Opinion: As a former trainer of patrol dogs & handlers going back as far as the 1970'S --- but to have been away from it for years and thinking about moving back into it, but in different way. I an happy to discovered Hans here on KZbin just from listening to Hans talk. I can see he's the old pro --- and he has my utmost respect and listening to him I have begin learn much I had not known.

My dogs are the same way. They don't fight because even the smallest grumble is addressed. I'm "old-fashioned", and I expect no BS.

This makes sense why my not intact older dog gets into fights with my younger intact dog. I have been able to keep them from fighting since the first few fights. I stupidly thought I could bring home an extremely dominant male Neo puppy with my old boy since he wasn't intact. Next one is definitely going to be female

I have one working female GSD and people always ask me if I will get another pet dog. I always say no, because it is not fair to the pet dog that the working one gets to go with me all the time. I know this would cause some intense jealousy and the minute I left the two alone, there would be a pretty serious fight. I don't even consider training the next dog until the current working dog gives me all the signs they don't want to work anymore.

Yes! I didn't realize how b ig of a problem that can be until I got my service dog a couple years ago and I have other dogs in the home and it is definitely a recognition from them that he gets to go everywhere with Mom and he gets to do anything he wants with Mom and we don't have the same privilege so I have to be sure to give them all a job that they can feel proud of themselves and I can show them that I'm proud of them so that they also feel like they have something but you have to be creative in order for them to not be escalating and having bigger issues. If I'm not on top of my crap then I know there will be issues.

Me and my Shep got attacked by an off leash/OFF DUTY K9 at the park in my city. She needed repair surgery. Pretty traumatizing. I never expected my self to freeze up because i always said i would fight! but i was knocked down and i blacked out for a moment because the dog hit me hard and went straight for my dog. When I had two dogs they fought about two times and they grew up together 8 weeks pups. I broke them up and got bit by my own pup and WOW it hurt.

Oh so glad this came onto my recommended. I’m dealing with two 2yo female dogs and new intact 8 month puppy (same parents, Australian cattle dogs). They get along 95% of the time, but man if the puppy takes it too far then it’s all hell breaking loose. I’m getting better at catching the build up but phew 😤 glad to hear that the crating routine I’ve been instinctively doing is the right method.

This is a VERY important video and timely for us. We have 3 elderly dogs (2 Collie M and 1 black lab F) and then rescued 3, an older F hound, an 18mo old GSD/BM F and a 4 mo old Pit cross M. Everyone neutered and all was calm and well…until it wasn’t. The Pit cross, who was originally at the bottom of the totem pole became an adult and dramatically decided he was THE MAN with our two older Collies. Though Collies are called a soft mouth breed, they were skilled at fighting each other (ah yes, that sibling syndrome). It’s exactly as you said, when a Pit type attacks, all bets are off. After having an open kind of dog family, we instantly began the (annoying but so important) crate routines and in different rooms. We KNOW that our young Pit could easily kill one or both of those old male Collies which is never going to happen. We KNOW we could haul every dog off another in a fight except that Pit cross, he would never let go, so, a HUGE THANK YOU for explaining the bully stick to tickle the throat. Knowing about that stick could make the difference between a dog staying alive or not in an accidental fight. How long should that stick be? I’m wondering if I was desperate can I grab a wooden stirring spoon like you use in a big pot? I also appreciated the warning to stop the dog posturing when their tails start wagging straight up. My female shepherd, who everyone thinks is very submissive, is actually the alpha (the GSD rescue and I believe she was hit as a puppy, she was owner surrendered). She does the mounted tail wagging but only to remind them she’s boss. Months ago, when they tried to dominate her she went after them SO FAST and put them on the ground in a flash. When she fights she’s like a snake,slithering around them with those fangs everywhere at once. When they submit she walks away. I shouldn’t be impressed but I am 😅. Thank god they have a thick ruff because she does remind them she’s boss every so often. There is no doubt she knows I’m the alpha, I train/work her every day, but I will take your advice and be MORE alpha by not letting her start anything when I see the signs. Great video! ❤

Somehow my elderly uncle ended up at my house while we were gone and in his confused mind he let all 5 of our dogs out of their rooms and put them all in a small room with him where there are antlers and bones in a basket. None of mine resource guard however he had his female bully with him who does. Needless to say his dog died and he got to see a pack fight and will never underestimate my dogs again or ask why I'm so strict, "mean" he says.... even when I have a good management system there is always that one situation u don't prepare for. Luckily all mine are good with only a few punctures. His dog didn't deserve to go out that way. I've tried to get him to understand this for years. At the end of the day he doesn't care and gets a little amused at the whole situation it seems. I banned him from my house of course! Respect your elders until...

What about when you have one male and bring a male puppy? Doesn't the older dog establish a higher position over the puppy, and they shouldn't fight later? I'm just speculating, and I'm curious about your opinion.
@LadyGeckoFoot9 ай бұрын
My dogs aren't left alone when I'm not home. They're excellent in general, but they know that I'm 100% alpha anywhere we are. They respect that, and I'm very strict about it. I don't allow dominance behavior among any of the dogs.
@juliehackett10259 ай бұрын
Older dog doesn't necessarily have dominance just because he's older. My younger dog has dominance over my older dog now and has since he hit puberty

Until that puppy hits a year or a year and a half old and then it's time to change the hierarchy and you're going to have big problems

One of my males won't tolerate any other male. He's okay with a puppy and will play and be best buddies until the puppy is around 15 months then he is done with it.

@pittymama45009 ай бұрын
Sounds like you're probably experienced to know that you should not just put these two together... That puppy has to feel safe to become a dog confident enough to do protection. It's very easy to mess up the nerves on a dog that young when you have a dog that might go crazy even just the older dog barking and lunging towards that puppy is going to be traumatized and cause problems in his confidence and in his ignoring other dogs.
@pittymama45009 ай бұрын
I am just curious as to why you would bring a puppy into that situation in the first place when you know that your first dog, whom you have an obligation to first, doesn't like other dogs? You are going to have to become no nonsense with that older dog and you mean business because you're the boss and he can't do anything without your permission. If you don't do that then you're going to have major problems coming in the future

I think people dont no the difrence between dogs fighting with each other vs 1 dog going and mauling another example person with on lead collie and a off lead dog runs over ant starts mauling it then if you have a slip lead then it can work
@pittymama45009 ай бұрын
Why do you think that an off leash dog running up is always going to be mauling? That's a very individual situation thing to be putting an umbrella over. I guarantee you that it is a very rare situation that the off leash dog really wants to maul yours. Fightscan break out between any dogs. More than likely that off leash dog just didn't think about it before they ran up

My Boerboel male does not see the neutered female Africanis dog as a female he treats her as if she is a male total hate for the neutered dog he will also not allow this neutered dog to eat in his prescence. However the male Boerboel fully accepts the intact female German Shepherd he even lets her eat infront of him after he has eaten and lets her sleep near him etc. The neutered female Africanis dog is a dominant type dog, neutering her did not change her.
@Izamota-q5v3 ай бұрын
Recent studies have shown neutering a dominant or aggressive female tends to make them worse - While neutering a male either makes them better or does nothing.
@Ramaganjaman2473 ай бұрын
My friend. Did you say Male and female are de sexed or aren’t ? Does it matter if I have one female de sexed And a male shepherd the same ? I have watched the video My dogs are just different sizes My female sharpie is 8 years and she’s aggressive towards females I have a male gsd on the way
@hans-alpinek9real3 ай бұрын
Spaying and neutering will not or may not help much. Keep[ the dogs of the same sex separated - especially if you are not present. Spayed or neutered or not.
