The shame is how short their lives are compared to ours. I continue to get dogs after they are gone, and that will be one of my great regrets, passing away and leaving a dog/cat behind. That said, I would feel so incomplete, specially in retirement, not having dogs, it would be difficult to be alone.

I’m crying through the cancer part. My precious Heinz 57 Winston died from an agressive cancer three years ago. He went in for his check up and we scheduled one for the following year. Two months before that check up, he got up one morning and couldn’t walk on one of his legs. We took him to our vet and in that ten months he had gotten an agressive cancer that had eaten through his bone and had spread to his lungs. We had to put him down that day. I will always miss my happy and wonderful Winston. I don’t think I’ll ever get over it.

I’m so sorry for your loss of Winston. That part of the story hit me hard too. We’ve adopted retired racing greyhounds for 25 years and absolutely adore them. Right now my 94 lb lap dog Archibald is sleeping in my arms like a person. Before we adopted Archibald, we had what will forever be my animal soul mate Atticus. I’m a kidney transplant candidate and have been sick due to a genetic disease I was born with ADPKD since my early 20s. I’m 47 now and have been awaiting a donor for 2 yrs on the UNOS registry. Atticus became a medical assistance animal for me like our first hound Ava did. Both could tell when I was having heart arrhythmias that caused me to faint and would herd me to sit or lay down before I became symptomatic. They were also wonderful emotional support to me as I had to leave my job as a Neonatal ICU RN because my immune system was too weak from kidney failure to work. All our hounds have been incredibly affectionate and beloved by our family and frankly everyone they meet. They are well known in our community for riding and going almost everywhere with me and wearing their cold weather sweaters and pjs. It’s not everyday you see a pony sized dog strutting through Walgreens in a dinosaur striped full body set of PJs. We learned about the breed before adopting from the track close to our home that all Sighthounds are extremely prone to Osteosarcoma. Those long fast growing legs that make them so fast, are prone to cancer. At the height of COVID, I notices my Atticus was limping and immediately rushed him to our sighthound specialist Vet. I knew something was very wrong and was crushed to see his X-ray. I immediately saw a huge section of Osteo on his femur head and knew it was terminal. We looked into amputation but a PET SCAN showed micro metastasis already developed in his lungs. At that point there was no observed mass or indication of cancer besides the unexplained limp. But within 3 wks, a golf ball sized tumor protruded from his femur. He was only 6 years old and having to let him go before his leg snapped gave us barely 3 wks from diagnosis to Dr Borden coming to our home to help him cross the bridge surrounded by his family and not afraid. He was severe pain and if the leg broke, it would have been heart wrenching to see him suffer. He was my animal soul mate and my child to me as my health prevented my husband and I from having children or adopting. I still miss him and this part of the story had me sobbing for wonderful Atticus Fetch. The US tracks have all closed except 2 and adopting a greyhound has become extremely difficult. I used to volunteer at our track and never saw any abuse and all my hounds came to us direct from the track and all have been extremely healthy, well adjusted, friendly, easy to train and very affectionate. To adopt Archibald we had to go from Birmingham, AL to Knoxville, TN as a midpoint from him failing training class races in WV. The wait lists are 1-2 yrs long unless you have a special connection to the industry as I did from my volunteer work. I can’t imagine my life without a greyhound or similar sighthound like the Borzoi, Deerhound, Saluki or Wolfhound. I’ve been so blessed to have had Ava, Augustine, Atticus and Archibald as my furry children over the years.

Without any special effort to teach her, our Brittany knew the names of her over 100 toys and understood the difference between a verb and and a noun, and understood sentences. Without any special effort to teach, she understood gestures as signals. She knew the names of all the people and other dogs in her life. She knew when we were happy, say, upset, and offered affection when we showed these feelings. She was brave, kind, joyful, sometimes sad, and fiercely loyal. She loved unconditionally and taught us what that means. She's been gone for years and yet jut writing about her brings bittersweet tears to my eyes.

@@moutussiacharyya7510 The difference between treating your furbaby as a member of the family and just "ownership" of a dog. The Loving, walking, playing and daily interaction with family is the foundation...the teaching them skills and routines gives them purpose. Just like any human beings, dogs understand life through their family members. Out of the entire kingdom of living things, only humans and dogs truly LOVE each other and would sacrifice themselves for each other.

@@Creamstp then we should also "train" our children in various skills to impress us and our guests at parties, as we should train other family members and ourselves. Why is the training confined only to canine family members. Dogs do not enjoy doing tricks, they do it only to please us because they love the praise we give them. Of course dogs naturally begin to understand words like stop, come, go, eat, sit, drink, walk, kiss, no, yes, etc without any training whatsoever, simply by understanding the word in context after hearing it a few times, just like children don't need to be trained to understand things. I personally don't believe in training my dogs to fetch things, open doors, or do any of the things humans do as they are not geared for it. But I do allow them to fulfill the functions they find important and which gives them purpose, such as guarding the home, smelling the earth, following me around to keep an eye on my well being, chasing (hunting) birds, beasts or others they consider intruders or prey, going on walks around their territory to check its security and barking at perceived dangers, and sleeping and eating when their body demands it and being in the company of their family always and not being left alone for hours because we have work to do. The only purpose that I am unable to fulfill and which hurts my heart to this day is their purpose to mate and produce offspring but that is for their own protection, as I often selfishly console myself, because I have wilfully put them into a family of humans living in human society rather than with a tribe of dogs, so they are forced to obey human laws or perish. And neither can they be allowed to hunt for their food for the same reason. A Dog's purpose in life cannot be to jump through hoops, shake hands or high five humans, speak when asked to or to sit, beg, rollover or do party tricks as commanded. They are magnificent creatures and deserve our respect and understanding of what they are all about, they are our playmates but not our playthings.

I do dog rescue. Their sense of knowing is no less than miraculous. For the trillions of dollars spent on medical tests, we could be ALLOWING dogs to do many of those tests easier, faster, and much more accurately. "It's just a dog" could be saving billions of lives from suffering and dying. Humans have a lot to learn, starting with humility.

A friend who believes cancer tracks much like an infection suggested we ask our vet to give Prince a double dose of antibiotics. He did, and the outward sore and limp Princey had for months disappeared for a year before his cancer came back and developed too fast. Losing Prince was such a heartbreaker. Dogs provide unconditional love in a way that can not be compared to even a parents love. I come from a loving family but my dogs love me and show me love in ways I never knew or completely appreciated until recently. I have had my dogs for 14 years. I’m down to one last dog now. We also have 4 cats. All different personalities. The cats are very lovable too. They were raised from 3 weeks old with the dogs to easily coexist. It’s amazing how much love there is between all of us. It wasn’t until I realized how much I needed them after my mom died and I moved just one house away on my own but still very much alone. They were my heart of the house. And they still are. My husband whose parents hate cats never was around any cat growing up. His connection to all my animals made me see how lovable and even preferred since she is home more and he has a low calm voice whereas I’m the opposite at times. But he’s love and consideration I have seen for my animals now our animals was so loving to see grow. Even my siblings pets were watched after by my husband and my brothers female dog loves him and my brother in laws cat finds him to say hello when he goes over. They have a memory that connects him to so much love and caring. I loved seeing that about my husband. Animals are very intoned with a special someone and he is to them. My dogs and cats wait for me to come home. All hours of the night by the door waiting for my headlights to pull in the driveway. Every time I lose a pet it’s one less loved one waiting for me but so many loved ones added to my family and memories of love and kindness.

My Sascha was just like Chaser. I could point to a new toy, name it, then ask her to get that named toy from the others it was mixed up with, and she would. She was so connected to me and intuitive, such a smartie. I miss her so very much. Then Güenther came along and he learned from her and did the same. I miss him so very much too.

First learned about Chaser a few years back with Neil deGrasse Tyson. The most stunning part is when they introduced a new toy and Chaser and deducted that the new name was connected to the new toy she had never seen before. LOL, Neill had introduced a doll of Darwin (if I remember correctly, or Einstein) and mixed it with her toys, and asked her to find "Darwin" a name she had never heard before. After coming back to him twice empty, she had a look like she was thinking, then on the third brought Darwin back as if to ask, "Is this Darwin?"

Our golden retriever knows more than you can imagine. If I say “ are you want dinner” he goes to the cupboard where we keep his food. If I say “ do you want ice cream?” He goes to the bottom dreamer freezer in our refrigerator.” He also names of toys of his toys. Just a few of his words. 🐾🥰

I had a mini aussie named Sadie who meant the world to me. One day I noticed a limp and took her immediately to a vet. The x-ray was heartbreaking. She had osteosarcoma and given only weeks to live. I was devastated. I called UC Davis and was told that if I had her leg amputated I "might" be able to keep her alive for up to a year. I did it knowing that as soon as she displayed pain I would have her put to sleep. I researched cancer and used that research to change her diet. I had a ferret names kili who also had a fatal disease that I got to keep for two years past the life expectancy of its disease by changing his diet. I got to keep my precious Sadie for four years before the cancer came back and I had to have her put to sleep. I will always be thankful that I got to have those years with her.

I lost my dog Mimi last year 😭😭 and very fortunate to still have her brother Charlie here with me today as he just passed 10yrs old mark. Only sad thing I hate about this is that he’s doesn’t get to live as long as us human. I could pray for many more years. And grateful for everyday I get to wake up to him.

My Rosie is a Labrador retriever and she understnds everything I tell her and she feels me whenever my moods change in any direction. When we walk together and she wants to show me love she either looks at me or touched my leg with her nose. I really believe that if you pay close attention to your beloved dog you can really see it all: their character and their emotions. Rosie hears and feels when I start waking up in the morning before I even moved in bed. The extent of her senses is unreal... I know that this breed is very smart and loving but I never realized how amazingly smart they are. She can try to manipulate certain situations but I can read that and act accordingly. I totaly believe that dogs improve our quality of life.

Wish my neurologist watched this , didn't believe me when I started taking mestinon that dog wanted it taken more often and only calmed down when used time released form. When I have weakness I follow if dog says go to bed or take more med. He also tells me soon as something hits boil, makes me eat more than just a bit, also makes me walk when I have more strength. He protected me from aggressive human acting like he was going to break leash, protected my legs from a pitbull attack but not fighting as he was intent on getting me back in house. He is very special but came with no known history as adult from shelter.

I don't know, I've got a Jack Russel/Whippet mix who memorizes all kinds of things. Just by way of fun, we do a lot of agility training, and hiding games, so he knows the command "find it!" Sometimes, when friends have a dog who's run off, I tell him "find it! Blue!" or whatever the dog's name is, and he'll make a little search grid until he finds their scent, and then takes off running. He's found dogs in very thick woods, and even a neighbor's indoor cat who got out and was lost. He brings them back any way he can get them to come back, like some dogs he's run triumphantly out of the woods with by pushing them along. The cat hated him, so he just irritated it until it chased him, and he ran toward the owner with the cat behind him. I'm not a huge dog trainer, so I think they know quite a bit, just most people don't think about it.

@cherylmillard2067 I've had several malinois with my first one back in '95. They are very smart and loyal but lack one thing, and that is they're not very intimidating looking...is why I went back to my #1 breed, APBT American Pit Bull Terrier...they are almost as smart as a border collie. I train mine for PP and no one bothers you when you have a pit 😮😊😅

We have 5 dogs. Each of them have drastically different personalities and skills. One can detect an oncoming seizure. She is not trained, and reacts to a seizure as if it’s an enemy,( not always a good thing, but she’s very small, thank goodness), our biggest, a 70 lb black dog with huge teeth, is the gentlest and most independent. Our lab mix is so calm and quiet I go looking for her several times a day, she’s getting old, a bit senile, and will fall asleep sunning. This summer has been too hot for that, and I can’t let her sleep in the sun. Anyway, they are all smart, and very different from each other.

Just about every other house on my tree lined street with fenced in front yards has a dog. As I approach their yard, they commence with their defensive barking. All I need do is bend down and in my gentle voice say, "Hey puppy" and the tail starts wagging and they lean in to be petted. Dogs can just know that I'm a good guy. It's a great feeling!
