Hey everyone, I hope you’re doing well, or otherwise working towards it. Personally, I must admit that I’ve just had the most relaxing winter break by far!
Going into the break, my first term ended quite intriguingly, and-holy hell-I somehow managed to clutch up this Computer Programming course. Contrary to the devastating intricacies of the course, which I wrote about in • dear diary 2 , almost planning to retake the course for a higher grade opportunity, I ended with an...

However, here are a few sliced paragraphs from the doc, just so I can have chunks of the diary entry in this video description:

Education Studies (study of education science basically) ended with a 76% (3.0/4.0 GPA), and I was even contemplating using one of my 4 opportunities to exempt the grade from my overall cGPA, but you can only submit that request before the exam season, so knowing I’d been thinking about this after having done the exam, the deadline had obviously passed. On the other hand, my 2nd-year friend did reassure me that the grade isn’t even terrible to go along with (yet, this guy is literally maxing his cGPA stats). For reference, grades do matter for my first year, and I’ll just leave it at that. Math Proofs also came out kind of weird, and I ended up scoring lower than expected after going into the exam with an A-, so I’m retaking that to boost my grade (you’re allowed to retake just once). But this writing course grade though 😂-this is where I trolled back-came back with an A (4.0/4.0 GPA). Guess what? For 2 of my 4 monthly assignments (discourse community + genre analysis), the topic of my papers was on Minecraft - specifically, Minecraft RodPvP. The idea was so stupid due to its nature (others wrote their papers on reddit communities tbh), but my prof accepted and in fact liked it, so this actually worked out. The same 2nd-year friend of mine burst out laughing in disbelief when I showed him this 😭💀🤣. So, in terms of grades, I’ve essentially gone along with 3 great courses, 1 average course, and 1 Math Proofs course which I’m retaking this term.
I was quite satisfied going into the break because while there were folks who did both better and worse, only a small percentage truly excelled in everything - and honestly, I continue to be inspired by this friend absolutely acing everything and almost smurfing in uni. Once more, university is tough, and scoring high is generally unexpected, but it’s necessary for my first year of CS due to recent competition.
Nevertheless, I finally returned home and enjoyed a lazy winter break with my family, leaving my PC setup behind in my student residence (so there was no Minecraft at the time!). We’re a Chinese-Canadian family, and we’re honestly quite assimilated into the western culture that we still celebrate Christmas to the fullest. After studying for a while on end, returning to a home of gift-giving and socializing was astonishing, and I’m super grateful for it. Here it goes: presents under the tree (such as +1 coat for the harsh Canadian winters), binge-watching anime with friends on their comfy couches, and gymming with friends.

On the way back, yes, I was tasked with driving again 😅. This time, Google Maps led us not back via the highway, but through some mountainous and curved roads that went UP-AND-DOWN-AND-UP-AND-DOWN. It literally reminded me of the roads I took on several of my 100 km cycling trips with my relentless one cyclist friend. But unlike cycling, I was in a car, and there was an accelerator pedal. Throwback to the times when I had to full-pump it for 5-minutes just to climb to the peak of a singular hill, with 50 more hills to spare. Fortunately, this time, I’m seated back and just tapping on the accelerator with no effort, perhaps reallocating the mental effort to ensure we don’t get hit by a car or whatnot.
