Great podcast! I wish that all dog owners could realize that EVERY interaction they have with their dog is teaching them something. When owners bellow "COME!" as their dog is chasing a cat with no intention of returning, it teaches the dog two things - dog can do whatever he wants, and what the human says means absolutely nothing. I saw it very often in Obedience classes & competition ring: Dogs would heel nicely and sit and stay and come, sometimes winning the classes with high scores. But as soon as the Judge said, "Exercise finished" and the handler put the leash on, the dogs would bolt out of the ring, dragging their owners, jumping on strangers and acting like lunatics. I always wondered how they could fail to generalize their training to the really important 99% of their lives!

Ahhhh I learned not to have treats in the pockets. I have an Aussie that destroyed the pocket of a hoodie that had previously held treats. Treat jars and treat bait bag get my thumbs up.

I wish I could leave little bowls of food / treats out! We have cats. That will not work lol. Also our dog, a lab/ pittie mix, hates going out for her final night potty. She’s usually very tired by then - and warm - and it’s been cold outside here in Alaska. It used to take quite a bit of coaxing lol. She also loves to sleep in after eating her breakfast. What are some good ‘jobs’ I can give her? I hope to work on her putting her toys away. Our poodle loved putting his bone back in his crate when we came home. He’d do it without being asked.

This is a wonderful explanation of what my breeder’s trainer’s philosophy is: “I never miss a training moment. They happen all day long.” I never quite knew what she meant...until now! I’ve been working on moving from the basic HSTD games into transferring the behaviors they teach into our daily lives. This video has helped a great deal toward reinforcing my training plans. hmmmm...I love that dog bed set up. We do basic obedience sit stand down for a couple minutes every morning, plus a walk for exercise. Repeat in the afternoon or evening, with optional rally o practice or fetch/catch. We also have special interactions for tv night and greeting guests, etc. Simple things like wait at the door going out, pause until released on the first and last steps, indoors and out so stairs are safely navigated.

I've signed up for home school your dog and am excited to build a much closer relationship with my dog .. one thing you said in this video was about rewarding .. so if my dog barks in the yard and I don't want him to and i call him to me .. and he stops barking and comes to me .. i have usually rewarded him for coming .. you talk about the thing before the thing .. I'm confused .. should I reward him for coming even though he was doing something I didn't want before he came 😊

I would love an episode on fence aggression. My 5.5 mo American Hairless Terrier has found her outside voice and recently started going spider monkey when she hears our neighbor, who has an old lab she aggresses at, open his door. And when two dogs from another neighbor come out, dog noses go through fences holes and they exchange dirty words. This happens even in the middle of a play date with her best buddy dog. I listened to the episode of how you had people throw cookies into an X-pen of rowdy dogs at a competition. And they all calmed down after three days except the little one. The oldest ones just sniffed for cookies. My plan is to train my pup to hear the neighbor’s door or the other two dogs come out and think, wow, Mom’s more exciting. I need help planning all the slices of behavior in between “I must go spider monkey” and I need to go run and find Mom.” Thank you so much for any guidance! P.S. She does well with perch and pivot to my left and right, It’s Yer Choice, Hand Target, about 60% of the time will loose leash walk, etc.

My mini Aussie is all of a sudden afraid of going outside at my office. She has always hated riding in the car, but this fear has turned into a strong phobia. She is 11 months old. I hope to have an office mate but not sure how to help her adapt. Also can’t imagine why she is now so suddenly so very fearful. She was spaded about 2 months ago and I thought this would help but she’s actually worse now.

Love it! I say "I teach people how to live & train their dogs", since training opportunities arise all through the day, as you describe so well here. Since training can be facilitated organically, it takes the pressure off some clients who think they must do an hour of "specific training", it kind of sets them up to fail. Thank you for articulating this so nicely. "Power" in silence, I suggest too, which includes leaving the room. Eg. When 2 people have an debate/argument & 1 person leaves the room; who has the power of the moment? So enjoy your podcast Susan. Thank you!

Yes, I always have dog go to their house automaticly before we eat. It is just the way it's always been so my new dogs just slowly catch on. I give treats some times. I have 4 dogs I'm the house. 2 are mine, 2 are my Hubby's and we just have our own rooms now. I have open crates in my room and sometimes they would rather sleep in them then with me and so nights I pull the door down to secure them because I need my own space. One is a service dog so we spend lots of time together but I train with my dogs all of them and they listen to me better than Hubby but I would say that is just because we have different priorities when it comes to how we treat the dogs.

Haha, I so relate to the dogs barking at you when they're fed. We have a 1 year old springer. This was the thing that caused me the most stress when she was a baby pup. We taught her (through your hot zone game!) to run to the end of the room into her bed and lay down. Otherwise, I'd leave the room. She got the bed part pretty quickly. The no barking thing I think finally just left when she really got the routine and what we were looking for? Glad to hear she wasn't the only one who would like to demand bark for me to be more efficient, haha!

@@lisasignorelli3965 ugh, I so relate! We're in a condo so any noise and I get very stressed haha. Just keep plugging away and be consistent in your rules/games! I swear, one day I was crying she want getting any better, and then a week later I was talking to my partner and said "you know what...it's been way better!" Then another few weeks and "wow, I can't remember the last time she barked during this!?" We're finding similar success to her barking at people in our building / around the condo. Suddenly it hits you that things are better!

Another great podcast. Thanks Susan. I have a question in relation to Its Your Choice. I have a Labrador (obviously loves her food) and she is very good with the IYC game, in a training scenario. I can drop food in front of her and she will not take it without permission. However, this has not transferred to a life situation; eg; if we are out on a walk, either on or off lead and she finds food on the ground, she will dive in there and gobble it up before I can blink. How do I grow the game beyond the training environment?

Thank you so much for sharing all of theses tips. Discovering you, your HSTD program and your podcast changed the way I interact with my dog and other dogs. The content you share also have an impact on me, myself, the way I interact with people and embrace life. Im also now a member of Recallers and I love it ! Here some ideas of topics I would love to here you talk about : How to condition a dog to love having his nails cut. (It's a big deal with my dog, she is very sensitive and delicate, easily scared when it comes to manipulations (rescue husky x greyhound mix). Also, how would you train a dog to become a good trail dog (mountain bike trail dog).
