We live on our property and we have lots of Coyotes that hang around. They try to ambush my dog alot. This dog in the video is not mine, but my neighbors. She always trys to chase the Coyotes away, but she also knows when to back down. My dog does not, and would just keep chaseing them and get eatten lol....yup

I remember living in northern BC and lived right on the edge of town near a field. We had a German Shepard and one day my brother, the dog and I were just horsing around in the back yard. All of a sudden the dog just started FREAKING out and wouldn't let us near the fence closest to the field. I thought it was weird until my mom called us inside very calmly, she even made sure that the dog came inside too. When we got inside she told us to look out my bedroom window. We saw 3 coyotes walking maybe 5 feet from the fence line. They stayed around for another few hours, but we didn't see them after that. Also it wasn't the first wild animal that walked through that field and it probably won't be the last lol. We once had a moose and her baby, a black bear, and once I saw a gopher scamper by.

The dog reminds me of a dog we used to have. She was stupid as a bag of rocks. She used to get over on the other side of the fence in with the neighbors cows. When you called her she come running up to the top of the fence where there was no hole and get increasingly frustrated that she couldn't get back. (There was a lot of tall grass on our side of the fence and it was a pain to go down to the hole if you were wearing shorts.) Fortunately, her sister (black, longhair from the same litter) was much smarter. If you told her to 'go get your sister' she'd go down to the hole and lead her sister through. She figured that out without any training, which means she not just had a sense of self but had an understanding of who her sister was, what her sister was having problems with, and how to show her sister how to get back through the fence, and that was what you wanted her to do.

@smellyolegoat150
@smellyolegoat150 3 жыл бұрын
That's not what's happening. A lab isn't fast enough to catch a coyote. The coyote is just messing with the dog. My 35 pound Whippets routinely caught up to coyotes and would literally run rings around them. That would pretty much make the coyote stop and face the Whippet, but only because he had no choice. Finally, the coyotes would break and run again. The same thing over and over again. Many times the Whippet and coyote would disappear from view over a hill, or into the woods. My Whippet would always return none the worse for wear. It's not because the coyote has some devious plan to lure the dog into the woods. It's not because the lab is to smart to be lured away. It's because the lab is only half heartedly interested in the coyote, and is just posturing to keep it at bay, and both animals are smart enough to know how they match up speed wise, they both worked that out in those few short sprints. Neither wants to risk a fight, though the lab would most likely win that battle.

@@smellyolegoat150 labs are extremely curious and very smart. My dog is calm and confident around most animals. He has encountered deer, foxes, turkeys, ducks, squirrels, and even saw a moose once. His reaction is consistent. He will posture for a good view then sit and watch. Other dogs, he is of course as happy as a lab with friends, However, coy dogs yapping close by and he moves away and will get right next to me. Perhaps he can detect whatever they are communicating? Again, he is a super consider dog and fearless but the coyotes seems bug him.

@l0ltxtit I live in a large city. There's a research farm 10 miles outside the city with huge, isolated ravines. I was there last year during the winter, and heard at least 15 coyotes howling at one time. I howled back, and two of them came up the ravine to check me out. I talked to them when they were about 20 feet away, and they both shyly walked away. So they definitely do live together, and judging from the ripped up deer I've found in that area, coyotes do hunt in packs.

@AudioVisionNG Coyotes are known to lone hunt, tandem and even pack hunt. They will often pack up when seeking larger prey like deer etc. Mating pairs often hunt together as well. It also depends on the region, size of coyotes and the available prey in the area. I saw 8 of them chasing a deer around once and I see them running around by themselves too. You cannot definitively say they are or are not pack animals because of the versatility coyotes possess to survive.

Coyotes hunt in packs with one acting as a decoy of which a dog - in this case the lab - gives chase. The other members of the pack will ambush the dog (lab) to slowly weaken it and then finally bring it down. It is not a good idea to let your dog to chase coyotes. A coyote pack can even bring down a large dog.

coyotes can sense when your dog is fearful so they use that. This is a lab, a sweet dog usually, had it been an anatolian shepherd, the energy is different and the coyote would think twice.

I've had coyotes around my house two nights in a row, I think they've claimed the area or something like that. But peoples cats have been going missing for the past year. I think I know why now... I'm kinda afraid for my 35pound collie. Everyone says it wont attack my dog but I know coyotes lure.

No problem. We have 3 different packs of coyotes withen a mile of the house and it gets quite noisy at night. It starts out sounding like a bus load of children in the distance and i fear they could take my daughters small dog or attack my 2-1/2 year old grand daughter. We dont dare let her out without one of us being with her or her "big brother" a 45 pound american pit bull terrier. He already chased one off the other day. Coyotes are quite brave to come around in the day time

@66SiK Not if its a mastiff, a mastiff could take on a pack of 3 - 4 easily, or even an irish wolfhound (bred to hunt and kill wolves)
@impalaSS65
@impalaSS65 2 жыл бұрын
A "mastiff" means "English Mastiff" . so I definitelly disagree. They are rarely agile enough and very rarely aggressive to match a wild animal. They have very low stamina. They often have under bite so their teeth are weaker. An irish wolfhound has just like the mastiff, only been bred to look good for the upper classes, during hundreds of years. They are so unaggressive that they are docile. Much too large to have a chance to be effective. Any one dog against three - four Coyotes will more likely succumb due to exhaustion and dwindling ability to protect the rear against decripling attacks. A very aggressive Kangal, Cane Corso, Ovcharka (not too large) might stand a chance, but it is truly idiotic, borderline "city folk", to set them up working against predators alone.

@PlainsPup
@PlainsPup 10 жыл бұрын
martini carbine Yes, it's a great idea that has been slow to take off in many places, but once it does, it's quite effective. People in Eurasia have been keeping these large livestock guardian dogs (LGD's) to guard their sheep, goats, and cattle against wolves and other predators for thousands of years. Some, like the maremma and others, are raised with their flock of sheep from puppyhood. Because the dog feels like the sheep are members of its pack, and even looks a bit like sheep, he is quick to frighten a wolf away if one wanders into the flock. Some LGD's are even capable of engaging wolves in combat. LGD's often wear spiked collars, which can protect their neck and give them an advantage in a fight against a wolf, bear, or large cat. Even if the dogs cannot defeat predators themselves, they are good at alerting people, who can then step in with weapons to frighten off, or if necessary kill intruders. What's nice about this system is that humans don't have to persecute predators as much; they can trust that the dog will usually keep their livestock safe, and not have to go out and deplete populations of important wild carnivores. Here in the western US, people have begun using these large dogs, as well as llamas and donkeys, as livestock guardians against coyotes or even larger predators. This approach has proven effective, and is becoming more widespread. :)

Coyotes have killed 3 dogs, and killed/eaten 57 cats (confirmed) in my neighborhood this summer, we're in the Chicagoland area, more and more Coyotes are being spotted in urban areas around here, the Coyotes are becoming more and more aggressive toward people's pets and people. Now I'm afraid to walk the streets, and the fact is my outdoor cat (who's been missing for a week now) may have been eaten by one of them. It's illegal to kill Coyotes in our area because they are protected, and since we cannot own guns here, there is no way to defend ourselves when the predators come into our backyards looking for an easy meal.

Jeff .Cann I appreciate the thought, but: 1) You can accidentally mace yourself depending on the wind, then you're maced while trying to fight of a bear with your bare hands. 2) Your chances of drowning in a back yard swimming pool are about 6X higher than being injured by a negligent discharge of a firearm. Yes, every death is a tragedy, but you have to put it in perspective.

Little hard to determine the coyote's intentions from the film; either it just felt playful or it was trying to get the dog worked up enough to chase the coyote into an ambush a little ways off. Folks commenting on this sort of thing tend to get into false dichotomies wherein either the coyote is a playful, loving, entirely harmless child of nature (the noble savage fallacy), or else coyotes are invariably vicious, conniving monsters dedicated to slaughtering our pets, small children and the elderly. Black or white, whereas reality often tends to be greyish. Truth is sometimes coyotes DO just feel playful, but this sort of behavior also corresponds to a well documented hunting pattern in which largish dogs are lured away from home and ambushed and killed by multiple coyotes working together. If they try this in your neighborhood a lot, as you say, I'd recommend shooting the coyote who's acting as a lure. This should discourage his pack and possibly persuade them to move on. Of course another pack will just move into the territory, so if you want to safeguard your dog you need to reconcile yourself to shooting a few coyotes each year. They're very bright, and they will certainly get the message...
