Yep, trapping can work. I have done it in sparring against Kenpo black belt level fighters and a guy in the Army who was at a high level of Kung Fu. It's advantage is the quickness and it confuses them for a split second as you go on the offensive from close range. Paul Vunak shows excellent demonstrations of what to do from the trapping range and finish them off quickly with elbows, knees and headbutts. You can overwhelm them. It does take a high level of skill to tie his arms up. And although that will probably rarely happen it is still good to know. And just imagine the look of surprise on your opponents face as you do it to him.

JKD sets up the reference point for training the movements. This is to train you to start the trap at the right position, ie, when you reach trapping range. The notion that JKD starts a match from a reference point is from the movies.

You go for his right arm and he punches you with his left arm right away before you bring your other arm around. Wing Chun is about efficiency, why are you going for his arm unnecessarily, opening yourself up to a facial attack? Genuine question
