I needed this podcast. My rescue GSP Zulli came into my life at a time when my life changed, and she became my soulmate. Last November she was run over and killed instantly, I saw it and I was riddled, am still riddled with guilt. We had been together for 5 years and I’m a fit 77 years young, living alone but with family close and many friends. Circumstances brought a Toller puppy into my life a month later. Zac is now 9/12 old and has been with me since he was 8/52. Puppyhood was hard, I had trouble feeling any real love, although he tried so hard. Now things are better, he is smart, very smart but I still can’t quite bond, not in the way I bonded with Zulli. We do Agility, are in most of your programmes, I instruct Foundation at my local dog club but I find it hard to make time for him. I use any excuse not to train, “I have to Practice my Sax or Piano”, music has become a large part of my life in the last three years. He’s just reached that naughty “teen” stage and I keep trying not to compare with my Zulli. I’ll give it a lot thought, I definitely don’t want to change my Zac for another dog, the problem is not with him, but my reaction to the loss of Zulli, at least that’s what I think. Anyway thank you, I have a lot to think about.

This was inspiring to watch, thank you. 😊 The section about connection made me emotional because I met my puppy for the first time at the weekend and he looked me straight in the eye, decided I'm his and kissed my face. I don't mind admitting I cried. I love this little guy so much already, and I know we'll have our challanges but the feeling I felt on Sunday will be the center of everything I do with and for him. 😊 ❤️

Ive just listened to your podcast and taken comfort from it as I have been struggling lately. I am in the UK and have a pack of 11 dogs, 7 of them rescues so yes it can be challenging some days and I do get disheartened at times when I put my heart and soul into training etc., and the behaviours sometimes do not improve and I then reassess or walk away until I come back refreshed and with a renewed mindset. Thank you, Gail

This, Susan, has really resonated with me. I’m guilty of passing some negativity to my puppy when I get frustrated with her during training. I feel embarrassed by it, to be honest. I need to change this and have started. I will continue with it now. I’d love something on positive affirmations. Thank you for everything you do.

Yes, please. Affirmations would be great as I don't really have anyone that is in contact enough with my dog and me cheering us on. They do note positive changes in her, but that's usually a month or more apart.

Eps gets called my chicken dog all the time. It is a huge compliment. She succeeded in being able to be kind and safe around chickens (who are often bigger and bolder than she was to start with). We have giant, flightless birds called cassowaries in my neighbourhood. Being alble to be calm around these amazing, endangered animals is a skill Epsilon needs as a short walk to the beach can involve the joy of seeing a cassowary on the way (there was one in my driveway this morning). I love your clips and advice. I work on being a more self aware and kind everyday (still a lot of work on cue giver needed). But She is my precious chicken dog (said with intentional praise and love).

Thank you all you share Susan. We are grateful. Especially appreciated collar grab as Eps loves this and wags her stumpy tail furiously and loves to zoom around after. Such an awesome thing for you to share. We both appreciate your skills and guidance.

I just read up on these birds. Holy buckets. Those are some big birds! They have quite the reputation. Good on you for keeping your dog safer by teaching it to be calm around these birds, and at the same time protecting the species by having your dog be calm. Win win!

Ok listen. I've spent how many years and thousands of dollars on therapy to finally bring it all down to one thing-- BE NICE. Be nice to others, of course! Be kind to your dogs. But most of all be nice to yourself. It really is that simple. My standard poodle's name is Garrett, but he also answers to Weasel-- because he's clever, flexible, adaptable, and absolutely hilarious. ❤

I love your videos, thank you so much ! You are so right about everything but also about the names we call out dogs. My dog is called Felipa and we used to call her Felisaurus. Now we call her Felipa Truffle and she seems calmer. Also I loved what you said on another video about going out without expectations and be surprised by their behavior. Once again thank you

Woohoo Way to go This! And Susan ❤ Fun fun fun on the course 😊 So true about mindset. I had a shift in mine and my dog is responding so well… funny how he’s not as enthusiastic or responsive to others who still pointing out all of what he isn’t doing or “should” be doing at a certain age. I love how committing myself to not becoming discouraged or get derailed from my training by remaining positive, focused and kind is proving the naysayer wrong. My heart bursts with joy as I see evidence that even though challenges might take longer to overcome, it’s worth not giving up on yourself and your dog! Thank You Susan for all your help 😊❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I love love LOVED this very much and it’s so so true about how we talk and emotionally communicate with our dogs and I loved it all but I will say one thing when you said the last thing about it wasn’t working with your dog and you had somebody else finish her up and you went in the house I think your dog picked up on that and she said mom‘s not here and she went in the house, and I think she had feelings about that. I think you should’ve went outside, taking a couple of deep breath’s laughed, because laughing always gives good energy came back and and said let’s go for a swim , I think you said she loves swimming. But that’s just me.

Thank you so much for this video. I found you right at the right time ❤. My pupp pupp is Perfect im my eyes, I feel like he’s more an introvert, he’s just a little bit nervous outside. He’s just born this way. And I love him so much. We’re working on it and it got a lot better. We’re taking it slow. But this week was a bit tough. It felt like a step back. And I know it happens and he’s still growing of course and I know it’s just the process I guess. Your Affirmations would be so helpful to get better for him and stay positive and get some strength to keep on going to make him feel better. Have a great day you all.

I use positive affirmations in my day-to-day life to manifest positive changes. I had never even considered using them in dog training and would absolutely love if you could put together a dog training affirmation podcast. Just to give us some ideas of where to start in our creation of them with our pups!

You're speaking to me. My newly adopted dog has a strong prey instinct and has killed 2 baby birds and a baby rabbit, even on leash, by my side. Once at a park and twice in my yard. I've had dogs that killed animals before, but she is so driven and quick. What can i do except accept the fact that she will eventually kill every living thing in my yard?
