It was such a pain to do because I didn’t shoot it with a composite in mind so they weren’t aligned all nicely! Essentially I just put one over the top of the other, lined and sized them to the stump as best I possibly could, then masked the top one until it kind of matched ok. I spent so much time on making sure the stump was ok that I missed something quite important. Wonder if anyone spots it 🤓

We have a full online course over on the website for a step by step through the complex style workflow (Online Advances Outdoor Canine Portrait Course - a mouthful, I know!). As for the lens, at the start I share the kit in use, on this occasion it's a 70200 2.8 GM lens.

I didn’t have the 105 at the time, but to be fair, if I’m in a new location and scouting about, I tend to have the trusty flexible 70-200 on as a first call :)

@ThatPhotographySpot4 жыл бұрын
Hey do you mean at the start? It's not a phone it's a live field monitor, the plan was for Dan to record the monitor so you guys could see through the lens exactly what I see, including settings and depth of field, but all you could see were reflections from the trees around us so we gave up! 🙈

What do you do on a shoot like this if the sun is blaring and no colours so you can't wait for it to get soft? swap locations, fix in post or something else?
@ThatPhotographySpot4 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the reason for the shoot, the feasibility of a re-shoot and other factors. Usually i would try to reschedule if shade is really absolutely not anywhere to be seen. However, in another shoot video you can see it was sunny and the sun spots were edited out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHvCeIiZl5aNl8k

Hi, how long would you say it takes to edit each photo and what do you use to edit! +Love your videos!

Thanks Lena! It depends really on the edit, these ones were about an hour each I think? I have a good workflow now though with my own actions set up so no more than 30 minutes a photo now :)

Just curious on why you are doIng a white balance check instead of using auto WB since it’s always changing? I assume you’re going to be bringing these photos into Photoshop or Lightroom where you can change the White Balance afterwards, so I would think it really wouldn’t matter.
@ThatPhotographySpot4 жыл бұрын
As you’ll know, auto white balance doesn’t get the white balance right as it takes an average of what is in the scene so if you’re photographing in lots of green, the white balance will shift to magenta to compensate for the mass of green in view. Getting into the habit of using a card regularly throughout a shoot with a dog that is neither black nor white gives the best middle ground to getting colour right in editing. With red dogs specifically, and sable too, their colour changes depending on the type and strength of light, reflecting off the hairs. Most people aren’t great at guessing white balance so learning the habit of using a card to get a starting point is never a bad thing!
@blackberryjamchicago2 жыл бұрын
White balance is really irrelevant if you're bringing it into Photoshop or Lightroom. It can be white balanced afterwards.

How the heck do you get the eyes so clear and focused😅 I'm struggling with my "white" golden retriever with next to black eyes, the only yime I get even close to bringing life to his eyes is when I use a flash.. Any advice? Great video btw👌
@ThatPhotographySpot4 жыл бұрын
Main thing with a dark eyed dog (these two are light eyed, amber which is great!) is to ensure there are always catchlights in the eye. You'll have to expose for the coat of your Golden, so still do that, but if you can try to ensure there's always catch lights it shouldn't be too hard to bring a little more back in post! There are a couple of tutorials that might help you on the channel for generally brightening the eyes though, I'll link to the blog posts for ease, hope that's ok: This is an old video, but I still use the brush now: www.thatdogspot.co.uk/setting-up-the-sharpen-eyes-brush-in-lightroom/ These three videos in this post are full edits, but each one works the eyes in similar but slightly different ways. Consider looking at the golden doodle puppy video and skipping past the background removal to the eye section: www.thatdogspot.co.uk/full-photograph-edits-the-video-list/ Hope those help!

What ratio do you shoot in? I'm currently shooting 2:3 but then I'm really limited when it comes to frame sizing. :( x
@ThatPhotographySpot4 жыл бұрын
Always shoot in 3:2. Only ever crop really if the client wants a product that is that size but to be honest, I've never had an issue finding framers or print labs 🤷♀️Try Digitalab 🤓
@Mrjinkz4 жыл бұрын
@@ThatPhotographySpot Yeah, but then aren't you limited to only frame sizes that fit into the 3:2 ratio? such as 12x18, 16x24, etc. Any other sizes I need to crop my images. x
@ThatPhotographySpot4 жыл бұрын
I choose the sizes I offer my clients. They have 3 to choose from. All fit 3:2. In any case, it's far easier compositionally to take the sides off a 3:2 than to take the top and bottom off of a 4:5.

Loved this video thanks! Can I ask what the monitor was attached to your camera at the beginning is and the purpose?
@ThatPhotographySpot4 жыл бұрын
Sure it's just a field monitor, the plan was for Dan to video the monitor because you see exactly what I see through the lens via the EVF, inc depth of field, exposure, everything. Sadly, all you could see when we tried was reflections of the entire forest and Dan, so we gave up and took it off!
