years studying the origin of life and somehow even managed to complete a doctorate in cell biology because of it. I suppose one coping mechanism that has helped me keep my sanity through it all has been the creation of my own hypothesis for what the true nature of things are (and developing it further as I get inspiration from different ideas and concepts that I get exposure to, and my understanding of things improve). Even though I know I will never prove or disprove my hypothesis, I find comfort in choosing to believe in it.

EXCELLENT Arvin! Thank you for living up to your natural standard. All technology is the result of a conceptual sophistication in our thoughts. For those of us who live immersed in this "bubble bath", how can we inspire it in those who are estranged from it? How can we feed a hungry brain when that brain can't feed a hungry body? This is a very tough problem Arvin. Those who see more can do more. So, are those of us who live in "bubble land" responsible for solving it?

So, if OUR responsibility is to move a solution or solutions forward how do WE start doing that? Where do we begin? Are we fit, willing, ready and prepared to do that? What do YOU say? my question in mind right now is how did conciousness came to be in this universe / reality when everything is just made up of atoms that we know are not alive or thinking and how did it give us emotions
@vhawk1951kl
@vhawk1951kl 8 ай бұрын
How did whose consciousness of what come t be in the universe? Unless you secify whose consciousness and of what, jut forget about consciousness and you something beige and witless like stuff instead, but if all you have is bege and witless probably best just forget about words with the meaning of which you are wholly unfamiliar. Consciousness is a species of knowledge and since you are plainly not up to epistemology, if instead of consciousness you just use know or knowing that would make it a bit easier for you and you may realise that know or knowing in vaccuo are meaningless, so you just identify who is doing the knowing and the knowing of what if you are up to that *All* English- and by extension that dialect of English, American, words containing s c i(sci) in them such as science conscience and conscious come from the latin infinitive sciere - to know and or the first person singular therefof scio - I know, thus there are words which have to do with knowledge or knowing. There is no-repeat No magic in the word consciousness which simply means with_knowledge or the state of knowing, or in baby talk I know that I know, so nothing magical or mysterious about that, eh? so clear now? You stick two Latin words con, meaning with, and scio/sciere(pronounced ski air eh meaning to know or I know and you get con scious or with I know, so it is very simple and involves no special learning save ordinary schoolboy Latin, of which I suppose all but the lower classes to have at least some.

Loved this video! The only part of this video that I question is when you suggest that talking about anything “before” the Big Bang may not be a good question because that’s when time started. In your next breath you suggest that we might be in one of many universes. (And if that is true - each one of those other universes also has their own “time”) If “time” began to exist, then there is certainly a “before” that can be measured by causality - not by any of our clocks - but on a higher cosmic scale on which a universe’s birth, life and death may just be a miniscule segment. It’s premature for us to even suggest that our time scale is the only scale by which causality can be measured. Until there is a lot more evidence that our time is the only possible time, people should not be shutting down any discussion about “before” the Big Bang.

Interesting thoughts on how rare and improbable we are. But rarity doesn't equal valuable or significant. One day you will die. Some generations after that, you will be thought of for the very last time. And with that person's dying thought you will cease to exist and, as far as the universe is concerned, you will never have existed. Your fleeting significance, if it ever was, will be insignificant. That's not to say life is meaningless or pointless, maybe it just means we are asking the wrong questions.

No, no we are not. That’s a strange egotistical philosophical thing that people make up to feel better about themselves. We are a byproduct of the universe, nothing more, nothing less. You can say ‘well we’re inside the universe, made up of atoms from the universe’ and you would be correct. However we’re just a fraction of the universe. We can only attempt to understand ourselves and our relation to the universe as a whole. But we are in no way ‘the universe trying to understand itself’.
@pierfrancescopeperoni
@pierfrancescopeperoni 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheSCPStudio It is not an egoistical thought, it is serious speculation. Probably we are not attempting to understand our own existence in general, but Occam's razor would suggest that we are indeed literally the universe: all the data we have comes from perceiving and sensations, and everything we say being out there is our invention. The models of physics are only a way to organize the information, there are no things such as forces, matter, energy, space and time out there. There is nothing out there, everything is our invention. This way of reasoning was first brought on philosophical debate by Berkley, and it didn't last much probably because of the progresses of classical mechanics, rigorously materialistic, for which we didn't need to think in any other terms than matter. Ernst Mach retook this concept into consideration before modern physics, probably a bit too early. But today's physics is totally different. We don't even think in terms of matter anymore, and we have just many abstract models to organise the information from our perceptions. The abstractness of the outside world is more and more evident, and we must definitely keep an eye on less intuitive ways of thinking.

With your conclusion at the end you are assuming the recognition of "beauty" is of any significance in the first place. Not realizing that "beauty" is just a byproduct of how our neuropsychological systems that evolved to enable us to live in communities, you can stretch it's applications beyond that but you must be aware that it is ill fitted for such a tasks(such as interpreting probabilities as luck), at bare ground the universe has no such meanings, it has no such things as beauty, these are just arbitrary things our minds paints for us to experience, these things wouldn't objectively apply anywhere beyond the human psyche, except maybe for certain animals that evolved along side us, but to any other possible creatures out there, the way we emotionally interpret things would be completely meaningless and non-applicable, we are just stuck in our own emotional delusions, in short we are seeing and interpreting the universe through colored glass.
