Unfortunately this has been going on for years. 20 years ago someone came on our property while I was home. Pepper sprayed our Male boxer, threw him in their truck and took off before I could get outside. Thank the Lord, our boxer jumped his captors 6 and 1/2 foot fence and traveled 6 miles to get home. He was only a mile from home when someone spotted him and called me. My poor boy had burns all over his face from the pepper spray and rope burns on his body. I thank God for quick healing to him💕

Some bi&%$ maced our Boxer and tied a telephone wire around his neck. She almost had him in her car. Amazing! But, Sonny was still a pup. Our neighbor saw this and saved our sweet pup. He was not safe in our own yard, and after that I never allowed another attempt. We locked the gate, and we made sure someone was close by or watching while Sonny was out there. The woman got away, but we had our dog. What a world.

This started in our area more than 20 years ago. People would drive around in a minivan snatching popular breeds out of backyards, then force them to breed to sell the puppies. Lately it has been puppies being stolen from home break-ins or if the puppy was left alone in a car, (which is reprehensible in it of itself.) Small and toy breeds are the favorite targets of this recent crime wave. Also for those looking to buy or adopt a puppy....NEVER EVER BUY ONE ONLINE, IE; FACEBOOK, CRAIG'S LIST, ETC... These are dogs that are most likely stolen pets or the product of backyard breeders that often come with serious health problems. I will never understand why people keep doing this when there are so many other, safer and legal ways to acquire a pet.

channel-z ...you’re right! I’ve approached people to educate them. I carry a letter that I’ve typed up that explains the dangers of leaving pets unattended. I put it on their windshield. Some people don’t know. Others don’t care. I figure if I confront them with information it might make them think twice before doing it next time, even if they’re too embarrassed to admit it that day.

I work in animal rescue. They also steal them to use for bait dogs in dog fighting. This is heartbreaking because they will throw them into the dog fight to teach their fighter dogs how to win. You can imagine how they suffer when that happens. I carry copies of a letter with me that explains the dangers of leaving your pet alone in the car, and I stick it on their windshield. Some people have no idea how evil some people can be. Sadly, in animal rescue you find that out really quickly. I will sit and watch an animal that’s alone till the owner comes out. Pets rely on their owners keeping them safe. Thank you, Dr. Jones. Education is crucial!

I live out in the country, and my cocker spaniel was watching in the front yard, and someone tried to take her, not knowing I was watching her around the corner. Thank God she is cautious of people... but my new pup would have ran right up to them for kisses. So I never leave them unattended. Never ever and I live out in the country. IN the Baltimore area, the dog fighters will steal your dog to use it as a BAIT dog. It is a terrifying reality to consider when your husky decides take off running. They work in groups of two - the first walks by, and if they see an available dog, they stick an index card - or some type of 'flag' in your fence. This is an coded alert to the 2nd person with information about the dog and 'the situation' - i.e dog is alone, owner is outside, there are two dogs..... The second person comes by and grabs the dog and they vanish. My understanding is that they prefer pit bulls for their purposes, but other dogs will also suffice. Local vets will often post warnings. A large dog fighting ring took over 3 years to investigate. They uncovered all the strenuous exercise and training equipment, heavy weighted chains, treadmills, cages, fighting rings, breeding apparatuses... Several states were involved. LOTS of dead and mutilated dogs were found in trashcans, shallow graves and ditches. The Baltimore City State's Attorney, Marilyn Mosby, dropped the charges. I have never forgiven her.

I don't know how to express how disturbingly horrifying this is. I don't think I would ever get over it if someone stole my pampered baby boy and used him as bait for fighting, and I've seen pictures of the poor dogs that live, to only be used again and again until they are killed and die from neglect. Its absolutely dreadful and people who do this must have their own kind of special hell waiting for them. I have such a problem believing in the goodness of this life when confronted with these sick twisted humans. My heart breaks when I hear stories about this subject.

Happens EVERYWHERE. ALL dogs are potential victims. Sold to laboratories, used as bait dogs, ... My dogs are chipped. But if they end up in the wrong hands, odds are we'd never see them again, ever. I live in a small rural town - no one is exempt. These thieves are anywhere there is an opportunity. People are sick and twisted and will do whatever they can get away with, period. I do dog rescue and I can tell you for a fact, this is real, it happens daily, and your dog needs you to be vigilant.

Unfortunately this has been going on for a long time now. I live close to Milwaukee and every week there are "lost dogs of Wisconsin " flyers on facebook where a dog has been snatched. A LOT of the time it's pitbulls or similar, they use them for BAIT for fighting. So NEVER leave your dog unattended when outside, even if they're in a fenced in area. And ALWAYS lock the doors when you leave your house, as some will be so bold as to break in to steal your dog. This is a very sad and dangerous world we live in.

Fear the dog, fear the owner more. She is armed and you will WISH it had been the dog that got ahold of you and not me. My animals are part of my family and I will defend and protect them by any means. We live in a neighborhood that has many dog lovers and many dogs. We all know and watch out for each other’s houses and pets. You are responsible for the protection and security of your pet. Ultimately meaning keeping your dog on a leash when out and not leaving unattended and having a secure yard that has been made escape proof. Many of these cases can be avoided. Just like children you should constantly stay aware and diligent. The guilt would be unbearable if this happened and you realize you let it. Blessings for the victims of these horrific deeds. Prayers for the animals and the families. Thank you for also raising the awareness and reminding people of these dangers, also showing these suspicious individuals, nicely done

What kind of people would do that? Evil people. People steal dogs of all kinds and sizes for the most malicious purposes. When they steal and sell them, it isn’t because they think they’ll find a better home. Dogs are used as sparring partners for dog fighting, sold for meat and skins, etc. They steal other animals you may have as well. In my local area here in Southern California, somebody stole somebody’s pet therapy pig. I’m pretty sure it ended up on the barbecue. I agree with you that the deterrence should to be extremely high. The punishment should be extreme because what they do is extreme. I’ve noticed in our area a lot of people are missing their dogs. There are constant posts of dogs that are missing. It’s really sad. We also have a lot of coyotes which will attack and kill and eat dogs and the cats too. So, if it’s not the human thieves it could be the wildlife thieves. Never leave your pets unattended and be prepared and know what to do if someone tries to takeoff with your pet even if you’re there.

One trick I've heard of here in Alberta is look out for fresh surveyor tape, one strip, on your fence or front yard somewhere. Also, if your fur babies are your children? Don't leave them anywhere you wouldn't leave your human child. I love small towns, I think they're some of the best places in the world. But I still watch my kids. It's tough sometimes walking the line between vigilance and paranoia. Luckily, I have good neighbors and everyone sort of looks out for one another.

The dog snatchers do it to make money by reselling the dog to people who are looking for a particular breed dog. These people should be treated like any thief and have to do jail time. If they do this kind of crime, they would do worse so I don't think they deserve sympathy. In fact, they probably DO worse crimes, but haven't been caught yet!
@greenize1959
@greenize1959 5 жыл бұрын
Ruth Christianson ...That isn’t the only reason they do it. Dog fighting rings need bait dogs to throw into the ring so their dogs learn to attack, injure and kill. That way, when it’s time for the fight, their dog is the toughest and they win a bundle. Sick, but true.

This is for those of you who have outdoor cats... If you MUST have an OUTDOOR ONLY cat or LET them out...(this is a good idea in general for all cat owners really.) NEVER teach your cat to come to "here kitty, kitty" or anything like this... no "sweetie, precious, buddy" etc. Always call your cat by the cat's name only. It may not totally remove the risk of a stranger abducting your cat but you'll stand a much,much better chance of your cat not being stolen or tempted to go to a stranger. Cats ARE harder to steal or catch, ask people who do TNR but people DO steal CATS, that's a fact. Try to teach your cat something special between you and he/she like a special clicking sound, snap of fingers, etc. Something only the two of you would know. Also a special nickname that only you two know as a backup. Only you two (and probably a family member is a good idea too.) That's in case someone has been around you checking your property out unknowingly. Waiting. (This can help also if your indoor cat gets out and someone tries to steal it while you're looking for it. I have actually had to use these very methods in a similar situation! Years ago one of my persian cats accidentally got out and I got my cat back over a month later!!!)Maybe this would be helpful for those who have "indoor only dogs" as well, who let them have what I think is referred to as "yard time?" I sincerely hope something here was maybe helpful... Much love!❤🐾

@@VeterinarySecrets and THANK YOU Dr. Andrew for bringing awareness to this. I noted SEVERAL mentions in the responses about the theft of dogs for the purpose of being used as bait dogs in dog fighting rings and I think that is possibly and PROBABLY one of the reasons, if not THE BIGGEST reason dogs are stolen. I am nauseated at the moment. All our best... -wanda,Simon and Giorgio

That is my worst nightmare to have my baby stolen, he needs his allergy shot every 5-6 weeks and if stolen he wouldn’t be getting what he needs, I trust no one these days.

We have an epidemic of dog theft and dogs being poisoned by home invaders. Maybe you could give us advice on what we can do when dogs are poisoned. I know it needs to be treated asap. Its normally rat poison that they use.

A friend of mine had her dog stolen, the people claimed they found the dog but ended up charging her almost three thousand dollars to give the dog back. They claimed the dog was theirs and were selling it because it was purebred, truth is the dog was stolen from the fenced in back yard. Legally my friend couldn't do anything and the dog was pregnant with puppies, get your dog microchipped, if the people refuse to return it you have legal grounds to have them arrested or at least prove that the dog was yours in the first place. Also make sure you have signs to warn people of the dogs on your property, that way if one of these people ends up being bitten while trying to steal the dog they cannot file for grievances.

Be aware. Most crimes as such are inside jobs. This means they are someone who knows the would-be victim, or knows of them and their situation/schedule either directly or indirectly. Be aware.

Montag Alexis .. not true. I work in animal rescue. One of the main reasons dogs and cats are stolen are for dog fighting rings. These stolen pets are used to train their fighter dogs how to attack and kill, so they’ll win a ton of money in the fight. We’ve rescued so many bait dogs that were fortunate enough to survive. They just look for the opportunity. Dogs Left in the car alone. Strays. Cats roaming. Free Craigslist ads. You name it. They’ll send their wives or girlfriends to look at a free to good home pet, so that it doesn’t seem suspicious. Don’t be naive enough to think it’s someone who knows the victim. Most times, it’s very random and opportunistic.

All this time my main concern and worry has been about wild animals getting my dogs (hawks, coyotes, ect), and now I have to worry about my own species doing this? I have two small maltese so I know I have to be their body guard 24/7!!! I never let them out of my sight and always watching for predators. It's funny they are considered "property" because I own a lot of property but none of it is as valuable to me as my dogs. If there was a house fire, they would be the only "property" I would risk my own life to save!!

That is Karin and Catherine Adams. The mother and daughter team. They have been caught with stolen and abused animals. They got a slap on the hand. If you google "Karin and Catherine Adams dog thefts" the news stories will come up and if you go to images you can find their pictures. A very brazen pair.

Apparently, thieves have been known to tie a plastic bag up in a tree branch, near a yard with a prospective dog. I guess it's a marker for later, to finish the job. Heads up people.

Dr. Jones, Could you please give me link to video about the supplement Arnica for stiff joint. I can't seem to find it with so many videos. I am thinking of taking my Lab off Glucosamine Chondroitine that she has been on for maintenance since a pup.. It doesn't seem like it helps now that she is getting a little older. She gets stiff quite often and I don't like it. But I don't remember what dosage you mentioned of the Arnica.

They are a bunch of them especially here in South Carolina for some reason you have to keep a close eye on your dog and if you have a dog house and you have a dog tied out you can forget it they're coming for it they will use the dog police against you too if they can !!! My dog stays in with me it stays in my bed at night !!!

People who would do something like this are likely dope fiends who would sell their own mother to get their drugs. I agree that there has to be a heavy penalty for it, but I am afraid a dope fiend won't be thinking about anything except how to get money for their next drug fix.
