Swede here! I'm not sure why we produce so much licorice, as not many Swedes seem to like it. As for the saltiness, we generally use more salt in our food and probably have a higher tolerance for it, which is why we add so much salt, haha. Also, the candies shown in the videos are basically some of the worst ones from Sweden. We have a lot of good chocolate (like Marabou) and many other kinds of delicious sweets! Hope you give Sweden another chance in the future!

Swede here: I do not like any of the salty stuff, so it's not a universally beloved thing. There is a type of candy called "Djungelrvrål" (Jungle roar), and it basically is to saltiness what warheads are to sourness. Just an ungodly blast of salt designed to push the limits of what the human palette can handle. My ex really liked them and had them quite often; I couldn't bring myself to kiss afterwards until she brushed her teeth.

Djungelvrål isn't that salty, it's actually quite mild powder mixture and it's a sweet licorice. Salty girders (salta balkar) ont the other hand has a hole through them so there's more surface area for the mix of sugar and salmiak (ammonium chloride) to cover. Also, the Skipper's Pipe isn't salty, it's a sweet licorice without any salmiak and the salt content is 0.5g/100g (source: the box of Skipper's Pipes on my desk) - a flavor enhancer, but not something you can taste.

The white granular coating on sour candies is crystallized citric acid. It almost feels like the Swedes looked at American sour candies, mistook the coating for salt, and were off to the races.

I flipped through the comments but did not see this: The 'salt' in salty licorice is ammonium chloride. It's not more toxic than sodium chloride but it definitely tastes strange if you're not familiar with it.
@WallsEryx

I think they use that because your body just pisses the ammonium away, so they can blast the candy with that stuff. Sodium, on the other hand, fucks your blood pressure up.

As a Swede, it should be noted that Sweden in particular I believe favors salty flavors in Candy (not with all things, we got some chocolate stuff obviously). Licorice in particular is fairly popular. Really (I say this before finishing video) what I'd say is that our candy is worse than our pastries by quite a bit (which is probably due to Fika). I've no idea where you found the M.A.C. Black Cola...I've never heard of that before now. Though based on that you describe that you ordered an orangey flavor I assume you're talking about Trocadero?
@Peebs
@Peebs 4 ай бұрын
Yeah as I mentioned I don't like salty sweets - at least not fruity and salty sweets. Some of them like the salty twins though were just so over the top with the saltiness I can hardly believe anyone could enjoy it? LOL. The stuff like the Cool Guys were good though once I got used to it. I've looked up more Swedish candy since recording, and there was def some other chocolates that looked good. The main chocolate brands in the US aren't very good sadly, so I like tasting some from other countries. UK and AU had some good ones. Should have gotten more Swedish chocolates w/o the licorice filling. And I can't remember what orange flavored soda I originally ordered. It might have been Trocadero? M.A.C. does appear to be a Swedish soda though. It wasn't bad. Our soda is too sweet here. Cheers!

@@Peebs I get that thing with salty tbh, I'm not a fan of Licorice myself (in fact I've a strong sweet tooth in addition to enjoying some mild salty flavors). I'd say from memory testing out some of the candies you had tested, they would be on milder side. And if you ever order Swedish candy again and just want something that is at least sweeter than the usual salty I'd recommend Kexchoklad (just a type of chocolate) or "Ahlgrens bilar" (tiny candy cars essentially). As like you said it would've helped to have less licorice for a first try. It can be hard to remember understandably. I can only think of a few sodas that could remind someone of orange flavor, Trocadero being a personal favorite but may be wrong. Other ones that could've been were: "Zingo" or "Nygårda Apelsin". Anyway cheers, and have a continued good evening/day/whatever-part-of-day it is over at you presently.

As a Swede, i have to say…this was kinda disappointing of a collection. :/ If you look at Sweden’s main/most favoured candy, these DO NOT make it on the list. I'd even wager the majority of Sweden prefere sweetnes over saltyness (i don't know what the “Swedish” comments are yapping about, on how we eat that much salty licorice). Salty licorice? Give it to Finland. (om du gillar Hockey-Pucken så sök hjälp) A perfectly curated Swedish Candy list would look something more like this: Daim Japp Dumle Ahlgres Bilar✨ Cloetta Kex Choklad ✨✨✨ Gränna Polka Pim Pim Bubblizz Marabou Mjölkchoklad Center ✨✨ Geléhallon Gott & Blandat I didn't include any licorice, as you did eat all of them now lol. However, i'd have bought the Skipper’s Pipe in a big pack, instead of the version in single packages, and preferebaly without the pink stuff on (ew), since they taste different. *Also i don't know shat happened to your Plopp nor Kola Snören. Plopp doesn't taste licorice (at least not as i'm aware off???), and the Kola Snören i guess can be a little sticky, but i don't think they taste licorice aswell 😂. Anyways, might've been after taste from your previous licorice taste. Fun to see how different people from different nations appreciate foods 😁👍

apparently the US (and i assume Canada too) puts more sugar in everything than anywhere in europe even the same product so like fanta orange pop. So it makes sense that any foreign candy would seem bland in comparison
@corey2232

But the US has a ton of candy varieties, many with much less sugar. His problem isn't the sugar content - it's the flavors (mostly licorice) and the high salt content.

20:58 I'm from Finland and we have a lot of same candies here. And yes, I actually kids like these candies, but there are also actually sweet candies, so not all of them are like these. Opinnion of salty licorice is like pretty divided some like and some don't. Actually my Mom is Swedish and she hates Salmiakki (Finnish salty licorice) and I don't like swedish licorice that much xD We finns like to offer these candies to foreigners, especially salmiakki and our tar-flavored candies :D

Those Plopps you're eating aren't the salty licorice variant. Those are ordinary Plopp, which are just filled with plain old caramel sauce.

It's incredible that you managed to find all of the candy that is on the universal avoid list lmao, like genuinely impressive?? How did you find out about kolasnöre before daim, before bilar-- before marabou????? The candies you were eating in this video are like, the shit that gets stuck to the bottom of the bargain bin. You never buy it out of your own voliton, you get it from cheap goodie bags at childrens birthday parties and then begrudgingly eat it over the course of a month because you don't want to throw away candy.

As a chilean born in Sweden: i love liquorice. It's the best thing ever. But am shocked when i meet full blooded swedes who hates it. Also I haven't seen some of the candies in the video. Unless they've come out the last 4 years while I've been living abroad. And also, unfortunately some candy quality has gone down hill so it doesn't taste what it's supposed to be sadly.

As a swede, some of the candy you found (the tools and the unicorn poop) aren't considered classics or anything special (I also dislike the poops), but kola snören (that really shouldnt taste like liquorice or be thay sticky?) is a certified classic! And of course all the salt liquorice is normal, but its so good y'all are just weak! /s Also I have no idea what that soda is?

The Americans don't know what liquorice actually is. To them it's a category of candy similar to snören, which comes in "red" and "black" varieties, with the black one actually being flavoured with liquorice. (Twizzlers is an example of this) So when he says "it's like liquorice" he just means that it reminds him of liquorice ropes, which are basically the same as snören. Not that they have the flavour of the liquorice root.

As soon as I saw it was Sweden, I knew there would be a lot of salt and licorice. I grew up in a finnish-american area and they have very similar candies and tastes. They didn't get a lot of sugar so they had to turn to alternatives for flavors. Real berries and fruit were common as well, rather than American style candies like Blue Raspberry Whatever

Yeah we apparently love "blue" flavored candy here LOL. I've never cared for it that much personally. Our raspberry flavors are usually not that good either, imo.

Hi Peebs! My dad and his sisters are half Finnish and half German, and they loooove black licorice, and even the salty licorice. In Finland, there's a black licorice called Salmiakki, and it super salty! I've tried it, but definitely didn't care for it. When one of our relatives from Finland visited us a couple years ago, he brought a bottle of Salmiakki liquor, and it tasted much better than the candy, to my surprise. And switching to German, have you thought about doing a Haribo gummy candy video?

That Plopp you tried first was the original version with some sort of caramel/toffee-filling, so they must've given you the wrong description since Plopp has a salty licorice version, regardless it's rather bland imo. Also them sending MAC Black Cola instead of MAC Black Orange is a goddamn war crime!

i dont know why european candies tend to have saltier or bitter flavors but i dont complain. I had some delicious wine gums in spain that were half fruit gum and half licorice with a slight salt aftertaste. The first few gums were wierd but then i couldnt stop eating them, they were delicious.
