You give two similies of a fish tank which I think are really helpful when I am teaching new fish keepers. A fish tank is also like the fish tank toilet and a filter is like the garbage bag. The change in discussion from a cycled tank to a seasoned tank has also been incredibly helpful.

I dont run heaters or filters in my tanks. Only return pumps for flow. Never had an issues and my tanks are heavily planted so nitrates dont spike. I have gone 6 months without water changes and tested my water at perfect conditions. Once you master the nitrogen cycle like really understand it. Then you can have what I would consider more advanced setups but lower maintence. I even run CO2 in some of my tanks too. No algae, no cyano, no dinos. I have mastered the balance. That is the goal

How do you combat pH dip tho?
@Kenneth91619 Жыл бұрын
@@lukenyanti ph, temp and dissolved o2 swing is normal. I took a field trip to costa rica and thats when I knew heaters were a scam. Temps can be as cool as 65F at night and a high of 76F during the day. pH swing .5 throughout the day and dry and wet season the swing is massive. If your tank is well balanced and your fish are healthy they will be fine just like in the wild. I will say though new fish will be stressed and i recommend a QT tank for all new fish. This is where ph and temp shouldnt Fluctuate until they are Acclamated and healthy.

What’s your best set up (tank plants fish) and what would you recommend for a filter less 10 gallon
@Kenneth91619 Жыл бұрын
@@kevincherry6037 my favorite is my 30 gallon paladarium. Its jungle theme with sand, small med and large smooth rainbow river stones. I have over 15 plant species both aquatic and terrestrial. Im running x2 Terra Sky LEDs and x2 Fluval plant 3.0 leds. I have all nano fish chili rasbora, celestial pearl danios, neon blue rasboras, male koi betta. Mixed neocaridina shrimp and I cull the ones that lose color. I even have a purple neocaridina which is super rare. I want to try and refine that line if possible. As far as a 10 gallon. I would stick with nano fish and ship because he becomes increasing more difficult to have balance with bigger fish since your beneficial baterial will need more surface area to Colonize. Try and grow some about water plants too that will help with the learning curve and help you maintain a easier balance. Best advice is choose good hardscape and a deep enough substrate 2" plus. Good flow power heads or simple return pumps if your good at building in tank sump to hide said pump. Plant heavy to begin with that is 1000% going to help you battle algae and in-balances in the nitrogen cycle. Keep up with your water changes at first and after 3 months you can cut back and eventually if you have enough plants and a good balance meaning not overcrowding with too many fish or over feeding. Perfect dialed in light cycle. You can stop doing water changes and just top off with distilled or 0 TDS water. It takes time to learn and dont get discouraged if you fail first time. I have almost 20 years of experience so for me its easy. You will get there and its super rewarding.

Well, as you say, all our aquariums have a filter whether we've bought mechanical filtration and added to it or not, and I love having no extras, but depending on the tank, I will, and I never advice new aquarists to start without added filtration because they don't have the experienced eyes to catch emerging issues yet, and the added filter mass gives them a bit of a time buffer to recognise those issues before it's too late and time to react properly, and have +1 experience and the good feeling of having turned things around. Then when they have a bit more time under their belt, of they start googling or asking, I'll happily talk to them about how to maximize their possibilities of a great experience without added filtration. 😊

Hi Amanda, I am trying to do a no filter tank, my main issue is the noise. How do you manage with the water flow? Can your fish tank survive without water flow?
@Amanda-uc5jq Жыл бұрын
@@JavierPerez-qy7lv I have a power head down near the bottom of one tank but I also have fish at every level of the tanks so they move the water as well. In one tank I have a large school of Congo tetras and they zoom around the whole mid and top level, large school of cories down the bottom who are always on the move as well. If it’s just noise that bothers you UV filters are really quiet and you can set the flow to be quite powerful (obviously they aren’t meant to filter things out of the water although most do have some sponge) internal filter’s are usually quiet just push them down under the water

A 210g sump with an enormous and undisturbed, bacteria factory under my 450g aquarium is my logic. It allows me space for a large return pump and added water volume and heaters out of tank. My 75g sump sits beneath my 300g aquarium I like the ability to stock as I see fit. In a minimalistic approach regarding stocking, I can see your point, somewhat.
