In Minnesota there is an organization called Second Harvest that goes around to grocery stores and collects all the food they would normally throw away. They then distribute it to food pantries around the state and western Wisconsin.

The food waste is something I will never understand! So at my daughter’s school they can’t just go through the line and only get what they want to eat. For example: if she only wants a muffin she has to get a juice, a milk, and a fruit. And guess what happens to the unopened juices and items? You guessed it...trash! I’ve watched bags and bags of stuff being thrown out and it just kills me! My daughter takes her juices with her home. 😂 Everyday her book bag has juice boxes in it. There’s bound to be another way to use up food. There’s plenty of animals that would eat it.

Hey Steph and Steven, on my way home from work tonight I did my very 1st dumpster dive at Ace hardware and dollar tree. At Ace I found some screen that I needed to repair a window screen and dollar tree makeup, nail polish, bath salts. Also someone threw out personal trash in dollar trees and I got a hairdryer with all attachments (and it works) and a Barbie. Got to get a better grabbed though. Thanks for the encouragement . I will do it more.... God bless

Oh that makes me sick to see so many apples.. apples do not go bad for a very long time. I am thankful to be gifted with boxes like that of fruit every few months and it makes wonderful apple sauce, apple butter, apple slices I do "Canning" and here in Ohio it's now Winter and I am enjoying all the fruits like that I was gifted. Today 2-27-2020 I was gifted a bushel of pears and 12 pineapples. Tomorrow I will be canning pineapple slices and sliced pears in Cinnamon Yum! These are all less than perfect fruit that mainstream commercial stores wouldn't want because they aren't pretty and perfect and they get donated to the food pantries I am very thankful to have it in my pantries. We had the flu last week and I had been given a lot of fresh oranges awhile back, I juiced them and froze in plastic bottles.. perfect for the Vitamin C we needed while down with the flu. Don't throw food out that can be used Corporate America. Sigh. BTW.. I will be teaching Free classes in the spring on how to Can and Preserve to low income families.

When my husband worked at the grocery store he took the garbage out but by passed the dumpster and put it into the car. What we didn't keep went to his sister for their chickens, ducks and geese. We had a opossum, raccoon and skunk that lived around by us that also got plenty of treats. Now that store gives left over produce to the food pantry.

The rich that owns these big corporate stores don't care about the hungry, they just care about making money.
@lmp89326 жыл бұрын
The food wastage is criminal, it happens here in Australia too but not quite on the scale (that I have seen). Most of the food stores around where I live have reduced price bins and I for one will buy stuff from them e.g. gluten free bread reduced from$6.69 to $1.99 because the use by date is today - it goes in the freezer. Yoghurt, vacuum packed stuff, Fruit and veg can be used the same or next day or frozen, raw or cooked. It helps keep the food bills down too if you are on a strict budget. I would've taken a few bags of apples and turned them into apple sauce or pie filling.....

I use to have chickens in my backyard. Our local grocery store would put out produce that was destined for the dumpster for people to come and get if they wanted to. We would go and get it. Whatever was not something we wanted to eat we gave to our chickens. They loved it. All the citrus we would juice and freeze in ice cube trays. I imagine with apples you can even make applesauce.

Stuff that most families with multiple children, can't afford, so instead of a good piece of fruit with PB&J, they have to put a Little Debbie, that awhole box is only 99 cents! Makes me sad & angry Seven & Steph!!! Watch the documentaries about the Apalachian families in Eastern Kentucky, North Eastern Tennessee and closer like in Virginia and other Apalachian places at Christmas time, no food, coats, shoes, toys or gifts, not even a tree and 1 family with 5 or 6 kids, starving, no electricity & the fathers are working their butts off in the coal mines that are still open, for hardly enough to keep a roof over their heads!!! And these places throw all of that away?? 🙁😢😡

I was a produce manager at a big grocer for a long time and there is so much waste. We throw away like 10% of inventory everyday. We would always mark it all down before it went to the food bank. The only reason we would throw that much of a single item out is because of a recall.

I went to a dumpster up here in Northern Canada (at a drug store chain) a few days ago and one of the staff must have spent hours and hours cutting up granola bars, bags of chips, cereal, juices and you name it. I just can't believe anyone would do that. The food bank in our area takes things up to a year past the BB date. Would it have killed them to just leave it and let some homeless person take it?
