This Q&A came from Ed Frawley's 2024 new online course "Train Your Dog to COME When Called." There are 57 Videos totaling over 4 hours content to watch. It's our feeling that everyone learns differently, some learn by watching videos or live seminars, while others prefer to read written material. Our course content covers both methods.
The recall is the most important behavior our dogs must learn. The COME command is not a conditional behavior. This means when the training is finished, the dog doesn't get to choose whether or not it wants to obey. It learns that it must come every time or it will suffer serious consequences. This is the only command we approach in this manner.

I must be missing something but if the dog is playing keep away how do you approach the dog, catch it and then correct it?

I use a long line for recall training on our walk. Sometimes he doesn’t come and I need to pull to let him know he has to come. He comes but what I’m not sure about is if I can still give treats in that occasion or I shouldn’t if I needed to pull. I try to create positive reinforcement whenever he comes so usually I give one. But is it better not to give if he didn’t come on the first command??

You have skipped training steps. Its good that you want tio use reward based training, but like any system if you skip training steps and then use part of the system at the wrong time with the wrong training tiy end upo with problems. Thats whats happened with you. My online dog training program (see the link in the description) its over 4 hours long. I cant drill it down to an answer in KZbin to train you. Sorry

What do you mean by “heaven and earth” coming down on the dog please? I understand what you’re saying about gong and getting the dog, but when you say correct the hell out of it back to spot of calling, what sort of correction do you mean at that point please? And thank you 🙂

This depends on the dog. The amount of pressure put on a dog depends on the dogs age, its training level, the handlers training level, what the dog was facing in the environment. But the correction needs to be at thats dogs level of correction that it will remember it the next time is refuses to come when called. But the bottom line 95% of the time this is a handler mistake. If you cant call your dog back from a distraction - you have no reason to have t he dog be off leash or on a long line. I handle determining pressure in my course. I cant train you thru KZbin.; Sorry

@@100kazzzaa Thank you I appreciate it. Even though I release the course about 10 days ago - I am still adding content. We filmed additional footage this week on the steps for building a "REFLEXIVE RECALL" Ill get them edited and in to the course this weekend. They are very good. The simple fact that you did this confirms my opinion that its worth commenting on my KZbin channel.

Existential food training - - - only feed the dog when ur on a walk and it comes to u no more food in a bowl no more food except to pay the dog for the recall

Thats OK for some dogs, not all dogs. I make this very clear in my recall course. There are no HARD AND FAST RULES that apply to every dog and trainer.
