99% of people would have sent those first dogs back to the shelter. I give a lot of respect to that couple. They made a commitment and stand by it. That's exactly what this world needs more of. They got way more than they could handle, yet keep going. No quit in them. Massive respect.

But it is crazy for two pensioners and maybe first time dog owners to be so (over)confident to think they could handle 2 giant dogs😢 I sometimes had difficulties to hold back my 25 pound dog when he got spooked although I was much younger and fit Why not adopt a small dog a poodle or a spaniel?

@squaretriangle9208 I'm not a fan of those small rat dogs. I've always had large breeds. But, I grew up on a farm and my first pet was a 400 pound pig. Used to thrive her around like a horse. That was when I was around 6. She sure was tasty when I was 7 though. That may sound odd, but we grew all our own food. With the exception of things like salt and sugar and spices.

@@squaretriangle9208 You said it! Sometimes certain choices are completely irresponsible, it's not about a personal ego contest but what's the best dog for your environment. I don't have my 'ideal' dog either (I like large breeds too), I have a smaller, and sillier, little sneef snorf and she's the bestest little gal our entire household and neighborhood loves, she's also loved by the vet and can't wait to see them again. The Newfies are still puppies or at least teens. Large dogs and especially of heavy mastin types dont mature socially until about 3 yo. With no training they are opportunists like any dog, but way more to handle when they get that large.

With the second dog that goes in the water and won't come out, they're terrified he's going to freaking DROWN........WHY DO THEY LET HIM OFF THE LEASH???? I'm so f*cking confused on why this is even an issue... the dog endangers himself AND them, and yet there they are letting him go free around the water - come ON people where is the ever-loving common sense. Amazing. The long line leash was the second completely obvious answer besides just keep him leashed at all times until training is put in place. WHY does someone (in this case, TWO people) need to be told this?!😂😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨

Very unusual to have a Newfoundland act like that. Also the "jackapoo" is a border collie cross and needs to channel her activity level and herding instinct into some sort of activity like agility.

have you tried LAT or BAT? Ie - engage and disenage games, so you train the dog that a certain word means a treat is coming, ie yes, and then when you are far enough from a dog that they've seen it but aren't fixated, you say 'yes' and then reward, and when they look back, repeat. eventually they'll start seeing the dog and then looking at you expecting the reward - once that happens, you move closer and repeat. you're essentially rewiring their initial response to seeing a dog. it helps if you are far enough away that you can have them on a longer line, as when they feel a tight leash, this makes the reaction worse.
@blakefrancisboggs7526

What the person above said, especially the first paragraph. I've been doing that for about 6 months and my dogs made improvements. This method was on the advice of a dog trainer. However, I think the dog trainer was wrong in telling me that correcting the dog would not be effective. Recently I've started making corrections AS SOON as my dog starts to stiffen, stare, or lean towards. If I do it in the beginning of his reactive response he seems able to receive the message. When he looks away or towards me he gets a treat and praise. I also think it's important to use a strong, clear NOPE or UP-UP. Those are strong, short sounds that get his attention. Sometimes I'll snap my fingers to get him out of his fixation. It's also important to maintain some distance so you aren't setting him up for failure. Don't overwhelm him with dogs. Be consistent. I'm also think that while my dogs generally good and obedient on walks except for when he sees a dog, I'm going to keep a shorter lead so i can maintain control and be able to able to snap the lead or move into his space with a strong no if I need to. One way I also went wrong in the beginning was treating him when he was stiff or staring in an attempt to create a positive association with other dogs. I think that set me back because i thought of the problem purely in terms of creating a positive association and not communicating what i DO and DONT want (because that what the trainer told me). Tbh the dog trainer I saw was somewhat helpful but also misleading, omitting important details, or just plain wrong. I've made modifications to his technique.
