In this video you will learn about why it is so important to teach dogs bite inhibition and also how to detect the warning signs of a dog bite or attack.
If someone says that a dog bit or attacked with no warning signs, well that simply isn’t true.
Dog bites and attacks are actually very very predictable, and very very avoidable when you know what to look for.
When something is happening to our dog or around our dog that is making them uncomfortable, they will give off warning signs.
Because we are humans who don’t naturally understand dog body language, it is very easy to miss these warning signs.
If we miss the warning signs, and continue to do what ever it is that the dog doesn’t like, and the dog bites us, then it is OUR FAULT!
It is not fair to get mad or angry at a dog for biting when they were asking us to stop and we didn’t.
Below is what I call the dog aggression ladder, and it shows you the build up of signs that a dog will give that eventually leads to a bite.
Now keep in mind that you won’t necessarily see every single warning sign or action on this ladder before a bite occurs, but you will always at minimum see at least one, and that is your cue to identify what is bothering your dog and remedy the situation.
When you see your dog displaying the behaviors on this chart, here is what they would say to you if they could speak english.
” Stop it! “
” I don’t like what your doing to me! “
” Leave me alone! “
” I’m scared! “

From what I've learnt, when the dog is licking his hand after the "bite" is dog language for showing submissiveness and saying let's be friends. All dogs do that. Also important yes the dogs is very sweet because he is well taken care of, well exercised, well trained and well socialized! The owner maketh the dog so to speak!

My beautiful and amazing mistress I have three cats and one dog. The kitten attacks the other cats and used to attack the dog. We wouldn't abandon our dog if he bit the kitten back. I think it's because dogs know how much those claws hurt and fighting back will make it worse.

My beautiful and amazing mistress I just wanted to say my dog has no knowledge that if he bites someone that he will get put down? He doesn't speak English and dogs don't have a understanding of that stuff, do how can a dog know that it will be put down if it bites someone when it can't talk? Yes they can understand simple things like sit, stay and stuff but your associating an acting with a word so it's triggering that response, in theory you'd have to show a dog another dog biting someone then getting put down for it to understand and that's just not gunna happen is it really? I understand what you meant and what your saying, but the dog had no knowledge that it will get put down if it bites someone

Or its simply because no dog wants or likes biting their master, the one (or many) that has been with them for years, showing them love and taking care of them, but it will happen if you push it like this guy did for educational purposes. The dog really surpressed its annoyance well out of love for the owner, but too much is too much sometimes. It doesnt want to, but it has to.

@Alex are dogs robots?
@gideonandrus9144
@gideonandrus9144 2 жыл бұрын
@Alex a dog should always have a say in the matter, they're entitled to a life of peace and comfort, same as you. its your responsibility as their owner to train them, give them a home, and integrate them into your family. that isnt to say that you should walk on eggshells around dogs, a properly trained dog should be tolerant of annoyances to a reasonable degree, and would give signals if they were not comfortable. odds are, if you have a dog that is agressive, doesnt like being touched (especially while eating) or never stops barking, they are most likely lacking training. and a dog trained once isnt a trained dog. dog training is a continuous process. sometimes you need to test their responses to make sure they havent forgotten their training.
@anolisa1939
@anolisa1939 2 жыл бұрын
@Alex No, they should not. Most dogs HATE baths, grooming, nail trims, shots, etc…but if they respect your authority, they should put up with any and all annoyances without showing an ounce aggression. A dog would only growl/bite at a housemate like this if it viewed the other dog/person as being of lower rank than itself. …the “trainer” in this video is simply the Rottweiler’s b*tch.
@teas3998
@teas3998 2 жыл бұрын
@@anolisa1939 Your way of "making dogs respect authority" creates fearful, unpredictable, and dangerous dogs. Dogs are sentient creatures. They have boundaries. There needs to be compromise in some areas, but the dog ALSO needs to be respected for the dog AND the people around them. They aren't programmable little robots, they are animals with feelings and instinct.
@bladenot-runner1795
@bladenot-runner1795 Жыл бұрын
@@anolisa1939 Respect goes both ways no matter who's in charge. Crossing an animal's boundaries and teaching them not to *harmlessly* express their annoyance is a great way to have an animal go from zero to sixty. No matter how much they respect you, everyone has a limit, and it's better to have them communicate that before they reach it and before annoyance turns to actual aggression. I've worked with rescue animals and seen a lot of people with your mentality get hurt.

My dog learnt on his own bite inhibition. As a puppy I played with him letting me bite, growing up he got so strong that as he once bit me I retracted suddenly my hand screaming. He stared at me in a way that I think he understood in that moment that he caused me harm. From that day on he never harmed me again, even thouh he bit me several times as a warning sign. RIP Cris.

I have a great -real example- of why bite inhibition is so important. A few years back, my german shepherd (Lizzie) got hit by a car at night. After the vet came and check on her, awake her from the shock and give her some sedatives, he asked us to take her to do some x-rays to see if they broke her spine and how were the chances of recovering. The next morning the sedatives were fading out but we had to move her to the car so we could go the vet clinic. I must have done a wrong movement or something but suddenly she snapped at me and inmediately released. I was 15 (and im a very thin girl) and she was a full grown GSD. Imagine the damage she could have caused! Instead she didnt break skin and only gave me a light bruise. She must have been in intense pain, and still manage to control her own bite force to say "HEY, Stop. Im hurting!". If she havent know how to do that, I could have gone to the hospital and get several stitches. Thats how I know, first hand, bite inhibition is crucial to all dogs.

A lot of these comments are really ignorant. Bite inhibition is very important. When my dog had a broken leg, ( An 80 pound boxer ) I had to carry him to get him to the vet. The first time I picked him up he quickly snapped at my face cause he was in pain and he his response was acknowledging me that the way I was carrying him hurt him a lot. I picked up up again in a different position and no snap, the relationship between a dog understanding the power of their jaw through play with their master is vital when it comes to situations where it matters. This guy is messing with his dog to show you all an example of this, most of you are missing the important point he's trying to make.

Wtf are you talking about? Yes it is responsive to things like pain but doesn't mean that an irritated dog or dog in pain clamps it's jaws on you! My dog will never ever under any circumstances bite anyone! And she's loved throughout the community as a perfect dog! All it takes is discipline when showing overtly aggressive tendencies! It really wasn't difficult at all! Love/affection + discipline/dominance! And they are perfect! Not if they don't like something or you touch what hurts them they go for you like you are their bitch!

I torture the shit out of my dog and he has never shown his teeth to me. We play around and he'll put his mouth on my arm, but like you said he has good bite control. I might add that he's a 78lb pit bull. We got him as a rescue. If I try to annoy him, he just takes it as love. When we first got him I tried to trigger a bite response to see if my fiancé would be safe with him around other people. Pulled his tail while he was eating, put my hand in his food bowl, put my face in his food bowl... He just wags his tail, licks my face and keeps doing whatever he was doing.

My boxer is the same way. I've annoyed the crap out of her and she just ends up wanting to play. I wrestle with her real rough, throwing her around and stuff and she gets mouthy but she never shows her teeth or growls. Same with my kids. My son will grab her ears and tug them or stuff like that, and the worst she does is kinda mouth his hand. Then again, I taught her since she was a pup that she can't bite hard. She learned pretty quick that any more than just touching her mouth on people to get their attention or when playing is too much.

I used to constantly try to bother my dog to try to get her to bare teeth or snap. Pull on her ears..tail...feet. Doesn’t matter she doesn’t care. No change in behavior other than just being happy she’s being touched. I honestly think pits aren’t as bothered by pain or discomfort as other dogs. Not all of them but her for sure.

How refreshing to find someone who CLEARLY understands what dogs are about and where we go wrong with them. I truly enjoyed your clip. Thank you on behalf of my 'puppies' too. I am not sure I understand those people who seem 'disappointed' that no 'blood shed' occurred, that no limbs were torn apart, and that no gory bite was shown, and therefore marked this video down because presumably it doesn't match 'what it says on the label'. Mmmm, animals, predators, which dogs are, are not 'actors' or 'role player' unless 'play mode' is on, and that requires the 'play mode protocol ' in action. When this dog trainer is highlighting the 'precursors' , the very loud and clear signs which most dog owners take for granted, or ignore, or dismiss, or attach little weight to them, is also talking about the 'situational awareness' mode the dog is on. At that stage, especially when dealing with powerful predators, and Rottweilers and/or powerful dogs are (300+ pounds bite force psi is RATHER impressive if one counts that the Kangal is deemed to have 734/800 depending where one reads from, but it's still IMMENSE at the lower end of the scale, and that the HYENA 'travels' at 1100 pounds psi biteforce) the question about: "why didn't he show the dog's biting him" sounds rather ODD, because the switch that 'changes' Dr Jekyll into Mr Hyde is NOT ON AN 'on'/'off' BUTTON, i.e. the threshold from 'warning snarling etc' to 'bite to attack' cannot be measured by human notion of time, therefore it would be INSANE, POINTLESS, and CRUEL to the dog to 'FORCE' that threshold FOR YOUR OWN ENTERTAINMENT and lack of vision. What this guy is saying (amongst other things) is "LEARN THE WARNING LIGHTS", (a man forewarned is one forearmed) , and work on your 'defusing and appeasing strategies' to take the situation a great deal of notches down. Don't waste your time expecting the gore and bloody, you are on the wrong channel for that sort of stuff. :-), TRAIN YOUR DOG to respond to your control of their jaws and pressure. They don't know HOW STRONG THEY ARE, they just automatically (instincts and drives) respond to whatever stimulus that alert ANY OF THEIR AUTOMATIC PILOT BUTTONS, and the trained ones too. In my opinion those who don't see the huge danger in 'activating' the 'true bite' switch, also don't understand that when the response is sent via the brain, it's ALREADY too late for the human. HENCE prevention is better than cure, and knowledge/true information is power, and life saving when it comes to understanding the body language of a powerful predator BEFORE the predator's attack protocol is engaged, so as to avoid the INEVITABLE once the non-existent (almost) threshold is crossed, and the 'animal' side is deployed. For God's sake we aren't even able to 'rehabilitate' (threshold 'correction' and impulse response readjustment) our great troops after they come back home, because they HAD to cross the 'threshold', AND WE EXPECT TO BE ABLE TO DO IT WITH A TRUE INSTINCTS AND DRIVE driven powerful predator? Are we deluded or simply ignorant about what nature is about? In this world there are POSSIBLE THINGS, impossible things, and MIRACLES, after that it's all science fiction and charlatans. PS: my experience with dogs relates to GSDs and large Mastiff-types of dogs. So far I can say that a Rottweiler does NOT LIKE TO BE 'worked up' indefinitely..i.e. s/he quickly (compared to other breeds) turns SERIOUS about the whole thing. To those who believe that 'a dog is a dog', then you must also believe that 'a car is a car'. Would you also say that maintenance-performance-troubleshooting-running costs-abilities required-to-make-the vehicle-perform-at-its-best(etc etc) WISE are the same if we were comparing a Fiat 500 to a Bugatti Veyron?

That dog is so chill 😂 the amount of effort it took to get him to give that little bite is wild. My dog would have started play-mouthing way earlier, though that may just be because I hand wrestle her a lot by messing with her. I've never actually had an actual snap from her, I can't imagine what it would take to get a real snap or proper angry/annoyed bite from her. Maybe if she was injured, but even when she got into a fight with a bobcat and I had to clean her wounds she just cried instead of biting. You are 100% right that dog bites are preventable. This is a really good video on warning signs and teaches people why you shouldn't just stop all mouthy behavior. I'm currently training two dogs who were abandoned in the desert nearby my house, caught them eating one of my laying hens, so now we are re-training not to attack chickens, and to do basic dog things! The boys didn't even know how to sit or lay down on command and I was able to accomplish that today after a collective two hours of training between yesterday and today, and bath time yesterday was a nightmare! I've never seen such dirty dogs! Can't wait to check out more of your videos, it's good to see folks who have a more moderate understanding of dog behavior and training principals, instead of training natural instincts out of a dog until they comply with all commands and act like little soldiers. It's fun to have a dog with personality!

Great idea for a video, with very poor delivery People absolutely should be able to read an animal's body language and cues, but this wasted 13 mins too long, having not appropriately shown the warning signs. There are far more warning signs he never even touched on.

I train bite inhibition from day one with my rotts. In large part because I think play is very important in developing a strong bond (and we play hard sometimes) but also for not having a tragedy later. I know for a lot of people it may seem strange but teaching a dog how to properly bite is important for proper communication. Great video...and a great dog from what I saw ;)

My GSD is almost 12yrs old and has recently started "baring his teeth & gentle biting" usually when I groom him. I noticed (just like in your video) it's usually when I touch his lower legs/paws.. He has always been a gentle dog (no aggression towards anyone, very tolerant of young pups jumping all over him & generally well socialised. I was starting to worry that something was going wrong with our relationship. I now understand (from your video) why he's doing this and how to put it right. Thank you for taking the time to make the video.

I have 53 years experience with dogs. I had a female Rottie I acquired from birth as a sick rescue pup that the breeder thought would die. I nursed her back to life and she never really grew to a full Rottweiler size due to her illness as a pup. One day she was around 11 months old, we were in a car and she growled at me while I was driving. It was the first and last time she would ever display any aggression towards me. I used physical discipline, and from that point on she knew for sure I was Alpha Master. We had a fantastic relationship, and she lived 12 years.

Max is a lovely dog. It was difficult to watch that as you annoyed him. I love how he licked you afterwards. He was clearly uncomfortable with having to have gone that far with you. I didn’t see much dog talk from him with his ears. Or his tail, has he been docked. Tails are such an important communication tool for dogs

@@varshaakumar07 unlikely but not impossible , for instance if you wake your dog from a deep sleep they may automatically nip at you, as they are scared! But after 5 years without real fault it should be fine! But if they are introduced to new things it’s possible like new children or babies around dogs can sometimes lead to different behavioural acts if the child is pestering the dog

The tail isn't the only thing dogs use when communicating. Their tails are fine. They can still communicate with others as they were able to like before. Like ear cropping, the dog didn't go deaf.

Word of wisdom.....no dog should ever snap at its owner regardless of the pain it's in. None of my dogs have ever snapped at me. They have whimpered really loud and pulled away to tell me they are in pain in that area...... my dobermans, German shepherds and yorkies.

Everyone has an opinion on dogs that bite, especially people who don't own dogs that bite. All dogs can bite, and all dogs have a bite threshold. Many may never reach that threshold, and that's great, but others have a lower threshold, which is why training inhibition is so important. It is just not realistic to say that no dog should ever snap at its owner, and a dog that does snap is not instantly a bad dog.

cellogirl11RW Generally a well socialized dog shouldn't feel the need to be aggressive towards humans, also not to mention the danger if the dog are around children and the dog snaps. Aggressive behavior shouldn't just be accepted like that..

cellogirl11RW There's a lot of things which is natural for dogs, like protecting their food, living outdoors, killing animals etc. but isn't an accepted behavior. Dogs are living in our homes not in the wild, therefore we need to adjust their and our lifestyles for a perfect match.
