For thousands of years, people have depended on dogs to help in guarding and protection.
Some of the tasks that have been entrusted to our canine friends throughout history are: to monitor our homes, temples, farms and property, as well as the protection of their owners from other animals or from strangers and aggressors.
Many people when adopting a pet seek concrete and specific qualities such as being a good watchdog.
If you are looking for a dog for your home that besides being a pet can also be the guardian of the house, you must get to know the different breeds and their characteristics in order to choose the ideal dog.

We had a Border Collie named Lovey that was a rescued dog. He was found by my aunt in a trash can in a black trash bag in mid December almost -0°. My uncle was in the army & trained dogs. A few times he saved my brother from attackers for some reason he would walk with my brother to & from school. Fought off a doberman pinscher protecting my grandma. Lovey passed away from cancer, he was a faithful & loyal dog & we were with him, treated him like a king that he was..

So very sorry for your loss of a good Dog. I wish Rover was able to grab that low life by the throat and bit down before he was shot. The 1989 movie Turner and Hooch, Hooch was of the Mastiff Family, French Mastiff. There is a scene where Hooch puts his mouth over the bad guys throat. I remember the actor that played the bad guy remarked about how unnerving it was when the Dog did that, as all the Dog had to do was bite down and it would be over for him. I've only been around a few Mastiffs and I would agree that they can be great family and protection Dogs. But I believe they require a strong leader in a person and some training. The Mastiffs also have an interesting history. The Roman Centurions would have them in their homes to protect the family, especially when the went off on Military campaigns. The Mastiffs were also used by the Roman Army to sometimes charge the enemy lines to brake them up.

Oh $hit..... sorry for rover. I have a fearless Rhodesian Ridgeback. Some Crims came around one night to steal my Audi - but he fought them off like a legend ..... until I walked out with solution 243. Had the bar$tards in my my crosshairs as they sped away.... but not worth all the legal crap associated with eliminating them. God bless to Rover.

My Father and I had a Border Collie that came from a shelter. Dad picked him out because while the other dogs were barking, snarling, and otherwise acting out, he came to the bars and gently licked my Father's hand. It was a match made in heaven. He was easy to house train, noisey with those he didn't know, gentle with those he knew,stayed at home without a fence, and was extremely easy to train. A gentle scolding, one time, was all it took to correct misbehavior, which was rare. And loyalty beyond words. Broke our hearts when he had to be put down due to inability to walk from arthritis.

My husband and I were blessed to have three Rottweilers as part of family. They are like potato chips, once you have one you’ve got to have another! I love the breed and their protective nature. I could tell you many stories about how protective the Rottweiler is. Sammie held a stranger in place until I told him it was okay and said the word friend. I’d love to get another Rottie but my husband thinks we’re getting to old. I’m 67 and he’s 63. My heart aches for a Rottie to be part of our family!

I got a Doberman 9 years ago. They are good “Guard Dogs” but they are so much more. He’s very attentive towards me. If I’m physically hurting more than usual or my depression is getting the best of me, he’s there. He will come and either set his head gently on my lap, or come lay down right beside me. He does have a lazy side for sure. He can hear a mouse fart a mile away. And for the first couple years he would train every week and was very receptive as well as still remembers all his commands. As long as I’m in a position to own a dog, I will always have a Doberman.

My Dobermann was protective of the family at 8 weeks. He’s 7 months now and can hear a rabbit on the lawn from inside the house. The most alert dog I’ve ever owned. Never saw a puppy at 7 weeks incredibly alert and watching everything. And he lets no stranger approach us without keeping them at bay by barking and growling. He growls the most at shady characters like a handful of our neighbors who we know are shady. He can read their energy. He’s very sweet but certainly means business when it comes to protecting us. Love my puppy.

Can they be protective of other animal species? I have heard of Dobermann protecting chickens because people would snatch their free range chooks. I have parrots, I guess it would require specialist training.
@donnakeeley7924
@donnakeeley7924 4 жыл бұрын
@@EvolvedParasite My Dobie protected the cats, chickens, horses, milk cow and calves. I think it probably would follow your bird if it could outside of the house should it get out. You just have to let him know that it is your bird and he would protect it because what is yours, is his and what is his, is his too! Don't take his toys or his blanket, day bed or your bed away from him as he owns everything... including your children, which he loves and protects. He will need a friend when you are gone, if you work. A cat isn't sufficient most of the time but he's going to need another doberman or a german shepard dog of the opposite sex. Its best to get a male doberman first, so that a female will beguile him into being the boss dog when actually she is. To get a female first is going to intimidate him and you may end up with a timid male dog. This is just my experience with Dobermans. Either male or female, they make terrific pets. If they aren't alone for long periods of time, they aren't destructive. But you will need a kennel if they are. They don't like being alone and get into mischief, alone because they are lonely.

While there are certainly some genetic traits that are somewhat consistent within breeds... which is partly why there are breeds I suppose, the variation within breeds can be interesting. I’ve owned two pitbulls and they were very different dogs. Both were good family dogs and good with people, but one was the worst guard dog.

My beautiful Ridgeback girl is the love of our family. She’s grown up with our daughter and has protected her and us. I had a Rottweiler and she was the best dog I've known, although many people were intimidated by her looks she was actually very friendly, always excited to play with dogs(except a few), and she was protective of us, once when I was little I was riding my bike in front of our house, then these two small dogs out of no where came running and barking at me (I was small so yeah little dogs coming at me aggressively scared me) no one was around but we had our garage open and my dog was just chilling somewhere in there I'm guessing, she came out running and barking at the other two dogs and even bit one right on its neck, she stood in front of me standing her ground and the two small dogs backed off. She was a great dog and pretty groofy at times, sadly she just recently passed away after we found out she had lung cancer, in a matter of 3 days after finding out she passed away, I miss her a lot since she had been with us for 13 years but I'm also glad that I don't have to watch her suffer no more as she was just done, not eating anything (not even stake or treats or sausages as the doctor suggested to try and make the most out of her final days), she had no energy and would just lay there and could barley even walk. I spent all the time I had left with her not leaving her side, sleeping downstairs with her and missing school to. The day we were going to put her down, we had family members and friends who came over wanting to say goodbye, I guess she knew as once everybody was here and we were about to take her, she let go, sadly it wasn't a peaceful death and she suffercated from her blood and we had to watch her die for 3 min before she done. She was a great dog well trained by my dad that even though she was hurt, she still listened immediately when I had her sit, lay, and not touch the treat even when I left. That was a week before we found out, before she was completely drained of energy. And even though as I grew up, I hung around her the most than any of my family, she still favored my dad the most even though he would barely hang with her anymore, I'm not surprised though and I would want it that way, even though she was drained of energy during her final days, only my dad was able to get her to still wag her bunny tail just a little bit. My dad said that right before she died, he watched her get up and go by the door then she looked back at him and wagged her tail one last time before she layed down and let go. We wish to belive that she wanted to die in the comfort of her home, and after having all her family and more come to say goodbye, she felt enough love for her to finnaly say goodbye. We will always miss her, if you want to she what she looks like, I got pictures of her on my Instagram moocus14

I've got a Bichon Frise/Havanese Mix and a Chihuahua/Rat Terrier Mix. I've never had a more unnaturally VICIOUS, dedicated & determined pair of small dogs to my personal safety. I've never seen/heard a dog acting like these two do to try and protect me; even when I worked for 3 years at a Vet Clinic and my several years of volunteering for Dog & Cat rescues. Here is my best example of their bravery & determination to protect me and our home when they were about 1.5 years old (I got them both in a month's span of each other for training purposes; at 3 months old (Bichon) & 6 months old (Chihuahua Rescue)). My husband came home REALLY LATE from work (9pm is pitch black around here and he is normally home by 5pm during daylight hours) to a dark home (lights were off) with me very ill & sleeping in bed with the dogs. They heard my 6'4" husband get into the home and they leapt off our 3 foot high king-sized bed and ATTACKED him! The Bichon Mix IMMEDIATELY BIT his STEEL-TOED BOOTS, leaving TEETH MARKS in the leather; and when he didn't hear my husband yelp, he whirled around and charged his 30 lbs body straight into his legs to try and knock him to the ground. Meanwhile, the 14 lbs Chihuahua is barking & trying to distract my husband's attention from the Bichon who is biting his boots. When the Bichon whirls around 3 feet of distance to try and do a knockdown, the Chihuahua actually bites into the cloth section of my husband's pant leg and tries to pull/tug my husband's foot out from underneath him as the other dog is slamming his 30 pound body into the other leg simultaneously! It was ONLY when my husband shouted in suprise & shock at almost being knocked down in the pitch black house that our two dogs IMMEDIATELY STOPPED their "defense of the home" and started apologetically licking my husband and chirping submissive little sounds to him. I was very weak & ill in bed that day and I honestly think that the abnormally dark house, the late time coming home, mixed with the fact that he was not loudly talking on the phone, like normal, when entering the home is what convinced the dogs that he was more likely a threat instead of a friend. I've grown up and lived with dogs ALL MY LIFE and I have never seen a more successful pair of SMALL ATTACK DOGS than the two I currently own. It's really interesting how well these two little dogs from VERY DIFFERENT dog breed backgrounds could learn to work so fluidly with each other to try and takedown a 6'4" tall, more than 250 lbs, 30 year old adult, MALE intruder. I'm not an "average knowledge about animals" kind of person when it comes to my dog knowledge either. I was so dedicated to animal healthcare that I even did my first year of University as a Pre-Vet student before I switched from a Biology Major (I was two courses shy of a double Major, and graduated with a Concentration in Bio) to Psychology so I could work & help care for mentally disabled or vulnerable people as a career.

She grew into 115 pounds of love and dedication, and taught me that to a dog, standing stock still and staring was just as effective as going into a full out attack. I saw coyotes, pitbulls and a wolfhound melt away under her gaze. I'll never get another dog, because I had the best.

I had a female German Shepherd that was loving, loyal, and calm. She lay on the floor but sprung to life when someone knocked on the door and refused to move as she stood between me and whoever was at the door. As soon as she realized the visitor was okay, she went back to her spot and lay down. I'll never forget the time I walked down the lane to get the paper and I suffered a diabetic blackout. I stumbled along and was a hundred yards from my driveway and was trying to get into a stranger's car. I felt something pulling on my leg and looked down to see Sadie, my German Shepherd. Not knowing where I was I followed her and she led me home. She stayed by my side, even when the paramedics arrived. She somehow knew they were there to help me and kept an eye on them, but allowed them to assist me. I loved that dog.

Lol. Yes they can be big babies. I’ve had many over the years (I will always own one and would move if my area ever banned them) and have always told people you don’t need a mean one. Someone comes to your door and sees/hears a Rottie on the other side of it, they are going next door. They absolutely love kids too. I would not suggest anybody mess with any children left with my big girl. She is is having none of it! A definite trait from their shepherding lineage. 🙂 Also, imho, the above, “Cujo or a baby” comment is wrong. In my experience with the breed the only “mean” Rottie is one that has ruined by a bad owner. It is possible to find one not “wired” properly once in a while, but you can say the same of any breed. When I lived off campus in an apartment near the University of South Carolina, I had a black cat I called Nightshade. She was the runt of the litter. She earned her name being expanded to Deadly Nightshade by driving off three large stray dogs set on making my grilled steak their dinner. That very same year, Miss Deadly Nightshade aided in the aprehensión and arrest of a serial burgeler who made the mistake of trying to break into my apartment! When I came home after my late-night air shift on WUSC-FM, I found my cat highly agitated with blood on her claws and teeth. When I saw that my apartment was broken into, I called the police and told them what I came home to. Thanks to Miss Deadly Nightshade the police were able to arrest the serial burgeler at the Lexington County Hospital ER where he was being treated for multiple cat scratches and cat bites. My black cat essentially caught this big hulking serial burgeler and made him emotionally traumatized!

I honked the horn and it moved it was a big gray wolf not far away. I didnt want to leave so i got out...found a huge branch bigger and longer then a baseball bat...called the dog and we approached and got to within 10-15 feet at which point i stopped and with the dog attempted to casually walk back away from us 3. i said his name and pointed at the ground beside me. Thats where he sat. After a brief stare down the wolf walked back into the bush and when i went about my business he came back out....but once the chainsaw started he was gone....ive never seen a dog pee so much in the next half hour....that was a very scared but loyal dog and im glad grateful the wolf walked away. My Great Pyrenees is an awesome guardian of me and the house, he doesn't miss a thing and is absolutely fearless... Errr... except for the vacuum, garden hose (there was a diarrhea incident and an unplanned bath involving a hose, I got bit twice, he drew blood, it hurt) and the wind, the wind really freaks him out. Walking him is sort of a pain, he looks at everything and everyone we pass. That in addition to the attention he gets, people literally ask about him and compliment him on 8 out of 10 walks, the night time walks are a breeze, no one out. When other dogs come barking at him, he lunges right for them. His size alone is a deterrent, and he's got 2.5 years left of filling out. He really is a gentle giant though, and despite the fact that he's still a little devil, he's one of the sweetest dogs. He's kind to people who are sick, I brought him to visit my mom in the nursing home and he was a hit and so very gentle. Loves kids too (the young ones drop food and he cleans it up for them) And very smart. One thing that was a nightmare, he's a dominant breed, a very old breed (bronze age) and therefore has deeply ingrained instincts and mind of his own. Training him was very difficult; the Goldens before him were a walk in the park. Great Pyrenees, or Pyrenean Mountain dog (I like that one better) should have been on your list.

That mop can jump a 6 ft fence. I had one growing up. He lived 15 years. That mop of fur protects them from the teeth of wolves. He once got into a fight with a German Shepherd. He only had one tooth mark. The German Shepherd would probably have been killed if we didn't call him off. We ended up rushing the neighbor's German shepherd to a local pet hospital. They couldn't believe the amount of damage our puli had done to him and that he was still alive.
